Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

"Dol Guldur?" Legolas questioned. "What were you doing there?"

"We were slaves of the orcs. I was born there."

Legolas was astonished. So that is what had happened to Maerdir! thought Legolas. "Why did they hold you captive?"

"There were about a hundred of us in the pits," Jelena said. "They tried to make us into spies for Sauron." Legolas remembered long ago of elves being captured by orcs and tortured and made into spies for Morgoth and Sauron. He did not realize that there were still any held captive. "Most refused so we were made to work for them. We had to keep the fires going. And make their weapons. They never bothered us much unless we didn't do what we were told or we tried to escape."

Gimli took an interest in their conversation and came over and sat with them. "What about your mother? Was she a slave as well?" asked Gimli.

"My father had been held for two years and was made to serve as a healer. They brought my mother and a few other Hobbits there. She had been wounded by an orc arrow and was very ill. My father took care of her. That's how they met and fell in love," said Jelena, smiling.

"And you said she was a Took?" asked Gimli. "I wonder if you are any relation to our young friend, Peregrin Took."

"I would like to meet him. It would be nice to find some family. Is he nearby?"

"I'm afraid he is not. He and our other three Hobbit friends are on their way back to Hobbiton," said Gimli.

"We are on our way to Mirkwood. Your father's parents live there," said Legolas. "I believe you have an uncle as well. We should be getting on our way." He couldn't help but wonder what her grandparents would think of her and if she would be accepted.

They packed up their belongings on Arod and began their journey north. The sun was high when they stopped for a rest. Jelena was exhausted. Legolas insisted on checking her wounds. The whip marks on her back were healing nicely, but her body was tired from the rapid healing.

"Gimli, please ride with Jelena. If we hurry we can make it to Dol Guldur by the evening."

"I can keep up with you, Elf!" growled Gimli. "I do not need to ride that beast like some helpless…"

Legolas cut him off before he could finish. "It's just that Jelena needs to rest and you could keep her from falling off the saddle. Since I know the way, I can lead us there quickly." Legolas lifted Jelena onto the saddle behind a grumbling Gimli. She wrapped her arms about Gimli and quickly fell asleep, her head resting on the dwarf's shoulder.

Legolas brushed the hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear. He looked at her dark-circled, sunken eyes. They were half-closed and glazed over in a healing sleep. His heart went out to this poor creature and all the pain she must have gone through in her life. He hoped that she could find some happiness in Mirkwood.

Legolas walked briskly with Arod for some distance when they began to smell the putrid smoke in the air. They could see thick, black smoke bellowing into the sky far ahead. It was coming from Dol Guldur.

It was starting to get dark. The thick forest and the remains of Dol Guldur could be seen ahead. Legolas looked at his companions, Jelena still asleep and Gimli was starting to nod off. The wind had changed and blew the rancid fumes in a different direction. Legolas could now see what was making all the smoke and was glad that his friends were sleeping. Large mounds of orc bodies were smoldering all around the edge of the forest. The hairs on the back of his neck were standing up. They were being watched.

"Daro!" 1 Several elves dressed in gray stood up from the tall grass and from behind trees. They were poised with their bows and arrows notched.

"I am Legolas, son of Thranduil. And these are my friends, Gimli, son of Gloin and Jelena, daughter of Maerdir."

"Ah, mae govannen, Legolas Thranduilion!" 2

Legolas recognized the voice immediately. "Mae govannen, Haldir o Lórien!"

The elves lowered their bows, staring at the pair on the horse. Gimli eyeballed them back, sitting stiffly in the saddle. Jelena did not move, sleeping and unaware of those around her.

"Gimli, it is nice to see you again," Haldir said dryly.

"Master Haldir," Gimli said with as much warmth as he could muster.

"And who is this girl, Jelena…?" asked Haldir.

"She is the daughter of one of my father's former guards, Maerdir. We found her, or I should say she found us, about a day's ride south from here. She was running from orcs from Dol Guldur and ran into our camp."

"She is an elf?" asked Haldir.

"Half elf, half Hobbit," Legolas said. "I am taking her to her father's family in Mirkwood. She has no one else. Her father was killed." Haldir gave Legolas a questioning look. Legolas understood. He knew how elves could be about accepting outsiders. "What other choice do I have?"

"Well, you can't take her looking like that," Haldir said. "I'll lead you to the camp. You can wash up and get something to eat. My wife might have something for her to wear, although it will be rather large on her."

"Lirimaer is here?" asked Legolas. 3

"She wouldn't let me out of her site!" laughed Haldir, leading then towards the woods.
