Chapter 21 - The Joining
Haldir walked to Nerie's and knocked on the door. A few seconds later it opened as Nerie pulled the door.
'I've been busy. I am sorry to be so late.' Haldir said apologetically.
Nerie, though tired, smiled at her elven archer.
'Come in Haldir. I have some mulled wine.'
Haldir stepped into Nerie's room and unbuckled his sword. Placing the sword, his quiver and his bow next to the door, Sumile didn't wait anymore and wrapped herself around his legs in greeting.
'Prowl.' Sumile growled.
'Hello Sumile. Have you been behaving?' Haldir asked as he stroked Sumile down her back and along her tail.
'Yowl.' Sumile replied, her back arching.
Haldir stood and walked to the lounge chair. Nerie was waiting with the mulled wine. She handed him a glass goblet as Haldir sat down, then sat besides him.
'The fellowship have left. I had to guide and protect both them and Lady Galadriel to our boats. That is why I am late.'
Nerie sipped her wine and watched Haldir drink his.
'It is not your fault and I am not angry.'
Haldir gazed at Nerie and suddenly felt so tired. Stifling a yawn with the back of a hand, Haldir murmured.
'This is a quick visit. I have a long day tomorrow and I can see you are tired.'
Nerie laughed.
'I look tired!'
Nerie placed a hand onto Haldir's and whispered.
'You do not have to leave. Stay Haldir and sleep here like we used to. I miss your company and warmth.'
Haldir shook his head.
'You know I cannot.'
'Can not or will not Haldir? I promise to behave.' Nerie replied, a sly smile on her face. 'Honest!' she added.
Haldir smiled as he saw Nerie's expression, her eyes wide in mock innocence.
'But I can not Nerie. You tempt me too much.'
Nerie shook her head.
'I am not taking no for an answer!' she cried as she stood and placed her wine on the table. Grabbing Haldir's hand, Nerie pulled the now laughing Haldir upwards. Haldir drank the last of the wine and quickly placed the glass onto the table as he was pulled into the bedroom. As he entered, Nerie let go and shut the door.
'Now what do you intend to do?' Haldir chuckled as he watched Nerie step past him.
'Get into bed Haldir.' Nerie replied nonchantly, her eyes twinkling, as she shrugged her over dress off and walked into the bathroom.
Haldir smiled as he sat on the bed and pulled off his boots. As Haldir pulled off his tunic, Nerie came in from the bathroom, brushing her hair.
'Aren't you asleep yet?' Nerie teased as she walked over to where Haldir sat.
'Let me be Nerie. I still have to wash!'
Nerie laughed as she began to unplait Haldir's hair.
'You don't need a bath. You don't smell that bad!'
At that, Haldir snorted in amusement and grabbed Nerie and threw her squealing onto the bed. Haldir followed so that he straddled her body whilst his strong arms and hands held the now squirming Nerie down.
'Haldir! Not fair!' Nerie cried as she struggled against Haldir's hands, her wrists firmly pinned onto the bed.
'Oh? So my comforts you care not for?'
Nerie squealed then laughed again as she looked at Haldir's face, so noble yet so amused.
'Haldir!' Nerie cried laughingly, wriggling more to gain release. A slow smile crossed Haldir's lips. Nerie's body movements made interesting sensations in Haldir's groin.
'Careful Nerie. You may regret doing that. I want to sleep!' Haldir chuckled as he let go of her hands and rolled off. Nerie laughed all the more and then grabbed a pillow and threw it to the now departing Haldir as he dove into the bathroom.
Nerie sat up and wiped her eyes, tears from laughing had rolled down her face. Soon, Nerie calmed but still she smiled. She climbed into bed, candlelight now making the room cosy and enclosed.
Haldir returned, hair wet and naked torso, shadows exagerated his muscle definition. His elven breeches he kept on for modesty. Haldir climbed into bed next to Nerie and placed an arm out for her to snuggle into his side.
They lay there for a few minutes in silence, neither wanting to break the silence. Nerie placed a hand on Haldir's bare chest, her touch making him jump. Haldir smiled ruefully.
'Sorry Nerie.'
Nerie kissed Haldir's cheek, then placed her hand back onto Haldir's chest. She felt his heart beat under her palm as her hand followed the muscles in his chest. Years of sword play and archery had made Haldir muscular and defined. Nerie continued her ministrations and noted Haldir's breathing quickening. As Nerie came downwards onto his stomach, Haldir's hand clamped down onto it.
'Please! Nerie! If you continue, I will regret it.' Haldir groaned.
'Why?' Nerie whispered as her fingers crossed over Haldir's belly button.
Haldir turned over to face Nerie, making Nerie move her hand. He then kissed her with such tenderness that Nerie's body melted into Haldir's.
'I want our first time to be special.' Haldir murmured as he surrounded Nerie's body with his own.
'Haldir. Our first time will be special, no matter when or where. You are noble and strong, kind and gentle. In all this things you are special to me. That is why I love you.'
Haldir gazed with love at Nerie, her blue eyes glittering in the candle light.
'Nerie -' Haldir whispered at he bent down to kiss her lips, to delve into her mouth and taste deeply of sweetness and mulled wine. Warm, strong arms surrounded Nerie and pulled her towards Haldir.
He could feel her body through the fabric of her nightwear, the way her breasts lay on his chest; how her hips moved slightly as his hand slid downward to rest on her on her hip. Haldir's erection was now painfully hard and felt uncomfortable in his under breeches. Haldir's lips crept their way across Nerie's jaw to an ear and began to suck and lick her ear making Nerie moan. Haldir groaned as the fabric tightened all the more around his throbbing member, making Haldir stop.
'Nerie. I can't.' he groaned as he pulled away.
'Why not?' Nerie asked, her hands stroking Haldir's shoulders and face.
'Because -' and Haldir stopped, sudden embarressment stopping what he was about to say.
Nerie smiled and lowered her hands making Haldir growl as Nerie touched Haldir's stiff erection through the fabric, then rose slightly to unloosen the ties, which fell apart as Haldir's hard member eased out of its tight constriction.
'NO!' Haldir hissed as he reached for Nerie's hands, stopping them from touching him.
Nerie shook Haldir off and leant up onto one arm, her head resting on her hand. She looked down upon Haldir with eyes full of love.
'I want to know my elf, my lord and love. Know doubt you know what I look like as you and your brothers stripped me at the river. Being honourable in battle is a fine thing Haldir. Being honourable in love is also fine but not when it stops us from showing our love for each other.'
Then suddenly, Nerie sat upward and in one swift movement removed her gown. Haldir watched, his eyes wide with wonder as his beautiful love sat there, naked and seemingly shimmering in light from the candles. Her nipples taut and so ready to be touched. Haldir's penis jumped at that thought and Haldir closed his eyes.
'I am yours Haldir. I always will be. We have but two short months. Let us not waste time.'
Haldir opened his eyes to find Nerie beside him, her hand resting on his chest, her eyes twinkling. With the sensation of naked skin next to him. Haldir could no longer ignore what he wanted so desperately. With a growl, Haldir enveloped Nerie, all thoughts aside, just longing for touch and to be touched. Both were soon naked as they roamed each others bodies, hot lips and hands against willing flesh as they entwined themselves. Haldir's lips roamed down from Nerie's face to her breasts, savouring each with his hot mouth. Nerie cried out with every taste he took of her hard nipples and as he began to suck, Nerie arched into Haldir, making as much body contact as possible, her own hands gripping onto Haldir's back.
Haldir's callussed hands roamed her body, searching for the reactions that caused Nerie to cry out or moan as the pleasure built. Haldir's jutting erection now rubbed against her abdomen, slickened by pre-cum. Haldir clenched his teeth as powerful reactions nearly took him to a new awareness.
As Haldir's hands roamed lower to find Nerie's inner thighs and the wetness between. Nerie shuddered and groaned, pushing her hips into those hands. wanting as much contact as possible. Haldir savoured the new sensations and feelings he gained from his hands as he rubbed Nerie's out edges, then with a flat hand rubbed her inner warmth and as he did so, Nerie's clitorus enflamed and shot electric pulses of pure pleasure down Nerie's body, making her hiss and gasp. Smiling at the reaction he gained, slowly, with one finger, he swept around the outer entrance. then slowly dove into the waiting wetness. Nerie's hips bucked as she cried out, pleasure building beyond measure, her body writhing.
Desperately wanting to reciprocate, Nerie's hands found Haldir's hot and slick member and encircled it with her hands making Haldir groan. With firm fingers, Nerie stroked him, tracing around his hips and cupping his now tightened sacs in her hands. Haldir stopped his ministrations for this was too much. Growling, partly out of need and frustration, Haldir rolled gently on top of Nerie, grabbing holding both her hands and placing them above her head. She could feel Haldir's hard erection rubbing against her and she pushed her hips upwards, wanting him so badly. Haldir panted, his eyes never leaving Nerie's.
'We can still stop -' Haldir began, but Nerie leant upwards and kissed Haldir so passionately, her tongue diving into Haldir's. That was all Haldir needed.
Slowly Haldir slid into Nerie and she gasped, partly out of pain and partly out of pleasure.
'I have hurt you!' Haldir said hoarsly, his movements stopped in an instant.
'Nay Haldir. It is normal for humans the first time. The pain is gone.' Nerie panted.
Haldir kissed Nerie deeply making her moan again.
'Please.' Nerie begged, her hips moving, making Haldir groan and bury himself deeply into Nerie's waiting warmth. The tightness surrounded Haldir and he revelled in the pleasure as it built as he rubbed against her inner walls.
Nerie moved in time, her hips rhthmically moving with Haldir, making him push deeper each time. Haldir's grip on Nerie's hands tightened as his pace quickened, intense sensations making his body move, giving him such pleasure that Haldir gasped. He was so near release, he began to see spots in his eyes but Haldir stilled slightly for he wanted Nerie to have the same pleasure peaks. His hands found their way under Nerie who suddenly found herself straddled over Haldir, his hands gripping her hips, his pace never stopping.
The sensations built until Nerie thought she could take no more. Nerie could feel Haldir's body going tense as he thrust hard into her as he panted against her neck. Nerie raised herself and placed her hands on his chest, Haldir's hands coming up to caress and massage Nerie's breasts. He then sat up and suckled her nipples and she pushed him so deep into her that she cried out again. His hands found their way back to her buttocks and using his hands, he paced both of them, their hips grinding together.
'Haldir!' Nerie cried as she felt herself tip into the rushes of the orgasms he gave her. Nerie's body shuddered uncontrollably as she heard Haldir cry out. His own orgasm making his body thrust jerkily as each pulse hit him. They held each other tightly, welcoming the release that their bodies had given each other. Nerie rested her head on Haldir's shoulder and gently began to stroke his back with her finger tips, her lips tasted the salt of his skin as she gently kissed his neck. Haldir pulled Nerie back, his arms still surrounding her. He kissed her gently, lips gently roaming as his hands stroked Nerie's back. His body shuddered through exertion, tiredness and release. Nerie broke the kiss to gaze at Haldir, her hands coming up to trace his fine features as she eased his hair away from his face.
'I think you need to rest.' Nerie murmured.
'I do not want to move.' Haldir replied. Nerie smiled warmly.
'I do not want to move either but we cannot stay like all night my love.'
With that Nerie pulled her body upwards to allow Haldir's now spent and flacid member to ease itself from her body. Haldir sighed as he leant backwards to fall onto the bed. Nerie smiled as she watched Haldir closed his eyes, his breathing now easing.
'Come, let's get under the covers. I want to lie beside you.'
Haldir wriggled slightly so that covers could be manouvered into a better position as Nerie slipped alongside him, her head resting on his shoulder.
'Thank you.' Haldir murmured as he rested his head against Nerie's.
'What for?'
'Because you have given me apart of yourself that cannot be given again. I love you more deeply than ever. You do realise that since we have coupled you are now my wife.'
Nerie smiled and yawned.
'Well Haldir. I cannot think of anything else I would want to be.'
Haldir smiled broadly as he gently kissed Nerie on the forehead and shut his eyes. His body was truly spent and he needed sleep. Soon they were both deeply asleep.

Chapter 22 - Training Begins
Haldir was awoken by the first rays of shine that shone through Nerie's windows. He turned his head to see Nerie still asleep next time him. His heart swelled with love and pride as he remembered what they shared the previous night and he leant over and gently kissed Nerie. Nerie murmured and moved as she opened her eyes and smiled.
'Good morning my husband. I hope you slept well?'
Haldir chuckled as he kissed Nerie again.
'Well enough my wife. Well enough indeed. I must go.'
'I know.'
Haldir rose and left the bed, grabbing his clothes as he went. Nerie watched as Haldir dressed and as he sat down to put his boots on, Nerie came across the bed and wrapped her arms around Haldir's body, her head resting on his back. Haldir leant his head back as his arms came up and stroked her hands.
'This will not get me onto the archery fields' Haldir smiled.
'I know but I wanted a hug before you left me.'
Haldir turned slightly.
'And what makes you think I would not hold you before I left?'
Nerie chuckled and released him as Haldir stood and opened the door. Nerie followed Haldir to the front door, Sumile jumping down from her sleeping platform and meowing in feline protest for her breakfast. Haldir ignored Sumile, grabbed his cloak and slid it over his head, then turned and placed his quiver over his shoulder and wrapped the belt holding the sheathed elven sword around his waist. Finally he picked up the bow and looked at Nerie, who came forwards to hold him tightly.
'I will return.'
'I will be here.' Nerie replied as she tiptoed upward and kissed Haldir. Smiling slightly, Haldir stood away and opened the door. He gazed at Nerie for a moment.
'My heart sings for us Nerie. You have shown me how good life can be.'
With that Haldir left as Nerie stepped to the doorway. She saw Haldir run down the steps and into the mists that surrounded the mellyrn trees. With a sigh, Nerie closed the door as Sumile growled now in protest of having no food in her bowl.
'Do you never stop eating Sumile?' Nerie laughed as she stroked Sumile's head to supplicate her. Sumile just looked at Nerie as if it was a very silly question indeed!
Haldir was the first elf to arrive onto the practice fields but soon others came. Orophin and Rumil, carrying a large basket between them, walked upto Haldir and called their greetings. Haldir raised a hand in return.'You look well and happy this morning brother!' Orophin called as he strolled over, his eyes noting the subtle change in Haldir's presence.
'Aye I am that Orophin. Now, let us get ourselves sorted. As you began yesterday, we will continue. Rumil, you are the best at hand to hand combat. Orophin, you are better swordsman than Rumil so that is your group. I shall ensure our archers are well practiced.'
Rumil and Orophin nodded. Haldir continued.
'Let us wait a few more minutes, then the whole group shall follow me. We need to loosen up stiff sleep ridden muscles before we can fight. Injuries that are self inflicted are avoidable.'
With that, Haldir put his bow, quiver and sword onto the ground. Removing his cloak, Haldir watched, jaw clenched, as the stragglers came up last. He did a mental head count as he watched the elves come over to where he, Orophin and Rumil stood. There was eighty five all told.
'Where are the others?' Haldir asked Orophin.
'They will arrive later today. I had a struggle brother finding galadhrim to replace the border watchers we want to join us.'
Haldir nodded then stepped in front of the group.
He eyed them as he noted their state of appearance. Some would need a talking too about adequate clothing for training.
'We shall run. All of you will follow me. We need to loosen ourselves before we train.' Haldir looked around closely, making several elves lower their heads.
'After that, we shall split into three groups. One with me practicing archery. One with Rumil to practice hand combat and the other with Orophin to practice your sword work.' Haldir noted that each elf had heard his orders. He turned and set off at a fair pace.
'Now Run!' Haldir yelled as he set off into the woods. The other elves followed close behind.
The day went well. Haldir was impressed with his group for he knew as Captain of the Galadhrim guards, the elves of Lothlorien would not be wanting in the skills of archery. Haldir turned to watch Rumil and Orophin train their groups. Haldir's lips tightened as he saw slackness in the swordwork. This was not good! Though Haldir knew of the mission ahead, he was glad to assess the elves at their current potential. At least they would be better trained by the time the Rivendell elves arrived with Lord Elrond. Haldir watched with interest at Rumil's class. It seemed some of the galadhrim had some ideas of their own that they wished to share, most of which Haldir could see would work well.
It was eventide before the Haldir thought enough training had been done. He stood with his brothers watching the other elves leave with strict instructions to be back at sunrise. Groups would be swapped tomorrow so that all had fair chance to each speciality.
'I fear we have more work than we can handle Haldir.' Orophin murmured as he picked up a few of the practice swords and placed them into the basket.
Haldir frowned as he strapped his sword back around his waist.
'Nay. The elves who are lacking will show themselves in the next few days. We shall concentrate on each where they have failed.'
Rumil strolled up, carrying the last of the small wooden hand daggers.
'We have a long road ahead of us.' Rumil replied as he placed the last of the items into the basket and closed the lid.
Haldir watched, reminded of the dread he felt.
'Yes Rumil. Long roads we all must walk in these dark times.'
Rumil watched Haldir's face as he placed his own cloak around his shoulders.
Haldir, realising his own thoughts were on his face for all to see, looked up sharply and in a jovial tone added.
'Let us rest brothers. It has been a long day. I will meet again tomorrow at first light?'
Rumil and Orophin nodded. Haldir bowed his head, then turned quickly and strolled back towards the talans of home.
'He and Nerie have joined.' Orophin whispered, as he watched Haldir disappear into the woods that surrounded the practice field.
'Aye. I can see.'
'What happens if his feelings of doom come true Rumil? What will happen to Nerie?'
'She will come with the rest of us to the sacred Isle.'
'But -' Orophin began but Rumil stopped him with an upright hand, his memory reminding him of Alasse and how fond of her he had grown.
'Enough! Let us go home. I see a hot bath and some of that mead you have been saving being opened.'
Orophin nodded, and both picked up the basket and placed it to one side of the field, then departed the practice fields to return home.

Chapter 23 - Lord Elrond Arrives
Haldir and Nerie made their nights together last, ever knowing that their days together became shorter as the nights passed. Training remained intense over the next seven days before the Rivendell elves came. On the evening of the seventh day, Haldir heard the horns as the Rivendell host, lead by Lord Elrond himself, arrived at Caras Galadhon. Haldir stood at the side of Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel in the main palace as they waited for their guests to arrive, his had resting lightly on his scimitar. Soon, the dark haired figure of Lord Elrond appeared beside his own warden, Arvarno. Elrond's aged eyes belied the youthful looks he carried. Haldir knew that Lord Elrond was far older than he, though, as Haldir thought as he watched Lord Elrond and Arvarno bowed in respect to his Lord and Lady, Lord Elrond had aged since last Haldir had seen him.. The lines of worry were etched across his eyes and brow for all to see.
Arvarno had changed not. His dark hair and large brown eyes were so different from Lothlorien elves. Haldir knew Arvarno well and enjoyed his company when they had chance to meet.
'Welcome Elrond. Long have we wished to look upon your face again. It is wonderful to see you old friend.' Lady Galadriel said, her voice light and musical.
'And I you. Both of you. Yet I fear that my coming will the be the undoing of us all.' Elrond replied, his tone deep, his eyes ever watchful.
'Nay Elrond. Your arrival is most welcome and needed. The elves must stand again with man to save middle earth.'
Elrond nodded slightly, his eyes never swaying from Galadriel's face.
'Have the fellowship come this way?' Elrond asked, his gaze finally fell upon Lord Celeborn, who smiled gently.
'They have all come and gone from our lands Elrond. All but Mithrandir. He has been lost to us. Safe passage has been given to the rest along with gifts to aid them. For them we can do no more for the moment.'
Lord Elrond nodded slightly, his heart sad at the loss of the grey pilgrim.
'Now come!' Lady Galadriel smiled. 'Let us for one night enjoy the pleasure of dear, dear friends. Come Elrond. Celeborn and I have a feast to welcome you.'
Elrond bowed yet again and followed Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn to the inner palace. Haldir did not follow. His duty done, he stood until the others had departed, then stepped towards Arvarno.
'Well met my old friend. It is good to see you.' Haldir began with a smile on his face.
Arvarno smiled warmly at Haldir and put out an arm which Haldir gladly clasped and shook in friendship.
'Well met indeed Haldir! It is so good to see a friendly face amongst all the fair folk of Lothlorien.'
'You are most welcome Arvarno. Now come! I have someone who I want you to meet.'
Arvarno raised his eyebrows and chuckled.
'Oh? I had heard someone had taken your heart.'
Haldir chuckled in response.
'More than my friend. She has taken it and I have given it away willingly.'
Arvarno smiled.
'Then lead on Haldir. This is one lady I wish to meet. To be able to take the heart of the March Warden, she must be a formidable lady indeed!'
Haldir smiled as he led Arvarno to Nerie's talan dwelling. Food was already placed on the table as they entered. Rumil, Alasse and Orophin sat on the long lounger sipping wine from glass engraved goblets. They stood as they saw Haldir enter with Arvarno, smiles on their faces.
'Arvarno! Well met!' Rumil cried, stepping forward and grasped Arvarno's arm. Orophin came forward.
'Aye.Well met indeed Arvarno. It has been centuries since we last saw you!' Orophin said.
Arvarno chuckled.
'Orophin. Rumil. It is good to see you too. How is your arm Rumil?'
Rumil laughed suddenly as he subconsciously rubbed his right upper arm. Thoughts crossed his mind of the last time Arvarno has visited Lothlorien and the contest that he and Arvarno has undertaken.
'Healed well Arvarno, though it does ache on cold nights. This is Alasse. My chosen.'
Arvarno smiled and bowed slightly to Alasse, who blushed. Arvarno then glanced at a movement from his right. As he turned he saw a tall human female, her figure lithe and full, her hair blonde and long, as she walked towards the table with a platter of hot roasted vegetables. Elbereth's mouth opened in pleasant shock to see a human so at ease amongst elves. She looked up and gazed at Arvarno, a warm smile on her lips.
'Welcome. My name is Nerie. Please sit, the meal is now ready.' Nerie said in Sindarin, inwardly laughing at Arvarno's shocked face.
Realising his mouth was open, Arvarno snapped it shut and smiled ruefully as he pulled a chair outwards and sat down, his hands resting on the table. Aroma's of the cooked food assailed Arvarno's nostrils as he watched the others sit and his mouth drooled. He noted Haldir sat next to Nerie and the look Haldir gave her was one of pure adoration.
So this was the one who has stolen his heart? Arvarno thought, as he graciously accepted one the many bowls in which a huge variety of food had been placed.
'So tell me Haldir. How did this fair lady steal your heart?'
Haldir chuckled as his hand reached for Nerie's. He explained about the fateful day of Nerie's loss and Arvarno noted Nerie's eye's looking downcast and how Haldir had gone to the Glade of Remembrance with Lady Galadriel. Haldir explained how Nerie was his watcher and through that their friendship grew. Haldir smiled at Nerie who gave him a look of love.
'And so Arvarno, friendship became more. Nerie is my wife.'
Arvarno watched with fascination. He had never seen Haldir so relaxed or happy in all the many centuries that he had known him.
'So are you ready for what comes Haldir?'
Haldir frowned at Arvarno and Rumil hissed. Arvarno frowned slightly.
'What is it? What have I said?'
Haldir shook his head slightly as he glanced at Rumil.
'I will tell you later. Now tell me all your news of Rivendell and how good your elves are. I would not want to be bested.'
Arvarno laughed, glad for the distraction.
'Well -' Arvarno began.
They spent most of that evening together, laughing about good times and friends past and present. Eventually Arvarno yawned and then shrugged at his hosts. The wine had relaxed him more than he would admit and it had been a long ride from Rivendell. Haldir stood, his hand offered.
'I will guide you to your quarters Arvarno.'
Arvarno nodded and took Haldir's hand and stood.
Turning slightly, Arvarno bowed to Nerie who came towards him.
'I hope to see you again Nerie. Your company is wonderful.'
'You are welcome Arvarno. I will see you about no doubt.'
Arvarno smiled, nodded to Rumil, Alasse and Orophin and stepped to the door where Haldir stood.
'Lead on Haldir. The sooner I hit my bed the better!'
Haldir chuckled, glanced at Nerie, then left with Arvarno following in his stead.
As they walked along the talan steps, Arvarno placed a hand on Haldir's arm, making Haldir turn.
'What is bothering you Haldir. My comment at dinner was innocent.'
Haldir's lips tightened as he shook his head.
'Tis nothing my friend.'
'Now after all these years Haldir, you would have remembered that I know when you are lying.'
Haldir tensed, unwilling to speak of his thoughts.
Arvarno watched Haldir as his shoulders tensed around his shoulders, then shrugged.
'Fine Haldir. Keep your secrets.'
Haldir paused in his walk, his head down, then he suddenly turned.
'I will tell you but if you mention this to Nerie, I will personally find you and make you regret it Arvarno!' Haldir snarled.
Arvarno's brown eye's widened at such a change in emotion. Raising his hands, Arvarno found himself suddenly alarmed.
'I will not say a word Haldir.' Arvarnos insisted.
'Swear it!' Haldir hissed.
'I swear! I swear!'
At this Haldir's shoulders relaxed, but his eyes were fixed on Arvarno then suddenly he turned away. Dark eyes scanned the Mellyrn trees.
Arvarno put his head on one side, fully aware something was deeply troubling Haldir.
'What it is Haldir?'
Haldir turned, his voice low as his dark eyes looked angrily at Arvarno.
'I fear my death Arvarno. I can sense it coming.'
Arvarno stared at Haldir for a long while, shocked at what Haldir had said and unsure of what to say in return. Eventually, sighing, he placed an arm on Haldir's shoulder.
'You are sure?'
Haldir's head lowered.
'Aye.'
'And Nerie doesn't know about this?'
Haldir's head shot up, his eye's dark and full of anger.
'You swore!' Haldir hissed.
Arvarno remained calm.
'Aye and I stand by that oath Haldir. She will not learn this from me but do you not thing she ought to know? She will realise, as the time draws near, that there is a problem.'
'I cannot tell her Arvarno. I love her too much. Too deeply, that I do not want her to worry. She will worry enough when I am gone.'
Arvarno's lips tightened, then he relaxed.
'Very well. I will not say a word of this to anyone.'
Haldir smiled slightly.
'My thanks Arvarno. Now let me lead you home.'
The rest of the journey was relaxed and Haldir bowed his leave of Arvarno, then ran back to Nerie's to find Rumil, Orophin and Alasse at the door saying their farewells. They nodded to Haldir as he passed, and Nerie closed the door behind Haldir as he entered.
'Is Arvarno safe and tucked in bed?' Nerie asked as she turned to tidy the table.
Haldir grasped her wrist and brought Nerie to him, then hugged her, burying his face in her hair at the nape of her neck. Nerie smiled as she felt his breath against her.
'Let me clean the plates Haldir.' Nerie whispered as she felt Haldir's hands roam her back, sending shivers down her spine.
'Leave the plates. I need you.'
With that, Haldir picked up Nerie in his arms and carried her to the bedroom and lay her down on the bed.
Nerie watched as Haldir sat on the bed and took his boots off, then his tunic. Haldir then turned and looked at Nerie, a smile on her gentle mouth.
Moving so that he ended up besided Nerie, Haldir stroked her hair. Stray strands had lay on her brow and with gentle fingers, Haldir stroked them away.
Nerie watched her perfect elf as he lay beside her. Haldir's silver blonde hair spread around his shoulders as his head rested on his hand as the other roamed her face. When it came to her mouth, Nerie raised her hand so that it pinned his hand against her mouth, her lips and tongue kissing and licking gently. Haldir closed his eyes as Nerie's ministrations, made his blood feel like liquid fire run through his veins.
Haldir groaned as he opened his eyes and leant forwards, taking Nerie's mouth with his own, his hands now free to pull Nerie towards him.
'I want you. I need you now.' Haldir said hoarsely as he broke the kiss and pulled Nerie's dress upward. Nerie was more than willing to give Haldir what he wished.
Later, as they lay together, arms and legs entwined as Haldir nuzzled Nerie's brow and hair, Nerie sighed deepy.
'I am afraid.'
Haldir frowned and looked downwards to see Nerie looking up at him.
'Why?'
'Because I fear losing you Haldir. Make sure you come back to me.'
Haldir kissed Nerie to reassure then placed his head upon Nerie to make sure she never saw the grimace on Haldir's face as a physical pain shot through his heart. His eyes looked skyward and with all sincerity, whispered,
'I will come back Nerie.'
Nerie snuggled into Haldir's chest and closed her eyes. Haldir's body relaxed against Nerie's but Haldir's mind was beset with the knowledge that he could not promise he would return. It was then, as his mind was in turmoil that Haldir made his mind up that he would face his fate but he would return to Nerie if he could. He must!

Chapter 24 - Rivendell Meets Galadhrim.
The next seven weeks were intense and controlled. The Rivendell elves mixed well with the Galadhrim with good humoured teasing. The total number of elves was nearly three hundred that Haldir could head count. The Rivendell elves were more adapt at fighting on horseback, sword and skirmish. Archery skills had lapsed but Haldir made sure this weak point had strengthened considerably by the time the six weeks had passed. After that time, the Rivendell elves wore the same clothes as Lothlorien elves and apart from having more dark haired elves around, he could not tell the difference between the two.One day, Arvarno came over to where Haldir stood, his large dark eyes watching the archery group as they practiced.
'Well met Haldir. They are looking good.' Arvarno indicated with his head to the group.
Haldir smiled slightly.
'Well met Arvarno. Aye, but I hope it is enough.'
'I came to tell you our armourers have finished and your armour is made. Do you want to try it?'
Haldir thought for a moment, then glad for the distraction, nodded.
'Aye. It is the first time I have worn armour. Let us see if it as uncomfortable as it looks.'
Arvarno laughed heartedly.
'Oh you know nothing until you put one on Haldir. Come.'
Arvarno and Haldir left the practice fields and made their way to the elven smithies that lay a way back from the main city for the smelting and heating of metal was seen as a necessity rather than anything else. The smell was abrupt to some, irritant to others.
Arvarno waved to one of the smithies and from Haldir's eyes, he could tell this one had come from Rivendell.
'Well met Tagarth. Haldir has come to try on his armour.'
A well built elf, arms thicker than Haldir's, stood firmly amongst his smith, his hands resting on the handle of a large hammer. Haldir thought he looked more dwarf than elf apart from his height. This elf was even taller than him!
'Welcome.' the soft toned smithy said, as he bowed his head slightly, then with one hand pointed to a set of armour hanging from a wooden pole hung horizontally from the ceiling. 'It is that one you seek.'
Haldir stared at such stunning workmanship! He had seen elvish armour, hues of gold and blue metal but this was superb. Strips of curved metal, overlaid and strapped together to form movement for the wearer but the utmost protection it carried. Haldir stepped over to the armour, fingers stroking the skilled workmanship of Tagarth.
'Your skills are beyond comprehension Tagarth. This is superb!'
Tagarth held his own counsel but smiled and nodded all the same.
Arvarno assisted Haldir with putting the armour on. Straps held most of the peices together. Eventually Haldir stood facing Arvarno, jiggling slightly as he got used to the extra weight he carried though it was surprisingly light and comfortable.
'Well?' Haldir asked as his hands rested themselves on his hips.
Arvarno smiled lopsidedly.
'Well what?'
Haldir's frowned with feigned impatience.
'How do I look?'
Arvarno snorted, humour filling him.
'As fine as elf as I ever did see.'
Haldir smiled, his eyes sharp.
'You were always a terrible liar. Do you know that?'
At that Arvarno roared with laughter and slapped his hands to his legs.
'Aye my friend. But at least I jest not. How will Nerie stay away once she see's her husband in such finery?'
'That was not funny.' Haldir replied, as he frowned all too aware that this finery had a purpose.
Arvarno raised his hands, still smiling.
'Sorry my friend. Sorry indeed but you do look a fine sight but how will you fair with this in battle. You are not used to fighting in armour.'
Haldir's lips tightened.
'You are right. Let us see how I fair.'
With that, Arvarno and Haldir returned to the practice fields. Elves watched them as they passed, for it has been centuries since an elf was seen wearing armour in Caras Galadhon.
As Haldir approached the feilds, all talking ceased. Haldir felt distinctly uncomfortable under the eyes of so many elves but his pride made him stroll onto the field with extreme confidence.
He bent down to pick up his bow and was surprised at how easily it was to move and twist.
'Let us test the armour Haldir. Shoot at that target over there. Let us see if there is any change in your technique and if I need to get alterations done.'
Haldir nodded and walked to the line that indicated the place to stand and shoot.
Breathing out slowly and very aware of how this strange garment felt, Haldir gripped the bow firmly but gently in his left hand as the other hand took the offered arrow from smiling Arvarno. Nocking the arrow into the fine elven string between two small elven string nocks which held arrows in place and maintained correct positioning time and time again, Haldir's first and second fingers rested around the tip. The third holding the string as firm as the rest.
Haldir then looked up at the target and raised his left arm, muscles tightening in his upper limbs at the same time. His right drawing back the string and arrow so that it barely touched his cheek. As he did, Haldir felt constricted slightly under his right arm. Frowning slightly at being distracted, Haldir concentrated on the target, his sight perfect seeking the centre as he eased his fingers into letting the arrow go in one fluid action, his right arm going gently back so that his hand withdrew behind his ear. The arrow left at speed from the bow and thudded firmly into the straw target, dead centre.
'Good! Good, but I notice your face. Where is it uncomfortable?' Arvarno said as he walked upto where Haldir still stood, his bow lowered.
Haldir shrugged his right shoulder and resting the bow against his body pointed to the area under his arm on the right side.
'Here.'
Arvarno nodded.
'Raise your arm.' he ordered and Haldir did as he was bid.
Arvarno loosened some of the straps that held the armour together at the sides, easing it downward slightly. Arvarno then stood back.
'Try again.'
Haldir nocked another arrow and drew but this time there was no tightening. With a slight smile of pleasure, Haldir loosed. Again, the arrow hit the target dead centre.
Haldir turned as he lowered his bow, a hint of a smile on his lips.
'I think I could get used to this.'
Arvarno chuckled.
'No could get used to it Haldir. You will have to, as will all the others. Over the next two days all the elves will be kitted as you are now. Then the final training begins.'
Haldir nodded.
Aye my friend. All too soon!' Haldir replied, his hand clasped around Arvarno's shoulder, then noticing no sound came from the field as all the elves had been watching, Haldir scowled at the watching elves.
'Well? Have you never seen an elf shoot an arrow before? Get back to your training!' he ordered, his voice firm and full of arrogance.
The elves scattered and the sounds of sword and voice echoed around the feild yet again.
Arvarno chuckled again.
'You haven't lost your skill in diplomacy!'
Haldir frowned slightly then laughed.
'Aye! Now how about a some shooting between us?'
Arvarno nodded.
'Aye. It would be good to see if my skill is still as good as yours.'
Haldir chuckled as he watched Arvarno pick up his quiver and bow. Just as Haldir stood against the line to shoot. he sensed eyes watching from behind him, in the trees. Feeling an overwhelming sense of love, Haldir smiled as he knew Nerie and Alasse watched, then he turned to concentrate on the competition ahead.
The next few hours were very entertaining!

Chapter 25 - The surprise.
That same day, Alasse and Nerie were out walking in the galadhrim woods when they espied the training feilds.
'Who is that in the armour Alasse?' Nerie asked as she saw the imposing figure on the feild.
Alasse gasped and Nerie frowned slightly.
'What?'
'It's Haldir!' Alasse gasped.
Nerie looked harder, her eyesight not as good as an elf, then she saw what Alasse said was true. It was indeed Haldir! The armour hid his form but there was no disguising his stride or the manner in which he held himself. Nerie's mouth felt dry as she watched, love for her elf so deep in her heart but also fully aware that the armour was another step to Haldir leaving her. At that thought, Nerie turned and walked swiftly away.
Alasse followed.
'Nerie?'
'Yes Alasse.'
'Rumil and I intend to join tonight.'
Nerie stopped in her tracks and turned. Alasse looked embarressed. Nerie smiled warmly and stepped to Alasse and hugged her.
'I am pleased for you Alasse. I really am.'
'We have spoken. We have decided that this night will also be the time that I will conceive.'
Nerie's eye's widened.
'You get to choose?'
Alasse smiled in humour.
'Yes. Did I not tell you that?'
Nerie shook her head, he hand dropping down to her abdomen. Nerie had not had a period for eight weeks now, which was late for her. Nerie had wondered if she may have been pregnant herself.
Alasse watched the movement and her eyes widened.
'Do you carry Nerie? Are you pregnant?'
Nerie shrugged.
'I do not know Alasse.'
At that Alasse gently held Nerie's hand.
'Let us see Lady Galadriel. She can tell.'
Nerie nodded and let Alasse guide her to the palace gardens, where it was known Lady Galadriel tended her beloved plants and flowers, ever getting peace in such a beautiful haven.
Lady Galadriel watched Nerie and Alasse as they walked over to where Galadriel sat, smelling a sweet flowering rose that was held in her hands.
'My lady. Nerie has a request.'
Lady Galadriel smiled upward and gracefully arose, her hair shimmering in the dappled sunlight.
Nerie was suddenly nervous as she held Alasse's hand more tightly.
'What it is child?' Lady Galadriel asked, her tone soothing to such nerves.
'I fear I am pregnant my lady.' Nerie finally whispered.
Lady Galadriel smiled warmly.
'Bearing a child is not a fearful thing Nerie but a wonderous experience. To bring new life to the world is an honour and something that is blessed. The elves see new life as such a joy!'
Nerie felt slightly embarressed, her fear unwarrented in front of Galadriel.
Gently, seeing the unease in Nerie's eyes, Lady Galadriel place her hand onto Nerie's abdomen and after a few seconds smiled warmly.
'It is true Nerie. You are with child. You bless us all.' and with that Lady Galadriel leant forward and kissed Nerie on her brow, then stood back.
Alasse's smile was so wide and she felt such joy that she hugged Nerie hard.
Nerie, still shocked, just placed her hands around Alasse.
Lady Galadriel saw the look in Nerie's eyes.
'Nerie.' Lady Galadriel began gently. 'To few children are borne to the elves these last few centuries. Your child will be cherished amongst us all. Do not be afraid.'
'But what about Haldir?' Nerie whispered as she sat on the chair that Lady Galadriel had just alighted from.
Lady Galadriel laughed, her humour filling the garden. Her eyes shone with compassion as she sat next to Nerie.
'Do not worry about Haldir. He will be overjoyed. You have blessed him with a child Nerie. No elf would consider a greater gift than to have a child.'
Nerie gazed at Lady Galadriel's star-shimmering eyes, the blue of which shone with love and Nerie felt a little calmer. Excitement then filled Nerie as she thought of what Haldir would think and how he would react, then her face fell as Nerie remembered again that Haldir would soon be gone.
Lady Galadriel smiled, fully aware of Nerie's concerns and placed a gentle hand on Nerie's.
'Haldir knows his fate Nerie and he is willing to accept what comes. But do not fear for him. I sense that he will come back to you.'
'Really?' Nerie asked hesitantly.
Lady Galadriel just smiled, fully composed, the rose still in her fingers. Slowly she lifted it to her nose and sniffed the scent, then placed the flower into Nerie's hand.
'A child is like this rose Nerie. It is rare and beautiful and full of potential. Love is the same. Haldir will find his way back.'
Nerie then smiled, full of chagrin, as she stood.
'Thank you my lady. For everything.' Nerie whispered.
Galadriel nodded.
'You are most welcome Nerie. I look foward to your coming days. I love children and the joy they bring.'
At that Nerie nodded, then turned to leave the garden, sniffing the rose as she went.
Alasse followed. She had watched the conversation with the deepest respect. She knew Nerie had fears about what would happen once Haldir left. Nerie had once confided to Alasse that she had thought to go with Haldir but Alasse put a stop to that idea. She told Nerie that Haldir needed to protect and to fight. His mind would not be fully concentrating if he thought that Nerie was nearby and in danger. Nerie nodded, accepting Alasse's counsel.
They made their way to the class that was due for the children. For once in several weeks, Nerie felt at peace.
