Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
"Must you go so soon?" asked Lirimaer. She hugged Jelena tight in her arms. "Can you not stay until after the baby comes?"
Jelena shook her head. "I need to do this. I need to find my family. I love it here in Rivendell; you have all been so nice. But I do not feel like I belong here. I will miss you all very much," Jelena said. She smiled at Lirimaer and Haldir, giving them each a kiss on the cheek. "Take care of each other and thank you for everything you have done for me. Perhaps we will meet again."
"You can be sure of that, Jelena. I have never been to the Shire," Haldir said. "Perhaps the wife and I will journey there one day." He turned and put his arm around Lirimaer, kissing her on the cheek. "Watch over her, dwarf," Haldir said to Gimli, towering over him trying to look menacing.
"Don't you worry, elf. She is in good hands!" Gimli said, puffing himself up to meet Haldir's posture. "You just take care of your beautiful Lirimaer," he said, taking Lirimaer's hand.
Jelena went to Bilbo next. "I will find your nephew and let him know that you are well. Thank you, Bilbo, for everything. I enjoyed hearing about the Shire and my mother from you. I cannot wait to meet all the wonderful Hobbits you have told me about! Take care," she said, kissing the old hobbit's cheek.
Bilbo patted her hand in his. "You take care as well, my dear girl. Safe journey to you!"
"Elrond, thank you for everything," she said. "And thank you for sending Glorfindel along with us." Gimli made a slight growling noise, making Elrond grin.
"You are most welcome, Jelena. The road west is dangerous. Glorfindel will lead you the safest way possible to the Shire." Elrond stooped down and looked into Jelena's eyes. "Remember, you are always welcome at Rivendell." He turned to Gimli and took the dwarf's hand. "The invitation is open to you as well, Master Gimli." Gimli nodded and thanked Elrond for his hospitality. "Take care of yourself and the little one," Elrond said, kissing her upon the forehead. "Watch over them well, Glorfindel."
"I will, my Lord," Glorfindel said, bowing to Elrond. Glorfindel helped Jelena onto Arod's back where Gimli was already perched. He mounted his horse and led them through the archway in the garden wall. They were soon on the path to the Ford of Bruinen.
They made it to the Last Bridge by late afternoon and followed the Great East Road west. When it began to get dark, Glorfindel led them from the road to a clearing for the night. "It is not safe to be on the road after dark," he said. "Evil men have been traveling this road heading east in the past week. I hear they are coming from the Shire. They were hired hands of someone called Sharky. It seems the Hobbits have retaliated against them and have taken the Shire back." He made a small fire and Gimli and Jelena sat down next to it to chase off the night chill. They had something to eat and Jelena and Gimli went to sleep while Glorfindel kept watch, his elven eyes piercing the darkness.
The next day proved to be uneventful. They passed no one on the road and enjoyed the warm sunny day. However, that night was different. Glorfindel once again took them off the road and set up a fire. Jelena and Gimli were dozing when Glorfindel woke them. "Men approach," he said, quickly dousing the flames. He covered the fire with dirt to extinguish the smoke. Glorfindel went down to the road. Jelena and Gimli heard nothing for a long time. Then the sound of common speech came to their ears.
They crouched down close to the earth so they would not be seen. There were ten of them. The men were staggering, obviously drunk, and laughing and swearing. They were large and menacing, and Jelena could smell their foul stench some fifteen yards away. The smell made her stomach turn.
"Hey wait! Do you smell something?" one of them asked.
"Only your stinking breath!" another answered, laughing hysterically.
"No, you dunderhead, something burning! Someone had a fire nearby. I think we should look into it. Who knows what we will find!"
Glorfindel had his bow in hand with an arrow notched. He watched the men move farther down the road, as quiet as drunken fools could be, scanning the woods. The meal in Jelena's stomach was churning. "Gimli, I am going to be sick!" she whispered. She crawled on her hands and knees away from the camp and made it a few feet before the contents in her stomach came up.
"Over there!" shouted one of the men, pointing in the direction of their campsite. Before the man could take a step, Glorfindel shot him in the chest. He took out two more before the others got frightened and ran off. Glorfindel ran back to their site. "I was hoping we would go unnoticed," he said, looking over at Jelena with a slight grin.
"I am so sorry!" she said. "They smelled so horrible and my stomach began churning and I just couldn't help it!"
"It is all right, Jelena. The stench of them made my stomach recoil as well! I have heard that female elves are very sensitive to offensive odors when they are with child." He handed Jelena a small waterskin. "Elrond gave this to me, in case you were feeling poorly. Sip it. Gimli, would you please help me remove them from the road? I do not think Jelena can help. She would just get sick on them!" he said, winking at her. "I think it would be wise if we moved on. Do you think you could ride a few more hours to Bree?" he asked Jelena.
"I do not think I could possibly sleep any more tonight after this," she said. She picked up the blankets and supplies while Glorfindel and Gimli dragged the bodies from the road. Jelena could have sworn she heard Gimli wretching. They returned and washed the stink from their hands and were once again on their way.
It would be several hours before the sun would come up. They made it to the gates of Bree three hours later. They knocked on the gate and waited. After a short time, a man opened a tiny opening in the door. "What do you want?"
"We have come seeking lodging for the night," Glorfindel said.
"We?" he asked, looking around and then opened another tiny opening a few feet down. Jelena smiled and Gimli grumbled at him. "Tis a strange group that stands before the gate! An elf, a dwarf and a very tall hobbit! Come in quickly! There has been a bad element around here lately. Hurry!" He quickly unbolted the gate and let them enter. "You can find the Prancing Pony a short ways up the road. Ol' Butterbur probably won't like being waken up at this time of the night," the old man cackled.
The houses were dark and the street was silent, except for the clopping of the horses' hooves and the tinkling of tiny bells on Glorfindel's reins. They walked the horses up the dirt street until they came to the inn. The windows were dark with no sign's of life. Glorfindel pounded on the door. A moment later they saw candlelight coming to the door and heard a man muttering. The door opened a crack. "What is it?"
"We come seeking lodging," Glorfindel said. The man poked his head out the door looking the trio over. "Oh, my goodness! We don't get many elves here! Come in, come in! Tie your horses there and I'll have my man bring them to the stables and care for them."
"I will take them myself, sir. I am afraid my horse will not obey anyone else. Please, just see to my friends," Glorfindel said, leading the horses to the stables.
"We don't get many dwarves as well. My name is Butterbur. And who may you be?"
"I am Gimli, Master Butterbur, and this is Jelena. Our companion is Glorfindel."
Butterbur looked Jelena over. "You are very tall for a hobbit, young miss, if you don't mind me sayin'. What part of the Shire are you from?"
"I am half elf," she said, Butterbur's eyebrows shooting up in surprise. "I've never been to the Shire. That is where we are heading now, to find my family."
Butterbur got a worried look on his face. "You must be careful, miss! A lot of evil things have been going on there from what I hear! Bad men had taken over. Although a lot of them have been seen passing through heading east from the Shire. We had four hobbits come through here a few weeks ago dressed in fancy armor. They said they were on their way home from Mordor of all places!!! I warned them as well. They said they would look into things."
"Ah!" Gimli chuckled. "That would have been Master Frodo and his entourage! Indeed they did come from Mordor. Fine little warriors those hobbits turned out to be!"
"Do you require anything to eat tonight?" he asked, yawning.
"I do not think so, just someplace to rest," Jelena said.
Butterbur led them to their rooms. "Nothing special, but they are clean and the beds are soft. If you require nothing else, I will leave you now. Goodnight," he said, heading back down the stairs. A short time later, they both heard the stairs creaking from Butterburs' weight, leading Glorfindel to his room. Jelena snuggled into the warm covers and was soon asleep.
The next morning Jelena asked for bath water. She took a long bath, her muscles achy from riding. She got dressed and noticed her dress was beginning to feel snug around her belly. She was only just over two months pregnant. She was famished and found Gimli and Glorfindel sitting quietly at a table, eating eggs with toasted bread and some other baked goods. "Good morning," she said and sat down with them.
"Good morning, lass," said Gimli.
"Good morning," Glorfindel said. "Did you sleep well?"
"Oh yes! Very well." She picked up a sticky bun and took a bite. It was filled with strawberry jelly. She was eating her second when Butterbur came over.
"Would you like something hot from the kitchen to eat, young miss?"
"Yes, whatever they had will be fine, thank you."
"I think we should stay until tomorrow morning," Glorfindel said. "It will give the horses time to rest and perhaps you both would like to explore the town."
After Jelena finished a plate of eggs, toast, a glass of milk and another jelly-filled bun, they went for a walk about town. Jelena couldn't help but notice the stares they were getting from the people they passed by. She began to feel uncomfortable. It reminded her of the streets in Legolas' city.
They turned down one of the side streets and noticed that the buildings were smaller, not quite as tall as the ones on the main road. They saw many hobbits busily working, selling their wares on the sidewalks, pushing carts and wheelbarrows and riding by on ponies. Small hobbit children ran about playing their games. The smile returned to Jelena's face when she saw the dress shop on one side of the street.
She went inside and began looking through the dresses. Most of them were small, made for hobbits. Then she came to a section of dresses obviously made for larger, taller women.
"Can I help you find something?" asked a hobbit-girl coming from the back room.
"I am looking for a new dress," Jelena said. "I am afraid my pregnant belly already starting to outgrow this dress!" she said patting her stomach.
"Let me see…" the girl said, rummaging through the racks. She pulled out a rust colored skirt, a white short-sleeved shirt with puffy sleeves, an olive-green vest and a tan shawl. "The skirt can be adjusted with the ties."
"You should try it on," Glorfindel said.
The girl led Jelena into the back room to try it on. She came back out a short time later. Gimli and Glorfindel smiled at her, she looked the part of a hobbit now. Glorfindel slipped the girl some coins and they were on their way once more. They walked around the town exploring the many shops and sites. By the end of the day, they were tired and went back to the Prancing Pony.
The bar was packed with the locals, coming to find out about the strangers in town. When they walked through the door, everyone was silent and staring until Butterbur broke the silence. "Ah, you are back! You must be hungry. Please, come in and I will have some food brought for you." The people in the bar once again resumed their chatting, glancing at the strangers now and then. Butterbur returned a short time later with three plates. "Please excuse everyone's manners. Like I was saying, we do not get many elves here. We had another elf here a couple of weeks ago, frightening chap. Didn't stay in town long, which suited me fine." Jelena felt a chill run down her spine. She pulled the shawl tighter around her shoulders. "Are you cold, miss? I will stoke the fire for you. I will leave you to eat. Give me a holler if you need anything."
They sat at a small table next to the fire, Jelena was yawning and feeling very sleepy. "I think I am going to turn in." She said goodnight to her friends and Butterbur took a lamp and led her up the stairs to her room. Glorfindel and Gimli stayed behind and tried to chat with some of the men and hobbits in the bar. They found out a bit more of the goings on in the Shire, their concern growing over their travels the next day. Jelena fell quickly asleep and dreamed of happier times with her elf prince.
