Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

"You stole from me!!! After I take you in as guests in my house and you steal from me!" Thranduil shouted. Jelena and Gimli fought their captors. They were still tied and gagged and could not speak in their defense. "This is why I do not welcome strangers. Well, I welcome you now, to my prison cells! Take them away and lock them up!"

They were placed in separate cells and untied. The doors were closed behind them and they were left in darkness. Jelena sat down on the floor. What had just happened? she thought. She could see a crack of light coming from underneath the door. She crawled to the door and yelled, "Gimli!" She heard nothing in return. Jelena wondered where Legolas was about now. Four more days before he would be back, an eternity it would be to her in the dark cell.

Hours later the door opened. It was Maeldir. "Well, it looks like you have yourself in a fine predicament. Maybe you should have been a little nicer to me." He had a plate of food and some water. "Perhaps if you can be nice now, you will get to eat." He put the food down on the bench that was against one wall and moved towards her.

"Stay away from me you fiend! I will never be 'nice' to you!"

"You might find it quite pleasant," he said, cupping his hand under her chin. His other hand reached behind her and cupped her backside, pulling her to him. He held her tight and tried to kiss her. Jelena bit down hard on his lower lip, tasting blood. Maeldir smacked her hard, knocking her to the ground. "You will pay for that! See how you like starvation for a while!" He knocked her plate and cup to the ground, spilling their contents. Jelena caught the cup before all the water was lost. Maeldir slammed the door behind him.

Jelena heard Maeldir giving orders to the guard to let no one open her cell but him. She could feel her throbbing cheek swelling where he had hit her. She took a sip of the water that was left. She knew she would have to make it last. It would be a long time before anyone would come back. She hoped that Legolas would return soon.

Legolas had picked up a piece of Birchwood and had begun to carve a bow for Jelena during his long nights by himself. He didn't sleep much, his mind wandering back to Eryn Lasgalen and to Jelena. He thought it would make a nice gift for her and it was small enough for her to learn to shoot on.

Legolas left Galadriel and Celeborn's company shortly before dusk. He left them at Dol Guldur where he had first met with them many days ago. Now he raced to get home. But during his journey with the Lord and Lady, he couldn't help but feel tension coming from Lord Celeborn towards him. Legolas would try to make eye contact with him but Celeborn would look away. He was holding something back from Legolas, but what he didn't know.

He rode Arod hard, only stopping for a few hours each night. When he was two days' ride away from the Elvenking Halls, he came upon a group of orcs. They had a fire burning, about fifteen orcs in total. Legolas rode up quietly and let his arrows fly. He rode around the camp to confuse them, out of reach the firelight, taking them out.

Arod unexpectedly bolted. He took off through the trees and Legolas knew the horse had been hit. He got Arod calmed down and found an orc arrow in the horse's hindquarter behind the saddle. Legolas quickly pulled it out. It wasn't deep but it had a poison tip. He washed the wound with athelas water. They would ride no more that night. Legolas kept an eye out for any orcs tracking them but none came.

Arod was lame and sick the next day. They both would have to walk the remaining distance to the Halls, adding at least another day to the trip. Legolas was in a hurry but would not leave his friend to the foul creatures of the forest. Arod had gotten him through a lot of tight spots over the past few months. He found some feverfew and white willow bark for Arod to help ease the horse's pain.

Jelena lost track of time in the darkness. It felt like she had been in there for weeks. Once in a while she would hear noises from outside. She heard Gimli hollering at the guards and was thankful that he was all right. She also heard and felt things slithering around on the walls and the floor. She tried to sleep most of the time so she wouldn't think about her hunger and thirst. It also kept her sane in her dark solitude. When she slept she dreamed of happier times with her father and her new friends. And the night she spent with Legolas.

Jelena heard the door open but was too weak to move. "And how are we feeling after four days of darkness?" He grabbed her by her hair, lifted her head and looked into her half-closed eyes. "Bring me some water, now!" He patted Jelena's cheeks to try to bring her around. She tried to focus her eyes but the light was too bright. He tilted her head back and poured water into her mouth, choking her. "We don't want you dying now, do we? Drink." She gulped down the water as fast as she could.

"Legolas won't be happy with the way you've treated me," she managed to croak out between gulps.

"I personally do not care. I do not work for him. Thranduil is the one who ordered you to be imprisoned. He is the one I answer to." He let go of her hair, letting her fall to the ground.

"And is Thranduil aware of my treatment? Did he tell you to put the jewelry in Gimli's room?"

"He told me to do as I see fit. And no, I did that on my own. The dwarf needed to be out of the way for a while. And what better place than in a cell where I know where he is. Any time you wish to change your mind and show me some respect," he said, reaching down and caressing his hand across the cheek he had previously bruised, "you will be able to go free." He threw a loaf of bread on the floor next to her and went back to the door. "But for now I think you need some more time alone," Maeldir said, slamming the door shut.

Jelena searched the floor for the bread and crammed some into her mouth. She managed to swallow before her tears overtook her. Where is Legolas? she thought and cried herself to sleep.

"I have told you, over and over, Gimli was with me! He couldn't have stolen your jewels!" Haldir fumed. He had been trying to get a chance to talk with Thranduil for six days but Thranduil would not see him until now. "We had been teaching the girl how to use a sword all day and we returned to our rooms to change for dinner. When could he have possibly been able to do this?"

"They were found in his room," Thranduil said.

"And may I ask who found them?" Haldir questioned.

"One of my guards, Maeldir. He thought the dwarf was acting suspiciously. He searched his room and found them under his bed."

"Of course he would think he was acting strange! Gimli is a dwarf and most elves do not trust dwarves." Haldir took a deep breath to calm down. "But what about the girl, Jelena? What has she done?"

"Maeldir said that she had helped the dwarf."

"And what proof do you have of this?" Haldir asked.

"Proof of what? Where is Jelena?" Legolas had returned.
