Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
Legolas was up and ready to go back into the forest. "Where do you think you are going?" Thranduil said.
"I must get back to my duties," Legolas said, grabbing his pack and bow off the bed. "I will be back in a few weeks."
"Stop!" yelled Thranduil. "You need to rest! It has been only a couple of days since you were bitten."
"I cannot stay here, Father! After what you have done to me, you are the last one I want to be around right now. I will be back in time for your wedding." Legolas stormed out of the room.
He was marching out of the gate when Gwaihir the Windlord swooped down in front of him. "Prince Legolas. You are just the one I wanted to see. I bring word from King Aragorn. He said he would be honored to attend your wedding," Gwaihir said.
"My father works quick!" said Legolas. "I was unaware that he was invited already."
"Your father bid me to deliver the message. He knows how close you are with the King. I will be bringing the King and the Queen here in about two weeks time."
Aragorn! Legolas smiled at the thought of seeing Aragorn again. Then another thought came to him. "Gwaihir, can I ask a favor from you? Four of my friends left here several days ago. They are on their way to Rivendell. Could you bring word to Lord Elrond of their arrival? I am worried about the well being of one of them. She had been ill…"
"I have a message for Lord Elrond from his daughter. I will be happy to do this for you as well. I will keep an eye out for the travelers as well."
"Thank you, Gwaihir," Legolas said, bowing to the majestic bird. Gwaihir took off, leaving Legolas thinking about Jelena and where she might be right now.
The sound of shouting brought him out of his reverie. Three riders rode up to Legolas. "Orcs have been spotted coming from the east along the Forest River. There are at least one hundred of them, Prince Legolas."
"Go round up the troops," Legolas said, running to the stables to get a horse. "We must move quickly!"
~*~*~*~
The snows were still deep for the second week in June. Clouds were starting to build on the western side of the mountains. They were heading for the Pass of Caradhras, a dangerous path but the quickest route. The horses had a difficult time with the steep snow-covered paths. The wind was picking up. "We will have to find some shelter soon," Haldir shouted above the blowing wind. "A storm is coming."
They climbed the narrow pass, a shear drop on one side and a vertical wall of rock on the other. The wind continued to blow and the snow fell heavy, blowing into their faces, stinging them. They came to a wide fissure in the wall. Haldir went in first, sword in hand, his eyes adjusting to the darkness inside. It was a small passage that led into the mountain, with room enough for the horses and themselves.
Haldir went back and helped Jelena and Lirimaer into the cave, followed by Astaldo. Then he went back to help Gimli bring the horses inside. They unpacked the horses and tried to make themselves comfortable on the cold rock floor. Lirimaer wrapped a blanket around a half-frozen Jelena. Astaldo laid down beside her, his ears pricked and listening.
Haldir went deeper into the passage to have a llok around. It seemed to go on forever. "There will be no fire tonight," he said. He did not like the passage one bit, but for now they had no choice but to stay. He pulled out the leftover tea he had in a water skin, but it was frozen solid. "I am sorry, Jelena, but you will have to do without it tonight." Jelena only nodded. The effects had worn off of her a while back. Already she felt sick again. All she wanted was sleep. "I will keep watch. Try to get some rest," Haldir said to everyone. As soon as possible I want to move again."

Jelena awoke with a hand over her mouth. It was Gimli. "Shh, do not speak. Just get up quietly and get ready to go." He pointed down the passageway. Jelena heard the scurrying sound. "Goblins!" Gimli said. Jelena crammed the blanket back into her pack and slung it over the saddle. She grabbed Legolas' sword that she had brought with her. Haldir came running silently up the passage. "We must go now!" he whispered. Torchlight could be seen following him.
Lirimaer led the horses out onto the pass. It was still snowing but was slowing down. The storm had dumped another foot onto the already treacherous ledge. She came back with a sword in her hand. "Jelena, Gimli, let's go!" Gimli headed for the passage opening and looked back. Jelena was standing with her feet firm, Astaldo next to her growling.
Haldir could see the goblins coming. There was about a dozen of them, armed with spears and swords. They saw Haldir and screamed and charged up the passage. "Jelena, run!" Haldir yelled, but she would not move. She held her sword high. Lirimaer and Gimli came back and stood beside her, ready to fight. Lirimaer had Haldir's bow notched and ready. She fired off two shots dropping both of her targets. She managed to take out one more before they were upon them.
Haldir came at them, swinging his sword and hitting one in the head. Gimli was next to him, swinging his axe, splitting one open down its middle. One slipped through Haldir and Gimli and headed straight for Jelena. It swung its axe and Jelena ducked, bringing her sword up and into its chest. Another tried to get her from the side but the large grey dog jumped on it, tearing its throat out. Lirimaer got one that was about to spear Gimli. Haldir threw his sword and speared two together that were going after Lirimaer. The last two turned screaming and headed down the passage. Haldir got his bow from Lirimaer and chased them down, taking them out.
"We must go. More will come looking for them," Haldir said. He headed for the entrance, grabbing Jelena on the way. Lirimaer and Gimli led the horses while Haldir led the way carrying Jelena. The snow was too deep for Arod to have Jelena riding him. It was up to Gimli's waist in spots, the wind whipped it into their faces and blinded them. They continued upward, the pass gradually leveled out and then started to twist downward around the mountain.
The snow finally stopped as the sun peeked over the mountain, shining down on the green valley below. Haldir stopped and sat down in the snow, exhausted. Lirimaer and Gimli plopped down next to him. Haldir unwrapped Jelena from his cloak. She stood up; the snow was over her knees. She was desperate to relieve herself. "Excuse me," she said and went to find a place to go. She was having a hard time maneuvering through the snow and broke out in a sweat. She began to feel dizzy and her stomach was cramped. Suddenly she fell over and passed out.
Haldir lay back in the snow and looked up into the blue sky. He started to doze when he was hit in the side of the head with a snowball. He sat up quick and looked over at Gimli. He was stretched out and beginning to snore. Lirimaer was lying on her cloak, trying hard not to smile. Haldir picked up a handful of snow and tossed it at her, hitting her directly in the face. "You are going to get it!!!" she said and pounced on top of him.
"Promises, promises," Haldir said, pulling her down on him and kissed her. His other hand grabbed some more snow and shoved it down the back of her tunic. Lirimaer screamed, making Gimli jump awake. She grabbed two handfuls and mashed them into Haldir's face. He rolled her over onto her back and straddled her chest. He was about to put more snow down the front of her tunic when he saw a shadow fly over them. It was one of the great eagles. He looked around them. "Where is Jelena?"
Haldir was up and running, following her tracks. The eagle soared above his head and came down for a landing a short distance ahead. As Haldir got closer, he could see that it was standing over Jelena, who was lying in the snow. Haldir ran as fast as he could to her side.
