Summary: If there was a passage to Middle Earth from our world, what would you expect to find? or: Tolkien invented Middle Earth - didn't he?
Notes: My OFC(s) are mine; the Elves that Tolkien invented (he did, didn't he?) are not mine (what a pity!). A special "thank you" to the Kronos Quartet / Clint Mansell / Fatboy Robert s for the "Requiem Overture", giving me (and brought me through) several dar k nights when writing this. Thanks to Xavier Naidoo and Rufus Wainwright for their music that inspired me. Thanks to the Goddess for letting me find peace and inspiration. And thanks to my ever-curious and inspiring beta readers, pushing me forward on each chapter.
Dedication: This one is for the two only real Elves on earth; To the Silver One: You will always have a special place in my heart and memories; to the Golden One: You are a legend, a saint and the only true heir of Gil-Galad I know. Let's burn them down! :-)
* SPECIAL WARNING: There are real people avatars innocently depicted in this fic. They belong solely to themselves, no harm became of them and no offence is intended. It is just my way to pay the tribute to these real people, for without them, we would not have words and images of the wonderful Elves in our heads. This is posted with the List Mum's approval.
Chapter 12 - The Woods
The Galadhrim looked at me from head to feet and back when I reached him. "Good afternoon, my name is Rúmil, I am Haldir's brother," he introduced himself.
"We have met before, when I fell off the tree, didn't we?" I asked, still unsure.
"Yes," he replied, "let me guide you through the forest, Haldir is awaiting you."
I followed the tall Elf. As soon as we had passed the first trees and were out of sight from Lord Celeborn and Peter, he turned around with a fast move, started running my direction and embraced me. I stood still, frozen, in shock. Were there any Elven traditions that I did not know about...?
My frozen composure was immediately rewarded with a kiss to my cheek. I stared at him with the coldest possible eyes that I could bring to my surprised expression.
He frowned and tipped his head. "But sister! Why do you stare at me so? I just wished to welcome you in my family!"
I burst out in loud laughter. "Oh, I am so sorry, Rúmil. I just thought that this was another kind of strange Elven tradition I was surprised with, and which I did not want to be part of." He laughed.
I returned his warm embrace. "Welcome brother." I said, smiling at him the best sisterly smile that I had available.
He looked at me intensively, then replied "Well, to be honest; on the one hand I am glad to have a sister now, on the other hand, I am fearing to loose my brother."
I sighed. "We will find a way, Rúmil."
"We will have to," he answered.
He handed me a bundle of clothes with a pair of these incredibly crafted shoes on top. "Put these on, sister," he said, "it will be easier for you to walk through the forest in these clothes. Not that your dress would not be beautiful, but it is no good for the woods."
He stared at me, I stared at him, and seconds passed.
"Well," I said, "would you turn around then, brother? Or do I have to hide behind a tree to get dressed?"
His laughter came out loud. "Any extra body parts that you have hidden?"
I grimaced. The joke that I had made the day before in the pool obviously had gotten around.
I stuck my tongue out and went behind the next tree, just to hear him laughing again.
Minutes later I came back to him, now dressed as one of the Galadhrim, my dress and pouch carefully stuffed into the bag that had been with the bundle, attached to my belt.
"The clothes fit you well. My brother has estimated your size right."
For a moment, I was reminded of something that I read in the books. "How comes that you talk and understand my language?"
His funny, hesitating face made me laugh. "Should I not? I can easily switch to my own language, you know?" And a cascade of chirping, melodious sounds escaped his mouth.
"Uh - no - please... I don't understand this..."
"So why did you think that I would not know your language?"
"Well... I have just heard somewhere that Haldir's brothers don't know about my language."
"We are three thousand five hundred years old, Dana. It is a little boring just to stare at trees and protect the borders for such a long time. Of course we know your language, and many others. We have had enough time to learn them. We just do not like to use them often. You should also take the opportunity to learn some things from us. Maybe you would want to start some training in running?" he smiled. I gave him an angry look. "At home I have a car, I don't need to run. No need to learn this."
The smile became a grin. "I honestly do not have any idea what kind of beast a `car' is, but we are in Middle Earth now, and we have wonderful shoes to run. I insist you should at least try it." And he ran off, and I had to run behind him. If I wanted to follow.
When I thought that my lungs would explode and my side was burning like hell from the running, we arrived at one of the outposts. I embraced a tree, gasping desperately. Another Galadhrim jumped off the tree, and looked at Rúmil. "We will have to train our little sister, do you agree, Rúmil?"
My face must have been covered with sweat, dirt from the floor that I had collected when tumbling over the roots of about any tree in the wood, and burning scratches from the branches that had wiped my face; but I managed to give him an evil glare while still trying to fulfil the desperate need for air that my lungs had.
I was torn from the tree into his arms. "Welcome, sister!"
"Orophin," I tried to say but didn't believe that he understood the breathless gasp.
Someone else grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back, turned me around and I looked at the face of my lover. Sweat was running in small streams from his forehead...
His brothers stared for a moment, then burst out in loud laughter. "Oh brother, forgive me," Rúmil almost cried of his laughter, "I have forgotten that you..."
Haldir tried to catch his own breath, that went as fast as mine. "I barely believe that you forgot the binding," he snarled.
His brothers saw the piercing, angry expression in his eyes and obviously decided that running would be a perfect solution for them to escape.
I went to my knees; the untrained condition of my body was getting me down; but I still had to wonder what the binding did to Haldir when I exhausted myself that much. He sat down beside me, trying to catch his breath as much as I tried to catch mine; we looked at each other and started to laugh.
"Do you think you can walk?" he said after our breathing had almost returned to normal.
I shook my head. "My side is aching," I replied, pressing my hands to my ribs.
He removed my belt and slipped his hand below the tunic. I felt him caressing my damp, hot skin, tracing each rib carefully with his hands. And there it was again, the wonderful sight that I had the evening before; he closed his eyes, murmuring Elvish words, concentrating on my pain.
I closed my eyes, and concentrated on his hand. Every touch was careful, gentle loving in any way I could have seen it. My pain was forgotten soon, and suddenly I felt his hand moving to my breast, carefully playing with my nipple. I opened my eyes, and saw him grinning at me, his thumb still teasing me.
"Ah, so I found a possible way to wake you up?" he said and reattached the belt. "Now, will you walk with me a little? Do not worry, I will not force you through the wood like my little brother..."
With a smile he pulled me on my feet, and started walking; and I had no other chance than to walk behind him.
At first, I saw nothing but trees, trees, did I mention trees, and leaves, lots of leaves, even more than trees. But slowly but surely, Haldir had shown me some things that I would not have discovered if I had been alone.
Dewdrops on the leaves, sparkling in the sun. A strange, fat, yet beautiful blue and golden caterpillar, obviously satisfied in finding a good meal by consuming one of the leaves. The sun shining through the foliage, tracing beams of light through the misty air.
And I felt that a strange kind of feeling grew inside of me. I started to feel at home.
I touched the leaves when I walked through the bushes; they caressed my fingertips. The sun gave me a warm feeling from time to time. The soft floor under my feet gave me a feeling as if I would walk on thick carpets.
"It is beautiful, is it not?" I heard Haldir say.
"Yes, it is. I am feeling just as if I was at home."
He came towards me, embraced me, and looked at me with those blue lakes that were his eyes. "I do truly wish that you can feel at home here, Dana," he said.
"Me too," I whispered.
"Come with me, just a little more to walk!"
He went on, and from one moment to the other he had disappeared. "Haldir?" I asked shyly. No answer. "Haldir?" This time a little louder. Still no answer.
I stepped forward, looking around. "Haaaldiiiir!" I shouted. And suddenly the floor under my feet was gone, and I fell into darkness.
Just a moment later I crashed to a surface, and felt waves of cold water coming over me. I struggled, found my way to the surface and gasped. The grinning Galadhrim swam next to me. "After all that exhaust from running, I thought we both could need a bath," he smirked.
I splashed a wave of water towards him. "You could have said something!"
"Hello?" he adapted my speech from one of the nights before, "what could I possibly say? `Dana, you will fall down into a big lake with cold water if you follow me?' Would you have followed?"
I grinned. "I surely would not, my dearest March Warden," and dunked his head.
He did not come back to the surface, so I started to look around. We were in a cavern; the rocks were wet, glittering in the candlelight. The candles were all over in the cavern that lit it up. Candles? He had planned that. Oh, how much I hated-
Something pulled me below the surface.
I opened my eyes under water, and saw him. He smiled at me, and pulled me towards him with the hand at my belt. The other hand went to my neck, pulling my head closer, and he gave me a deep, sensual kiss. I kissed him back, and we were drifting back to the surface. "Will you forgive me for tricking you so, Melamin?" he asked, and his eyes sparkled in the candlelight. "I will consider," I replied. Never would I get enough of these eyes. Which reminded me of something.
"Is it true that Elves sleep with their eyes open? Or that they do not sleep at all?"
He laughed and instead of giving an answer, swam away from me, to a big, flat rock that was like an island in the lake. "You will find out, someday." he said.
I saw how his wet uniform went to the stone, he stripped item by item from his body, throwing it over, and afterwards he climbed on the rock and stretched his body, arms raised high in the air, standing on his toetips.
The warm, flickering candlelight danced over the wet, glistening skin, and I almost forgot to move my arms and legs in order to stay on the surface when I saw this beauty.
His formerly closed eyes opened, he focused on a point in the darkness before him and jumped off into the water with an elegant move.
I swam over to the stone and was just about to take my clothes off, when I felt his hands on me under water. He took off my belt, and it flew to the stone, coming right out of the water. When he opened the tunic, I could see his hands in the water, but the next moment, the tunic was pulled back behind me, and I could again wonder about wet, flying garments.
I felt him taking off my shoes, which took the way of all clothing in this cavern, and started to wonder about how long he could stay under water. My trousers followed, and I slightly started to worry; but as I could still feel him move below, I was not scared. When he started to open and unlace the backside of my corset, I was really fearing for him to get drowned; but as I still felt his feelings in my head, and they were quite amused, I did not worry.
The corset took its place on the rock; and I felt him coming to the surface behind me; his hands sliding up at my sides, from the feet to the knees, the hips, and when I heard him breathing behind me, his hands were cupping my breasts firmly. I tipped my head back on his shoulder and closed my eyes, feeling his breath on my wet skin when he kissed my neck.
"I could almost suspect that you wanted your brother to make me run through the forest like that? Otherwise you would not have found any reason or excuse for this bath?" I whispered to him. I felt his grin on my neck when he kissed me, and turned around.
"You are sure that you are one of the good guys?" I asked seriously. He sulked. "Was I not always good to you?"
I thought for a moment, then answered "No."
"But I was good enough *for* you, right?" and pressed his body to mine.
I struggled to break free from his strong arms, but did not succeed. I tried to give him a fiery look. "You are arrogant, selfish, and believe yourself to be the center of the world. Why should that be good for me?"
He laughed. "I could almost believe the mask that you have put on, Melamin," he said, "but you are still in my head, and I can feel that you are playing."
Goodbye privacy, I thought and tried to look at him as cold as I possibly could.
"Ah, so you would like to play?" he added, and I felt his hands wandering over my spine.
"Are you not on duty, Warden?" I teased him, circling my finger on his thigh.
"I am on duty. I am just serving you, my lady," he whispered, nibbling my earlobe.
I stroke over his pointed ear, and he shivered. "Oh, I think you are sick, my dearest Warden. You are shaking. I wonder if you have a temperature? Your skin feels so hot."
I could not resist brushing my tongue over his ear; and this time he was almost shaking.
"Yes, you must be very sick. You are trembling, March Warden. You are sure that you can keep your service up?"
Instead of giving me an answer, he pulled me under water.
[Do you still think that you can tease me? I can hold my breath longer than you can...] I heard him in my mind.
[Not if I would urge you to breathe...] I thought back and grabbed his shaft, surprisingly the cold water did not seem to affect him, as what I found and had suspected all the time when he had pressed me to his body was not soft but quite hard, and squeezed him gently. As expected, he brought both of us back to the surface quickly.
"You see, you cannot even hold your breath as long as you usually can. Warden, you are sick and need help," I gasped.
"So what kind of help do you think of?" he replied quietly. "Oh, I would suggest a nice and warm place where you can find some rest, my dear..." and winded my legs around his hips.
He tried to put on a serious face. "I do not think that I would find any rest in the place you offer."
I kissed his ear again, continuously caressing it with my tongue. "There, you see," I commented the already well known reaction of his body, "you are still shaken by your fever. I believe, some rest will bring you some relief."
I felt how he placed his hands under my bottom, obviously bringing me into the right position. "Surprising, Border Crosser... you are also a good nurse," he groaned, "you are caring so well for me..."
I could feel him slipping to my entrance, slowly pushing forward, and sighed. "I love to care for you, my dearest Warden," I replied, "I don't wish you to get too sick; this would keep you from doing your service properly."
"So I shall serve you, as you demand?" He slowly and teasingly started to move inside of me. "Would that be a good idea, in such cold environment? I am afraid that your sickness will get worse..."
He tipped his head towards the water and murmured some Elvish words. Ah, the magic Elven water heater.
The water around us began to steam slightly, and I felt that the heat inside of me that he turned on when he began his `service' was now surrounded by a wonderful temperature from outside my skin as well. "Oh, that is a wonderful environment to help you," I sighed, "now let us care for your sickness, Warden..." I continued to lick his ear and was rewarded with a quiet moan from his lips. His hips were thrusting forward, and this time it was me who had to let him hear about how he aroused me.
"It seems as I have given my sickness to you," he murmured, "you see, you are even already making strange sounds; and you also seem to have some temperature, as I can detect" - he was slowly moving inside of me - "so I guess you need someone to care for you as well."
He started to move both of us through the water. "I will see if I can help you better if I can give you some support."
I felt how he leaned my back to one of the rocks and pushed us up a little, obviously having the ground below his feet, so that the waterline was below my waist. "Now let me try if I can caress your and my sickness away," he whispered when kissing me on the ear. "Let me see how good your medical service is, yes." I answered.
His hands caressed my breasts, and he bowed down to kiss them, while he still moved softly inside of me. I closed my eyes and laid my head down to the stone, letting him find his rhythm in the warm water that surrounded us.
The movements and constant kisses were incredible; and I soon came to a point that I knew was not too far from my climax. Obviously, he was feeling the same.
I leaned forward, and carefully traced the outlines of his ears. His body was shaken, and the water around us lit up from the colorful lights in our bodies.
I took the sensation of watching him; his eyes were closed, the lights dancing in his and my body, the cavern filled with the dancing, glittering lights that were thrown from and back to the water, until my own climax swept me away and I had to close my eyes over the sensation I felt.
He held me in his arms and looked deep into my eyes while he was trying to catch his breath.
"Now, my lady," he gasped, "was that service right for you? Are you feeling better now?"
I smiled sheepishly.
"Oh, my dearest Warden, you are truly good at your service."
"I had a good teacher." He murmured to my ear.
"Is it always like that?" I dared to ask.
"Is what always like what," he replied.
"The lights inside of you and me, are they always there when we do... this?"
"Ah, another chapter that is obviously missing in your books," he taunted.
I frowned. "No, seriously, is it always like that?"
"You do not like it?" he teased.
"Oh yes, I like it a lot... but... tell me, does that always happen when...?"
"When what? When I am planning to make myself proud of my heirs?" he grinned.
I froze. Forgotten were the lights. Least had I expected that answer, nor had I ever thought that he intended to...
My eyes grew wide. "You want to tell me this is not true."
He smiled at me. "You would like to hear what?"
"Are you doing this in order to make me give you an heir?"
"No," he answered, "at the moment I am doing this for my and your pleasure, remember?"
I sighed. "And I was about to think that..."
"...that I had given my heir to you? Well, what would you do if I had? You told me you were experienced in those things, is this nothing that you have thought about earlier?"
I was unsure if he was joking. "Uhm... my books told me that Elves were in control of such things, so..."
"Your precious books are also sure that Lothlorien is not an island, right?"
My expression had grown to dark red. "Haldir of Lórien, you will tell me that you are making fun of me, or are you sure that I am carrying your heir now?"
His smiling remained. "What would be wrong about it? We are bound, so we can have children. I love children, I was always very pleased when I could care for or look after my smaller brothers."
I stared at a spot somewhere in the darkness above me.
"Do not fear, Melamin," he whispered soothingly, "I know that we will first have to find the solution of some things before we can start to plan on our heirs. To answer your questions; yes, the Elves are in control of `such things', and yes, it is always like that; why, can it be different?"
I exhaled in anger. "You are a bastard! How can you trick me that way! Why do you upset me so?"
He laughed and swam away from me. "Come here, come over to me... catch me if you can..."
I leaned forward and jumped into the water, and it was ice cold again. I gasped at the cold.
"Well", he grinned, "I had to cool you down a little, right?"
"Haldir," I asked, "we did that twice now within just a single day, right?"
"Yes, any problems with that?"
"No," I grinned, "but last night you said that the Elves barely do this once in a thousand years, does that mean we won't do it any more for two thousand?"
"Oh, I am under the bad influence of a mortal human," he laughed, "and besides that, I still have some thousand years to catch up, remember?"
I shook my head, smiling.
"You think I am a bad influence on you?"
"Yes, you have... please, keep it up."
After some more playful moments, we collected our clothing which was dry in moments after a spell from a certain Elf. After dressing up, we left the cavern through a small corridor between the rocks, and ended up on a cliff that gave us a beautiful view of the trees below. Far away I could see the glittering surface of the lake that surrounded the island, and felt very much at home when he took me in his arms, pointing at different directions when explaining to me where different places of Middle Earth would be on the horizon.
I turned towards him, with a sad expression. "You will have to bring me back to the border, to the tree," I said, "I have to go now; I have to fetch my friend and have the air and water analyzed in a laboratory; and I want to be back before the Fellowship arrives." His eyes darkened with sadness. "Do you really want to give away these precious days of your time that you can spend here?" he asked. "Yes, I need to. I am searching for the solution how to get either you or me to be able to stay in the other's world."
He sighed. "I will miss you each minute, you know that? And you know that if you do not return quickly, I will first loose my mind and then die, because the place that you have here" - his finger tapped his head - "cannot remain empty so long?"
I wrinkled my forehead. "Do we loose the contact when I cross the border?"
"I honestly do not know about such things," he replied, "I have no idea what happens if one half of a bound couple crosses the border. I do not think that anything likely ever happened. But it will be much worse for you than for me if we should lose the contact, as you are in your world much longer than I have to wait for you here."
I looked at the sky, and felt my own sadness as well as his sadness in my head. Would it be that difficult to be without his feelings in my head?
"We had better go now, but before you leave, I will give you something to remember me."
His words made me remember something, and I picked up the silvery clasp from my bag, carefully pinning it to his cloak. "By the way, if Lord Celeborn asks you, you had forgotten this last night," I grinned.
He raised his brow, and there he was, back as the arrogant March Warden that I had fallen in love with at first sight.
"Forgotten? I never forget something-"
"...yes, if you have left it, it was certainly your intention to do so; I know, you are the tidiest Elf on earth...," I ended his sentence.
"Well learned, Melamin!" he replied self confident.
"Lord Celeborn and Uruviel taught me so, yes."
"They said that? What do they know?"
"I honestly have no idea. Uruviel laughed all morning after she saw you coming from my room and afterwards came to me when I was still asleep - she saw the fabric on the floor and found the clasp. Lord Celeborn just laughed when I told him that you had forgotten this part of your uniform in my room."
His face darkened. "I hope he does not tell his wife; I would not want to upset her at the moment."
We started walking through the woods, and finally came to a clearing. The sun was shining down on the earth in the middle. "You will sit here, by the side," he whispered, "just wait and see."
I took my place, and he went to the center. I saw him standing there, the head arched back, the face turned towards the sun. His eyes were closed, the wind was playing with his hair, and he slowly raised his hands. I was staring amazed at the things that happened then.
The trees around him, the bushes, grass and flowers seemed to lean towards him when he raised his arms. Any floral life on the clearing seemed to concentrate on the Elf that stood there; even the branches of the trees arched down with barking noises. I blinked in disbelief. The smaller branches that came close to him seemed to caress him, stroke his hair, his arms and his body; and the long weed that was at his feet lazily ranked around his legs.
His body was filled with the colorful lights that I already knew; they even sparkled through his clothing. It was an incredible sight; beautiful, this was complete submission of the nature towards this Elf. Even the sun that played with his golden hair seemed to caress him.
I felt a wonderful, relaxing feeling in my mind, and closed the eyes. It was as if the nature was giving the power of the earth to him, as if he was bound to the earth; and by binding to me he shared his feelings with me.
The emotion faded, and when I opened my eyes I could see that he was slowly putting his arms down, and all the plants slowly bent back to their place, as if the wonder that I had just witnessed had just been a dream. I felt how tears fell down my cheeks; I was completely swept away by the sight and the feelings that I shared with him.
He stood there for some more minutes, then opened his eyes, turned around and came towards me, slowly and elegant. I had no words for him.
He just smiled and helped me to get up, giving me a short kiss. I removed one of the leaves that got stuck in his hair, and could not stop smiling at him in wonder about what I had seen.
We walked on without a word, and I saw the nature around me with other eyes. I tried to imitate his way to walk, and felt that it was much better to start stepping to the ground with the ball of my foot first rather than with the heel. I even started to run a little; and though I should have been exhausted from what Rúmil forced me to and the swimming after, I felt good when I was running; Haldir was right behind me, letting me control the speed. "You want to try never to straighten your legs completely when you run." he said. I tried and it became even better.
Too soon we reached the outpost again, where his brothers waited. They stared at us. "Did you have some nice hours in the cavern?" Orophin asked, I blushed, and they both laughed.
The three guided me to the gate between the worlds. It was so simple: Just climb on a tree, and jump down in the right direction. Well, Ok, if you knew which tree.
I changed my clothes back to my elven dress, and got ready for the departure.
Orophin and Rúmil hugged me.
Haldir whispered to my ear: "Cormamin niuve tenna' ta elea lle au'," and even if I did not understand the meaning of his words, they still sounded warm to me; still carrying a tone of sadness.
"Come back; come back soon and safe; Melamin. I need you here with me, and I need you there." He tapped his forehead. I smiled and kissed him. I was sure I would come back.
"I'll take your clasp until I return!" I grabbed his wonderfully crafted cloak closure, earned a smile, and went to the tree.
I climbed. And jumped. Flashlight. And there I was, back in the night of Birmingham, on the floor of a forest in a golf club.
