I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

Jelena was sleeping soundly when someone shook her awake. "Jelena, if we hurry we can be at the Shire border by this evening. Let's get up," Glorfindel said. He bent over and scratched Astaldo's head.

Jelena looked out the window. It was still dark outside. She flopped back down onto her soft pillow and closed her eyes. Astaldo got up and pulled the blankets down onto the floor. "Okay! I'm getting up!" Jelena said to him. She rubbed her eyes and got out of bed. She washed, got dressed and went downstairs.

Butterbur was up making them breakfast. "Good morning, miss!" he said cheerfully. "Care for some breakfast?" He put a plate of eggs and bacon in front of her with a bowl of oatmeal. "I am packing some food for you to take with you," he said, heading back to the kitchen.

After breakfast, they packed up their horses and said goodbye to Bree. The sun was just starting to rise when they rode out the gate with Glorfindel leading the way. They rode the horses hard most of the day, only slowing down when they could see the South Downs in the distance. A short time after that, they came to the Old Forest.

Glorfindel stopped his horse. "I hear a rider approaching. Get off the road," he said, leading them behind some bushes. He dismounted and held the horses' reins. Gimli and Jelena leaned foreward towards Arod's neck.

"Hello there!" said a voice from out on the road. "No need to hide. I am a friend."

Glorfindel recognized the voice. "Gandalf!" he shouted as he led the horses back onto the road. "Mae govannen! It is wonderful to see you again!"

"Gandalf!" Gimli chimed in.

"Gimli! What on earth are you doing here?" the wizard asked. "I thought you were traveling with Legolas?" Gandalf smiled at the girl sitting behind the dwarf. She looked sad at the mention of the elf.

"Gandalf, this is Jelena. We are taking her to the Shire to meet her family," Gimli said. "Legolas couldn't come with us." Gimli looked down at the ground.

Gandalf knew something was wrong but didn't want to press it from the looks on Jelena and Gimli's faces. "Well, Jelena, it is delightful to meet you. I have been to the Shire many times."

"Where are you coming from now, Gandalf?" Gimli asked.

"I was visiting with a dear friend of mine, Tom Bombadil. I wanted to let him know that Frodo had successfully destroyed the Ring and that the evil power was gone. He said," Gandalf chuckled, "he never even noticed a war was going on! His world is quite untouched and unchanged. Perhaps you won't mind if I ride with you? I wouldn't mind checking up on my hobbit friends myself; see how they are making out."

"Not at all, Gandalf," Glorfindel said.

They rode in silence for a while. Gandalf thought he would break it by talking with the girl. "So, Jelena is it?" She nodded to the wizard. "Who is your family in the Shire? I know most of the folk that live I the Shire. Perhaps I know them."

"My uncle Paladin is the Thain, do you know him?"

"Oh my goodness gracious!" Gandalf said. "Do you know what this means, Gimli? This young lady is related to our young Peregrin Took! Ha! You said you are going to meet your family? Where are you from?"

"Dol Guldur," Jelena said. She tried to quickly explain everything to Gandalf about how Legolas and Gimli had found her, going to Eryn Lasgalen, the problems they had there, and how Legolas was to be married. She left out the part that she loved Legolas and how her heart was breaking. But the unshed tears in her eyes explained it all to the kindly old wizard.

Gandalf gave Jelena a sympathetic smile. "You have had a rough life, young lady. I hope that you will find peace in the Shire." Then Gandalf changed the subject. "I know that you will enjoy your cousin Peregrin, who we all call Pippin. He is quite the character," Gandalf laughed. "And your other cousin, Meriadoc. He is a good soul as well. The two were very brave warriors during the war. They even managed to surprise this old wizard!"

"I am very much looking forward to meeting them all. The only family I have ever know was my father and now that he is gone, I have no one," Jelena said sadly.

"You have your friends! Don't forget about us! You have me, Glorfindel, Lirimaer, that arrogant elf, Haldir, Elrond, Leg…" Gimli quickly shut his mouth. Jelena smiled at him, letting him know his slip was all right.

"You are right," she said, "I have many friends."

"And I'm sure a sweet girl such as yourself will make many more!" Gandalf said. "You remind me of a very distant cousin of yours, a Mister Frodo Baggins."

"Bilbo's nephew?" asked Jelena.

"The very same! You are both soft-spoken yet I can feel strength in you like the strength in him. It will show itself when it is needed. You do have a striking resemblance to Pippin, but you are much prettier than he!" laughed Gandalf.

It was almost dark when they reached the Brandywine Bridge. They crossed over, only to be stopped by a gate on the other side. Gandalf got off Shadowfax and knocked on the gate. "Hello!" he yelled. He looked around and noticed that the Bridge Inn was no longer standing. New buildings had been put up in its place as well as new houses along the river. Much had seemed to change since Gandalf was here last.

"Who's there?" called a voice.

"It is Gandalf. We wish to see the Thain of the Shire."

"We?" they heard back. They saw three hobbits in uniform come out of the two-story building on the other side of the gate. They were carrying spears and did not seem too friendly. "No one is allowed through the gates after dark, Gandalf, except for hobbits. This is by order of Frodo Baggins himself."

"Frodo!" laughed the wizard. "I am a good friend of his. Aren't you his friend, Robin Smallburrow? Surely you can make an exception for a friend of the hobbits, Robin."

"I was told no one after dark except hobbits!" Robin said.

"I am a hobbit," Jelena said, sliding down from Arod's back. "And these are my friends. Now open the gate!"

"I'm sorry miss. You can come in but your friends cannot."

"I am the niece of the Thain himself! How dare you defy me! Now open the gate!" she shouted at the Shirriffs.

Robin turned and looked at his friends. He walked up to the gate. "Don't do it Robin! We were told no one…"

"Enough!" Robin yelled. "Gandalf has been known in these parts for more years than I have lived. And surely an elf and a dwarf are no problem. Many have crossed our lands before." He unlocked the gate and let them through, closing it and locking it behind them.

They made themselves at home at the Shirriff's guardhouse. "Thank you for inviting us to stay," said Gimli, eyeing up Robin Smallburrow. "I am sure that Master Frodo and the Thain will appreciate how well you are treating us."

"Do you have some soap and a tub that I can wash my dress in?" Jelena asked. She wanted to have her new dress clean and ready to meet her relatives in. They brought her what she needed and washed her dress and hung it to dry. They ate their dinner, sharing their food with the Shirriffs, and talked to them afterwards about the changes in the Shire.

"Much has changed since you were here last," said Robin. "Lotho Sackville-Baggins had taken over Bag End and made himself Chief. He hired gangs of ruffians who bullied us all around. They took our crops from us, and our beloved pipe weed! They said that it was for gathering and sharing. We didn't know what they were doing with it for the longest time. But then we saw the wagons heading east during the night. They cut down many trees and slapped up shanty houses and sheds in place of our beautiful hobbit holes, many of which they dug out. Down in Hobbiton they tore down the old mill and put up a new, larger one that spoiled the pond with its filth. And the Tree! They cut down the Party Tree!

Well, it was a wonderful day when Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin returned! They got everyone to come together and clear out all the ruffians. No one really knows what happened to old Lotho after Sharky came to town, but it has been said that Sharky's man, Worm, killed him."

"Sharky?" asked Gandalf. "Who is that?"

"You knew him, Gandalf. He was a wizard," Robin said.

"A wizard?" Gandalf sat and thought about it for a moment. "Do you mean Wormtongue? Gríma Wormtongue?" Robin and his men nodded. "Saruman!"

"Yes!" Robin said excitedly. "That's what Frodo called him. Well, that Wormtongue character stabbed the old wizard in the back. Then a bunch of hobbits put arrows in Wormtongue. I heard that smoke rose from the wizard's body and disappeared, leaving nothing but withered skin and bones."

Gandalf shut his eyes and shook his head. He felt sorry for his fellow wizard, who let Sauron's madness take him over. He took a deep breath and smiled at everyone. "Well, it seems that I have missed a lot in the Shire. It is good to know that those four brave hobbits have managed to remove the bad men from the Shire. They have changed in many ways from the hobbits they were a year ago. It will be good to see them again. Perhaps we should get some rest. It looks like some of us are in need of it!" Gandalf said, looking over at Gimli and Jelena, both dozing in their chairs.
