Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.
Jelena awoke in darkness. She was lying on something soft and had warm covers on her. The air smelled faintly of lavender, leaves and earth.
"You are awake," a female voice said in the darkness, making Jelena jump. "Please, do not be afraid. I am a friend of Legolas'. My name is Lirimaer. You are quite safe."
"Where am I?" asked Jelena. "Where are Legolas and Gimli?"
"You are at the Lórien campsite just outside of what is left of Dol Guldur." Lirimaer could sense the unease of Jelena. "Do not worry. All of the orcs are dead or have fled. You are quite safe here, Jelena. Legolas and Gimli are with my husband, Haldir. You must be hungry. I have some food here for you."
Lirimaer lit a candle next to the bedroll Jelena was lying on. Jelena looked at the beautiful elf next to her. She had chestnut colored hair and green eyes with a warm smile on her face. She helped Jelena to sit up and handed her a plate. Jelena crammed the food into her mouth. Lirimaer watched her, feeling sorry for the girl. Jelena was painfully thin, her bones sticking out and her face was sunken in.
"Eat slowly or you will be sick! There is plenty of food here. We will have to get some meat on your bones during our journey to the Elvenking Halls," said Lirimaer, smiling.
"We will be traveling with you?" Jelena asked, her mouth packed with food.
"It is a dangerous journey. It is safer to travel in numbers. Lord Thranduil and his troops are already on their way home. It will take us a few days to get there. In the meantime, we need to find some clothes for you to wear. I hear you have family in Mirkwood?"
"Legolas said my father's parents are there. I can't wait to meet them!"
"I'm sure they will be glad to meet you," said Lirimaer, putting on a pretend smile for the girl. She had been through enough without knowing right now that the Mirkwood Elves might not accept her.

"Did you come across any other prisoners?" asked Gimli.
"All we found were dead and a few that were dying," said Haldir. "This girl, Jelena, she is lucky to be alive. Only the Valar know how she got away. Do you think it wise to bring her to Mirkwood? She likely will not receive a warm welcome."
"Where else is she to go?" said Legolas.
"She is half hobbit," said Haldir. "Perhaps they will take her in with open arms."
"Perhaps," said Legolas. "But how will she get there? She will need a guide. She will have to come with us in the meantime. We cannot just leave her behind."
"So this is where you've been hiding!" said Lirimaer. "Legolas, Jelena is awake and is asking for you and Gimli. I left her to bathe and get dressed. That poor girl. She has been though Orodruin and back!"
"But I have a feeling that hard times for her have only just begun," said Haldir.
They all turned to the sound of crackling twigs nearby. There stood Jelena, wearing one of Lirimaer's gowns. The sleeves were rolled up and the skirt was pulled up at the waist and tucked into a belt to keep from tripping on it. It hung from her body but was much better than what she had on previously. Her hair was clean and shining, curls cascading down to the middle of her back. She had some color in her cheeks and here eyes didn't look quite so dark. She gave a cautious look at the tall muscular elf standing next to Legolas. She walked quickly over to Legolas, giving him a smile.
"Jelena, this is Haldir, Lirimaer's husband," said Legolas. Haldir put his hand to his chest and bowed slightly. Jelena gave Haldir a nod, moving closer to Legolas. She reached up and took his hand, squeezing it tight. Legolas could feel her trembling. "It's all right Jelena. You are amongst friends here. How do you feel after your long rest?"
"Much better now," she said shyly, not taking her eyes off of Haldir. He made her very nervous, his eyes piercing her, studying her. He smiled at her, easing her tension somewhat.
"Don't let Haldir bother you," Gimli whispered to Jelena, rather loudly. "He was known as the Arrogant Elf before he found his lovely bride. Come to think of it, he's still quite arrogant!" Everyone snickered at the comment, except for Haldir. His gaze bore into the dwarf who stood up tall to the elf, returning his gaze.
Legolas felt Jelena's grip on his hand tighten. He looked down at her and saw her looking at something, her mouth hanging open in dismay. He looked and saw two beings gliding towards them, the air around them seemed to glow. "Legolas, Gimli, how wonderful it is to see you again," said Galadriel. "And who is this timid creature with you?" Galadriel bent down and took Jelena's free hand in hers, gently caressing it with her thumb. She looked at the way Legolas held her other hand, giving her comfort. Galadriel smiled. She knew what was ahead for the girl and was glad she had Legolas for a friend.
"I am Jelena, daughter of Maerdir."
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Jelena. I am Galadriel and this is Lord Celeborn. We will be your hosts while we travel to King Tranduil's kingdom." Galadriel looked at the dress that hung off of Jelena. "Come. My seamstress is traveling with us. She can tend to your gown. I will have her make something for you a well." She tried to lead Jelena away but she would not let go of Legolas. Galadriel took Legolas by the hand. "Legolas, perhaps you could be of assistance?"
~*~*~*~
Jelena and Legolas joined their friends a short time later. Jelena was wearing a tunic and a pair of rolled up leggings. The seamstress kept her gown to make the necessary alterations. Haldir, Gimli and Legolas talked of the battle. Lirimaer and Jelena talked about the Hobbits.
"I met Pippin when they came through Lorien," said Lirimaer "He was an amusing Hobbit."
"Who had a knack of getting into trouble!" added Gimli.
"That may be," said Lirimaer. "You do resemble him quite a lot, Jelena. It is possible you are related to him. You both have the same hair color and the same sparkle in your eyes. One day you will have to travel to Hobbiton and meet them all. Quite the charming bunch they are."
"I would like that very much. I don't know much about my mother's family. I only know that she had a brother and three sisters. One of her sisters was killed when they were attacked. The two had been out picking berries when the orcs captured them."
"Well, we will be leaving early tomorrow," Lirimaer said. "Perhaps we should all get some rest. Jelena can stay in my tent. Haldir, you can share a tent with Legolas and Gimli." She felt Haldir's arm stiffen and gave his hand a squeeze. "Please! Behave Haldir!" she whispered in his ear, giving his lobe a playful bite and a flick with her tongue. "I will make it up to you!" "You had better!" Haldir said, giving her a kiss and a playful smack on the backside.
