Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

Legolas rode his horse hard and fast. In less than a week he reached Rivendell, his horse exhausted as well as he. He charged through the archway in the garden wall just after sunset. His horse was lathered and sweating. Legolas jumped from the saddle, his legs wobbly and unsteady.

"Legolas! What are you doing here?" Haldir said. Lirimaer was with him. They were snuggling on a bench in the garden enjoying the evening when Legolas bounded in.

"Jelena! Where is she?" he shouted, his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn't wait to see her and take her in his arms.

"She's not here, Legolas," Haldir said.

Legolas ran up to Haldir and Lirimaer. "Where is she?" he said, clutching at Haldir's arm. "I must find her!"

"Just calm down, Legolas," Haldir said. "She left here just about a week ago. She is on her way to the Shire with Glorfindel and Gimli."

"I must go!" Legolas said, going back to his horse.

"Oh no you don't!" yelled Haldir, pulling Legolas off the horse. "That animal is exhausted, and so are you! Stay the night and get a fresh horse in the morning. Lirimaer and I will accompany you."

"You don't understand! I need to find her now!"

"One more day will not kill you!" Haldir said, holding a struggling Legolas in a bear hug. After a while he stopped struggling and Haldir released him. "Please, my friend, rest tonight. We will make a fresh start first thing in the morning. Come, let's get your horse in the stable and get him settled for the night. Lirimaer, can you see to getting our friend something to eat and a room for the night?" Haldir kissed her cheek and whispered, "We'll continue 'looking at the stars' later!"

They sat down at the table with Legolas, watching him devour his meal. "So, Legolas, what is going on?" Haldir asked. "You are supposed to be getting married, are you not?"

"Not anymore. My bride had second thoughts after I told her that Rúmil was in love with her. Turned out, she was in love with him as well."

"Your brother can be a fool!" Lirimaer said to Haldir. "I told him long ago to tell Nevdilien of his feelings. I am glad you straightened the two of them out Legolas. But what about your father? How is he handling it?"

"Not very good," Legolas said. "I did not see him when I left Eryn Lasgalen, but I'm sure it is not over with him. He does not like to loose. Lady Galadriel said Jelena and I have the Valar on our side. I can only hope so." Legolas took another forkful of his food. "I heard Jelena was sick. Is she all right?"

Lirimaer pinched Haldir under the table and gave him the eye to silence him. "She was ill when we left Eryn Lasgalen, but she was fine after we arrived here."

Legolas looked at his friends with suspicion. "You're not telling me everything, are you? What are you hiding? What is wrong with her?"

"Nothing is wrong with her, Legolas!" Lirimaer insisted. "Jelena is just fine! She was very happy to be going to the Shire."

Legolas looked his friends over one more time. He still felt like they were holding something back from him, but he knew he wouldn't get it out of them.

"Legolas! What a surprise to see you!" Legolas turned to see Elrond and Bilbo entering the room.

"Mae govannen, Lord Elrond," Legolas said. "Hello Bilbo. It is wonderful to see you are doing well."

"Thank you, thank you Legolas!" Bilbo said. "I see that you have gotten yourself together and decided to come for that lovely girl, Jelena!"

Legolas smiled at the old hobbit. "Yes, I have. I hope that she will take me back after everything."

"I do not think that there will be any problem with that, especially in the condition she is in," Bilbo said.

"Will someone please tell me what is wrong with her? Is she really sick? I need to know!" Legolas shouted.

"Please, Legolas, sit down," Elrond said, putting his hand on Legolas' shoulder. "She is fine, it is just that…"

"She was sick from a broken heart," Lirimaer interrupted. Elrond, Bilbo and Haldir looked at her with surprise. "With Elrond's help and the help from her friends, she is well. She will take you back, Legolas." Legolas sighed a breath of relief. The others gave Lirimaer a questioning look and she held a finger to her lips. "Legolas, you are exhausted. You should get some rest if we are to leave early tomorrow. I will show you to your room."

"I could use some rest. Thank you for the meal. I wish you all a good night," he said, following her out of the room.

p "What did we miss?" Elrond said.

Lirimaer came back a few moments later. "I'm sorry I interrupted you, Lord Elrond. It is just that I think we should let Jelena tell him about the child she is carrying. If we had told him, he would have been out the door tonight and we would not have been able to stop him. He is exhausted and needs to rest. You know he would not stop until he got to the Shire, killing his horse and himself to get to her."

"That was a wise decision, Lirimaer," Elrond said.

Legolas laid his head on the pillow closing his eyes. He smelled a familiar scent that made him smile. Jelena had slept in this bed, he thought, pulling the pillow to his face and inhaling deeply. Her scent was still strong. He hugged the pillow to him and fell asleep with a smile on his face.

Legolas slept well past sunrise. He awoke when he heard a knock on his door. Haldir entered the room. "Are you going to get up? It is getting late! Or have you changed your mind about going to the Shire?" Haldir joked.

Legolas flew from the bed, quickly getting dressed. "Why did you let me sleep so long? We should have left hours ago!"

"Because you needed to sleep. Everything is packed and ready. The horses are all saddled. Just grab something to eat and we will go."

"I am not hungry. Let's go," Legolas said, heading for the door.

p Haldir grabbed his arm and spun him around. "Do you need a baby sitter? You will eat something! I will not have you getting run down. Or do I have to shove the food in your mouth and make you chew it?" Haldir said, trying to look intimidating.

"Fine! I will grab something to eat… on the go!" Legolas said. Lirimaer was waiting downstairs for them with some eggs and toast for Legolas. "Thank you, Lirimaer," he said. He flipped the eggs onto the toast and made a sandwich. He took a large bite of it, right in Haldir's face. "Let's go!" he said with his mouth full. He quickly strode out the door.

"We are going to have a hard time keeping him under control," Haldir growled to Lirimaer. Lirimaer laughed and followed after Legolas. Haldir stomped off after her.

Legolas was already in his saddle, cramming the remaining bit of sandwich in his mouth. He held his empty hands up to Haldir for inspection. Haldir nodded at the elf, grumbling to himself. Elrond said he would get a message off to the Lord and Lady of the Wood, telling them that Haldir would be away longer. They said goodbye to Elrond and Bilbo and rode out through the garden wall.

"We can be to Bree in two days if we hurry," Legolas said.

"But we will take three, so as not to exhaust the horses," said Haldir. He glared at Legolas. "I know that you are anxious, my friend, but do not rush. We are but a week behind them. We will get there."

Legolas knew deep down that Haldir was right. He had to take it easy on the horses. But now that he was free from his marriage and his father, all he wanted and could think about was spending eternity with Jelena. And he wanted to start right now.

~*~*~*~

Gandalf led the group into Tuckburrow two days later. Many of the trees had been cut down and there was much destruction to the landscape. Jelena looked around with sad eyes. She was glad old Bilbo was unable to go with them. It would have broken his heart to see what happened to the Shire. There were many hobbits around, watching the group ride by. The sight of Gandalf brought smiles to many faces, but some seemed uptight about seeing the wizard. Gandalf only smiled and nodded at them all.

Jelena rode up next to Gandalf. "Some of them don't seem too happy to see you, Gandalf."

"I am aware of that," he said, smiling at her. "Many of them think that I brought trouble with me when I use to visit Bilbo and Frodo. They didn't understand that the world was changing around them and had begun to trickle over their borders. Unfortunately, I happened to have been around at the time," said Gandalf. He nodded to an elderly hobbit that was working in a garden bed. The hobbit gave Gandalf a cold stare and went back to pulling weeds. Gandalf only chuckled to himself.

They rode up to a large hill with many windows and round doors in the side of it. Chimneys puffed smoke out of the top of the hill. A group of hobbits were working in the yard, tidying up the gardens and taking care of livestock. They turned at the sound of hooves and watched the group approach. "We are here," Gandalf said.

"Where?" asked Jelena.

"Why, Great Smials, of course! Your families' home!" Gandalf said.
