Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
Special thanks to Lora who co-wrote the next chapters with me, with her great advice on birthing babies from her midwife experiences!!! Since I had a C-Section and never had labor (yay!) she was a great help! Thank you Lora!!!
Time seemed to slip by slowly and Jelena grew exhausted. Legolas stroked her cheek between pains trying to comfort her. He prayed to the Valar to ease her suffering. "Look at me, Jelena. Open your eyes!" Legolas' crystal blue eyes locked with hers, forcing her to look nowhere else. "Listen to my breathing." His fingers gently stroked her temples and down her face and back up again, just a whisper of a touch. He breathed calmly and steadily, forcing her to copy his breathing pattern. Suddenly she groaned again and shut her eyes as another contraction hit her, her control slipping away from her tortured body.
Legolas knew he could do nothing until the contraction passed. When he felt her tension ease he put his hands on both sides of her face. "Open your eyes, Jelena! Listen to my breathing. I am going to try an ancient meditation with you. It is something elves do when we are injured in battle to ease the pain. Just focus on me and my breathing."
Legolas put his forehead against hers and stared into her eyes. Her breathing slowed to the same rhythm as Legolas'. She stared into the blue depths of his eyes and took a deep cleansing breath. She began to hear a faint hum. The hum grew in intensity and it vibrated through her body, relaxing her right down to her toes. It was coming from Legolas somehow, yet he spoke not a word. It was strange and comforting to her. Suddenly an intense pain ripped through her body and she screamed, breaking the contact with Legolas.
"Something is wrong!" Eglantine whispered to Angelica, catching Legolas' eye. She checked Jelena and the position of the baby and frowned. "Legolas, you will need to hold her down. The baby is not coming down correctly. Its backside is trying to come out first. I am afraid what I have to do is going to be very painful. Angelica, hold her legs up!"
"You are strong and beautiful, Jelena," Legolas said. She was so weak she could only stare up at his face. "You have to trust me now. The baby is in distress. We have to get it out now." Legolas straddled her, putting some of his weight on her chest and put his hands on her shoulders to hold her down. "I am sorry, my love, it will be over soon." He nodded to Eglantine that he was ready.
He watched Jelena's eyes open wide with shock, her body attempting to thrash wildly as she shrieked. The violence of her sudden movements took Legolas a bit off guard. She pounded her fists into his chest, trying desperately to get free, the pain controlling her movements. Legolas increased his weight on her, thwarting any further movement. Jelena screamed and then was silent. Legolas glanced back at her aunts to see what they were doing.
Eglantine's expression went from focused concentration to one of elation. "It worked! The baby is coming down now! Legolas get behind her again and help her push."
"I can't do this," Jelena cried. Her body felt like it was no longer her own. "I'm so tired. So tired."
"Jelena! You have to do this! Please! You have to get this baby out now! If you do not, it will die. And you may die as well. I will help you as much as I can. But please, do not give up! Please, my love, do not give up!" Legolas kissed her on the forehead, tears flowing freely from his eyes.
"All right," Jelena sighed, "I will try." She pulled Legolas down to her and kissed him and wiped away his tears. Legolas met her eyes and held them. This time the hum seemed to fill the room, easing her aches and pains. She felt like she was drifting, light as a feather. She felt Legolas lift her back and could hear her aunts urging her to push. She held his gaze and pushed, feeling the baby pass from her. Legolas pulled her back into his arms as they heard the sound of the baby cry.
"You did wonderfully," Legolas said, mopping her brow. Her aunt placed the tiny baby on her stomach like she did the first. Legolas looked at the dark curly hair and smiled. "A son!" He smiled down at Jelena, who seemed to be getting a second wind. "Maerion shall be his name, in honor of your father."
"I like that, as I'm sure he would have too!" Jelena said with tears in her eyes.
Angelica took the boy to clean him up. Eglantine was concerned by all the blood. "You did good, Jelena. Now for the final step. I will have to push on your stomach to get you to contract. We have to expel the afterbirth. You are bleeding a lot and we have to do this quickly." Jelena nodded weakly and held on to Legolas' hand. Eglantine pushed down on her stomach and suddenly stopped. She looked down at Jelena with a surprised look on her face. "I don't believe it!"
Legolas shot Eglantine a worried look. "What is it?"
"It seems that Jelena is not done yet! There's another baby!" Legolas looked down at his wife. She was drained of all color and in shock. She squeezed Legolas' hand and started to cry. "Angelica! Give those babies to Pervinca and come here quickly!" Eglantine shouted into the hallway.
Legolas felt his hand being crushed and looked down at Jelena. Another contraction was radiating over her. Her breath no longer belonged to her lungs, but to the devotion of giving life. A long, low grunt was wrenched from her. She pushed hard with more strength than she felt she herself possessed. Supporting her body, Legolas marveled at how strong his wife was. The contraction passed and Jelena took a deep breath.
"Legolas, I can see the baby's head. Would you like to deliver your child?" Eglantine asked, smiling at the elf.
Legolas looked down at Jelena with a questioning look. "Go ahead," she said, trying to smile. "This will be your only chance. I will not be doing this again!" she laughed, just as the next contraction hit her.
Angelica got behind Jelena and pushed her up. Legolas went to the end of the bed next to Eglantine. "What do I do?" he asked, watching the baby's head stretch his wife open. Legolas winced and gave Jelena a sympathetic look.
p "Help guide the head, like this," she said, taking his hands and placing them on the sides of the baby's dark-haired head. "Now you need to help the baby turn. Okay! Now one shoulder and now the next." The baby was tiny in Legolas' hands. Tears flooded his eyes, as he looked at the precious little girl limp in his hands. "Oh no!" Eglantine gasped. She grabbed a towel and took the baby from his hands. "She's not breathing!"
Eglantine rubbed the baby with the towel, trying to warm and stimulate it. Angelica quickly helped by cutting the cord to free her from her mother. "What's going on, Legolas!" Jelena cried. Legolas looked at her with his jaw dropped open, unable to talk. Tears flowed down his cheeks and he rounded the bed and took Jelena in his arms.
"Come on little one! Breathe!" Eglantine muttered, working hard on the tiny babe. Suddenly the baby's eyes opened and she stared up at the Hobbit looking down at her. "Oh!" Eglantine cried. She wrapped the child in the towel and handed her to Legolas. He placed the baby on Jelena's chest and broke down. Jelena looked at her husband with a surprised look on her face. She reached up and caressed his cheek. She had never seen him so emotional. It made her heart swell with pride, knowing what a wonderful father he would be.
Eglantine pushed down on Jelena's stomach. "Whew! That's it! No more babies!"
Jelena hardly even noticed what her aunt was doing. She looked at Legolas' shining eyes. "Can I ask a favor from you?"
"Anything you want, my love!"
"Can we name her Iris? After my mother?"
"A beautiful name for a beautiful child. She looks just like you, my little edlothia!" he said, tickling little Iris under her chin.
Eglantine and Angelica were relieved that the bleeding eased after the release of the afterbirth. They cleaned Jelena up and put her in fresh bedclothes. Pervinca brought in Bainiell and Maerion and nestled them into Jelena's arms. Legolas and Jelena looked upon their brood. Jelena began to cry. "What is wrong, my love?" Legolas asked.
"Three babies! How am I going to care for three babies!" she sobbed.
"We will do it together!" Legolas said, kissing her on top of her head.
"And don't forget about aunts, uncles and cousins! You have plenty of family to go around!" Pippin said, coming into the room to see the new additions to the family. Pimpernel and Paladin followed and stood at the end of the bed. Astaldo stood in the doorway wagging his tail, curious of the little bundles making noise.
Jelena looked around the room at everyone and dried her tears. She looked down at the precious little lives in her arms. "I do have plenty of family, don't I?" Jelena said, smiling, feeling complete.
