Chapter 26 - Overwhelming happiness.
As the sun set, Haldir assisted Arvarno in the packing of the baskets. Since the number of elves had swelled, several baskets were now needed to carry the practice equipment. Haldir had quite forgotten that he was still in his armour. It was not until Arvarno mentioned it that Haldir looked down and remembered.
'Where do you plan to store it?' Arvarno asked as he threw the last of the short scimitars into the basket and shut the lid down.
Haldir's lips tightened and he frowned.
'I am not sure. I could put it in my apartment for the moment. I am not sleeping there as I am staying with Nerie.'
Arvarno nodded.
'Then let us go Haldir. My stomach is telling me that it needs food. Your archery challenge has made me more hungry than I care to think of.'
Haldir chuckled as he and Arvarno walked to Haldir's talan dwelling. Whilst there, Arvarno assisted Haldir in removing the armour and also set it so that it could now be removed by its owner without further assistance.
To pay for his assistance, Haldir allowed Arvarno to use his washroom. Soon a damp but clean Arvarno watched as Haldir place the armour on a stand he had made from large twigs he had searched for as Arvarno washed.
'Not bad Haldir. We will make a scout of you yet!' Arvarno teased, his eyes glittered with humour.
Haldir laughed and threw a pillow at Arvarno, who caught it with ease and placed it back onto the bed.
'And now I really must depart. I need to find food and a decent wine.'
Haldir glanced at his armour as he nodded and then stepped out of his room with Arvarno close behind.
'Tomorrow is a rest day. Lord Celeborn thought it wise. Our elves can get their armour tomorrow.'
Arvarno smiled.
'Ah! That is good to know. I have met a female amongst your Galadhrim and I wish to see her more often before we depart. Her skill with her bow is quite amazing'
Haldir chortled.
'No doubt Arvarno but I doubt it is only her skill of her bow that you wish to seek.'
Arvarno laughed heartedly and placed a hand of Haldir's arm.
'You speak the truth and no mistake. You know me too well me friend. To well indeed!'
With that, he released his hand, bowed his head, then left, eye's still twinkling with humour as he turned and ran swiftly down the stairs. Haldir watching him go, a smirk on his face as he ran his fingers through his hair. He then turned and gazed outwards. It was a warm evening for autumn and though the Mellyrn trees kept some of their leaves during winter, the hues of golds and yellows tinted the main stay of the trees of Lothlorien.
Haldir breathed in deeply, his senses fully heightened as his eyes sought the edges of the forest from where he stood. He would miss his beloved forest.
With a rueful smile, Haldir then turned and made his way to Nerie's.
He noticed a subtle difference as he entered their dwelling. Scented candles were lit filling the room with the heady scent of summer flowers. Sumile meowed her hello as Haldir stroked her as he glanced around the room, then saw Nerie sitting on the bench that sat on her balcony.
Haldir walked silently upto Nerie, who was looking outwards to the setting sun that could be seen amongst the tree tops. Her hair moved with the slight breeze and the fading sun gave it a copper tone. Haldir smiled at the sight of his love.
Gently, Haldir place his hands around Nerie's shoulders and leant down so his head rested against the side of her head.
'I have missed you.' Haldir whispered as he raised a hand and stroked the hair away from Nerie's ear, then place a gentle kiss on her neck.
Nerie sighed as her hands came upwards to join with his.
'And I you. Have you had a good day?'
'Aye my love.' Haldir replied, savouring Nerie's smell and soft cheek against his.
Nerie smiled.
'I saw you in your armour today.' Nerie murmured.
Haldir tensed slightly, then relaxed. So it was her he sensed!Nerie noted the pause and added.
'I thought you looked so handsome in your armour. It really does suit you.'
Haldir chuckled, blushing from the compliment.
'Thank you Nerie. So? What did you do today?'
Nerie smiled to herself as her excitement built. She had been longing to tell Haldir the news but had to wait. She did not want to distract Haldir from his training.
'Oh this and that. I have been with the children and I also saw Lady Galadriel.'
Haldir's eyebrows rose in surprise as he unwrapped himself from Nerie's hands and stood. Walking quickly, Haldir was soon sat next to Nerie, gazing at her face. To see Lady Galadriel so near to him leaving made Haldir a little uncomfortable.
'And what did the Lady of Light have to say?'
Nerie's eyes stared at her hands as they still held the rose that Galadriel gave her. Haldir saw the rose and realised it was one from the Ladies garden.
'She told me you would come back to me.' Nerie whispered and though Haldir was pleased that Lady Galadriel was confident that he would return Haldir could tell there was something else unsaid. Gently placing a hand on Nerie's, Haldir gently coaxed.
'And what else?'
Nerie raised her face to smile at her beloved. Haldir's hair shimmered in the setting sun and his face so gentle and yet full of concern. Nerie's eyes twinkled in the sunset.
'It seems that our love is no longer for us alone.'
Haldir frowned. He was not used to riddles from Nerie. His hands tightened around Nerie's and asked quietly,
'Tell me Nerie.'
Nerie licked her lips with nerves, looked downwards for a second to his strong hands surrounding hers, then looked upward again.
'I carry our child Haldir.' Nerie whispered.
Haldir's mouth opened, his whole being shook with the words. A father! He sat there stunned for several seconds, unable to neither move or speak. Then in one movement, his arms surrounded Nerie in an all encompassing embrace, his lips on her hair.
Haldir's breathing was rapid as Nerie held onto her husband. She was worried as Haldir neither spoke or moved, then as he held her, all her fears were driven away.
'You honour me with your love and you give freely a child. I am so proud of you and I love you so much.' Haldir said hoarsely, emotions hitting him so hard that he feared that he would scream, cry, shout and laugh all at the same time!
Nerie closed her eyes, her love complete.
Haldir drew back as his lips took hers, so gentle but demanding of loves crave and reassurance. Nerie sighed at his touch.
When, at last, Haldir drew back, he looked down at Nerie's body and placed a gentle hand on Nerie's stomach, amazed that under his hand held his child.
'I cannot comprehend what luck has sent you to me Nerie. We are truly blessed.' Haldir whispered.
Nerie watched, a gentle smile on her face and sighed deeply. Her cares now where gone.
'We will have to look after you. Did you know for an elf woman, it is a year they carry the child?'
Nerie's eye's widened.
'I hope it is not that long. Human's only carry for nine months.' She said, humour filling her but also a tang of worry. A year seemed an awful long time.
Haldir chuckled as he gently rubbed her stomach.
'I guess this one will decide what it wants to do.'
'Aye my love. I guess that is true enough. We shall but see.'
Haldir's hand came up to cup Nerie's face in the palm of his hand as he gently and slowly lowered his lips to hers. The kiss was so full of love that Nerie felt her heart would burst.
When Haldir eventually pulled away, he smiled at Nerie.
'I think we need to eat. I have not eaten all day and you need to look after yourself. Come! Tonight I will prepare supper for all three of us.'
With a final kiss, Haldir arose, dragging Nerie with him.
That night, as Haldir watched Nerie sleep, his head resting on one hand, his heart was torn immeasurably. Nerie's face was so gentle in the moonlight, her eyelashes fluttered as she dreamed. Haldir's love for Nerie was never ending, never fading and now even more so as she carried his child. His child! Haldir smiled at that thought as he gently placed a hand on Nerie's stomach. His thoughts then flew to the near future when he had to leave. The smile left his face as quickly as it had arrived, his heart now full of sorrow that tears brimmed. How he wanted to stay! With the knowledge that Nerie now carried his child was an extra burden that, though Haldir felt blessed to carry, also felt distressed because of it. But now, he had another reason to return. He had to!
Haldir's lips tightened as fortitude filled him. Lady Galadriel had said, had she not, that he would return. Haldir relaxed, knowing that his Lady of Light would never lie. Haldir then gazed at Nerie yet again, her beauty he drank as eagerly as a fine wine. To short an hour had they left and Haldir would enjoy the next day with his wife, the mother of his child. Again, pure joy filled his soul and with soft loving eyes, Haldir leant foward and gently kissed Nerie. She stirred as her lips felt the barest of kisses.
As Nerie opened her eyes she saw Haldir smiling gently at her. His hair glistening in the moonlight as it hung and draped around his flawless bare chest. She could feel Haldir's hand on her stomach and she smiled at Haldir with a warmth that filled her whole being. Never in her life had she felt so wanted, so loved. This fine elf, once so arrogant and aloof was now so full of love that he showed her many, many times and each time was better as they learned more about each other. That night being no exception but there was a difference. Though the passion was there, Haldir had been so gentle, so slow that Nerie felt that she would die from the pleasure he gave her. It was as if Haldir was scared to hurt Nerie and their child with his lovemaking.
'What is it?' Nerie murmured as she raised her hand to stroke the strong contours of Haldir's face. He sighed and his eyes shut at her touch. Nerie's hand found themselves along Haldir's neck and ear and as she reached up and stroked his ear, Haldir groaned and leant into her hand. He then opened his eyes and gazed at his beloved, the look of love clearly on her face.
'I was just thinking my beloved. I was just locking your face into my memory so that I may carry it in my soul.'
Nerie smiled as her hand slipped around Haldir's neck and pulled him towards her. Her lips met his with such a gentle caress, then as Haldir deepened the kiss, their tongues entwined at the same time as their bodies.

Chapter 27 - Day of rest
The warm autumn sun arose through the early mists, swirling around with a passing wind that pushed through the trees and brought a hint of winter chill.
Nerie was awoken by the sound of a flute being played. Haldir was no where to be seen as Nerie sat and listened intently to the music. The tune was unknown to her but the player drew such deep melody that Nerie felt her toes tapping in the slow time it was being played. At a steady pace, the harmony seemingly capturing the suns rays as they spilled through the dappling leaves of the Mellyrn trees. It was then Nerie realised that the door was open to her balcony. She rose and placed an underdress over her head, letting it fall to the ground as her arms wound their way into the sleeves. Nerie then stepped out onto the balcony to find Haldir draped on the balcony edge. Dressed in the familiar and more comfortable clothes of the border elves, Haldir's back rested onto the talan dwelling wall as one leg lay on the rim of the balistrade, the other dangling and swinging in time with the music. The wooden flute was made to make music that Nerie could only wonder at. Haldir's fingers ran over the holes as his eyes were closed, seemingly enveloped in his own melody. Soon the harmony was ended and Haldir lowered the flute onto his lap. As he opened his eyes, fully aware that Nerie was watching him silently from the doorway of their apartment, he turned and smiled.
'Good morning my love.' Haldir murmured as he quickly swung his leg over the ballistrade to stand. Quickly passing the gap between them, Haldir surrounded Nerie is a warm embrace.
'You play beautifully Haldir.' Nerie whispered as her face dwelt on Haldir's chest. Haldir smiled at the compliment, then pulled back to gaze at Nerie with love.
'You have me all day today. What do you wish to do?'
Nerie caught a mischevious glint in Haldir's eyes and laughed.
'I am happy to be in your company, where ever that maybe beloved. But don't forget we have to visit Rumil and Alasse today.'
Haldir nodded.
'Aye. I think Alasse and Rumil make a wonderful pair.'
'As do I. Now let me get dressed. The wind is chilled.'
Haldir grinned as he walked Nerie backwards into the apartment, his arms still around her.
'Oh? Do you want to get dressed so quickly?' Haldir murmured in Nerie's ear, as he kicked the door shut as he passed through and guided Nerie back to bedroom.
Later, as they walked over the walkways between talans towards Alasse's apartments, they met Arvarno with a female elf Haldir knew as Silieth. She was one of the best female Galadhrim archers that Haldir had trained.
'Good morrow my friend. Nerie, you are more beautiful every time I see you.' said Arvarno, his hand on his chest, his head bowed. Silieth bowed in silence, a slight smile on her lips.
Haldir placed an arm around Nerie.
'She does doesn't she Arvarno. We have joyous news my friend. Nerie carries my child.' he said proudly.
Arvarno smiled broadly at both Haldir and Nerie.
'That is the best news I have heard for some time Haldir! I am so pleased for you both!' Arvarno's eyes glittered with pleasure.
Haldir felt proud. It still felt odd on his lips, to say he would be a father but his heart swelled as he saw the look on Arvarno's face.
'I was just out for some archery practice. Do you fancy joining me?' Arvarno asked, his eye's on Silieth.
Haldir smiled.
'Nay my friend. Nerie and I are visiting my brother and his wife.'
Arvarno's eyebrow's raised themselves as the information piqued his interest.
'Rumil?' he enquired. Haldir nodded.
'Aye. He and Alasse joined yesterday!'
'Hah!.' Arvarno laughed, 'It seems a pleasant day is to be had all. I will take your leave then. Silieth and I have a small wager to sort.'
Haldir smirked as Arvarno bowed and turned to leave.
'Silieth. Be kind to him!' Haldir called.
Silieth smiled, bowed her head in respect, then followed Arvarno, who grinned at the comment.
Alasse looked radiant as she opened the door. Her eyes glittered with pleasure and joy. Rumil and she had joined and she knew she was with child. It was certain! Haldir and Nerie spent some hours with his brother and Alasse and both couples shared their joy between them. Neither Haldir or Rumil could comprehend that their lives had changed so much in such a short period of time.
After a pleasant meal, Haldir and Nerie left Rumil and Alasse to enjoy their time together. Haldir led Nerie down into the forest and guided her to a nearby stream, its water clear and glittering as it shimmered in the sunlight.
'I will miss my woods.' Haldir murmured, almost to himself, as he looked at the trees that surrounded him. Haldir's senses revelled in the surrounding nature as his fingers strayed over low branches. Haldir leant into the autumn leaves, pressing them into his face, his face treewards. Nerie watched her love as she strolled over to a large rock by the stream and sat quietly, its roughness scraping the skin on her hands. Nerie looked skywards also, her eyes closed, as her skin tingled under the suns rays. The gentle sound of the stream lulled Nerie and she sighed deeply, tension easing from every muscle.
Haldir turned and watched Nerie, her face one of pleasure and peace. With a small smile, Haldir padded over to Nerie and with fingers outstretched, gently stroked her jawline. Nerie smiled as she opened her eyes and gazed at Haldir.
'You leave in a few days Haldir. Why don't you spend time in these woods tonight. I can hear your soul singing when you are amongst the trees.'
Haldir leant forwards and brushed his lips against Nerie's.
'I don't want to spend time away from you. My trees I can live without for a while. You, I fear, is another matter. I cannot live without you.'
Nerie smiled as Haldir nuzzled his face with her's. Her arms came up to entwine themselves into Haldir's silken hair. Nerie then sighed. It was time to be honest.
'Let us not hide each others fears Haldir. I know you fear your death. I have known for some time.'
Haldir hissed as he brought his head sharply, catching Nerie's hands as he did.
'Who told you?' Haldir demanded, his body coiled in anger. He never wanted Nerie to know!
Nerie smiled compassionately.
'No one but yourself. I know you too well, my love, for you to hide such things for me. I may be young Haldir but I have a head and mind. I also have a heart that sings with yours. I can see your anxiousness about what comes.'
Haldir slumped to the ground, the strength suddenly gone from his legs. How could he have been so stupid to not see.
'I did not-' Haldir began, shock in his voice, but he was cut off by Nerie's fingers on his lips.
Nerie slid down the stone so that she huddled against Haldir, her eyes deep blue and searching.
'I love you Haldir. More than I thought ever could be possible. I would die for you. To keep you safe, aye I would do that.' Nerie added, when Haldir looked into her eyes, deep in thought and awe.
'You need to do this Haldir. Otherwise there is nothing left for us. This world would be gone and we would go to the Sacred Isles but the rest of human kind will die. I fear I would be the only one left.'
Haldir, his head on one side, smiled gently.
'You are not afraid?'
Fierce pride shone in Nerie's eyes.
'No.' She whispered, as her hand covered her stomach. 'No, I am not afraid Haldir. I know you will return to me.'
Haldir leant forward into Nerie's waiting arms, and kissed her so deeply, so soundly that Nerie had no doubt in her mind. All fear, all doubt had gone for them both. Whatever fate had to deal, both would face their own in the knowledge that they had enough love to survive the dark times ahead.

Chapter 28 - Preparations
Haldir stretched, his armour creaking slightly. It was mid afternoon on the eve of leaving his beloved Lothlorien. Though the wind brought promise of a deeper autumn, Haldir could not enjoy it. It was then, in the corner of his eye, that he spotted Arvarno with Lord Elrond walking towards him across the practice field. As they neared, Haldir bowed his head in reverence and respect.
'Well met Lord Elrond.' Haldir murmured, then added 'Arvarno.'
Arvarno's eyes shone in amusement.
A fleeting smile flashed across Lord Elrond's face as his head bowed.
'Well met indeed Haldir of Lorien. I hear from Arvarno, that you have the best archers in all of elfendom.'
Arvarno smirked as he saw Haldir's face. Embarressment came all to rarely on the face of the March Warden on Lorien.
'I could not possibly say sire.' Haldir replied softly, his eyes hard on Arvarno, who was now struggling not to laugh outloud.
'I need to speak to you Haldir. Can we sit?' Elrond asked, his hand indicating to a nearby bench.
Haldir and Arvarno followed Elrond to the seat and sat beside each other.
In a quiet voice, Elrond began.
'I have a message for you to give to the King of Rohan.'
Haldir nodded, and Elrond continued.
'You must tell him that there was once an alliance between elves and men. Long ago, we fought and died together. We have come to honour that allegiance. He will know what you mean and he will understand.'
Haldir sat, his mind memorising the words Lord Elrond had told him. Pride swelled in his chest and as he looked up into Lord Elrond's eyes, his own glittered.
'I will do as you ask.' Haldir said. His heart was now ready for the battle ahead.
That evening, the fifty archers gathered together, fully sheathed in armour. Galadriam bows in their hands, and elven arrows in quivers on their backs. Some wore their helmets, most did not. Haldir watched the milling elves with Arvarno, who was now clad in elven armour similiar to Haldir's.
'I thought you were going with the others?' Haldir asked, concern in his voice.
Arvarno smiled, his hair tied back away from his face. A few stray hairs blew across, which Arvarno moved with ease.
'Nay. I am to come with you my friend. You need someone to look after your back!' Arvarno chuckled. ' Besides, I am the third best healer in Rivendell, apart from Elrond and Glorfindel.'
Haldir nodded, pleased that he had such support by his side.
'Then I welcome you Arvarno. The road will not be so bleak.'
Arvarno, fully aware of how Haldir felt, placed a comforting hand on Haldir's shoulder.
After a while, the group of elves settled to rest. The whole group would be gone before first light and as soft lights glowed in the coming darkness, Arvarno got up.
'I take myself to rest Haldir. I think you need to see Nerie before you go don't you?'
Haldir nodded. He had not wanted to see Nerie. He could not face her pain. Though Nerie had been brave and never complained, Haldir could feel the turmoil of her emotions that built within her.
Arvarno left and Haldir followed shortly after. He arrived at Nerie's door and opened it, only to realise that he had left his armour on. Nerie's face smiled though her eyes showed her pain as she saw Haldir dressed for battle.
Nerie hesitated and grabbed the table edge. Here stood Haldir, fully armoured and prepared. No longer could they wait for another day. No more nights after this would follow together.
Slowly, Haldir swung the quiver from his back and took off his sword belt. He then undid the clip and the armour fell from his body, hitting the floor with a dull thud. Without a word, Haldir stood in front on Nerie, unsure of what to say. Emotions making him tongue tied as he took a step forward then another. He watched Nerie, her body tense, as he stood in front of her. Then with complete gentleness, Haldir reached up and stroked Nerie around the head and face. Haldir's face softened as a single tear fell from Nerie's eye. Using his thumb, Haldir wiped the tear away.
'Remember Nerie. No tears. Don't cry for me.' he whispered, eyes lost in his own tears as they brimmed. Then, with a hand encompassing Nerie's, Haldir led her into the bedroom and shut the door. Haldir then turned and drank in the image of Nerie who stood before him.
Dressed in only an under dress, its sheerness hiding little, Haldir wondered if he would live past this night, such was his heart in pain for fear of losing the only thing that loved him. He panted slightly as his fingers slid the fabric down off from her shoulders so that is gracefully slid to her feet.
Nerie looked upward to Haldir, eyes still brimming with unshed tears. Hands rested on his chest as Haldir's head slowly came down to kiss Nerie, first tentatively, then more surely. Nerie placed her hands down, then up under Haldir's shirt to feel the hardness of the muscle that dwelt under perfect skin. Haldir's arms surrounded Nerie, and lifting her gently, carried her the last few steps to the bed. As Haldir laid Nerie down, he leant back to remove his tunic. Kicking his boots to one side, Haldir slid his breeches off, then turned to remove them. Nerie watched her lover; her husband undress. It was not long before Haldir lay beside her, stroking and kissing every inch of her body as if his hands and lips would make a memory to bind and take.
Their lovemaking that night was full of love and sorrow. Never had Haldir felt such depth of feelings, his soul as bare as the night after the Glade. In the last few hours, they lay together, listening to each others hearts, sharing kisses and warmth of their bodies but all to soon it was time to leave.
Nerie watched in silence as Haldir got dressed. His eyes dark and brooding and almost unreadable. He had to be strong against the fear in his heart that threatened to spill and make him run away from the task.
When he was finally attired, Haldir stood against the doorway, his feelings making him force air into a tightening chest. Nerie came upto him, her eyes wide and so full of love. As her hands found his, Haldir looked down into the face of his desire, his life love.
'You will return to me Haldir of Lorien. We will be waiting for your return.'
Nerie leant upwards, a hand following to caress his cheek.
'I love you husband.'
'And I love you wife.' Haldir whispered, turmoil filling his heart. As he bent downwards to kiss Nerie for a final time, Nerie wrapped her arms around his neck, making the kiss deeper.
A horn rang out clear and true into the early morning air.
Haldir eased Nerie from him, then opened the door. Nerie did not want to go to the forest floor. She didn't want him to see her cry. With a brave face, she mouthed
'I love you.' to Haldir as he took the first step down from the talan to the stairs below. Haldir paused, then said.
'I will return. Whatever happens Nerie, love our child for it is a part of us both that will never die.' Haldir paused again, then added. ' I love you beloved, holder of my heart.' before finally disappearing down the steps.
Nerie went back into the doorway and as she closed it, she slid down it to form a crumpled mass on the floor. Fear and hatred of the world that robbed her of her soul mate filled her, making her scream silently from her soul. Deep wrenching sobs hung in the air of Nerie's room as the horn rang out again.
Haldir heard Nerie as he stepped downwards. Gritting his teeth through pain of leaving, Haldir's composure was hard as he came to his group. Arvarno was waiting, as was Lord Elrond, Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel. His archers stood still and in line waiting for orders. Other elves had surrounded the formed archers to say farewell and to seek their faces for one more moment. Lady Galadriel watched Haldir as he strode down the last few steps and stood in front of them.
'Keep safe Haldir of Lorien. Your destiny is you own. Only you will know if you have the strength to return.' Lady Galadriel said, her eyes deeply blue and filled with care.
Haldir nodded but did not reply, his heart was not giving of such pleasantries at that moment.
Rumil and Orophin ran up to Haldir.
'Take care brother. My your bow never fail you.' Rumil said as his hugged Haldir tightly.
'Farewell Haldir. We will look after Nerie for you. Do not worry.' Orophin murmured as Rumil stepped. Haldir glared at him for a moment, then his face softened as his hand clasped Orophin's shoulder.
'Love her brothers. She will need love and support whilst I am gone.'
With a final hug to Orophin, Haldir turned round to join the ranks of the waiting elves.
Lord Elrond stepped in front of Haldir, his arm outstretched. Haldir took it firmly with his own.
'Do not forget what I told you Haldir of Lorien. It is vital he hears my message.'
'I will my lord.' Haldir replied. With a shake of the hand, Lord Elrond added,
'May your enemies fall before you.'
With that, Haldir stepped back, breaking the grip of Elronds hand on his own.
Turning to face the waiting elves, Haldir shouted.
'Let us go. To Helms Deep!'
With that, the whole of the troop turned singluarly and as one, then followed Haldir and Arvarno into the forests and out to the outskirts of Lothlorien and the dark road ahead.
Lady Galadriel waited until all her Galadhrim had departed. Lord Celeborn waited anxiously by her side. She seemed to be distant of late, as if the cares of the whole world were on her shoulders.
He placed a loving arm around hers.
'Let us go Galadriel. They have left us.'
Galadriel slowly turned to look at Celeborn. Surprise came to Celebron's face when he saw tears on Galadriel's cheeks.
'I fear I have sent my March Warden to his death.' Galadriel whispered as Celeborn slowly reached up and stroked the tears away. He shook his head at her words.
'Nay my love. He is strong and now he has more reason to come back than before. Worry not my beloved. Haldir will return.'
Galadriel smiled slightly, to reassure Celeborn, as he turned her and led her to their gardens. Some peace amongst the most loved thing she had would help his love but as Galadriel walked, her mind was for Nerie and her child.

Chapter 29 - The dark road
They moved with stealth along the forest edge, then finally upon the plains before. For many days and nights they travelled, running through open grasslands, barely making a sound. They rested little as all the elves knew that time was short and to get to Helm's Deep was vital.
On the rare nights that the elves rested, Haldir lay back and gazed at the stars above him. They glittered like little faint candles against the blackest velvet. Haldir breathed deeply, the scent of crushed grass surrounded his senses as his hands locked themselves behind his head. He wondered if Nerie looked at the stars or if she slept. Haldir's memory seaking out thoughts of Nerie and they came unbidden. The shine of her hair in the sunlight, her gentle touch on his body. Haldir smiled gently as he remembered her fingers in his hair, her lips on his. A warm glow filled him as his thoughts showed him Nerie who carried his child. The human child who arrived with tormented soul. This fragile human child who had broken his protective emotional boundary with a simple touch. Haldir let out a deep sigh as he relaxed. Few nights would he rest, he knew, now the battle was at hand. Haldir's soul seeked reassurance and he wished he was surrounded with trees. He knew he would rest easier when up a talan than on the floor. Slowly, easing into dreamstate, his last conscious thoughts were of Nerie.
Over the days of travelling, the sky grew darker and as they ran, the sounds of drums could be heard on the fell wind. Haldir's heart pounded when he heard the drums begin their dreaded beating and as he ran harder, he hoped they was not too late. Sounds of horses could be heard in the night as as they continued onwards but Haldir ignored them. Stealth hid them away from the riders as they passed.
It was dark when they arrived, not a league away from Helm's Deep. Haldir watched, crouched down on a ridge, Arvarno at his side. The hoards of orcs and Uruk Hai were moving like a black mist along the ground from the far south.
'This does not look good.' Arvarno whispered.
Haldir heard but did not reply. His eyes were scanning the walls of the castle. Flickering lights showed figures running along the battlements. With keen eyes, Haldir could tell there were few men on the walls and the frantic running showed fear amongst those who were housed there.
Haldir lips tightened as he watched, a plan beginning in his thoughts. At last he turned and placed an hand on Arvarno's arm.
'Let us show those orcs whom they fight. Let us give those in that castle hope.'
Arvarno nodded and followed Haldir down the shingle ridge towards the waiting archers down below. Taking his bow from another elf, Haldir stood back and said, in a loud clear voice.
'Those in that castle have no hope without us. Let us give them hope! Arvarno, blow the horn of Lorien. Let them know we are here.'
Arvarno smiled. Haldir alway's seemed to know how to put fear into the hearts of the enemy with the slightest trick. Still smiling, Arvarno put his lips to the horn and blew a long and melodious note. It seemed to put pride in all the waiting elves and with the note still hanging in the air, the elves marched side by side as one column with Haldir in the lead. Arvarno was behind him, first in the column. As they strode towards the walls of the battlements, Haldir heard a great commotion coming from above. For a moment he wondered if, in their fright, the inhabitants would attack them but nothing was to be feared for as they walked up the ramp towards the great gate, it opened and the defenders let them in.
Haldir guided the elves upwards towards the centre of the keep, knowing this was most likely the staying place of those in charge. The people of Rohan pressed themselves against the stone walls as the elves passed them but Haldir cared not.
At last, the way opened to a courtyard with steps to the left as Haldir entered. Men with mail and sword enclosed the area as an old man in fine Rohan armour came down the steps towards Haldir. Haldir stood, pride in his stature as he faced the King of Rohan. Aware of his love of a human who bore his child, Haldir gave the message.
'I bring word from Elrond of Rivendell. An alliance once existed between elves and men. Long ago, we fought and died together.'
Haldir paused as he saw Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn appear at the top of the steps.
'We have come to honour that allegiance.'
Aragorn ran down the remaining steps and hugged Haldir so tightly that initially Haldir was unsure. Then smiling, he returned the embrace of a friend.
Aragorn pulled back, tears almost brimming as relief and happiness threatened to overwhelm him.
'Mae Govannen! You are most welcome!' Aragorn said huskily, relief obvious in his voice.
Haldir's heart swelled with pride. Not only would he fight for the loyalty of the elves but for his wife and her kind.
As Haldir stepped back, the elf column turned as one, the noise resounding as it echoed around the keeps walls.
'We are proud to fight alongside men once more.' Haldir said, his voice thick with emotion.
As Legolas and Gimli watched with hope in their hearts, Haldir was guided to one side by Aragorn.
'Place your elves alongside the battlements. Their skill in their bows will be best spent there. I will get refreshments sent to them. You have travelled far.'
Haldir nodded and turned to Arvarno who had been listening. He nodded and the troop moved. Aragorn watched the elves depart to the waiting positions.
'Now come for refreshment yourself. You can tell me what you know and I can tell you of our plan.'
Haldir nodded and with Legolas and Gimli following, they entered the main doors of the inner hall of the keep.
Later that same evening, the dark army arrived. Screams and shouts came from the mass that seemed to want to slam into the walls of Helm's Deep. The men of Rohan watched, terror in their hearts. Never had they seen such a host that now stood just a few yards from their castle walls. The land seemed to crawl as one black, seething mass of hatred. The stench of the orc army filled the valley air and made some of the men on the battlements gag. The elves watched impassively. Fear of death was not something that an elf bore and they watched, strong and proud, on the battlements awaiting the command.
Arvarno stood with the elven archers, his eyes darting behind him, wondering where Haldir could be. It had been over an hour since they had arrived and Arvarno was concerned. Knowing Haldir as he had done, he knew that Haldir would want to be here, then a movement came from the left and Arvarno breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Haldir striding towards him, his face grim.
'How are my group?' he asked as he stood beside Arvarno, his eyes now outwards to the dark host below.
'Fed and watered if that is what you mean Haldir. We are fine. Instructions have been given to the weakest places to aim for. Where have you been?'
Haldir's lips tightened.
'The Lord of the Rohan and Aragorn wished to talk to me. They wanted to know if we knew of any more that would come to our aid. These are desperate men Arvarno.'
'I can tell,' Arvarno agreed, as he watched the background running of boys wearing ill fitting mail and carrying swords far to heavy to make a half decent swing. 'But they have much to fight for.'
Haldir nodded slightly with a smile.
'Yes, but not all hope is lost. Mithrandir has returned to us. He did not die when the Balrog dragged him down to the depths of hell and beyond. Even now, he flies on a horse of great strength and stature to get aid.'
Arvarno's eyebrows shot upwards.
'Mithrandir lives! Then praise be to Estel! We may be saved after all!'
Haldir placed a reassuring hand on Arvarno's arm.
'We may yet be my friend. We may yet be.' Haldir agreed.
Then they stood in a calm silence, their eyes seeking out targets for the battle that would soon commence.
As the first arrow flew from beyond the wall, Haldir was ready. The sky grew even darker, as if evil itself had formed to make a barrier to force the brave to flee. Haldir glanced at Arvarno, reassured that his friend was there. It was then the rain began, heavy, pelting, relentless water threw itself down from the sky. It had begun.
The screams grew from the heaving mass of orc and Urik Hai, then as one, they charged the walls. With shouts of instructions, Haldir led the volley's of arrows, cutting through the masses like a scythe through long grass but still they came onwards. Still the orcs ran forwards, over fallen comrades, uncaring in who fell beneath them just as long as they could get a chance to kill humans. Elves fell down behind and alongside Haldir and Arvarno. Eye's unseeing as they fell into death as arrows protruded crudely from their bodies.
But again and again the arrows fell into the army below, seemingly unending. Haldir blinked the water from his eyes, his clothes now sticking to his body as he stretched again to loose. With his final arrow spent, Haldir threw his now useless bow down and drew his sword. Arvarno was by his side.
'Let's kill some orc!' Arvarno cried as he swung at an orc who climbed over the battlement from the ladder below. The orc fell backwards, taking a deadly hit. As it fell, it unbalanced the ladder and both the orc and ladder fell back and downwards, taking its carriers with it.
Haldir nodded and parried a swing from another orc, then twisting slightly, swung upwards to decaptitate his opponent. Orc blood splattered into Haldir's face and he spat. Its foul taste now in his mouth, Haldir's determination grew. He continued to fight, parry, thrust and swing but still the orcs continued forwards and upwards.
Suddenly the ground shook beneath Haldir's feet as a huge explosion filled the air. The sound was deafening as huge blocks from the wall scattered as if a giant had knocked down the wall. Then the wall blocks, blown from the explosion, fell into the oncoming black host. As the dust settled, Haldir could see the main wall had been breached. Distracted by this sight, Haldir swung and parried a large orc before him. It was then he heard Aragorn's voice.
'Fall back!'
Haldir nodded, then felt the sting as the orc pushed a sword into his side. It sliced beneath one of the plates of his armour and cut deeply into his chest. Haldir gasped but angered beyond reason, lunged forwards to kill the orc in his next stroke. It was then he realised he had difficulty breathing. Staggering forwards, he never saw the Urik Hai behind him but he felt the metal as it sliced into his shoulder and back. The pain was beyond imagining as Haldir felt himself drift. He looked downwards into the faces of his fellow elves that lay dead at his feet.
'I have failed you Nerie!' Haldir thought to himself as he fell downwards into unconsciousness, his eyes open.

Chapter 30 - Repent and Restore
As Arvarno fought he saw Haldir fall. Screaming in defiance, Arvarno fought back through the black throng on top of the battlement. As he did, he watched Aragorn lift and seemingly check Haldir, bow his head in sorrow, then left Haldir to lie amongst the fallen. Arvarno's soul screamed in protest and his efforts became more intense and savage. Never had he fought the way he did that night on that battlement to get to his friends' side. Panic filled Arvarno as he neared Haldir for no movement could be seen.
Dispatching the nearest orc that got in his way, Arvarno quickly knelt to feel Haldir's skin. Thank Elbereth! Haldir still lived!
Spying an elf who stood defending the wall, despite orders to leave. Arvarno grabbed him and shouted to be heard above the noise of war, that they had to get Haldir down and safe. The elf nodded and between them and the men of Rohan in front and behind, Arvarno, the elf and the unconscious form of Haldir made it to safety into a crevice alongside one of the inner walls. They crouched down, hidden from the sight of all as the darkness and shadows hid them.
'Calenthon isn't it ?' Arvarno asked as he knelt down and began to untie the thong that held Haldir's armour in check.
'Yes,' the elf replied, panting from exertion and the spririt of battle. His eye's fell to the prone Haldir. 'Will he live?'
Arvarno's expression was grim as he assessed Haldir's heart and breathing as he removed the armour. He saw the blood seeping into Haldir's under tunic from the sword injury and his lips tightened. As he turned to remove the back part of the armour, Arvarno hissed with shock at the deep gauging cut that would have nearly cut Haldir into two if it had not been for the fine Rivendell armour.
'Thank Elbereth for small mercies!' Arvarno's eyes softened slightly as he gazed at Haldir, who's face was so pale that it seemed to glow in the dark. 'You are a stubborn one at that Haldir my old friend. Any normal elf would have died by now. Stay with me old friend. I still have a wager to win with you'
Arvarno looked up to see Calenthon watching, unmoving against the shadow of the wall.
'Help me.' Arvarno ordered as he rummaged into one of his carrier pouches he always had with him. Pulling out a small cloth pouch, Arvarno looked at the silent Calenthon. 'Pull up his tunic. One wound I can deal with for now. The other I need time and space and I have neither at this moment.'
Arvarno waited until the wound was clear from fabric. Then, gently, he opened the pouch and began to sprinkle the powder onto the wound. As the powder touched the skin, it began to smoke. Arvarno saw the horror in Calenthon's eyes.
'It is a cleansing powder. Cleans and cauterises.' Arvarno explained as he pulled the pouches ties together and placed it back into his carrier pouch, then pulling out a small green stoppered bottle and some lint, Arvarno pulled the stopper out of the bottle with his teeth and poured some of the mixture around the dressing. Replacing the stopper into its bottle, Arvarno moved the dressing so that the green liquid eventually covered most of the surface. Then in one movement, Arvarno flipped the lint over and placed it onto the now red wound.
'This will seal the wound. Cursed orc had a lucky shot. It has pierced his lung. Now, Calenthon. I want you to hold Haldir and assess his colour. I need to heal him and I am not as good as Lord Elrond but needs must.'
