Summary: If there was a passage to Middle Earth from our world, what would you expect to find? or: Tolkien invented Middle Earth - didn't he?
Notes: My OFC(s) are mine; the Elves that Tolkien invented (he did, didn't he?) are not mine (what a pity!). A special "thank you" to the Kronos Quartet / Clint Mansell / Fatboy Robert s for the "Requiem Overture", giving me (and brought me through) several dar k nights when writing this. Thanks to Xavier Naidoo and Rufus Wainwright for their music that inspired me. Thanks to the Goddess for letting me find peace and inspiration. And thanks to my ever-curious and inspiring beta readers, pushing me forward on each chapter.
Dedication: This one is for the two only real Elves on earth; To the Silver One: You will always have a special place in my heart and memories; to the Golden One: You are a legend, a saint and the only true heir of Gil-Galad I know. Let's burn them down! :-)
* SPECIAL WARNING: There are real people avatars innocently depicted in this fic. They belong solely to themselves, no harm became of them and no offence is intended. It is just my way to pay the tribute to these real people, for without them, we would not have words and images of the wonderful Elves in our heads. This is posted with the List Mum's approval.
Chapter 17 - The Fellowship of the Ring
The evening came, and with it, the command for all that lived in Caras Galadhon to remain in the talans, as the Fellowship was about to enter. Chris and I were in my room, curiously staring from the window to the platform in front of Galadriel's talan where they would sometime arrive.
Chris was over-excited, a broad grin on her face, nervously running up and down, gazing, trying to catch any movement on the staircases on the other side. "I will see him... My Prince... My Legolas... My Greenleaf..."
This constant muttering went for about two hours, and when I was beginning to think about the possibility to tie her up to the wall with the bathrobe belt to get her to be silent, some people figures walked up the distant staircase.
We stared without a word. I tried to recognize someone, anyone. There was a tall person in front, that was obviously Haldir. He was back, my love, and I was very happy; and at the same time I felt that he was happy as well, obviously having known that I had seen him.
Two other persons, a little smaller than Haldir, followed; and then five figures that looked like children. Last were three Elves, obviously, one of them looked different from the two that followed him, moving quite fast and seemed to wear different clothing than the Galadhrim. I tried to recognize him, but darkness and distance made this impossible. Was that Legolas?
I heard a small cry from Chris. Obviously she had seen him as well. When the group approached the platform, the light was better, and even if the distance did not let me see their faces, I could recognize the statues now.
The two human men were first; both dressed in dark leather, one of them with a blue shirt under the vest. I could not yet tell which one of them was Aragorn and which Boromir.
The five `children' turned out to be the four Hobbits and Gimli, the Dwarf, who was clearly recognizable by his long beard and helmet. The Hobbits looked the same from the distance, even if one of them was straw blonde, and a little more full figured than the others. This had to be Sam; and the one that was always nearest to him (or was it vice versa?) had to be Frodo; so the other two were obviously Merry and Pippin.
And then there was this tall, and very slim figure, with golden hair, slightly darker than Haldir's, dressed in green and light blue colors. He was as tall as Haldir who stood behind him so that I could compare them, but he was slimmer; he was lacking the muscles Haldir had.
Again, the small cry from Chris. "Would you please remain silent?" I hissed. " Those Elven ears are better than you could ever imagine, and I do not want to be mistaken for a foolish little girl screaming at the top of my lungs because I have seen Legolas Greenleaf. We are not at the Beatles' concert here, you know..."
She frowned, but could not stop staring at the figures that were so far away from us.
The Lady and the Lord came down the stairs and greeted them, they obviously exchanged some words that we could not hear. I silently took my digital camera and zoomed on them; but the zoom did not bring me close enough to be able to tell which Man was which, especially since I didn't know them anyway.
Frodo's expression was tired, and Legolas was constantly moving, it seemed he felt uncomfortable by standing still.
Gimli's face changed during the conversation, from a `don't come near me' to `I have seen the light' expression, and I smiled.
I took some pictures and thought that this was absolutely crazy. I was taking digital pictures of the real Fellowship of the Ring... "Printouts in poster size for me, please," was Chris' whispered comment when she heard the clicking of the camera. I giggled.
The few minutes that we were able to seem them were soon over, and they were being lead down the staircase again, to wherever they would stay during their time in Caras Galadhon. I sensed Haldir's words in my mind. [I am back, Melamin...] I smiled. [Good to have you at home, love...]
"And now hand me a good Whiskey," Chris stated, leaning back on the bed. "What I have seen tonight is better than anything else before. My Greenleaf, my Legolas," she mused, but I could not stop staring at the proud Galadhrim Warrior that lead the eight Companions.
About half an hour later, Chris and I were sitting on the bed, staring at the TFT display of the camera. We watched the pictures I had taken, giggling like little girls and trying to figure out which Human was which. The door opened, and Haldir stood there, looking at the two of us with the usual, arrogant, eyebrow-arching look that we were already used to.
I jumped up from the bed, my arms fell around his neck, and I kissed him, who was clearly surprised by my action. "Is that the usual way to greet someone for the Humans?"
"No, I was just happy to have you back here."
Chris watched both of us in amusement, the camera before her eye, and I heard a silent clicking.
Haldir frowned. "What kind of box is that?"
"A camera." I answered, "it is something to take pictures with, of the things that you see and like."
We walked over to Chris, she turned on the display and showed the picture that she had taken last of him and me together.
"This is... witchcraft! Is that me, there inside?" Haldir gasped and tried to find a possibility to open the box that `held him trapped'.
I took the camera from his hands. "How do you feel?" I asked.
"Confused... I am inside this box!"
"No, I mean, do you feel as if you were inside this box?"
"Surprisingly not."
"Well, then, maybe, you should just believe that it is harmless and be happy about the possibility to have lifelike pictures without having to pay a master painter, right?" This explanation seemed to be logical for him. "And how does that work?"
Oh dear, the difficult question.
"Uhm... well... to be honest, I really have no idea how it works... it is not witchcraft, for sure, it is just a technical thing that I do not understand... however, I am happy that I have the possibility to take pictures; is that wrong?"
He smiled. "Well, maybe you are right. I was just surprised that something like this exists."
There are many more things in my world that would surprise you even more than just a simple camera, I thought. And how funny it will be if you will ask me to explain them, if I cannot even explain a simple thing like that.
"Did you bring the Fellowship to their beds?" I teased.
"Yes, all of them except of Legolas. " he grumbled, and I saw Chris' eyes lighting up, "He was gone when we arrived at the camp we had prepared for them."
Chris frowned. "He was gone? What do you mean with that?"
"I suppose he jumped onto a tree or something; I do not care, I am quite happy if I do not have to see him; on the other hand I would be glad to know what he is doing, but... well; I do not want to bore you with Legolas. Chris, now that you are here, how do you like our Woods? By the way, did your size change?"
Chris sighed. Sure he didn't bore her with anything concerning Legolas.
"I am sure that Chris is tired now; it was a long day and evening, and tomorrow will be enough time to talk about many things," I said, knowing that if Chris stayed any minute longer, she would pester him to death about Legolas; and besides that, I still had some things to discuss with Haldir.
"I think you're right... will go to my bed and get some sleep; this day was full of adventures that I would like to think about."
