Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

Legolas and Jelena had just fallen asleep and everyone else was sleeping in that morning when the door suddenly burst open. Legolas jumped out of bed and pulled on his leggings and grabbed his knives, just as their bedroom door flew open. "We have trouble," Haldir said. Merry and Pippin flew out of their rooms. Haldir waved his hand to them to follow and led them outside. Sam, Frodo, Pimpernel and Paladin followed. Gandalf and Lirimaer were holding the horses. The three had looks of concern on their faces. "Thranduil is coming."

Legolas took a deep breath. "How many?"

"He had forty with him. They are not far behind." Everyone was quiet.

"Well, we can't just stand here and wait for them to ride up!" Merry shouted. He ran back into the house and came out a moment later. He had the Horn of Rohan that Éomer had given him. He blew it loud and clear. "We'll give your father a surprise he won't expect!"

Thranduil and his troops rode down the road towards Great Smials. They had taken the guardhouse and Robin Smallburrow and the other two Shirriffs hostage. He ordered them to lead them to Prince Legolas. The poor hobbits were terrified and did as they were told. Thranduil rode with Robin in the saddle in front of him. They were a few miles from Great Smials when Robin heard a horn blowing. "So they know we are coming," said Thranduil. "How much further?"

"A few miles," muttered Robin.

"Do not play games with me, halfling. I am no one to toy with," Thranduil said, grabbing Robin by the back of the neck.

"I'm not! It's a few more miles!" Robin shrieked.

Legolas could hear the horses coming. He stood in front of Great Smials with his feet planted firmly under him. He stood alone. He watched the bend in the road. Then he saw his father's horse, followed by his troops. Legolas still held his ground. "Turn around and go back, father!" Legolas shouted. "You're coming here is useless!"

"I do not think so," Thranduil sneered. "Where are they?" He rode up to Legolas and threw Robin from his saddle to the ground.

Legolas helped him up. "Go inside," he said to him. Robin looked back at Thranduil giving him a nasty look and ran for the door.

"Is that where you have them hidden?" Thranduil asked, jumping from his saddle. He pulled his sword and began to move towards the hobbit hole.

Legolas' knives flew out in a blink of an eye. He stood in his father's path. "I will not let you pass!"

"I will kill them! Is that what you want?" Thranduil yelled.

"Why are you obsessed with them, father? Why must you do this? I love Jelena! And I love my friend, Gimli! I will not let you harm them ever again! Even if I must loose my life to protect them!"

"I was made a fool of by dwarves and a hobbit once before! I will not let it happen again!"

"So this is what it comes down to? Something that happened long ago? Let it go, father! Our time here in Arda is fading. The world belongs to them now."

Thranduil waved his troops to move forward. "Find the dwarf and the girl now!" he ordered. The troops dismounted and moved towards the hole.

"Don't do this!" Legolas shouted.

"Step aside, Legolas!"

"No! I will not let you hurt my family!"

p "Your family? Have you adopted the little creatures? So, you have chosen to live with the hobbits?" Thranduil laughed.

"Not just live with them, he also married one." Legolas turned and saw Jelena standing at the door. She had Legolas' bow that he had made her in her hand and carried her sword in the other. Gimli stood next to her with his axe. Haldir and Lirimaer had their bows and swords and Gandalf had his staff.

"Married! You married that creature? How dare you! You are the son of a king! To marry that…"

"That is enough!" Legolas shouted. The point of his knife was at his father's throat. His eyes bored into Thranduil. "You kept me away from her, almost destroying us both. I will not let you hurt us again, even if I have to kill you!"

"Legolas, no!" Jelena yelled running to his side. "Do not kill him! You do not want to live with his blood on his hands! He's not worth the pain!" She wrapped an arm around Legolas' waist.

Legolas lowered his knife. "I ask you once more to leave, father. Please. I will never return to Eryn Lasgalen. My home is with my wife, wherever we may be."

"Then I will take her back to Eryn Lasgalen so you will return!" He shouted directions to his troops to seize them.

Suddenly the hill above and all around Great Smials was covered with hobbits. There were at least one hundred, all armed with bows, pitchforks, clubs or whatever else they could get a hold of. Paladin, Pippin, Merry, Sam and Frodo stood in front on top of the hill. Hobbits came out of the woods alongside the road with arrows pointing at the elves.

"Will you risk the lives of your troops over your anger at something that happened over sixty years ago?" Legolas asked. "Let it go, father and leave Jelena and I alone. We only want to be happy and to raise our children in peace." Legolas' hand slid down Jelena's side and covered her stomach. "She carries your grandchild. What are you going to do?"

Thranduil stood there staring at Jelena's stomach. He closed his eyes and shook his head. "You, Gandalf, are siding with them as well? I thought the Istari are all wise and knowing! Yet you befriend these… creatures, too!"

"Well, Thranduil, my old friend, perhaps that should tell you something!" Gandalf said. "These are a good people. Your realm has had its borders closed for so long that you never learned anything about those around you. Legolas is right. The elves' time in Middle-earth is almost over. Leave these people in peace. Leave your son and his wife in peace. Go back to Eryn Lasgalen." The old wizard smiled at Thranduil.

Thranduil glared hard at Legolas and Jelena. He turned and mounted his horse. "If this is what you choose, Legolas, so be it. There is no coming back. You are no longer from by bloodline."

"So be it," said Legolas. He held Jelena in his arms and watched as Thranduil led his troops down the road, never looking back at his son. Legolas swallowed hard and watched his father for the last time disappear around the corner.

"I'm sorry it had to end this way for you and your father, Legolas," Jelena said, hugging him.

"I am sad, but I am not sorry," Legolas said. He took Jelena into his arms and kissed her. "All I care about is you. You are safe now."

The hobbits gathered in front of Great Smials, congratulating each other for their bravery against the elves. The Thain spoke and gave many thanks to the hobbits of Tookborough. Afterwards they returned to their homes, now that peace had returned to the Shire once more.

They said goodbye to Haldir, Lirimaer and Gandalf and watched them ride off. Legolas led Jelena to the top of the hill where they looked around at the beauty of the Shire. "This will be a great place to raise our elflings," Legolas said, cradling Jelena's belly in his hands.

"Yes, our elfing would be happy here," Jelena said grinning. "Lots of children to play with, fresh air, sunshine, family…"

"Family. Our elflings will have an abundance of that with all your relatives!" He took her hand and stretched out on a soft clump of grass and leaned against a tree. He pulled Jelena down onto his lap. She cuddled into his chest and yawned.

"So what do you want to name them?" Legolas asked, grinning, his eyes heavy with need for sleep.

"We have time to think about that." Jelena closed her eyes and listened to the sound of his heart beating in his chest. Legolas kissed her on top of her head and closed his eyes. They both fell asleep and dreamed of their future in the Shire together in the morning sunshine.
