Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
Jelena woke up, with two dark eyes and a long fuzzy snout staring back in her face. The huge grey dog wagged its tail and licked Jelena's nose, making her smile. "You are awake little one," said a booming voice behind her. Jelena rolled over to see a colossal man sitting in a black chair at a large table. Her friends were also sitting at the table but quickly came to her side. The dog lay back down with its head on her legs.
"How do you feel, sweetie?" Lirimaer asked.
Jelena took a deep breath and sighed. "Tired."
"Well, you must come share in the feast," Haldir said, pulling back her blanket and lifting her up. He sat her at the table next to Beorn, who towered over her.
"My name is Beorn. I made you a special drink," Beorn said. "It will make you feel better. It is made from klamath weed and feverfew and sweetened with honey from my hives." 1 Beorn held the bowl to her lips and she sipped the warm liquid. "Drink this a few times a day and you will be feeling better in no time." While Jelena was sleeping, they told him the tale of her life. Beorn sat there, scratching his beard, taking in every word. He felt great compassion for the little elf/hobbit. "Now you must eat. Everything here was grown in my garden."
"I am not very hungry," Jelena said.
"Nonsense! Eat!" Beorn said, shoveling lots of steamed vegetables onto her plate. "How are you going to feel better if you don't eat?" The large grey dog sat down next to Jelena and put its head in her lap and looked at her with large sad eyes. "Even your new friend wants you to eat! Isn't that right, Astaldo?" 2 Jelena patted the dog on the head and smiled, scratching him behind the ear. She picked up her fork and began to eat.
After they ate, they sat around the fire. The sun was low in the west and it would be dark soon. Horses, goats and dogs brought more mattresses for everyone to sleep on. Beorn got up from his chair and stretched. "I bid you all a good night. Do not go outside for it will not be safe. I will be back sometime in the morning. I will leave more of the tea by the fire for you, little lady," he said to Jelena. Then he went out the door.
During the night, they listened to the sounds of scratching on the porch. "My father told me about this," said Gimli. "He said in the morning, there were hundreds of bear tracks all around, tracks in all different sizes, like Beorn was holding a dance with fifty or more of the creatures." A loud scratch was heard on the door. Gimli snuggled down into the mattress.
"As long as we stay inside, I do not think we have anything to fear," Haldir said. "Get some rest, Master Dwarf." Gimli grumbled at Haldir but was soon snoring. Jelena was sleeping soundly with Astaldo watching over her.

Legolas tossed and turned. The healers cleaned up the spider bite in his thigh but the wound was deep. A lot of the poison was coursing through his veins. They mopped his brow with cool water to keep his fever down. They would have to wait and hope that the prince would come out of it soon.
In his sleep he saw her face clearly, her large blue eyes, her pretty smile, her dainty pointed ears and her long curly brown hair. But the dreams turned into nightmares. He dreamed that she was being chased by orcs. She was running calling out to him, but he could not kill then no matter how many arrows he shot in them. He could not stop them. And then the spiders came, spinning their webs. "Jelena!" Legolas cried out in his sleep.
When Legolas woke two days later, he was back in his room. Thranduil was sitting in a chair at his bedside. "Why am I here?" Legolas asked.
"You don't remember? You were bit by a spider," Thranduil said. "How are you feeling?" Legolas was pale. He had lost a bit of weight as well. His eyes had lost all sparkle and were dull. Thranduil was feeling guilty for the way he handled the situation with the halfling. But his mind didn't change about the marriage. Legolas would have to learn to love his bride.
"Empty," Legolas responded.
"Then I will have some food brought to you."
"That is not what I meant, Father."
Thranduil sat on the bed next to his son. "I am sorry for what happened. But that doesn't change my mind about your upcoming wedding. Marry her, Legolas. Give this girl a chance to make you happy."
"I doubt not that she is a lovely girl, Father. But I love another, like the way you loved my mother. What if your father were told you you had to marry someone else?"
Thranduil said nothing. "You need your rest. I will have some food brought to you." Thranduil left his son's room. What would I have done? he thought. But I never would have chosen a halfling! He went back to his chambers to start making the arrangements for the wedding.

The next morning Jelena woke looking a little better. She didn't get sick after eating the night before and had drank more of Beorn's tea before she fell asleep. Astaldo lay next to her on the floor wagging his tail when she woke up. She gave him a scratch under the chin. "Good morning," Gimli said. "Come break fast with us." She sat down at the table. There was fresh bread with butter and honey. Jelena ate a large piece and drank more of the tea. Her friends watched her almost finish another piece. She gave the rest to Astaldo.
"It is good to see you feeling better," Haldir said.
Jelena gave him a slight smile. "I am sure you will be regretting escorting me to Rivendell by the time we get there! I am sorry to be such a burden on you all."
"You are not a burden, Jelena. You are our friend. We are here to help you." Haldir said, putting an arm around her small shoulders.
Jelena started to cry but had a smile on her face. "Thank you, Haldir. I am fortunate to have such wonderful friends!" After they finished eating they packed up their belongings and waited for Beorn to return.
Beorn showed up late in the morning. He had a small bag filled with herbs from his garden. "Steep these in some hot water," he said to Haldir. "These should help keep her mood elevated. There should be enough to get you to Imladris. Elrond will take over from there."
Haldir put his hand over his heart and bowed to the giant. "Thank you for your hospitality, Beorn. You have been most generous." They walked out the door and their horses were waiting for them. They saddled them up and Beorn lifted Jelena onto the saddle. "Take care of yourself, Jelena. My door is always open to you if you should ever come back this way."
"Thank you," she said. What reason would I ever have to come back? she thought. She looked down at Astaldo. "Goodbye," she said, smiling and the large dog wagging his tail.
They packed up the horses and said their goodbyes and headed for the gate. Beorn looked down at Astaldo. He was making whimpering noises and had his tail between his legs. "Well, if that is what you want to do, go!" Beorn said. The dog ran off to join the riders.
They made it to the Old Ford and crossed the Great River. That night they camped at the base of the Misty Mountains. They decided that it would be best if they didn't have a fire that night. They did not want to draw the attention of orcs in the mountains. Astaldo slept against Jelena's back and kept her warm. The next day the journey through the mountains would prove to be difficult.

1. Klamath weed - aka St. Johnswort - used to treat depression; feverfew - aka bachelor's buttons - used to treat nausea and depression
2. Astaldo - Quenya for Valiant. I used a Quenya name because I think Beorn is very old and maybe used the older Elven language. Who knows! I'm making it up!!! LOL!~ Next Chapter ~
