Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

Jelena dreamed about Legolas. It was a strange dream because she could not see him, but she knew he was there. She could feel the warmth of him against her cold skin. His scent assailed her senses. He was stroking her head and rocking her in his arms calling to her…Jelena…Jelena…

She could see light again, blinding her. Someone had opened the door to her cell and she hadn't heard it. She was so weak and cold from lying on the floor that she couldn't move. She felt warmth and strong arms surrounding her. Someone was carrying her and moving fast calling her name. She snuggled against them and smelled a familiar scent. She smiled and fell into unconsciousness once more.

"Jelena. Jelena, please wake up!!!" Jelena opened her eyes to find Haldir, Lirimaer and Gimli at her bedside. She tried to speak but nothing would come out. Her friends looked very worried. "Jelena?" Lirimaer said. Jelena tried again to talk but just a hiss came out. Lirimaer held a bowl to her lips and poured warm broth into her mouth. "Sip this. It will help you recover your strength." Jelena looked around the room. Legolas wasn't there. She had been dreaming. "He has come back, Jelena. Legolas is back! Now drink some more. He will be here soon. He had to take care of some things first." Gimli snickered along with Haldir.

"You son of an orc!" Legolas screamed at Maeldir. He had him pinned against the wall with his knives. "Tell me why I shouldn't run you through!"

"I was following your father's orders!"

"My father said nothing about starving Jelena! You are the one who stole the jewels, admit it!!"

"I will admit nothing! Why do you care so much about a Dwarf and a Halfling? You are an Elf. They are simple mortals. You are immortal!" Maeldir said.

"Let us see how immortal you are!" Legolas pressed the razor sharp tip of his knife against Maeldir's chest. It went through the material of his tunic and cut into his skin. He held Maeldir's eyes with his fiery gaze. Thranduil's hand pulled back Legolas' arm.

"Do not do this, Legolas. Do not have this worm's blood on your hands," he said, lowering Legolas' arm down. Thranduil looked over to Maeldir. "You are banished from Eryn Lasgalen and never return. Now leave my sight before I change my mind and let Legolas finish you! Or perhaps I'll finish you myself!" Maeldir ran down the passage and disappeared. Thranduil turned back to his son. "We have a deal my son. I released your friends and took care of Maeldir."

"You call that 'taking care' of him? After what he did to Jelena and Gimli! Jelena is barely alive! I was told that Maeldir tried to molest her! He deserves to be put in a cell without food and…"

"Enough! It is done! He will bother them no more. Now you must keep to your end of the bargain. You are to pick up your duties as prince and start acting like one. Far too long you ran around Middle-earth and ignored your own realm. You are now in charge of my troops and will lead them in removing any remaining evil from Eryn Lasgalen. You will also have more responsibility around the Halls and with the people of this realm." Legolas was extremely agitated. He wanted to get back to Jelena and make sure she was all right. He wanted to be there when she woke up. "Legolas! Do we have a deal? Or should I put your thieving friends back in their cells?"

"Father, you know as well as I do that they did not steal from you! I know Maeldir was behind this!"

"The facts are that Gimli and Jelena were found in possession of the stolen property," Thranduil said. "Gimli, your 'friend', had your mithril crown. Dwarves are thieves. Shall I have them taken back to their cells or do we have a deal?"

Legolas knew he was beat. "Yes, Father, we have a deal."

Jelena finished the broth and fell back to sleep. She awoke the next day in her soft bed, wrapped in the arms she had dearly missed. "Good morning, Jelena." Legolas smiled at her, but Jelena could see the concern in his eyes. She looked terrible. Worse than when he had first found her. It would take her a long time to get healthy again. He wished now that he had finished off Maeldir, slowly, to make him suffer for what he had done to her. If he ever saw him again he would make him pay for his crime.

She was still terribly weak but managed to lift her hand to his cheek. "I'm glad you're back." She closed her eyes and snuggled into him. "I missed you."

"I am sorry for everything that happened, Jelena. Maeldir will bother you no more. He has been removed from Eryn Lasgalen. Do you feel up to eating? You need to get back your strength." Legolas helped her to sit up and helped her to eat.

Legolas talked to her and she listened, nibbling on her food. She was soon falling asleep again. "Rest Jelena," Legolas said, tucking her into bed. "I will be back this evening to feed you your dinner. I have things I must take care of." He kissed her but she was already asleep.

She stayed in bed for a few days; Legolas had insisted. She had a few visitors: Haldir, Lirimaer and Gimli came every day and several times a day to keep her company, but she also had a surprise visit from her grandfather, Berendil. He arrived with Dornion on the second day after her release from the prison. They sat and he talked about her father, what he was like as a child, how he was the King's guard and the many battles he had fought in.

Jelena in turn told her grandfather about the father she knew, how he took care of the other captives, how he was a great healer, and most important, a loving father. She also told Berendil that he reminded her of her father, kind and with the same sparkle in his eye. This made her grandfather smile and he got up and hugged Jelena. He asked if he could come visit her again, which Jelena agreed to eagerly. He also made mention of his wife, Giliathien. He said he was proud of the way he stood up to her grandmother and apologized for her behavior.

Jelena was looking exhausted so her grandfather and uncle made their leave. They passed Legolas on the way, nodding to each other. Legolas had a smile on his face when he entered the room. "So I see you had some special visitors." He saw the weariness on Jelena's face and was concerned. He sat down on the bed next to her and offered her a drink. "How are you feeling?"

"I am tired, that's all," she said, giving him a small smile. "What have you been up to all day? I've missed you."

"I am sorry. I have a lot of things to take care of around here for my father."

"You have been doing a lot for him lately. Do you have a change of heart for your father?"

"No! It's just…" Legolas sighed.

Jelena could tell something was bothering him. She grasped his hand in hers. "What is it?"

"To get you and Gimli released I had to make a promise to my father that I would take over some of the responsibilities around Eryn Lasgalen. He has put me in charge of his troops. We are cleaning out the forest of spiders and orcs."

"Well, that doesn't sound too bad," Jelena said. "You are a great warrior."

Legolas shot her a look. "Not too bad? I, too, am now a captive in my father's kingdom! I am unable to go out and explore other realms and meet new peoples. I must stay here and play the princely role. If I do not, my father will have you both back in a cell."

Jelena realized what it that meant. Legolas was giving up everything for her and Gimli. She would not allow Legolas to do these things for her. "I am sorry, Legolas. As soon as I am well, I will leave for Hobbiton. I will ask Gimli to be my guide. After we are gone, you will have nothing holding you to your promise in Eryn Lasgalen."

Legolas put his arms around Jelena. He did not want her to go. But even though she was out of the cell, she, too, was still a prisoner in the Elvenking Halls as long as she stayed. "I will lead you there if you wish to go," Legolas said sadly.

"I do not wish to leave you, Legolas, but I will not have you do these things because of me, because of us," Jelena said. "I am sure that Gimli will agree with me on this." Jelena was trying hard to hold back her tears.

Legolas held her in front of him, looking into her eyes. "Do not mention your leaving in front of anyone. I do not want my father to find out. He knows that once you are gone, there will be nothing here to hold me. Now get some rest," he said, kissing her on the cheek. Legolas could feel his heart already beginning to break. "I will let you know when it will be safe for us to go."
