Notes: While writing this, I followed the Tolkien's books and the two movies and made up a few things as well. My timeline does not coincide with the books, only to try to keep things short! I hope the translations are correct, if not please email me so I can make any necessary repairs. I hope to add drawings soon, having just moved I will need some time. I hope you enjoy my first fan fic I've ever written, please let me know what you think! This fan fic was also part of the www.haldir-lives.org Fan Fic Challenge.

Legolas and Gimli said goodbye to their friends at Isengard and headed east around the bottom tip of the Misty Mountains to Fangorn Forest. Gimli uttered harsh words under his breath, regretting the promise he had made to his elf-friend. But Legolas did explore the Glittering Caves at Helm's Deep with him and now he had to keep up his end of the bargain. But there was something about that forest that he did not like.

Legolas, though not wanting to leave his friends, felt an urgency to move on. He had the feeling since they were at Edoras for the burial of King Théoden. He felt a vast need to get back to Mirkwood. "Come along, Gimli! It's not much further!"

"What is the hurry, Master Elf? The War is over! Let us take our time!" Gimli had had enough of riding on Arod. He wanted to walk.

"There is still the danger of drifting groups of orcs. If we can reach the forest before nightfall we will be in the safety of the trees. No orc would dare enter Fangorn."

"I do not blame them! I'm not too keen on the idea myself!" Gimli grumbled, making Legolas smile.

"You heard Treebeard. He said we would be safe there. Besides, I am here to protect you," jibed Legolas.

"Protect me! I don't need the protection of some pointy-eared elf!"

"Then let us hurry. I can see the forest edge in the distance."

Legolas rode and Gimli ran for another hour, Legolas far ahead of his out-of-breath Dwarf-friend. They reached the forest just before dark. They only went in a short distance and it was already as black as midnight. "It is just as I remember it. Dark and dreary and the air is so thin, hard to breath. Why did I ever agree to this?" muttered Gimli.

"But look at these trees! I have never seen anything like them; so ancient and magnificent. They are not filled with anger anymore. The great evil has been lifted from this forest. Can you not feel it?" asked Legolas. He looked over at Gimli and saw the sour expression on the Dwarf's face, and shook his head. Dwarves just aren't in tune with nature like Elves, thought Legolas. "Let us set up camp," said Legolas. "I hear a stream nearby and you are looking rather tired."

"Me! Tired? I can go on much further!" Gimli exclaimed, feeling a yawn approaching. Even though they had been together for several months and had become good friends, Gimli would never let the elf think he had bested him.

They spent several days in the forest, making their way north. They met several Ents who had already heard of the Elf/Dwarf team from Merry and Pippin. Even with the hospitality shown to them by the Ents, Gimli wasn't content. Legolas pretended not to notice his grumbling friend, for he also felt it was time to leave.

They made their way across the Field of Celebrant to Lórien. Gimli did not complain when they arrived there. He was hoping to see the Lady of Light one last time. They were immediately stopped at the border by Lórien guards who looked upon Gimli with distaste. The guards told them that the Lord and Lady of the Wood had gone to Dol Guldur with several troops to clear out the remaining evil with Legolas' father, Thranduil. Perhaps this is why I feel an urgency to go home, thought Legolas.

They stayed the night with the border guards, telling them of their adventures of the past few months. During the night, small bands of orcs attacked but were quickly exterminated, with Legolas and Gimli taking part in the battle. It had been a while since they had to fight and both enjoyed the skirmish.

The next morning the Lórien guards took them by boat across a narrow section the Anduin with Arod having to swim the distance. They said their goodbyes and made their way northeast. They decided to make their way to Dol Guldur to help in the battle. They had a day and a half journey by horseback ahead of them. The Lórien guards had given them a few days' supply of lembas for their journey. Gimli was not too pleased to be eating the Elvish waybread again!

"This confounded beast! Too bad it didn't drown while crossing the river! I have had all I can take of riding! My backside is sore!" cried Gimli.

"Don't listen to him," Legolas said to Arod, stroking his neck. "He's a grumpy old Dwarf! I am thankful to have you. You have served us well."

"It is getting late. The animal is getting tired," said Gimli, feeling weary after the long day's ride. "Let us stop for the night. There is plenty of grass here for the beast to eat. Perhaps we can hunt for some meat to eat ourselves."

It was starting to get dark. They gathered some wood together for a small fire when Legolas felt something was wrong. He grabbed his bow and notched an arrow. "Gimli, something aproaches!" Gimli reached for his axe.

A small deer bounded out of the tall grass and bushes through their encampment. "Oof! You just let our dinner get away!" Gimli shouted at Legolas. Legolas stood still, arrow still notched, ready to fire.

"Shh! Something is coming!" whispered Legolas.

Gimli could hear nothing. "Perhaps it's another deer!" whispered Gimli. Now he could hear the sound of things crashing through the brush. He raised his axe.

From out of the bushes burst a creature in an orc's cloak, running straight at them. Legolas pulled back the arrow. "Shoot!" yelled Gimli. It was getting closer. Shoot!" Something told Legolas to hold. "Shoot it now!" Legolas released his arrow, piercing the orc chasing the cloaked creature between the eyes. He had seen frightened blue eyes beneath the hood. The cloaked creature collapsed to the ground in a heap at their feet.

Seven more orcs ran into the encampment, taken out one at a time by Legolas and Gimli. When all were dead, Legolas went to the creature on the ground. It didn't move. The cloak covered the small form, except for its somewhat large bare feet. He noticed the thick callaused soles. A Hobbit? he wondered. With his foot, he rolled the creature onto its back. The hood fell back. Long curly brown hair spilled away from the muddied and bloodied face. Large blue eyes were open, unseeing.

"Is it dead?" asked Gimli.

"I don't know." Legolas bent down and put his fingers to her neck. He felt a weak pulse. "No, she is alive."

"She?!" exclaimed Gimli.
