Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
Jelena's whole world shattered in an instant. She sat there, shaking, all the color running from her face. She looked around the table at the faces of those around her. Everyone was silent with their mouths hanging open, except for Thranduil, who was smiling.
Legolas stared hard at his father. "What have you done, Father?"
"Lord Celeborn and I both agreed that a royal marriage between our two realms would bring us closer together politically. You will marry Celeborn's cousin. She has agreed to the marriage."
"And what makes you think that I will agree to it? I will not be forced into this marriage to a girl I do not know or love!"
"Then you forfeit on the deal you made with me." Thranduil waved his hand to the guards that were standing in the corner. Two placed themselves behind Gimli and another two behind Jelena.
"Wait!" Legolas shouted, pushing the guards away from Jelena. "Marriage was never part of the deal!" Jelena sat there numb in her chair. She was speechless. Legolas, to be married to another?
"The deal was you were going to take over your duties as prince. Part of those duties is to marry, and marry someone of pure elven blood, not a Halfling."
Jelena stood up. She looked at her friends and at Legolas with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Please, excuse me." She walked stiffly from the table, her knees threatening to buckle from under her. She walked half way to her room before collapsing to the floor in the passageway.
Legolas stood and started after her. Thranduil motioned to the guards to retrieve him. They tried to seize Legolas but he fought them off. "Stop this now, Legolas!" Thranduil said, grabbing his son's arm in mid-swing.
Legolas heard Gimli shouting, "Get your hands off of me!" They bound and gagged him once again. Thranduil motioned for the other guards to go find Jelena.
Legolas was at his wits end. "Wait! Father, please! Do not do this! Do not make me marry someone I do not love! I love Jelena!"
"Legolas, you will do this, or Jelena and the dwarf will never see the light of day again! I told you, follow the deal or I will lock them away. I will not have you involved with a thieving little halfling!"
Legolas didn't know what else to say. It was all too much. He sat down hard on the floor and put his head in his hands. "Why do you do this, Father? Have I been nothing but a disappointment to you? Have I done nothing right in your eyes?" He looked up at Thranduil. "I'm pleading with you, please do not make me do this!"
Thranduil knelt down in front of his son. "Lord Celeborn said she is a lovely girl, with golden hair and bright blue eyes. She comes from the lineage of Galadhon. Her name is Nevdilien. She will make you a wonderful wife."
A chair fell over at the table behind them. Rúmil was standing, glaring at Thranduil and Legolas. He excused himself and stormed out of the room.
Legolas took a deep breath and stood up. "I will never love another, Father. Are we through for the night?" Thranduil nodded. Legolas headed for the doorway.
"Oh, one more thing, Legolas. Do not try to sneak your friends out of Eryn Lasgalen. I will send out search parties to bring their thieving carcasses back if I must. Do as I say, Legolas. You will not win."
Legolas turned and left the room. He headed down the passage towards his room, feeling broken inside. For now, he didn't know what else to do. He needed time to think. How could he possibly marry another?
Then there was Rúmil. He is in love with the girl they arranged to marry him. Legolas' head was pounding. All he wanted to do was go find Jelena. He saw something lying in the passage up ahead. "Jelena!" he yelled, running to her. She was crumpled up in a pile on the floor unconscious. Legolas picked her up and carried her back to her room.
He sat on the bed, holding Jelena in his arms. He brushed the hair from her face. He traced her face with his fingers; her eyes, her nose, her lips, her ears. Tears came to his eyes and he held her tight in his arms. He had to figure out a plan to get Gimli and Jelena out of Eryn Lasgalen. But how?
Jelena moaned and opened her eyes. She looked up at Legolas and saw his tears. She brushed them away with delicate fingers. "I must leave now."
"He said he would hunt you down if you leave now. I will figure out a plan, Jelena."

The next morning Legolas sought out his father. "I need to speak to you. Let Gimli and Jelena leave and I will stay. I… I will marry Nevdilien," Legolas said. He felt like it took all his energy to get the words out. "But hear me now, Father. If you make me do this, I do not know how I will live. You are keeping me away from the one I truly love, and it is breaking my heart."
"What do you see in that creature?" Thranduil sneered "Does she please you in bed? What other reason could there be!"
Legolas slammed his father against the wall. Thranduil's guards had their arrows notched and ready. "Don't ever speak of her like that again! She means everything to me! I would die to protect her, especially from you! Do we have a deal, Father? They can be gone later today with Haldir and Lirimaer. Let them go."
"So be it. They may leave. But if you break your word…"
"I gave you my word, Father. I gave you my word."
"Come, Legolas. Your friends are heading back to Lórien now." They went to the gate to say farewell to Orophin and Rúmil. Haldir and Lirimaer were there as well.
"Please tell Lord Celeborn that the wedding will commence in three months." Said Thranduil to Orophin. Legolas glanced over at Rúmil. Rúmil returned a stern look. Legolas was not the only one in pain now. All he could do was nod to Rúmil and Orophin, for nothing came to him on what to say. They watched the riders leave. Haldir and Lirimaer went back to their room to pack. Legolas left his father to help Jelena get ready for her journey.
"You must leave today with Haldir and Lirimaer. They will take you to Rivendell. From there Gimli will lead you to the Shire."
Jelena's stomach was in knots. She felt like throwing up. She stared at Legolas, trying to take in every angle of his face to memory. She knew she would never see him again. She felt like dying.
They folded her dresses and Legolas gave her a pack to put them in. "I never got the chance to give you this," he said, handing her the bow he had carved. It was strung with a string made from his hair. Jelena broke down; Legolas pulled her into his arms. He held her tight, never wanting to let her go. "I will always remember you, Jelena. All I want is for you to be safe and to live a happy life. I know you will find it in the Shire."
There was a knock at the door. "Everyone is ready to go now," Gimli said.
Legolas carried her pack and walked them to the gate. Arod was there, all saddled up. Legolas attached Jelena's pack to the saddle and helped Gimli up. "Farewell, my friend. Please take care of Jelena and see her safe passage to the Shire."
"I will do that, Legolas," Gimli said. "You have my word. Goodbye my friend. May our paths cross again someday."
"Haldir, Lirimaer, safe journey to you both," Legolas said hugging Lirimaer and nodding to Haldir.
"He turned to Jelena and held her tight. Tears streamed from their eyes. "I love you, Jelena!" Legolas said, lifting her up and putting her behind Gimli.
"And I love you, Legolas!" Jelena cried. Legolas smacked Arod on the rump, sending the horse off. They trotted off, Jelena holding Legolas' gaze until she couldn't see him anymore. Legolas stood firm until they were out of site. Then he crumpled to the ground and cried.
