Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
By mid-morning Jelena finally felt good enough to get out of bed. She went into Legolas' room and got a robe out of his dressing closet. She went to the baths in hopes that it would revive her. She held the sleeve of the robe to her nose. It smelled strongly of Legolas.
The water was refreshing. She immersed herself totally under and wrung out her hair. "Well, hello Jelena." It was Maeldir.
"Do you always spy on women when they are bathing? What do you want?" She wrapped her arms about herself for cover and to control her shaking. She did not like the looks of this elf. Something about him scared her.
"I came to check on you, to see if there was anything I could do for you, anything that you needed, now that the Prince is gone," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"I want nothing from you except some privacy. Please leave!"
Maeldir sauntered over to the bench. He picked up Legolas' robe, held it up, and then dropped it on the ground. He sat down on the bench with his foot on the robe. "Now you are not being very polite are you?" He began to remove a boot. "You need to learn how to treat others with respect." Jelena started to back up to get as far from him as possible. Maeldir removed the first boot and went to work on the other.
"I do not have respect for snakes!" Jelena spat, ready to scream. "What do you think you are doing?"
"Hmmm. The water looks wonderful, as does the company. I thought I'd take a dip." He began to unbutton his tunic.
"Is there a problem here, lass?" Gimli asked from the archway, his axe in hand.
"There is no problem. Why don't you run along, Dwarf."
"I'll be running my axe down your spine if you step one foot in that water, Elf!" Gimli lifted his axe and smacked the handle down in his other hand. "Now, how about some privacy for the lady. You can bathe when she is done."
Maeldir was unarmed and very much a coward. He picked up his boots and bowed to Jelena. "My lady." He turned and gave Gimli a wide berth and went into the passage.
"From now on, get me before you come to take a bath! I will stand in the archway and guard. In fact, get me if you have to go anywhere. I don't trust that elf one bit!"
Jelena quickly finished her bath and picked up the robe. "Thank you, Gimli. I hate to think of what might have happened if you didn't come along."
"Legolas spoke to me before they all left this morning. He told me to keep an eye on you. Unfortunately I didn't hear you leave your room. We need to stick together for the next few days. A single dwarf with all these elves. Arg!" Gimli chuckled and led Jelena back towards her room. They rounded the corner and almost ran right into Haldir and Lirimaer. They both looked a bit run down after last night.
"Good morning!" Jelena said. "I thought you went back to Lórien today."
"We decided to stay and explore Eryn Lasgalen some more," Lirimaer said. "The Lord and Lady gave Haldir some leave time from his duties."
Haldir was looking a little green. "Are you all right?" asked Jelena.
"I will be fine. I am not used to being under ground. Makes my head hurt."
"Oh please!" Lirimaer laughed, making Haldir cringe. "Your head hurts because you drank too much last night!"
"Mine hurts as well," said Gimli, rubbing his head. "But it isn't from the wine!"
"Look here, Dwarf! I said I was sorry! What more do you want from me?"
"Boys!" yelled Jelena. "Let's be civil. I don't think anyone is feeling too good today. Perhaps a walk outside will help."
"That is just where we were heading. We will wait for you to get dressed," Lirimaer said.

The four walked down the middle of the road side by side: Gimli, Jelena, Lirimaer and Haldir. They walked by many curious elves, oblivious of the stares they were receiving. They came upon Jelena's grandparents' home, and Jelena stopped. She stood staring at the door.
"What is going on?" whispered Lirimaer to Haldir. Haldir shrugged his shoulders. "Jelena, are you all right?"
Jelena went up to the door and knocked hard and loud. An elf she assumed was her grandfather answered the door. "Hello," she said, "I am Jelena."
The elf smiled and quickly came outside, closing the door behind him. He bowed to her, "Hello Jelena. I am Berendil." He kept looking at the windows nervously. "I am your…" The door opened and there stood the female elf Jelena had seen the day before. It was her grandmother. She grabbed Berendil by the arm and pulled him back.
"Grandmother, I am Jelena."
"I am not your grandmother. Maerdir is dead and he had no children. Come along Berendil!"
"Giliathien, please!" Berendil said.
"Did I do something to offend you, Grandmother? My father spoke so highly of his parents. He told me what a wonderful mother you were to him, sweet and kind. So, I either have the wrong house or my father was delusional from being in the pits of Dol Guldur for so long." She turned to her friends who all stood with their mouths agape. "Let's move on. Grandfather, it was a pleasure to meet you," she said and smiled at Berendil. She stomped off and the others followed.
Lirimaer ran up next to Jelena who was still stomping down the road. "Are you all right sweetie?" She could see that Jelena was crying.
"I will be fine." They walked for a few moments in silence, Gimli and Haldir walking behind them listening. "Is there something wrong with me?" Jelena asked. "What did I do to her? To anyone! Nothing!" Jelena noticed the elves watching them go by. "What are you looking at? Is there a problem?" she yelled, stamping her foot. "Legolas said he is taking me to Hobbiton. It won't be soon enough!" she said. "I want to go back to my room now!"

The troops were moving at a swift pace. Legolas figured they wanted to get back to their own homes. It was just what he had in mind. He rode with Celeborn and Galadriel in silence.
"So what is troubling you, Legolas?" Galadriel asked. "You have hardly said a word since we left."
"I am worried about Jelena. My people are rude to her. And there is someone there that I do not trust. I am beginning to wonder if I did wrong by leaving her behind."
"She is in good hands. She has the protection of Haldir and Gimli. And I cannot forget about Lirimaer! She proved herself quite a warrior at Helm's Deep," Galadriel said smiling.
"She did at that!" Legolas said.
"You really care a lot for Jelena. She is very fortunate to have your heart." Galadriel patted Legolas on the arm. Celeborn rode in silence.

While Legolas was away, Haldir, Lirimaer and Gimli kept Jelena entertained by teaching her how to use a sword. Jelena raided Legolas' weapon collection in his room. She found a small, light sword that she could easily handle. She also found thick leather gloves for the person she was practicing with. Mainly they practiced outside; they were always glad for the fresh air and sunshine. If it rained they stayed inside, moving a few of the tables around in the Great Hall to make room.
Maeldir was often seen lurking about, but a look from Gimli or Haldir sent him on his way. He had to figure out a way to get Jelena alone, but someone else was always with her. He wanted to teach her a lesson in manners. The fact that the halfling and the dwarf had bested him infuriated him. He wanted the dwarf out of the way.
Legolas had been gone for six days. Jelena kept to her word about going nowhere without one of her friends. She went across the hall to Gimli's room and heard shouting coming from inside. She opened the door and found Gimli being held by several elves and Maeldir was there as well. On the bed lay ornate pieces of jewelry and other items, all made of gold and another form of metal Jelena never saw before. "What is going on?" Jelena shouted. "Ah, here is his accomplice, take her as well," Maeldir said. He had an evil smile on his face. Two elves grabbed Jelena and tied a length of rope around her wrists. She kicked and screamed so they put a gag in her mouth to quiet her down. She watched helplessly while they did the same to Gimli. Maeldir scooped up the jewelry and put it in a sack. They dragged the captives to Thranduil's Hall to stand before the king.
