Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
A week had passed since Aragorn and Arwen had arrived. Legolas was actually feeling and looking better from having his friends around him. But his heart ached for Jelena, he missed her terribly and thought of her often. He confronted his father on the actual date of the wedding. Thranduil admitted to pushing it up a month and didn't think that Legolas would mind, since he did not want to get married anyway. Legolas just shrugged it off. Aragorn was surprised at the way his friend had changed, like a high-spirited horse that had been broken and beaten.
Now Legolas, Thranduil, Aragorn and Arwen stood outside of the Elvenking Halls watching the arrival of the Lord and Lady of the Golden Wood. It was like a sudden slap in the face for Legolas, for he truly realized what he was in for. The sky was dark and it was beginning to rain. He watched Celeborn and Galadriel ride up to them with a miserable, glazed look. A girl rode in between them. She had silver blonde hair like Celeborn and deep blue eyes and the same sad look in her eyes as Legolas. Orophin and Rúmil rode up behind them, both looking rather somber.
Celeborn dismounted and helped Galadriel down. Next he helped Nevdilien down. They came and stood before Thranduil and Legolas. "Lord Thranduil and Prince Legolas, I present to you my cousin, Nevdilien," Celeborn said. Thranduil and Legolas bowed to the nervous she-elf who was gripping Celeborn's hand so tight her knuckles were white. Legolas glanced at Rúmil and saw the pained look in his eyes. Celeborn offered her hand to Legolas, and he placed it around his arm. He turned and led her through the gate, down the passage towards her room.
They both were silent as they walked down the passage. Legolas was looking straight ahead while Nevdilien stared at the floor ahead of her. She glanced up at Legolas, noticing that the prince was clenching his teeth. It made her smile. He is just as uptight as I am, she thought. The Lord and Lady followed them, with Orophin and Rúmil behind. Legolas had set up the room across the hall fro Nevdilien, with Celeborn and Galadriel on one side and Orophin on the other. Even though he had a hard time bringing himself to putting anyone in Jelena's room, he set Rúmil up in the room that adjoined his. "I hope the room is all right for you," Legolas said to Nevdilien. "If you need anything, just ask. I'll leave you to get ready for dinner," he said, quickly turning to go out the door.
"Thank you, Prince Legolas," she said.
Legolas turned towards her. "You don't have to call me Prince. Legolas is fine," he said with a small smile. "We don't need any formalities, Nevdilien. I'll be back in an hour to escort you to the dining hall." Legolas went across the hall to his own room and shut the door behind him. He sat on his bed and took a deep breath. How am I going to do this? he thought to himself.
He got up and knocked on the adjoining door. "Come," he heard from the other side.
"Rúmil, I hope everything is satisfactory here for you," Legolas said, clearly uncomfortable around his old friend.
"It is all right," Rúmil said, coldly.
"Rúmil, I am sorry. I don't know what to say. I did not know she was the one you loved when I agreed to this…marriage. Did you ever talk to her and tell her how you feel?"
"How could I? She has agreed to marry you. It is obvious she has no feelings for me more than friendship. She is yours, Legolas," he said, looking down at the floor. Rúmil felt incredible sadness in his heart and wondered how he would make it through their time here in Eryn Lasgalen. He wanted more than anything to be on his way back to the Golden Wood, to his work on the borders.
Legolas sighed. "Again, my apologies." He went back to his room and threw himself on his bed, closing his eyes. A knock came from his door. What now! he thought. He opened the door to find Galadriel standing there.
"Hello, Legolas. Do you have a moment?" she asked. Legolas stepped aside so she could enter the room. She sat down at a small table in the corner. She looked into Legolas' eyes, which showed the strain he had been under the past few weeks. "Please sit with me," she said, motioning to the chair next to her. "Legolas, why did you agree to this marriage when I know your feelings for Jelena?"
Legolas put his elbows on the table and put his face in his hands. After a moment, he looked up at Galadriel. "My father threatened to imprison Jelena and Gimli if I did not do this," he said. "You know how my father can be. I should never have come back to Mirkwood. But something kept pulling me here. I should have known better and gone in the opposite direction!"
"And then who knows what would have become of Jelena. Perhaps the Valar were telling you to come home for the purpose of finding her."
"A lot of good it has done me! Or her! We cannot be together!" Legolas cried, jumping to his feet. He began to pace the room, something he did a lot since he sent Jelena off to the Shire.
"Please, Legolas, sit down." Legolas sat back down and Galadriel took his hands in hers. "Who says you cannot be together? Thranduil? Does it really matter what your father thinks?"
"He said he would hunt them down and imprison or kill them if I don't marry Nevdilien. He would do it too just to spite me." Legolas rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on.
"I believe you are right on that," Galadriel said, smiling at Legolas. "But I believe you have the Valar on your side. Remember what I said to you when I saw you last? 'Follow your heart.'" Galadriel stood up. "Well, I must get ready for our stimulating dinner with your pompous father!" she laughed. She walked to the door and opened it. "Follow your heart, Legolas." She closed the door behind her.
Legolas got dressed for dinner and went across the hall to Nevdilien's room and knocked. "You are here already?" she said. "I have not changed yet."
"I am not here to escort you yet," Legolas said. "We need to talk. What do you think about Rúmil?" He entered the room and closed the door behind him.
~*~*~*~
Legolas sat next to Nevdilien and she sat next to Thranduil. Galadriel was on the other side of Thranduil, which didn't make either of them too happy, with Celeborn to Galadriel's left. Arwen sat between Rúmil and Celeborn and Orophin was next to Legolas. Aragorn was at the other end of the table. Everyone was quiet and eating their food, except for Nevdilien and Legolas. They both pushed their food around their plates.
"I everything all right, my dear?" Thranduil asked Nevdilien.
"Yes, Lord Thranduil. It is just…"
"What is it?" Thranduil pressed. Nevdilien looked at Legolas and he nodded and smiled at her.
"I have decided that I cannot marry your son." She said. Everyone looked up with their jaws dropped, except for Galadriel and Legolas who were smiling.
"What is this?" Thranduil said, jumping to his feet. He quickly turned on his son. "What have you done, Legolas?"
"He has done nothing," Nevdilien said. "I do not love your son, though he is kind and handsome," she said, smiling at Legolas. "My heart belongs to someone else. Rúmil?" she said, looking into his bewildered eyes. "It is you that I love. I just never had the courage to say so."
"Ha!" laughed Orophin. "I told you to talk to her but nooooo! You wouldn't listen to me and you almost lost her! You are a lucky elf, Rúmil!"
"Yes I am," he said, making his way around the table. He took Nevdilien's hands and helped her up from her chair. "I have loved you for some time," he said, taking her face in his hands. "I am a fool for not saying so." Rúmil kissed her, long and passionately, ignoring all the eyes that were on them.
"What is going on here?" shouted Thranduil.
"Well, it looks like the wedding is off," said Galadriel, smiling. She turned to look at her husband, who had a puzzled look on his face. A small grin appeared on his face, then it spread from ear to ear.
"I have a feeling you had something to do with this!" Celeborn whispered to his wife.
"Who, me?" she whispered back. She kissed her husband's cheek. "Maybe I gave a little push in the right direction."
"Will someone tell me what is going on!!!" Thranduil yelled.
"Well, Father, it looks like there will not be a wedding," Legolas said, grinning at Thranduil. "Well, congratulations to you both," he said to Rúmil and Nevdilien. "Arwen, Aragorn, Celeborn and Galadriel, if you will excuse me, I have to pack a few things before I leave," Legolas said. "Goodbye, Father," Legolas said, and turned to leave.
"Just one moment, Legolas! Where do you think you are going?"
"I am going to find my love, if she will take me back after I sent her away."
"You are going nowhere! What about your deal? I told you I will find them and…"
"Goodbye, Father!" Legolas walked casually out the doorway but as soon as he was in the passage, he ran to his room to get his things together.
He was at the gate with his belongings a few minutes later. Everyone was there waiting for him, except his father. "Safe journey to you, my friend," Aragorn said, hugging him tight. "I should like to meet this special girl one day."
"Perhaps you shall! Arwen, take care of him and your little one," Legolas said, hugging a weeping Arwen.
"I will, Legolas. You must come visit us!"
"Orophin, watch over your little brother!" Legolas said. "Don't let him go without saying what's on his mind ever again!"
"I think perhaps he has learned his lesson!" Orophin laughed, punching Rúmil in the arm.
"Rúmil, Nevdilien, much happiness to you both," Legolas said, kissing Nevdilien on the cheek.
Rúmil grinned at Legolas. "I don't know what to say except thank you."
"You need not say anything to me," said Legolas. "Thank the Lady Galadriel!"
"Well, I am off to follow my heart," he said to Galadriel. "Thank you for opening my eyes. I hope that you are right about the Valar. My father's wrath will be swift, of that I am sure. I will need all the help and luck I can get!"
Galadriel kissed Legolas on the cheek. "Take care young prince. Celeborn and I will try to calm down your father."
"Then you have a hard task ahead of you!" Legolas joked.
Galadriel and Celeborn laughed. "Namárië," Galadriel and Celeborn said. Legolas left them and ran for the stables. He got his horse and rode by the gates, waving goodbye to his friends.
