Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
"Paladin, delightful to see you again," said Gandalf.
"Hullo, Gandalf! It has been a long time since you have been around these parts. What brings you back to the Shire?" Paladin said.
"Well, we come with a surprise for you and your family," Gandalf said, jumping off of Shadowfax. He helped Jelena off Arod and took her hand, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. Glorfindel and Gimli followed behind them. Gandalf walked up to where the Thain stood and put Jelena in front of him. Jelena felt like she had butterflies in her stomach; she was very nervous and hoped they would accept her. "This is your niece, Jelena, daughter of your sister, Iris."
Paladin stepped closer to Jelena, looking her over, head to toe. She stood over a foot taller than he. She tried to smile at him, her face screwing up because she was so nervous. Paladin looked her in the eye, smiled, and hugged her tight. "Oh my goodness! A niece! I thought Iris was lost to us! Oh welcome, Jelena!" He held her out at arm's length. "Angelica, come meet our niece! She is the spitting image of her mother!"
"Oh, sweet girl! Welcome!" her aunt said, hugging her. "You must be tired from your travels. Please, come inside, and your friends, too. You can get cleaned up while we get something together for you to eat. Come, come!" She waved her arm calling everyone to follow them. She directed them to some rooms at the end of a long hall deep in the hill. Glorfindel and Gandalf had to walk stooped over because of the low ceilings. "When you are ready, come down the hall and the kitchen is the second right." Angelica bounced down the hallway towards the kitchen clapping her hands.
Jelena came into the kitchen first. She looked around the room. The walls were rounded, as well as the ceiling. Thick beams ran up the walls and across the ceiling and back down the other wall. There was a small round window at one end, letting in the late afternoon sunshine. There was a fireplace in one corner of the room where a kettle hung boiling water. The room was warm, cozy and cheerful. Her aunt and uncle came out of the pantry with another hobbit. "Jelena," Paladin said, "this is my wife, also your aunt, Eglantine."
"Oh it is wonderful to meet you dear girl!" Eglantine said. "I remember your mother from when we were in our tweens. Come sit down by the fire. We are dying to know more about Iris and Myrtle!"
Jelena looked into the happy, bubbly faces of her newfound family and felt terrible to be the bearer of bad news. "I am sorry to tell you, but Myrtle died long before I was born. My mother and her were on their way to Bree and had stopped along the way to pick some berries to eat along the road. They were attacked by orcs. They killed Myrtle and captured my mother and took her to a place called Dol Guldur to be a slave." Her aunts and uncle sucked in their breaths and looked at each other. Jelena continued, "my mother met my father, Maerdir, there and they fell in love. My father was an elf from Mirkwood."
"Well, no wonder you are so tall!" Paladin said. "I have seen many elves pass through on their way to the Grey Havens. Most were at least six feet tall! So where are your folks now?" he asked.
"They are both gone," she said sadly. "My mother died giving me life. My father died when we escaped from Dol Guldur a few months ago. He was killed by the orcs."
Her aunts both put arms around her, giving her a comforting hug. "Oh sweetie, how ever did you escape?" Angelica asked.
"My father told me to keep running and not to look back. So that is what I did. I ran for many hours until I stumbled across Gimli and Legolas." Saying his name brought a pained look to her eyes.
"Who is Legolas?" Paladin asked.
p "He's…" Tears came to her eyes.
"He is the son of King Thranduil of Mirkwood. A Sindarin Elf," Glorfindel finished.
"Well," said Paladin, "if we ever get to meet Legolas and Gimli, I would like to thank them both for taking care of you."
"You are quite welcome, Master Paladin," Gimli said, entering the room. "I am Gimli, son of Glion from Erebor," he said, bowing low before Paladin.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Gimli," Paladin said. "I have heard of you from the stories my son, Pippin, told us about his adventures with Frodo, Sam and Merry. Please, everyone, come sit down. We are going to make some tea. We also have some cheese and bread and… what else do we have in the pantry, Eglantine?" Paladin and Eglantine scampered off into the pantry. Angelica filled a teapot with hot water from the kettle. Gandalf came into the now crowded kitchen and helped her get cups out of the cupboard.
Paladin and Eglantine returned with trays of food. "Please, don't be shy!" Eglantine said. "Help yourselves!" She handed everyone a plate and a fork and napkin. "Eat!"
Everyone helped themselves to cheese, bread, sliced chicken and fruit. Afterwards, they brought out assorted cakes and pastries. When everyone was finished, Paladin fed Astaldo the remaining chicken and some cheese and patted the dog on his head. "That is a mighty large dog! We can just about look each other in the eye!" he laughed. "Now that everyone has had his fill, let us go outside and enjoy the fresh air."
Gandalf and Glorfindel stood up straight and stretched once outside. It was starting to get dark, the crickets were chirping and the stars were beginning to sparkle in the sky. They sat along a garden wall and on chairs and benches. Paladin pulled out his pipe and offered some pipeweed to Gandalf, who took the pouch and smiled. "Thank you, my friend. It has been a while since I've had pipeweed from the Shire," he said, loading his pipe with the sweet-smelling tobacco. "Much has changed since I was here last," said Gandalf, lighting the pipe and blowing a large ring into the air.
"I should say so!" said Paladin. "The men that had taken over the Shire sure made a mess of things. It will take many years before things will be back to normal if they ever will," he said sadly. "It was a long time that we all went without good Shire weed!" They heard noises coming from down the street. "Ah! Here comes some of our children!" Two male and a female hobbit were walking down the road, singing and laughing.
"I can guess where they have been from the sounds of them!" said Eglantine. "Probably down at the pub!"
The trio stopped their singing when they saw the group in the front yard. They looked at the strange faces until they recognized Gandalf's familiar face. "Gandalf!" They yelled in unison.
"Pimpernel, Pervinca and Peregrin Took!" They ran up to the wizard, hugging him tight.
They let him go. Pimpernel and Pervinca were talking at the same time to Gandalf while Pippin looked at the others in the group. "Gimli? Gimli!" Pippin hugged the dwarf. "What are you doing here?"
"I escorted your cousin here," he said, pointing to Jelena.
"My cousin?" Pippin went over to where Jelena was sitting and took her by the hands and stood her up. He stood just a few inches shorter than Jelena. "My you are a tall hobbit!" he said. "It is wonderful to meet you…"
"Jelena," she said. "It is wonderful to meet you, Pippin. I have heard so much about you from Gimli, Bilbo, Gandalf and Legolas."
p "Oh, you were in Rivendell, I take it! How is Old Bilbo doing?"
"He is doing fine."
"And Legolas? How is he?"
"I…I don't know," she said, her voice shaky with tears.
Pippin sat her down. "What is it? Is he okay?"
"I hope so," Jelena said, tears spilling down her cheeks. Her aunts, her uncle and her cousins gathered around her. "He is getting married in a couple of months."
"Married? Legolas?" Pippin asked. "I can't imagine him getting married. But if he is, is that such a terrible thing?" Jelena cried harder and her aunts came to her side to comfort her.
"His father is forcing him to marry a she-elf from Lórien to strengthen the bonds between the two realms," Gimli said. "Legolas does not love this she-elf from Lórien. He is in love with Jelena."
Pippin's mouth dropped open. "Well, then why is he marrying her? He should be here with Jelena!"
"He cannot," Gimli said. "If he does not marry the she-elf, Thranduil threatened to put Jelena and I in prison. He wasn't going to let us leave his realm until Legolas was married, but Legolas promised he would obey him so he let us go, which is fortunate because…" Gimli bit his lip.
"Because what?" they all asked.
Gimli looked at Jelena. "Because I carry Legolas' child," she said. She was suddenly horrified of what they must all think of her. The silence was deafening.
"Don't you worry, love," Paladin said. "You will stay with us from now on! You can raise your child in the Shire, where it will be loved as you will be!" They all took turns hugging Jelena, making her smile and feel truly happy for the first time in a long while.
Astaldo suddenly stood up from Jelena's side and squeezed his way out of the circle of hobbits. His hair stood up on his back and he began to growl. He was looking in the direction of a stand of trees on the other side of the road. Gandalf and Glorfindel came up and stood on either side of the dog. "What is it, boy?" Gandalf said. The dog continued to snarl, showing his teeth. "Can you see anything, Glorfindel?"
Glorfindel scanned the trees. "Nothing, but something is out there. I think everyone should go inside now. We should not alert them, though. No need to frighten them until we know what it is."
Gandalf turned back towards the group. "Paladin, the air is getting a chill to it. Perhaps we should get Jelena inside so she doesn't catch a cold."
"Of course! Everyone! Inside!" He took Jelena by the hand and led her into the house, followed by Gimli and the hobbits.
Gandalf, Glorfindel and Astaldo went across the road and looked into the woods. Astaldo stopped growling and sniffed the air. Glorfindel looked up in the trees. The dog looked up at Gandalf and wagged his tail. "Well, whatever it was, it appears to be gone," said Glorfindel. They walked back across the road and entered the hobbit hole, closing the door behind them. A pair of eyes watched them from afar, plotting his moves.
