Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

Jelena slowly opened her eyes. Legolas was holding her in his arms, looking down at her and smiling. "Welcome back, Jelena the Brave!" She looked around her: Gimli was next to her and Lirimaer and Haldir were standing by her feet. Legolas helped her to get to her feet. The spider lay in the remains of their tent, its legs curled up underneath it.

She saw the sword lying on the ground and picked it up. She walked over to Haldir and handed it to him. "I am sorry that I used your sword," she said shyly. "It was all I could find at the moment."

"Do not apologize!" he said. "You fought most bravely. How you wielded such a large sword I'll never know. It is almost as long as you are tall!"

"Lirimaer, I thought you were sharing a tent with Jelena?" asked Legolas, smirking. "And Haldir, where were you when everything was going on?"

Haldir and Lirimaer looked at each other and then at Legolas. Lirimaer's face had gone red. "We went for a walk," Haldir said, "and that is all you need to know!" He looked over at the demolished tent. "I suppose we will all be sharing a tent now." He picked up a ripped piece from the tent and wiped the gore from his sword. Haldir looked at Jelena, smiling, and put his hand on her shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Legolas, why don't you take this brave lady down to the water to get cleaned up? I'm sure she would like to get the spider guts off of her. Gimli, would you help me to remove this foul creature from the campsite?"

Lirimaer handed Legolas a cake of soap that smelled of rose petals. Jelena grabbed the tunic that Legolas had lent her from the remains of the tent and followed him to the stream. "Can you teach me how to use a sword?" she asked.

"If you like. I can teach you how to use a bow as well."

"I don't know if I can use one of those! They area whole foot taller than I am!"

"The long bows are the bows of the Galadhrim," said Legolas. "I will teach you with a Mirkwood bow."

"You mean an Eryn Lasgalen bow! It sounds much better than Mirkwood."

"Yes, I suppose it does," said Legolas smiling. Legolas took off his boots and tunic and waded into the stream. The water was icy cold and refreshing. He removed the braids from his hair and washed off his face, arms and hair with the not-so-male-smelling soap. It will have to do, he thought.

Jelena watched Legolas remove his shirt. She couldn't help but admire her new friend's physic. He had a nice build, not overly muscular. She waded into the stream next to him and dipped her head into the chilly water, scrubbing to remove the foul spider slime. It was thick and caked on and difficult to remove.

"Hold still," Legolas said. He lathered up the bar of soap in his hands and rubbed the lather into her hair. He combed his fingers through, removing the clumps of gore. "Put your head down." Legolas rinsed her hair, running his fingers through to make sure it was clean. He handed her the bar of soap. "You will have to take care of the rest yourself!" He turned and left her so she could have her privacy.

Jelena removed the shirt she had been sleeping in and scrubbed it with the soap. Then she scrubbed herself clean, noticing she had received a few scratches from her battle with the spider. There was a long scrape down her left forearm that stung when she washed it with the soap. Now almost frozen from the chilly water, she put on the clean tunic and they walked back to the camp. She was feeling rather dizzy and needed so sleep. "We need to find you a cloak to keep you warm," Legolas said as he wrapped his around Jelena's shoulders. They made their way back to the tent and could hear Gimli snoring already. Haldir and Lirimaer were on one side and Gimli was in the middle. Haldir cursed and gave Gimli a shove. "The dwarf snores so loud he'll draw every orc and spider for miles!" Legolas sat down next to Gimli and Jelena next to him. There was no room to move.

"So when will you start teaching me how to use a sword?" Jelena whispered, followed by a large yawn.

"Well, not tonight! It is very late and we will be moving again come daybreak," Legolas said. "Get some rest. Perhaps when we stop again tomorrow night."

p "Do you mind? Some of us are trying to sleep around here!" grumbled Gimli, raising laughter from everyone in the tent.

They both lay down and tried to get comfortable under the crowded conditions. Jelena fell asleep almost immediately. Legolas was awake for a long time thinking, and listening to Gimli's snores, nudging him every now and then. He looked at Jelena's sleeping form in the dark. He wondered what kind of a future she could have in Eryn Lasgalen. He remembered Haldir's words from the night before. 'She likely will not receive a warm welcome.' Legolas knew this to be true. He knew how his people responded to strangers, especially his father. Jelena had a hard road ahead of her.

Jelena moaned in her sleep. Legolas looked into her partially open blue eyes. So innocent, he thought. Jelena rolled over, flinging an arm and a leg over Legolas and rested her head against his chest. He smiled and wrapped his arms about her, finally falling into a light sleep.

"Let's go you two," said Haldir, kicking at Legolas' foot, giving him a sly smile and raising an eyebrow. "Time to get moving."

Legolas still had his arms wrapped around a sleeping Jelena. He brushed the hair from her face. "Jelena, wake up. We must get going." She moaned and snuggled closer to him.

Gimli grumbled awake. "The sun hasn't risen yet! I hardly slept a wink!" He sat up and pulled on his boots. "How much further till we reach the Elvenking Halls?"

p "We have another five days ahead of us," whispered Legolas, trying not to wake Jelena.

"No sense in whispering, here comes Mr. Arrogance again!" Gimli remarked.

Haldir gave a cold look to the dwarf. "Legolas, we must hurry. Most of the camp has been packed up already."

"Alright, Haldir. Jelena, you must get up now." He rolled her onto her back and noticed she was pale. He put a hand to her cheek and she felt cold. "Jelena?"

Jelena moaned, her eyes trying hard to focus. "I don't feel so good," she said, falling back to sleep.

"Jelena, please wake up!" Legolas said, taking her by the hands and pulling her upright. He saw a nasty scratch on her arm that was oozing and looked infected.

Legolas looked up at Haldir. "She was bitten by the spider. We need to find some clay and some fresh athelas to draw out the poison. I'm afraid she has absorbed most of it. She will sleep for most of the day."

Haldir set out with Gimli and Lirimaer to search for clay and athelas. They came back shortly with the ingredients and finished packing up the camp. Legolas washed the wound and applied the clay and athelas poultice and wrapped it tight. He had Gimli get on Arod and sandwiched Jelena between them. They would all need to ride to catch up with the troops.

It was early afternoon when Jelena showed signs of waking. She began to move around and Legolas held her tight to keep her from falling off. Jelena opened her eyes fully and looked around. She was sitting behind Gimli and she felt someone holding her. She recognized Legolas by his woodsy smell. "What happened?" she asked.

"You received a minor bite from the spider you fought last night. You have been asleep most of the day. You will feel better by tomorrow." He handed her a flask of water that she took eagerly. He gave a piece of lembas. "This will have to do until we stop again for the night."

"How is your patient doing, Legolas?" Galadriel said, riding up behind them.

"I am fine," Jelena said.

"I heard you had quite an exciting night! Celeborn and I were in conference with our guardians when the attack took place. I am happy to see that you are well." Galadriel smiled at Legolas. "Keep up the good work!"

They rode for a couple of hours before stopping to set up camp. "You are going right to bed," Legolas said to Jelena, "just as soon as the tent is up. I will bring you something to eat in a while." He set her down on a log while Haldir, Gimli and himself quickly set up the tent and unrolled the bedrolls. Legolas then picked up Jelena and carried her into the tent. He unwrapped the bandages from her arm and broke away the dried clay. "Perhaps tomorrow we can get in some sword practice. Tonight you rest." He turned to leave when Jelena grabbed his arm.

"I want to thank you for everything you have done for me," she said. "I was a total stranger to you a few days ago but you were kind and took care of me. You are a true friend and I hope to be able to repay you some day."

"Friends do not need to repay friends," Legolas said, caressing her cheek. "Friends help each other when they are in need."

"Well then, the next time you are in need, I hope I am around to help!" she said. She put her head down and fell asleep, the rest of the night thankfully uneventful.
