Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
"I will join you," said Thranduil. He was sitting upon his horse dressed in his elven armor.
"You should stay here, Father," Legolas said. The last thing he wanted was his father fighting in battle with him. He wanted to stay as far away from him as possible. "The troops and I can handle this."
"That may be but I am still coming," Thranduil said.
Legolas sighed. "As you wish." They rode along the Forest River towards Long Lake.
They had been riding for a few hours when they met up with scouts. "The orcs are almost to the tree line, Sire."
"Take to the trees. We will shoot as many as possible from the safety of the trees. Then we will rush upon them," Thranduil said. Legolas directed the troops on where to position themselves. Some positioned themselves up in the trees while others stood behind them out of site. All were ready with their bows in hand. They waited.
Legolas sat high on a branch with Thranduil. Their sharp eyes watched the horizon for movement. And they waited. Legolas' eyes caught movement from some brush along the river. He saw a handful of orcs, slowly making their way cautiously along the bank. They stopped and called back to those behind them. The orcs crashed through the brush and they ran towards the tree line and the waiting elves. Legolas held his hand up. The elves notched their arrows. The orcs moved closer. Legolas waited. Over one hundred orcs were now running towards them. Closer and closer. Legolas dropped his hand.
Arrows flew from the trees and hit their targets. Orcs were dropping and squirming upon the ground. Another wave of arrows crashed down upon the foul beasts. The elves shot off another wave, bringing down half the orcs before they reached the trees. The elves dropped from the trees on their enemies, taking them out with knives and swords. Legolas dropped down with both knives in hand, stabbing and slashing mercilessly at the evil hoard. Thranduil jumped down and fought back to back with Legolas.
The battle was long and bloody. A few elves were killed and injured. The orcs kept coming. Legolas and Thranduil found themselves surrounded by a dozen of the creatures. Legolas was growing tired. He wasn't fully recovered from being poisoned. He backed himself against a tree swinging his blades. Thranduil's sword connected with several orc skulls when he felt a sharp pain in his shoulder that knocked the air from his lungs. He saw an orc knife shoved into him just below his shoulder blade. The pain was intense but he fought on. Legolas saw the knife in his father and his strength was renewed, swinging his knives in every direction felling the wicked creatures.
When all were dead he sat down against the tree next to Thranduil. "Father, we need to remove the blade from your shoulder." Legolas pulled a clean cloth and a water skin from his pack. He stood in front of Thranduil and grasped the handle of the knife. He pulled it quickly from his shoulder; the blood began to spill rapidly from the wound. Legolas ripped open Thranduil's tunic and poured the water over the wound. He pressed the cloth against it to stop the bleeding. The blood quickly soaked through the cloth.
Thranduil was feeling dizzy from the loss of blood. Legolas called for the healers, a look of concern on his face. He couldn't stop the bleeding. "If I keep bleeding like this," Thranduil said, "you just might become the king yet."
"That is not amusing, Father. I do not wish to be king so you had better stay with us!" Thranduil lost consciousness.

Haldir and Gimli could be heard from a mile away. Jelena got out of bed and went out to the balcony. There were several elves down below watching the two coming down the path towards the garden. "You aggravate me, Dwarf!" Haldir hollered at Gimli.
"You are the most pig-headed, pointy-eared…"
"Enough Dwarf! We are here now so this conversation is over!"
"But we would have been here sooner if you had listened to me!" Gimli spat at Haldir.
"What is wrong with you two?" Lirimaer scolded, running across the garden to break the pair up. "You cannot be left alone together for a moment! Now hush you two!"
Astaldo ran by the three and stuck his nose in the air sniffing. Jelena clapped her hands to get the dog's attention. He looked up, as did everyone else, and Astaldo wagged his tail, running inside. Jelena laughed and went quickly to her door. She opened the door and watched the large dog run down the corridor towards her. Astaldo ran into the room and licked Jelena's face, almost knocking her over. "I missed you too, boy!" He lay down on the floor at her feet and rolled onto his back. Jelena scratched his chest and belly while the dog kicked his feet into the air.
"It looks like someone is very happy to see you," Gimli said from the doorway.
"He probably had enough of hearing your bickering." Haldir grumbled.
"If he is tired of anything, it would be your snide remarks!" Gimli shot back.
"Enough!" Lirimaer shouted, getting a headache from listening to the two arguing. "You are both acting like children!" Gimli and Haldir both gave her a heated look over the comment. Jelena sat on the floor next to Astaldo and laughed at them all.
"How are you feeling today, Jelena?" Lirimaer asked, noting the color in her cheeks.
"Much better!" Jelena said, a broad smile on her face. "I'm glad to see you both made it here safely."
"I see Elrond's medicine has worked well," Haldir said, grinning at Jelena. "It is wonderful to see you smiling again."
"Thank you, Haldir," Jelena said.
"Mae govannen, Haldir and Gimli. I heard that the both of you had arrived," said Elrond from the doorway. "Jelena, do you feel well enough to go to my library? There is an impatient hobbit waiting to talk with you."
"I am feeling much better today, Lord Elrond. Thank you!" Jelena said, heading for the doorway with Astaldo following.
"Vuranor and Alfirin are downstairs as well wanting to see you two," he said to Lirimaer and Haldir.
"Lord Elrond, you have done wonders for the girl. I thought for sure she would not last long with her heart breaking. Thank you for caring for her," Haldir said.
"I did nothing for her, Haldir. Someone else has touched the girl's heart," Lord Elrond said. He smiled and left the room.
"What is he talking about?" Haldir asked Lirimaer.
"Jelena is with child. Legolas' child," she said.
Haldir and Gimli looked at Lirimaer with disbelief. "How did this happen?" Haldir said. Lirimaer looked at him with a cocked eyebrow. "I know how it happened! That is not what I meant. I meant how could Legolas have been so careless? He is much older and wiser than the girl. He should have known better. I am going to wring his neck the next time I see him!"
"No, you will not!" Lirimaer exclaimed. "Jelena does not want him to know!"
"That is foolish! Legolas has the right to know about his child," Haldir said.
"He is to be married, Haldir, to another. Do not make it any harder on him, or Jelena for that matter. Thranduil will not allow Legolas to be with Jelena. And Jelena cannot go back to Eryn Lasgalen. Thranduil will have her locked away." Lirimaer took Haldir's hand. "You know I am right on this, Haldir."
"You may be right but it does not mean I have to like it." Haldir looked down at Gimli, who seemed to be off in his own thoughts. "What are you thinking about, Dwarf?"
"I am thinking that it is up to Jelena on what she wants to do," Gimli said. "All we can do is be there for her if she needs our help and support. The same goes for Legolas. They are our friends but we cannot tell them how to live their lives. They must make their own decisions."
"I think that is the wisest speech I've heard you say yet, Dwarf!" Haldir remarked. Gimli turned a squinted eye at Haldir and kicked him squarely in the shin. Haldir put his hand down on Gimli's head and held him off. "What did I do to deserve that?"
Lirimaer kicked him in his other shin. "You deserved that one as well! Your arrogance can be irritating, Haldir!"
Lirimaer and Gimli walked out of the room leaving Haldir rubbing his shins.
