Notes:
Théoden had invited Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Elladan, Elrohir, Orophin, Rúmil, Haldir and Mereniel to dine at the King’s table that evening. Éorelm agreed to keep Déodred with him for a few hours so Haldir and Mereniel could enjoy some time with their friends. Unfortunately, Théoden, Éomer and Merry would not be in attendance for they were riding to Edoras. Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Elladan and Elrohir were to take a different path that evening; they were to go to Minas Tirith by way of the Paths of the Dead.
The mood at the table was somber. Everyone’s minds were on issues other than the food on their plates. Gimli muttered and growled about the Paths of the Dead. Legolas was silent with a distant look in his eyes. Aragorn pushed the food around on his plate and sighed. The only ones seeming to be enjoying themselves were Haldir, Mereniel, Orophin, Rúmil and the twins. There was much laughter, drinking and talking of times past amongst the elves.
“Do you think it wise to bring the child to Rivendell?” Elladan asked.
“He has no other family. No one will take care of him,” Mereniel said. “I cannot leave him behind; he’s just a child and… I care for him.”
Elladan and Elrohir both sat back in their chairs and sighed. “I don’t think that our father will be too pleased,” Elrohir said.
“I think he would be less pleased if I left him behind to die!” Mereniel blurted out. Haldir’s hand found hers under the table and gave it a gentle squeeze. His thumb caressed the palm of her hand; the simplest touches from him made Mereniel’s pulse quicken. His thumb played with the calluses on her fingers caused by her bowstring over many years. Mereniel looked at him through lowered lashes and sighed, her eyes taking in every angle of his profile.
“If I recall correctly, another human child was raised by your father,” Haldir said, motioning to Aragorn. Aragorn looked up from his plate towards the elves with a raised eyebrow. Haldir smiled. “Yes, I am talking about you, Aragorn! Take a moment from pushing your food around your plate and give us your input on the issue.”
“Mereniel is kind-hearted and patient and would teach him many wonderful things. I think she would do a fine job of raising the boy,” Aragorn said. “As for Elrond, I do not think he will mind.”
Mereniel flashed Aragorn a smile. “Thank you, Aragorn. I take that as a compliment, since I taught you a thing or two while you were growing up.”
All eyes turned towards Aragorn. “Please Aragorn, share with us what she taught you!” Elladan snickered. Orophin and Rúmil nearly spit their drinks across the table. Gimli choked on the food he was eating and Legolas beat on his back to help him. Haldir looked at Mereniel with a raised eyebrow and a smirk in his face. Mereniel turned red after she realized what she had said and everyone had a good laugh at her expense.
“Gentlemen, you are embarrassing the lady!” Legolas said, which only made everyone laugh harder.
“What do you suppose happened to Frodo and Samwise?” Gimli asked. All the laughter stopped and the room grew silent. Mereniel remembered Frodo from when he had arrived to Rivendell; she had assisted Elrond in healing Frodo’s wound. Frodo’s friend, Sam, never left his side until ordered to by Gandalf to take some rest. He was a good friend to Frodo; she hoped the hobbits were safe.
“We can only hope that they are well and still on their journey,” Aragorn said. “We must be on our way as well.” He pushed his chair back and stood, the others following his actions. Haldir still held Mereniel’s hand and helped her to her feet. The group headed towards the gate where the stablemen had their horses waiting. After many sad farewells, Aragorn spoke to Haldir. “Safe journey back to Lórien, mellonamin.”
Haldir bowed to Aragorn, smiled, and embraced the man. “Tenna' ento lye omenta, Aragorn.”
Aragorn hugged Mereniel and kissed her brow. “Take care of Déodred and yourself on your journey back to Rivendell.” Aragorn held her at arm’s length and looked into her eyes. “Please give Arwen my love.”
“I will, Aragorn,” Mereniel reassured him. “Be careful.” Mereniel caressed Aragorn’s cheek. Aragorn mounted his horse and led the group down the causeway.
Haldir, Mereniel, Orophin and Rúmil watched them leave until the guards closed the gate behind them. Rúmil elbowed Orophin, motioning to Haldir and the way he was watching Mereniel. The two brothers smiled. “I am feeling rather tired, Orophin,” Rúmil said. “Perhaps we should turn in for the night. We have a long ride tomorrow.”
Haldir noticed the smirks on their faces and looked at them with suspicion. “What are you two up to?”
“Us? Nothing!” Orophin said. “We are tired, that is all. Goodnight, Haldir, Mereniel.”
“Goodnight,” Haldir said. Orophin and Rúmil walked towards their rooms and Haldir thought he heard them laughing. “Come with me,” Haldir said to Mereniel, taking her hand and leading her to the top of the wall. They sat and watched the sun set and their friends ride across the Deeping Coomb until they were out of sight. They looked to the east at the dark gloom that hung over Mordor; it would be just a matter of time before the forces of Sauron were unleashed. They both prayed to the Valar for the safety of their friends.
Mereniel glanced at Haldir. The sunset sparkled in his eyes and made his hair shine like spun gold. A light breeze tossed a few stray strands about his shoulders. He turned and smiled at Mereniel, making her stomach tie in knots. At that moment all Mereniel could think about was kissing him, pressing her mouth against his, tasting him. The urge raged through her body and mind and it took all her will to control herself. Never before had a male affected her in this way, so lost in her emotions, so…
“What are you thinking about, Mereniel?” Haldir asked, snapping her back to reality.
Mereniel could feel her cheeks burning with embarrassment. “I… I was thinking about our journey back to Lórien,” she said quickly. From the look on Haldir’s face she knew he didn’t believe her and she felt his arm slip about her waist.
He saw the flush of her cheeks and thought that she looked beautiful in the fading light of the sunset. “What are you really thinking about?” he asked, his breath on the side of her face. He reached up and touched the strand of hair that curled in front of her ear, twirling it around his calloused finger. He felt her tense up and eased his hold on her waist; perhaps he had mistaken the look in her eyes? He sighed loudly and was about to stand when she placed a gentle kiss on the side of his mouth.
What did I just do? she thought to herself. I’m a fool! “I’m sorry, Hal…” Her words were lost as his lips were upon hers, almost bruising her. His hands were on her face, caressing her, holding her. The shock of his kiss took her breath away. She moaned against his mouth; his tongue sliding over her lips, beckoning them to open for him.
Haldir delved into the sweet recesses of her mouth, his tongue twirling in a sensuous dance with hers. He pulled her tight against his body, feeling her shiver in his arms. He broke the kiss and looked into her eyes. “You are cold,” he said and began to remove his cloak to wrap around her shoulders.
“I am not cold,” Mereniel said with hunger in her eyes. Her self-control gone, she pressed herself against Haldir’s solid chest, finding the hollow in his neck with her tongue. Mereniel could feel Haldir’s heart pounding against her breasts. She gave him little nips and kisses, making Haldir groan with pleasure. Haldir felt raw heat surge through his body and he tilted his head back slightly to give her better access to his throat. His arms went around her and held her tight against him. Mereniel’s hands were in his glorious golden hair as she nibbled up his neck to an earlobe, flicking it with her tongue.
They had gotten so lost in each other that they didn’t hear the sound of footsteps approaching. “Ahem.” Haldir and Mereniel quickly turned as five Rohirrim guards were walking by snickering. Haldir shot them an irritated look and the men quickly went on their way, snickering. Mereniel took Haldir’s hand, gave him a coy grin and stood up, leading him towards the stairway to their room.
They bounded up the steps as fast as they could. When they reached the room, Mereniel was about to open the door when Haldir turned her around and pushed her back against the door. He stared hard into Mereniel’s eyes while holding her wrists down at her sides. The corner of his mouth twitched just before he claimed her lips. He released her hands and slid his up her arms, her shoulders, to the sides of her head, his thumbs caressing the edges of her ears. Mereniel’s hands slid under his tunic, over the rigid muscles of his back. She could feel Haldir’s growing desire pressing against her. “Perhaps we should go inside before this goes any further?” Mereniel said, gasping for breath.
Haldir wrapped her arms around his neck and lifted Mereniel into his arms. “Lle naa vanima, Mereniel,” Haldir whispered in her ear as he nibbled on her lobe. She wrapped her legs around his waist and kissed him deeply. Haldir fumbled for the door handle and managed to push the door open. The door swung open fast and hit the wall.
“Oh!” gasped Éorelm, seeing Haldir and Mereniel in a lovers’ embrace. Mereniel released her legs from Haldir’s waist and backed away from him, blushing. Haldir smoothed out his tunic and stood up straight. Both Éorelm and Déodred were sitting on the edge of the bed staring at them. “I’m sorry!” said Éorelm, blushing, “Déodred was getting tired so I… I thought I better bring him back here…”
“Howdeer! Meweniel!” Déodred screamed, running to them with open arms. He ran to Haldir who scooped up the boy and hugged him. Déodred kissed the elf on the cheek before wriggling away into Mereniel’s waiting arms.
“That is fine, Éorelm,” Haldir said. “Thank you for watching the boy.”
“It was no trouble,” Éorelm said, still embarrassed, as he moved towards the door. “Goodnight.”
Mereniel was sitting on the floor playing a game with Déodred. “I think it is past someone’s bedtime,” Haldir said, picking Déodred up and tossing him onto his bed. He tickled Déodred into a fit of laughter, suddenly realizing how much he had grown attached to the child.
“I don’t want to go to bed!” Déodred exclaimed.
“You are going to have a long day tomorrow and you need your rest,” Haldir said, tucking him in.
“No!” Déodred screamed, flinging back the covers. He hopped up and threw himself into Mereniel’s arms. “Don’t make me go to bed!” Déodred hid his face against Mereniel’s shoulder.
“Déodred, you must go to sleep. We have a long ride to take in the morning,” Mereniel said, rocking Déodred in her arms. She looked up at Haldir who was standing over them scowling.
“But I don’t want to!”
“Déodred, to bed now!” Haldir sternly ordered. He had his hands on his hips looking down at Déodred with a disapproving look. “To bed!”
Déodred tightened his grip around Mereniel’s neck and howled. Mereniel rubbed the crying child’s back to try and calm him down. She turned a cold look at Haldir. “Don’t yell at him! The poor child has been through so much and now you are barking orders at him!”
“You are going to spoil him, Mereniel,” Haldir chided. “He is a child and needs to do as he is told.”
Mereniel was shocked at how hard Haldir was being on Déodred. Just moments before, he was warm and passionate and now he was being so cruel. She couldn’t believe she was just about to take him into her bed. “Can you try to have a little compassion for him?” Mereniel asked trying to remain calm. “Think about how he is feeling; he is scared. How would you feel if you had just lost the only remaining family you had?”
Haldir’s nostrils flared and his eyes burned into Mereniel before he turned and headed towards the door. “I recommend you both get some sleep. We leave at first light,” he said as he slammed the door behind him.
