Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
The next morning the camp was packed up and ready to move shortly after sunrise. Legolas gave Arod some cool water and saddled him with their belongings. He helped Jelena into the saddle and swung up behind her. Gimli refused to ride.
There were several hundred Lórien elves. They rode in the middle of the troops for safety. Galadriel and Celeborn rode with them as well as Haldir and Lirimaer. They chatted about the festivities that were to go on at the Elvenking Halls once they arrived. Jelena just listened, feeling safe and secure in the Prince's arms.
"How are you doing," Legolas whispered down to her.
"I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. So much has happened during the past few days. My whole life has changed," Jelena said, a touch of sadness in her voice.
"Everything will be fine. I will be here for you," he said, giving her a little squeeze that made her smile. Galadriel had watched the small display of affection between Jelena and Legolas and smiled. Legolas had a good heart. He would take care of this girl.
The morning air was still quite chilly. Jelena pressed herself against Legolas' chest and pulled his cloak around her too. She felt Legolas take in a deep breath and he tightened his grip around her waist. Suddenly Arod bolted into a gallop, the elves around them parting the way. Legolas weaved Arod between the trees and pulled him to a halt.
There before them were the burned remains of a large part of the forest. Smoke still rose in places where coals were still hot. Everything was black. The others rode up behind them with Gimli huffing and puffing trying to catch up.
Legolas could say nothing; the look on his face spoke for him. His forest was burned to the ground. Galadriel rode up next to him and placed a comforting hand on his arm. "It will grow again, Legolas."
"I should have stayed and helped defend my father's realm," said Legolas. "I was needed here."
"You were needed by the Fellowship. I cannot imagine how things would have turned out if you were not on that path." Galadriel cupped Legolas' chin with her hand and turned him to face her. "You and the Fellowship saved Middle Earth from a great evil. You could have done nothing more great than that. Your father and Lord Celeborn have renamed Mirkwood 'Eryn Lasgalen.' With time this will be the beautiful forest it once was. Come, we have a long journey ahead of us. Let us move on."
>From behind they could hear Gimli gasping for breath, having finally caught up to them. Galadriel and Legolas smiled at each other, hearing Gimli's curses. "Gimli," Galadriel said, smiling down at the out-of-breath Dwarf. "Would you please ride with me? We haven't had much time to talk. I would love for you to tell me of your adventures with the Fellowship."
Gimli's face lit up. "It would be a great honor to ride with you, my Lady!" Legolas dismounted and helped his friend onto the horse, behind the Lady of Light.
They rode for several leagues that day, stopping occasionally for the elves on foot and the horses to rest. They went through several burnt areas of the forest, Legolas frowning and getting silent each time. They passed by a few woodmen that were happy to see the elves cleaning out the former Mirkwood. Occasionally they came across small bands of orcs that were wiped out immediately. Most of the day Jelena and Legolas rode in silence.
Just before sunset they stopped and set up camp. Scouting parties were sent out in search of fresh food and water. Legolas, Haldir and Gimli set up the tents for themselves and the Lord and Lady while Lirimaer and Jelena gathered small branches for a fire.
When all was done, Galadriel took Jelena to her tent. The seamstress had finished altering the gown and had begun working on a new one for her. When she put it on it fit almost perfectly. The seamstress left a little room for her to fill out as she regained her health. It was a beautiful rose color with golden trim. "You look lovely, my dear. Now let's go back and get you something to eat. You need to fill out that dress!" Galadriel said, smiling at the girl.
They enjoyed a dinner of fresh venison and Lórien wine. Lirimaer and Galadriel worked with Jelena to teach her the proper way for a lady to eat. "Try not to cram the food into your mouth dear," Lirimaer whispered to her. "There is plenty to go around. We will see to it that you do not go hungry."
Jelena had four platefuls before her hunger was satisfied. "She has the appetite of a hobbit," Gimli remarked to Legolas.
"I don't think the poor girl has ever had a proper meal," said Legolas. He noticed she was looking better each day with the good food and care she was receiving. Her large blue eyes were no longer ringed in darkness and her cheeks were filling out a bit. She caught him looking at her and gave him a sweet smile that Legolas returned. She has potential of being a beautiful girl, thought Legolas.
When everyone was finished, Legolas volunteered to take the plates to be washed. Jelena followed him to a nearby stream and helped with the cleaning. "I just wanted to say I am really sorry about your forest being burned," she said. "I know what it is like to have your home destroyed."
~*~*~*~
Legolas looked sadly over at Jelena. "Mine is nothing compared to your loss. You have lost much in the past few days. Your whole life as you knew it is gone and yet you carry on. You are very strong in here," he said, pointing to her heart. "You are much like your father. He was a good elf." He saw tears begin to well up in her eyes and pulled her to him, holding her tight.
The mention of her father made her cry. Legolas held her until her crying eased. She always felt safe when she was around him. "I'm glad that you found me," Jelena said. "Only the Valar know what could have become of me if you didn't."
"You forget," he said, smiling. "You ran into our camp! Perhaps we found each other." Jelena let out a big yawn. It was getting late. Legolas took her hand. "Come. It is time to get some rest. Tomorrow will be another long day."
~*~*~*~
Jelena awoke to elves yelling all around her tent. It was dark and hard to make things out. "Lirimaer?" She was alone. She heard scraping noises down the side of the tent. Suddenly the tent was being ripped open, revealing a rather large spider trying to make its way in. Jelena crawled into the furthest corner, her hands searching for anything to defend herself with.
She felt the cold metal of a sword. She picked it up and held it in front of her. It was very heavy and hard for her to handle. The spider advanced on her, ready to pounce. It reached out a hairy leg and brushed her arm. Jelena thrust the sword forward and up.
~*~*~*~
Legolas and Gimli were by the fire when they heard the shouts. Legolas quickly picked up his bow and notched an arrow. Gimli grabbed his axe. Spiders were crawling into the camp from all directions, as well as from the treetops. He shot off three arrows, killing a spider with each shot. He retrieved the arrows from the foul creatures and shot them into three up in the trees. He turned to see a very large spider crawling through a hole in Jelena's tent. His heart sank. "Jelena!" he cried, running full force with his Elven knives drawn.
The remains of the tent collapsed. He saw the spider pounce. He quickly raced up to the spider with his knives poised when he noticed it wasn't moving. He pushed on the spider, trying to get it off of Jelena's motionless body. Gimli arrived and the two rolled it over, only to find Jelena holding Haldir's sword, pointing up, covered in spider gore. She stood up and looked at the huge, hairy creature, then looked at the gore-covered sword in her hands. She smiled at Legolas and Gimli, dropped the sword and fainted.
