Chapter 16 - Coming Storm

One bright and warm morning, Nerie sat leaning on a tree with a book in her lap. Long had she tried to read it and apart from a few words, Nerie could understand no more. Reading Sindarin was more difficult than to speak it. Deciding to rest for a while, she lay back with her eyes shut. The sun lay on her face warming her soul. Long had been the winter and to feel the sun burn on her face once more made Nerie full of joy. She smiled to herself as she remembered enjoying the spring with her tribe. At least now she could think of them and not cry. Well most of the time.

A shadow covered the sun and thinking it was a cloud, Nerie opened her eyes to see an elf silhouetted against the sun, his outline black. He stood stock still and said not a word. Nerie waited a few seconds for her eyes to adjust and as they did, she could not believe her eyes! Haldir was home!

'Haldir!' Nerie gasped as Haldir came down and knelt on the forest floor. His strong arms surrounding Nerie and bringing her forward into a a hug that lasted an age.

'Nae sain Luume'.' Haldir whispered into Nerie's hair. Long had he thought of Nerie on those quiet nights on the talans.

'Cormanin lindua ele lle' Nerie responded as she hugged Haldir tightly.

Smiling warmly Haldir leant back but still he held Nerie. Switching to westron, Haldir whispered.

'I have a gift for you.'

Nerie, her head on one side, smiled. Haldir chuckled as he leant backwards and brought forth a small leather bag. Mewing noises came from inside.

Nerie's smile grew as Haldir gave her the bag. Nerie opened it to find a small kitten. A wild cat by its markings, dark black strips against a dark grey background covered its whole. It's eyes were shut and it mewed piteously.

'Oh Haldir. He's so small.'

'She.' Haldir corrected. 'I found her one night just outside the borders of Lothlorien. Her mews were so loud. I found her mother nearby. She had been killed by another. I have done what I can to save her but I fear she needs some mother love.'

'Then let us take her home Haldir. I will nurse her.'

Haldir stood in one fluid movement and assisted Nerie to stand. With the kitten in her arms, still but breathing, Nerie and Haldir made their way back to their rooms, Haldir's arm protectively surrounding Nerie's shoulders. They passed the main kitchens and picked up some milk on the way.

Nerie pushed open the door and walked in, followed by Haldir. As Haldir put his sword, bow and quiver safe, he watched Nerie, as she sat on the long lounger, gently dip her finger into the milk and tease the kitten into tasting it. Soon, it was lapping the milk from her finger as quickly as Nerie could put it there. Nerie looked up with pure pleasure abundant on her face and Haldir smiled and felt a deep warmth inside him grow. Glad to be home he sat next to Nerie, an arm casually placed over her shoulder as he watched the kitten drink its fill, then purring the most gentlest of purrs, it fell asleep in Nerie's arms.

'I think she has found a new mother.' Haldir murmured, his head resting on Nerie's shoulder.

Nerie smiled as she looked sideways to Haldir, then pressed her cheek against his.

'Diala lle Haldir.' Nerie whispered.

''Seasamin.' Haldir replied. His other arm surrounded Nerie and they sat there for some time, just enjoying each others company once again.

After a while, Haldir sat up with a sigh.

'I had to see you first to make sure you where all right but I need to see Lord Celeborn. I have news for him.'

Nerie nodded as Haldir rose from the chair.

'I will bring food back with me. I don't want to go to the main hall. Is that all right with you or did you have other plans?' Haldir asked as he pulled his cloak on and fastened it.

'No. I had no plans.' Nerie replied.

Haldir bent forwards and kissed Nerie on the forehead.

'Good. I will be back as soon as I can. I fear Lord Celeborn is not going to like what I have to tell him.'

Nerie frowned in confusion.

'I will tell you later. I'll bring some more milk.' Haldir added then he was gone.

Nerie sighed at the last words she had heard. Was there trouble? Nerie pondered this as she absentmindedly stroked the kitten which purred louder in pleasure. Nerie looked downwards and smiled.

'Now what to call you my love.' She whispered. Nerie sat and pondered then at last came up with a name that would remind of her of spring.

'Sulime.' She whispered as she cuddled the kitten and waited for Haldir to return.

Haldir stood formally in front of Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel as they pondered the news that Haldir had told them.

'It is indeed worrying Haldir that the Orcs are getting more bold and intruding into the woods.' Lord Celeborn said at length.

'I fear that it will soon be time. The alliance of Elf and Man will be sorely stretched. I fear a great evil is coming.' Lady Galadriel whispered.

Haldir frowned.

'Haldir, I see a group of travelers coming to us. One holds the ring of Sauron himself. We must be cautious. Hold them until I know more. You will know whom of which I speak for Prince Legolas, son of King Thranduil will be accompanying them.'

Haldir bowed his head in acknowledgment.

'Thank you for this news. I take it you will return back to the borders tomorrow?'

Haldir's heart sank. He had hoped to stay for a few days.

'As you wish my lady.' Haldir replied.

'Do not worry about Nerie Haldir. She has settled well and the children love her.'

Haldir smiled, then taking his leave, he turned and left.

Haldir carefully carried the tray up to his rooms and kicked at the door to gain entrance. Nerie opened it with a smile on her face.

'I was wondering how long you would take. I'm starving.'

Haldir placed the tray down on the table, unclasped his cloak and put it over the chair, then sat down and began to dish out the food he had brought. The kitten was asleep on the bed so Nerie sat on the chair.

As they ate, Haldir told Nerie of the increasing threat of Orcs along the borders and that he would have to return the next day. Nerie frowned.

'I know Nerie. I know.' Haldir sighed. 'I had hoped to stay for a few days.'

Nerie shrugged as she ate the last of the bread.

'It is all right Haldir. I understand.'

Haldir raised an eyebrow.

'Do you?'

Nerie smiled gently as she came onto the floor and sat next to Haldir.

'Yes. I have settled well amongst the Galadhrim. I have friends and the children. You don't have to worry about me.' Nerie lowered her eyes as she added, ' I don't feel the pain as hard as I used to.'

Haldir smiled, then mischief came into his eyes.

'Oh?' Haldir said in fake annoyance. ' I worry about you but you don't worry about me?'

Nerie looked up, mouth open in shock at such words. Then she realised Haldir was teasing.

'Why you!' she cried at she leapt at Haldir who was already laughing

They tussled on the floor, Nerie trying to find a spot to tickle Haldir as Haldir did the same to Nerie. In the end, they ended up in a heap on the floor, clothes in disarray and laughing hard.

'Gods girl you bring joy to my sore heart.' Haldir chuckled as he rolled over to face Nerie.

'I've missed your company.' Nerie replied as she looked at Haldir then she sat up.

'I want to go out in the sun. It has lain hidden in winter too long and today is the first warm day of spring.'

Haldir nodded.

'All right but what about the kitten?'

Nerie picked up the bag that Sulime had come in and placed the strap around her neck, then picking up the kitten, Nerie gently placed Sulime into the bag.

'There. Now Sulime will come too.'

'Sulime?' Haldir asked as he placed his cloak around his neck and joined the clasp together.

'Her name.' Nerie explained as she opened the door and walked outside.

Haldir shrugged and closed the door behind him.

They walked downwards to the city floor and strolled in the forest for several hours, speaking of what each had done in the time they were apart, until Sulime started to mew for food again.

The sun was setting as they reached home and Nerie brought Sulime out of the bag. Nerie sat and began to feed the kitten again with the milk as Haldir lit a few candles to drive away the night. Haldir smiled as he watched for a second then he entered the washroom and filled a bath for himself. One of the few luxuries he held was a hot bath and soon the washroom was filled with steam.

Haldir came out to see Nerie place the kitten into the basket that had held her clothes.

'Sulime is settled?'

Nerie looked up and smiled.

'Yes.'

Then she noticed Haldir wince as he pulled his outer tunic over his head. She watched as the under tunic was removed and saw a dark bruise twice the size of her hands on Haldir's right shoulder and back.

'Oh Haldir! What happened?' Nerie cried as she stepped forward and gently touched Haldir's shoulder.

'I fell off a talan Nerie. One I had ordered to be replaced before I came back the first time as it was dangerous. Needless to say the elves who were ordered to do the work will be punished.' Haldir replied, almost embarrassed. 'I am having my bath. Then I will rest. I have to be gone by first light.'

Nerie watched Haldir go into the washroom, the door shutting behind him. Nerie knew she had some ointment for aches and pains. She rummaged around in the drawers next to the bed until she felt a small glass pot. Yes! This was the one!

The washroom door opened and Haldir came out, under breeches and naked torso, rubbing his hair with a bath cloth.

'Sit down.' Nerie commanded, noting his muscular torso and taking Haldir by the hand and leading him to the edge of the bed. Haldir smirked but did as he was bid. What was she up to?

Nerie climbed up behind the now seated Haldir and with pot in hand, pushed the wet hair out of the way then began to rub some of the ointment onto his well muscled shoulder. At first Haldir hissed as the ointment was cold and was a shock on his bath warmed body but soon he sighed under Nerie's ministrations.

Nerie's body began to heat unexpectantly as she rubbed Haldir's shoulder and back. Slowly the rubs became strokes as Nerie rubbed her hand over all of Haldir's back, feeling the strong muscles built after centuries of use with archery and sword. Haldir shivered under her touch but didn't move. Never had anyone touched him like this and Haldir enjoyed it immensely. He let out a small moan as Nerie's other hand came up to join in the ministrations. He then remembered that it was Nerie and in sudden embarrassment Haldir stood up. His heart was pounding. He didn't expect this!

'I have to rest.' Haldir murmured as he turned around, the towel in front of him to hide his arousal. Feeling embarrassed, he didn't want Nerie to see.

Carefully, Haldir slid under the blankets and thanked the gods that they were cold enough to cool his aroused state. Nerie smiled but felt awkward. She too followed suit, slid off her over dress and got into bed, turning to lay on her side facing Haldir. His eyes were shut.

'How's your shoulder?' Nerie whispered.

'Better.' Haldir replied. He felt unnerved and embarrassed. Something he had never felt with Nerie before. Something had changed, emotions stirred.

'Nerie - 'Haldir began.

'Shush Haldir. Sleep.'

Haldir frowned to himself, his lips tight with frustration. Sighing, he opened his eyes and turned over so that he faced Nerie, her eyes now shut.

'We cannot go down that path Nerie. Pairings of humans and elves bring nothing but pain to both. If I was to love you in any way other than friendship then our constant time apart would be intolerable to us both.'

Nerie opened her eyes and looked into those blue eyes and knew it was true but she couldn't help the way she now looked at Haldir. Something had changed and now it seems not for the better. Nerie sighed then placed a hand on Haldir's cheek.

'I think the time for sharing is at an end Haldir. I do not want to lose your friendship.'

Haldir's eyes softened.

'But not tonight Nerie. Let our last night sharing as friends be a comfort to us both until the next time we meet.'

Haldir slid over and encircled Nerie with his arms and there they slept, Nerie's head on Haldir's chest.

In the early morning hours, Nerie felt Haldir move out of the bed and heard him comb his hair, braid it, then get dressed. Only when she heard the sword slide into its sheath did Nerie sit up. She could see Haldir standing at the end of the bed, an imposing figure in the early morning light.

'I didn't want to wake you. I am about to leave.'

Nerie flung the sheets to one side, climbed out of the bed and walked over to the door as Haldir walked to go.

'So you were going to leave without saying goodbye?'

Haldir looked downwards but said nothing..

Nerie smiled gently and using her hand, tipped Haldir's head so that she could see his face. She then leant upwards and kissed Haldir on the cheek.

'May you always be in the sun. I will not be here when you come back.'

Haldir nodded, kissed Nerie on the forehead and whispered.

'I will always be here for you Nerie. That has not changed nor will it.'

'I know.' replied Nerie, then she opened the door. 'Now go. You are needed on the borders Haldir of Lothlorien, March Warden and champion.'

Haldir left silently and Nerie watched as he disappeared down the steps towards the forest floor and beyond. Her heart felt heavy. Never again will their relationship be the same.

Sumile began to mew and sighing Nerie shut the door.

'Coming Sumile.'

Chapter 17 - Destined Meeting

Alasse helped Nerie move out into her own quarters. Galadriel had accepted Nerie's excuse for the move, saying she would need more room for her books. Having only a few items to carry and mostly clothing, it only took a couple of trips. Nerie carried Sumile in her basket as closed the door behind her, pausing one last time.

Alasse waited until Nerie let go of the door and walked to where she waited.

'Now are you going to tell me what the real reason is?' Alasse asked.

'It's nothing Alasse, honest.' Nerie replied, moving the basket into a more comfortable position. It had been a week since Haldir had left and Sulime had grown considerably.

Alasse waited until they finally arrived on the other side of the palace boundary. She opened the door into a large room that functioned for eating and relaxing. The doorway to the balcony was to the left and the main table and chairs where on the right along with the lounge chairs. Ahead lay the doors to the washroom, the bedroom and her own small private kitchen. These quarters were much bigger than Haldir's as Nerie stayed at Caras Galadrim and Haldir spent most of his time at the borders.

Shelves of Sindarin books lay neatly around two walls of the room. On the third lay a large dresser. A bowl of fruit sat there, as did a small bowl of milk. Nerie placed the basket in her bedroom, then came back to see Alasse had wine in two glasses, one of which she passed to Nerie. Then Alasse sat on the long lounger and patted the space beside her.

'Come and sit Nerie. I know you. Your heart had begun to sing before Haldir came home. Now I sense your frustration. Tell me.'

Nerie resignedly sat beside Alasse.

'There is nothing I can hide from you is there?' Nerie asked, her voice trembling, then she sighed.

'Haldir and I. We have changed . . . that is to say . . . I have changed.'

Alasse raised her eyebrows.

'And what happened to do this?'

'Haldir had a bruise on his shoulder. I rubbed some ointment you gave me for aches and pains.'

'And?'

'And nothing Alasse. That's just it. I enjoyed the feeling of Haldir under my fingers as I rubbed the ointment in. He seemed to enjoy it too.'

'How do you know?' Alasse asked leaning forwards.

Nerie blushed.

'Because he groaned Alasse. I thought I was doing something nice. I was just stroking his back when he suddenly got up and said he needed to rest. I don't understand Alasse. I think I am in love with him. I had hoped that Haldir may feel something in return. '

Alasse smiled.

'Haldir does Nerie. That's why he got up. He is but an elf Nerie and one who has no knowledge of females, elf or otherwise. What you did was to make him realise that. Now he is healing, other parts of his soul need release.'

Nerie blushed harder and Alasse giggled at her friends unease.

'He told me that he would not love me Alasse. Not that way.' Nerie whispered as Alasse's laughter eased.

Alasse placed a reassuring hand on Nerie's.

'Let him stew Nerie. He may yet change his mind. Since you have come here I have witnessed such a change in Haldir. He laughs now which he never did before. He was always so pompous. So arrogant. Now . . .' Alasse paused to watch Nerie play with her glass. ' He loves you Nerie. More than he realises. Give time a chance Nerie. With elves, time to adjust is a good thing. Besides, we are all moving soon enough. You included.' Alasse squeezed Nerie's hand and Nerie nodded.

'Now drink up, we have children to teach.'

Nerie sipped some of her wine, then placed the glass on the side table. She stood, walked into the bedroom to put Sulime into her bag, who meowed in protest at being moved then walked with Alasse to where she met the children for the lessons.

Months passed and as the forest changed its shades of dress to a richer green as the year grew older, Orophil and Rumil noticed the change in their brothers behaviour. From the time he had returned from Caras Galadhron, Haldir's temper was short. Orophil guessed instantly that things hadn't gone well with Nerie and told Rumil this.

One night as the moon hid amongst the clouds, giving darkness a new edge, Rumil and Haldir had a watch together.

'Haldir? How is it that I hear nothing of Nerie from you? Did you not see her last time you went home?'

Haldir didn't answer, his eyes looking outwards from the borders. Rumil knew his brother had heard him so tried again.

'You have done something Haldir? Was is it?'

'I -' Haldir began, then stopped, biting his bottom lip.

'What?' Rumil asked yet again as he slid next to Haldir. Only then did Haldir move.

Looking down, Haldir murmured.

'I have done nothing Rumil. That is the point.'

Rumil frowned.

'What do you mean brother?' Rumil asked softly.

Haldir sighed.

'I fear Nerie has feelings for me other than friendship.'

'And that is such a bad thing Haldir?' Rumil asked, as he balanced the end of his bow on his foot.

'Yes. I cannot return that love Rumil.'

'Cannot or will not Haldir?' Rumil replied, watching his brothers face closely.

Haldir's lips tightened.

'Will not.'

Rumil sighed at this.

'Is to love and be loved such a bad thing Haldir?

Annoyance filled Haldir and he turned to reply but his brother had left the talan already.

'Humph!'

Haldir looked outwards to the open lands and beyond. What would it take to escape from the feelings he knew he had but could not voice.

Haldir sighed deeply already knowing the answer.

It was late afternoon that Haldir saw a group of people running towards the borders of Lothlorien. He raised an eyebrow as he saw the dwarf then saw Legolas. This was the group Galadriel had been waiting for. Fear gripped his heart. The ring of Sauron was legendary amongst the elves for its great evil and to think it was coming here to his beloved Lothlorien. Haldir became angry that such a thing would be brought here.

He slipped down from the talan and hid, the other border elves following their lords lead. The dwarfs coarse voice slicing the air and Haldir winced.

' . . . Well there is one dwarf that won't be ensnared so easily. I have the eyes of an eagle and the ears of the fox.'

Annoyed that the vulgar dwarf had called his beloved Lady of Light a witch, Haldir signaled for the elves to move and quickly the group had been subdued.

Haldir came down from where he hid and looked among the band that stood before. He wasn't pleased by what he saw and he saw no sense in Galadriel's insight into even letting them into her woodlands.

'The dwarf breathed so loudly we could have shot him in the dark.' Haldir began, disdain on his face for all to see.

Haldir and the other elves led them into the trees so that they came to the talans. It was nightfall before they began to climb. Introductions were made, albeit short and in the dwarfs case, down right rude. Haldir stepped along the group until he sensed the ring. Fear and anger rising again, Haldir stood above the halfling, brooding and terrible.

'You bring great evil here.'

Haldir then turned and added.

'You can go no further.'

An argument ensued with Aragorn as he pleaded his case. Haldir was not interested if they had Elronds blessing. They could not pass. Aragorn explained that they had journeyed far, seen great peril and had seen Gandalf perish. With that, Haldir raised his eyebrows in disbelief. Gandalf? Mithrandir lost?

Raising his hand to stop Aragorn, Haldir stood still, fear chilling him to the core. Mithrandir lost? Could it be?

'I will see what my Lady decides.'

With that Haldir turned abruptly and left the talan. Finding the falcon trainer, Haldir wrote a small message and watched as it was wrapped into a tiny pod and attached to the falcon who screeched and flapped its wings.

The trainer threw the falcon in the air and Haldir watched as it flew homewards. Soon they would know.

It was very early morning before the falcon returned with the answer. The group must come to Calas Galadhon.

Haldir, his heart heavy, returned to the group. He climbed the talan and spotting Frodo, the halfling said in a abrupt tone.

You will follow me.'

Haldir and his brothers waited for the rest of the group to pick up their belongings, then guiding them down the talans, Haldir led the group into the woods of Lothlorien and onwards to the city.

Chapter 18 -The Return

Haldir stood silently and watched as his Lord and Lady descended the steps. He saw the wonder in the faces of the group and as they spoke in turn, Haldir's heart sank with the loss of Mithrandir. Finally, Lady Galadriel offered them shelter and rest and they took their leave as elves led them away. Haldir nodded to take his leave but the voice of Lady Galadriel hit his soul.

Haldir. Nerie has left your rooms and I know why.

Haldir held his breath as Galadriel came down those last steps and walked over to where Haldir stood. Haldir, his eyes downwards, stood still until Lady Galadriel spoke again.

'Look up Haldir.'

Haldir slowly raised his head until he faced his Lady of Light. Her eyes were hard.

'Why do you insist on torturing yourself?'

Haldir frowned slightly. Lady Galadriel's mouth thinned slightly.

'Nerie has left your rooms. She insisted that she move the day you left to go back to the borders. I can sense that neither of you have argued but still she left. You both need each other to heal Haldir. You may think you are whole but you are not.'

Haldir lowered his head, his shoulders suddenly needing to sag downwards in acknowledgment from Lady Galadriel's words.

Galadriel smiled at her March Warden. She knew the reasons to the parting. It was obvious on Nerie's face when she asked for the separate quarters but Galadriel had decided to hold her knowledge to herself until now.

'Haldir?' Lady Galadriel whispered.

Haldir looked upward to the now gentle face of Galadriel. Her eyes soft with compassion.

'Go and see Nerie. Talk to her. I would not normally encourage a relationship between elves and humans but Nerie is special. I see darkness ahead of us all so to seek some light amongst it is never bad. She is untainted by the world of man. Her father was a special man who has taught her well. She is innocent to the ways of elves and of men. She has no malice in her. She loves you and would do anything to keep that friendship. You truly are family to her now.'

Haldir nodded as Lady Galadriel placed a light kiss on Haldir's cheek.

'She is in the main palace guest rooms. You will know which as she has wind chimes outside her doorway.'

Haldir nodded again, this time stunned from the kiss of Galadriel. Then bowing deeply to both his Lord and Lady, Haldir turned but Galadriel's voice stopped him.

'You are to stay here tonight Haldir, both you and your brothers. We have things to discuss. Come to me tomorrow. I will send word to Rumil and Orophin.'

Haldir bowed again and strode out and upwards, his keen hearing telling him the direction to go.

He came to the talan that held the dwelling of Nerie. Haldir reached up and briefly touched the wooden wind chime that hung from the portal beam.

He then faced the door, his heart in his mouth. Realizing he still had his sword and quiver with him, he unbuckled the items and placed them onto the side, then gently tapped onto the door. There was no answer.

Haldir bit his bottom lip, then gently pushed the doorway open. As he walked silently into the main room, he scanned the room to see the books and belongings, then he saw Nerie asleep on the long lounger. A book across her lap with Sulime asleep on the other end of the lounger. Sulime had grown to full adult now and was a good size for a female hunting cat. Haldir guessed that she must have been at least seven hands in length and four in height from floor to back. Haldir silently padded over to the lounger and saw changes in Nerie since he last was there. Her hair was longer now, almost to her waist and loose in the typical female elf style but the sides were tucked behind her ears. Her figure seemed fuller, more womanly for the elvish clothing complimented her curves and it seemed as if the elves had given her the gift of peace for her face looked so gentle whilst asleep. Haldir gazed for several minutes at Nerie's sleeping form. Long had he dreamt of Nerie whilst on those cold Talans. For centuries, Haldir had loved his beloved forest but now, when he was on the borders, he longed for something that lay in the centre so out of reach. Now he was here besides Nerie and suddenly felt at a loss what to do. Should he go? Should he wake her?

Haldir bit his bottom lip with indecision. Finally, sensing that Nerie would not wake unless made to, Haldir knelt downwards and slowly, so slowly he raised his hand and using the barest touch, traced a line across her forehead. Nerie roused a little and with an annoyed look on her face, brushed the irritation away from her forehead with her hand.

Haldir, feeling mischievous, repeated the act. Nerie was now more awake and murmured.

'Sumile! Stop it!' in perfect Sindarin. Haldir raised his eyebrows. Nerie spoke Sindarin as if she was born to speak it. Smiling, Haldir leant downwards and blowed softly into Nerie's ear.

Nerie turned slightly with a frown on her face and opened her eyes. As she focused, she saw Haldir. With joy in heart but unsure of what Haldir wanted, whispered,

'Hello friend.' with Sindarin ease.

Haldir felt suddenly so guilty. He remembered how he had left. How he had intended to leave without saying good-bye. How his own embarrassment had almost lost him Nerie.

Haldir stroked Nerie's face, his face a mix of emotions. Tear's brimmed but never fell.

'Hello friend.' He replied hoarsely as the mixed emotions ran through him. Nerie watched Haldir's face seemingly torn between seemingly wanting to cry but smiling instead. Haldir leant upwards, removed the book to one side and gently placed his arms around her and held her to him. Tears then fell. Nerie held Haldir to her, the one true friend and companion had returned and Nerie's heart sang for the joy of it. Haldir smelt of the wood, leaf mould and tree sap. Nerie returned the hug in kind, luxuriating in the touch of her beloved elf, her hands resting on his strong back. Then she heard his breathing was ragged.

'Haldir? What's wrong?'

Haldir slowly leant upward. Nerie saw the tears, and with a face full of compassion, raised her hands and wiped away the tears, Haldir's hands following her touch, pressing her hands into his cheeks.

'I am ashamed Nerie. I knew of the emotions you had. I can sense all you feel. I know you love me. That's why I wanted to leave without good-bye. In the past all those who loved me where lost to me. I lost their love.'

Nerie stayed silent as the words sunk in. Then smiling gently, Nerie replied.

'Haldir. You told me that you would always be there for me. You know that applies for you too. I would not do anything to hurt you. I care for your friendship too much. I was scared.'

Haldir smiled at that.

'So was I.' He murmured. His tears stopped and he raised himself upwards to sit on the edge of the lounger. Nerie sat upwards more and placed the book on the floor, then picked up Haldir's hands in her own.

'I can never change the way I feel Haldir. I love you but it is unrequited which I accept. Please don't feel bad Haldir. I left your lodgings because I didn't want to lose our friendship. I left because I knew you would feel uncomfortable around me all the time and I never want that. I love you too much to bring you pain and discomfort.'

Haldir watched Nerie as she spoke, her eyes soft and her voice strong but quiet. He felt the warmth in his hands and felt the turmoil in his heart. He had been told the union between elf and human was wrong! but now here he was, his heart lost to a human woman.

Nerie watched and waited for Haldir to speak or to act. He sat still, gazing at her. She smiled gently, almost embarrassed with the gaze.

Haldir saw that smile and knew he had to voice what his heart was telling him.

'Nerie. You know that I have never had a mate. Not a one true love.' Haldir began, his voice quiet.

Nerie nodded and Haldir continued.

'My heart and my soul have been in torment because of you. You have broken my barriers. You have saved me from my demons. You have seen my heart and soul broken and reborn.' Haldir paused as he swallowed, then looked down. 'You know everything about me Nerie. I know you love me more deeply than the Lake of the Moon. My heart sings when you are near me. You are in my waking and sleeping thoughts. My heart has been telling me something but I have tried to ignore it but I cannot. Not anymore. I love you Nerie.'

Nerie's heart leapt. Haldir loved her!

'Hal-' Nerie began but Haldir cut her off with one finger placed gently on her lips.

'Shh.' He whispered as he leant ever so slowly, watching Nerie's face intently as his lips briefly touched each of her fingers then upwards further so that he gently placed his lips onto hers. Nerie responded to that touch and it was all Haldir required. Haldir reveled in the sensations, for long had he dreamt of this. He closed his eyes to be enveloped by the love he felt. His mouth and tongue savoring Nerie's texture and taste as his hands came around Nerie to bring her to him. His tongue dove into Nerie's mouth and she whimpered as his tongue swirled with hers. Haldir felt warmth grow from within as he deeply tasted Nerie. The sensations were so new but powerful and Haldir wanted so much more. He could feel himself aroused, hard and wanting as his arms crushed Nerie to him, wanting to feel her body against him. Nerie's hands came up and over Haldir's shoulder, her hands entangled amongst his hair, pushing his head towards hers. Her fingers came downwards and touched his ears, which made Haldir gasp in surprise and pull away. Nerie, panting slightly, smiled at Haldir's shocked expression then gently stroked his ears. Haldir leant forwards so that his head rested on Nerie's shoulder. His mouth open as his heightened senses were hit by a new wave of complete and utter pleasure that came from the tip of his head, down his back, to his toes, which curled inside his boots. Haldir let out a low guttural moan as Nerie leant forwards and gently kissed the edge of one ear, her tongue licking the rim and swirling around the inner recesses. Haldir continued to moan. After a few seconds, Nerie drew back and kissed her beloved in his hair. Haldir was panting as he leant back so that his face was next to Nerie's.

'We must stop.' His voice low and hoarse. Haldir's body was tense and extremely aroused.

Nerie kissed him gently on both his eyes, then his nose to which he wrinkled it.

'I want to court you properly. If we keep as we are, I fear that we would lose something special. I love you too much to rush.' Haldir whispered as he kissed Nerie on the forehead, then on her mouth. This time, his touch was one of loving not lust and Nerie sighed deeply as Haldir's touched moved her beyond any experience she had ever had.

Haldir pulled back and shifted slightly which made Sumile grumble. Nerie looked at Sumile, then Haldir and began to giggle. Haldir smiled, then laughed out loud. Sumile looked at them in cat-like disgust and jumped off to find another place to lay.

Nerie stroked Haldir's face along his eyebrow then down to his jaw, then along to his chin.

'I love you beloved.'

Haldir smiled at the touch.

'And I love you. No longer will this soul be alone.'

Nerie came forwards and gently kissed Haldir.

'No,' she whispered as she broke away. 'No longer alone.'

There was a knock at the door which broke the spell. Nerie leant back as Haldir stood up.

'Come in!' Nerie called.

Alasse opened the doorway and spotted Haldir.

'Oh, I. Er. . . I'm so sorry. I shall come back another time.'

Nerie smiled.

'No Alasse. Come in. Haldir has returned to me.'

Alasse noted the reddened cheeks and the kiss blushed lips of both and inwardly smiled.

Haldir, suddenly feeling uncomfortable under Alasse's gaze turned around to face Nerie.

'I want to change and wash. I must smell like an Orc!'

Nerie laughed.

'No, not as bad as an Orc.'

Haldir smiled and leant over to kiss Nerie on the forehead, then her lips.

'I will come back later. I will bring food.' he murmured. He then stood up, turned and as he walked passed Alasse, nodded. Then he was gone.

Alasse watch him go then turned to Nerie, her hand over her mouth.

'I am so sorry.'

Nerie laughed, her heart lighter than it had been for months.

'Don't be. Come and sit. Do you want a drink?'

Alasse came over to sit next to Nerie as Nerie swung her legs off from the lounger and stood to go to the kitchen. Sumile padded over to gain affection from Alasse, who smiled and rubbed Sumile roughly under her chin. Sumile purred loudly with appreciation.

'I take it Haldir has spoken to you.' Alasse said as Nerie returned with two goblets filled with a light wine.

Nerie blushed and Alasse smiled broadly.

'I see that it was more than just a spoken word then.'

Nerie was shocked at Alasse's statement. Was it that obvious?

Nerie gave Alasse her wine, then sat on the lounger, moving Sumile out the way, who meowed in protest.

'Haldir has spoken to me.' Nerie murmured as she sipped her wine.

Alasse gazed at Nerie and knew Haldir had opened his heart. It was obvious in his eyes as he passed Alasse. They had a sheen on them that Alasse had never seen before.

'He has told you hasn't he?' Alasse whispered, suddenly slightly jealous for she had yet to find a love of her own.

Nerie shifted embarressedly.

'Yes.' Nerie replied.

Alasse placed her hand on Nerie's.

'I am pleased. It is about time you both had love in your lives.'

Nerie looked into Alasse's eyes and knew Alasse spoke from the heart.

'Thank you.'

'Now, tell me all about it!' Alasse declared as she leant back into the chair.

Haldir returned to his apartment in a haze. So much so that he had almost forgotten his sword and quiver that lay outside Nerie's door.

As he walked through his own doorway, he saw Orophin and Rumil lounging in his room, drinking some wine.

They looked up and saw a change in Haldir that they had never seen. Orophil sensed the rich emotions that Haldir had and smiled broadly.

'So you have finally given up ignoring your heart have you?' Orophin murmured as he watched Haldir place his sword and quiver away. His bow was already hanging, having been brought back by Rumil.

Haldir eyed Orophin suspiciously. Was this the beginning of relentless teasing?

Orophin raised his hands in a gesture of peace.

'Nay Haldir, don't look that way. I am happy for you. I truly am.'

Rumil watched with amusement as his eldest brother poured himself some wine and sat down besides him.

'Does that mean you temper will be easier when we return to the borders Haldir?' Rumil asked as he winked at Orophin.

Haldir's lips tightened and Rumil took it as a sign to leave his brother in peace.

'So what do you plan for tonight? Shall we go to the main hall or shall we go to the practice fields. It will be a fine evening. Autumn is my favourite time.' Orophin said, changing the subject.

Haldir looked up. A fine evening? That gave him an idea.

'Nay. I told Nerie I would dine with her tonight. But you can do me a favour.'

Orophin nodded and Haldir continued.

'In four hours go to her and tell her that we dine outside tonight. Bring her to the bottom of the talan stairs and I will meet her there. Now go. I have to bathe for I have months of dirt to scrub off before I am decent. Rumil. Go to the kitchens and ask for a picnic basket with food in it to be brought to my quarters.'

Orophin and Rumil stood and placed their glasses onto the table as they walked towards the door.

'And brothers.'

Orophin and Rumil turned to see a rueful smile on Haldir.

'Thank you for not teasing. I appreciate your help.'

Orophin and Rumil stepped over to Haldir and both hugged him, then bowed and left Haldir alone.

Sighing, Haldir undressed and unplaited his hair. Gods it was so good to look forward to a bath again!

Chapter 19 - The Picnic

The sun was just setting as Orophin and Rumil straightened their tunics before they knocked on Nerie's door. Alasse opened the door to find two tall, handsome elves standing, rather bashfully, on Nerie's porch.

'Yes?' She inquired as a blush moved over her face.

'I have come to ask Nerie to come with me. Haldir wishes to meet Nerie on the forest floor.' said Orophin in westron, his eyes darting to see if he could see Nerie. His eyes opened widely as Nerie came to the door. She seemed so different from when he last saw her. Now, apart from her ears, she had the look of the elf.

'I will come now. Hello Orophin. Hello Rumil. It is nice to see you again. This is Alasse, my friend.' Nerie replied in perfect Sindarin.

Orophin and Rumil bowed in respect, Rumil's eyes never parting from Alasse, who blushed deeper.

Nerie turned and grabbed her cloak as Sumile meowed at her, rubbing herself against Nerie's legs.

'No Sumile. Not tonight. You must stay here.'

Nerie stepped to the doorway and walked past Alasse, who seemed shy in her posture. Nerie noted Rumil's gaze and smiled.

'Come Orophin, let us not keep Haldir waiting. Alasse, are you staying here or are you leaving?'

Alasse broke from her gaze of Rumil and smiled shyly. A loud meow broke into the conversation and Alasse looked downwards to the now fractious Sumile.

'I shall stay Nerie. It seems Sumile may require my company whilst you are away.'

Nerie nodded.

'If I may Nerie. I shall keep Alasse company.' Rumil murmured as Nerie passed him.

Nerie nodded as Orophin grinned, then led Nerie downward to the waiting Haldir.

Rumil stood at the doorway as Alasse twisted a strand of hair in her fingers.

'Can I come in?' He asked, his voice low.

Alasse smiled and stepped backwards.

'Of course! Down Sumile!'

Orophin nodded his leave and left as Haldir gently took Nerie's hand and kissed it.

'Where are we going?' Nerie asked as Haldir took her arm and wrapped it around his. He guided her along the paths of Caras Galadhon.

'A little grove I found by accident some time ago. It is beautiful at the moment. The colours of the trees and foliage make it a truly peaceful place.'

In silence they strolled until the woodland opened up into a small glade. The colours where truly stunning, a rich assortment of colours hung from above as Nerie stood to admire the view. Then she saw the blanket laid on the woodland floor next to the central tree and the basket full of food.

'What is this?' Nerie asked, a shy smile on her face.

'A start to your courtship Nerie. I intend to do it correctly.' Haldir murmured into Nerie's ear and she shivered in response.

Haldir guided Nerie to the blanket and she sat down and watched as Haldir knelt down and began to pick out the items in the basket. Elven sweet treats, cheeses, sweet bread, fruit and a jug of white wine. Haldir poured the wine into the glass goblets and passed one over to Nerie, who took it and nodded her thanks.

Nerie heard faint singing begin from the city and frowned. The last time she had heard that type of singing was when her father died.

'Who is the lament for Haldir?' Nerie asked as she sipped her wine.

Haldir frowned for a second then nodded.

'It is for Mithrandir. He is lost to us.' Haldir replied with sorrow in his voice.

'Mithrandir?' Nerie asked as she placed a hand upon Haldir's.

'You may know him as the Grey Pilgrim or Gandalf the Grey.'

Nerie nodded slightly. Her father had mentioned him years ago in tales of magic and mystery.

'I always thought he was a character from legends.'

Haldir smiled.

'He was real Nerie. He was one of the ancient mages. He protected this land. Now he is gone and I fear the darkness will fall upon us all.'

Haldir picked up some cheese and placed it for Nerie to eat from his fingers. Nerie smiled and took it readily, savoured its flavour then swallowed.

'I do not care what comes Haldir for I know you love me.' She whispered.

Haldir smiled shyly, then leant forwards and kissed Nerie. Nerie leant away, smiling as she did so.

'Shall we eat first?' Nerie giggled.

Haldir laughed as he picked up a white grape and popped it into his mouth.

'Yes. Let's.' he replied, as he chewed.

Night time brought her gown of darkness as Haldir relaxed, his head resting on Nerie's lap. Nerie lay against the tree and her fingers unbraided Haldir's hair, then with slow, sensuous strokes, began to comb his hair with her fingers. Haldir shivered at her touch and sighed deeply. The wine and food had been good but the company was far better. He could feel Nerie's nails as they scraped lightly over his scalp and it made him tingle all over. A slow luxurious smile spread on his face and Nerie chuckled.

'You look like Sumile when she has had something naughty.' Nerie said as her fingers continued to ease the knots out of Haldir's hair.

Haldir opened his mischevious eyes to gaze at Nerie.

'Maybe it's just you can do things to my body that I never expected.'

Nerie snorted with laughter.

'Oh? And what would that be?'

Haldir smiled and took hold of Nerie's hand which was stroking his head.

'This . . .' Haldir murmured as he brought the hand down to his mouth and kissed its palm, his tongue running circles along the sensitive lines of the creases. Nerie gasped as lightening pleasure shot down her arm and deep into her inner core. Haldir smiled more as his tongue traced along one finger, then traced trails along its length and tip. Nerie's toes curled and she squirmed slightly, making Haldir chuckle.

'It seems that I can do things to you as well.' as he kissed her palm again.

Nerie looked at Haldir wryly.

'I don't know what you mean.' Nerie replied, as she watched Haldir's tongue trace a line down to her wrist. As she could feel his warm mouth and tongue roam around the inner wrist, Nerie's core warmed more. Almost driven to distraction by his caresses, Nerie began to breath more deeply. Haldir noted the changed and stopped his teasing. He sat up and crawled backwards so that his back touched Nerie's legs. He then turned and knelt in front of Nerie.

'I love your company but do you know what I enjoy more?' Haldir whispered as his hands ran through Nerie's hair and cradled her face.

'No. What?' Nerie whispered as she gazed at Haldir, his eyes dark.

'I love the way your pupils grow when I am giving you pleasure. It makes your eyes look wild.' Haldir said, then added. ' I like the way your toes curl too.'

Nerie laughed at that, mirth filling her.

'How can you love me when I curl my toes?'

'Because I do.' Haldir replied simply.

He then leant forwards and nuzzled his face against hers. Nerie could feel the Haldir's hot breath against her skin and she shivered. Haldir hovered near her mouth, his eyes locked onto hers, then as his lips met hers, Haldir's fingers stroked Nerie's jaw and throat, then upto to her ears.

Nerie moaned quietly as Haldir's mouth and tongue robbed her of her senses as they left her mouth and made a lazy trail down to her neck, just below her ear. As Haldir gently scraped her neck with his teeth, Nerie gasped and shuddered.

'Haldir-' Nerie began, sensations stopping all speech as Haldir's mouth came upward and gently sucked on the lobe of her ear, then he moved downwards again as Nerie moved her head so that Haldir could gain access to the back of her neck. Haldir smiled as he planted soft kisses along her neck and shoulder muscles. He felt Nerie's hand grasp his tunic and her body seemingly shiver through pleasure. Goosebumps appeared on Nerie's arms as her whole body seemed alive and so sensitive to Haldir's touch.

Haldir leant backwards, Nerie's hands still grasped onto his tunic.

'Is this normal for elvish courtship?' Nerie panted, trying to get her emotions to settle.

Haldir chuckled as he kissed her.

'Yes.' He murmured to her mouth. 'I think so.'

An owl passed overhead, hooting as it flew across the night sky. Haldir looked upwards and saw it was growing late and sighed.

'We must go back. I have an early meeting with Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn tomorrow.'

Nerie pulled Haldir to her, her lips hungry for his touch and after a few seconds, Haldir returned that kiss willingly but then pulled back.

'You are too much of a temptation.' Haldir chuckled as he stood up, hand outstretched to help Nerie, who took it and stood.

Nerie picked up the blanket as Haldir picked the packed hamper basket and they both walked back to their talans. As they arrived at Nerie's dwelling, laughter came from inside. Haldir raised an eyebrow and with a smile opened the door and walked in to find Alasse and Rumil cuddled together. Rumil had a piece of twine to which Sumile was attacking. Their laugher stopped as Nerie and Haldir appeared.

'Oh. Nerie. Haldir. Your back.' Alasse said embarressdly as she untangled herself from Rumil.

Nerie laughed at the sight knowing full well that Alasse would be on the end of the questions tomorrow morning.

'Goodbye Alasse. Rumil. Thank you for looking after Sumile for me.'

Sheepishly, Rumil and Alasse nodded and left quickley, leaving a very confused Sumile.

Haldir placed the basket down and Nerie placed the blanket on top of it Haldir stretched upwards and sighed deeply. Today had been a good day and Haldir felt more content that he had done in years. Nerie watched with amusement. It was so nice to see Haldir relaxed. Haldir, his sigh over, placed his arms downwards and smiled gently at Nerie.

'I guess it is time I left also.' Haldir said as Nerie came over to him and wrapped her arms around his waist.

'You don't have to.' Nerie whispered as she looked upwards to Haldir as he began to chuckle.

'You will be the undoing of me Nerie. Nay, I must go. I have that meeting remember. If I stay I would not want to leave in the morning.'

Nerie smiled.

'All right. Will I see you tomorrow?'

Haldir nodded then kissed Nerie.

'Aye my love. I will find you, or you will find me.' He murmured as he kissed her once more, then stepped back and turned, picked up the basket and walked to the door. Nerie opened it to watch Haldir begin to depart, then he stopped, stole one more kiss, then left. A last glance to see Nerie in the doorway of her home.

Chapter 20 - Heart to Heart

Haldir sat alongside his brothers with Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel in their private chambers.

'I fear that the time of man is coming sooner than we anticipated. Sauron grows ever stronger and with Saruman by his side, the world of men will require all the help we can offer.' Lady Galadriel said, her fingers resting on a cup of cold water.

Haldir frowned.

'What does that have to do with me my Lady.' Haldir asked.

'You are best of our warriors Haldir. We require you to train near a hundred of your best elves. Others will arrive soon from Rivendell. Lord Elrond is sending his people to the Sacred Isles apart from himself and those who come to us. You have the most experience, you and your brothers, to train these elves to our standards.'

Haldir shook his head.

'You ask too much!'

Galadriel eyes turned dark with anger.

'Are you disobeying me Haldir? I expected more from you.'

Haldir lowered his head in supplication.

'Nay Lady. It just seems a huge task to do by so few.'

Lord Celeborn smiled.

'We have faith in you Haldir. Great faith in you and both you, Rumil and Orophin. Split yourselves into three groups. One hand to hand fighting, one sword and one archery. Between you, you will create a mighty force to fight alongside man. But we do not have much time.' Lord Celeborn said firmly.

Haldir nodded and looked at his brothers. They glanced at him and shrugged.

'We will do as you ask. When do you want us to begin?' Haldir said.

'As soon as you gather your galadhrim elves together. The Rivendell elves will be here in eight days. In two months you, Haldir, and part the group leave for Helm's Deep.' Lord Celeborn replied.

Haldir nodded again and stood. Orophin and Rumil followed. Bowing in respect, the three elves strode away to the nearest steps, then they stopped.

'What is going on?' Rumil hissed.

Haldir shook his head.

'I do not know but what ever it is, it cannot be good. This bodes ill my brothers. I can sense it. I fear my death may soon be at hand.' Haldir said darkly.

'You jest surely?' Orophin began then saw Haldir's face.

'You truly believe that you will die at Helm's deep?' Orophin whispered, his hand touching Haldir's arm.

Haldir looked downward and did not answer. Orophin frowned.

'Well don't go Haldir. Rumil or I shall go in your stead.'

Haldir shook his head.

'Nay brother. I must go. It is my duty as Captain of the Galadhrin. Now come, standing here will not get our lord or ladies orders done. Rumil, get all the elves that are on leave from the borders. Orophin, send messages to the borders to send those who you think would be best for this task but make sure you replace those who come with others. You both know the warrior elves as well as I and who would be most suitable. I will meet you on the practice fields.'

Orophin and Rumil nodded, then left Haldir alone on the talan steps. He needed to talk to Nerie.

Haldir found her eventually, with Sumile and Alasse, teaching the children Westron in the forest. Her Sindarin was so flawless now that Haldir had to hold for a second and realise she was human and not elf. Haldir smiled slightly, then realising his duty, walked towards her. The children stumbled over their words as they saw the imposing figure of Haldir, March Warden stride towards them. Nerie turned to see him also and smiled, then saw his face. The smile vanished.

'What is wrong?'

Haldir eyed the chidren then looked at Nerie.

'Can we go somewhere? I need to speak with you.'

Nerie looked at Alasse who nodded and Nerie walked with Haldir away from the children. The sounds of Westron could be heard to begin behind them as they walked away.

Haldir didn't stop until he knew no one else was near, then drew Nerie to him in an all embracing hug. The sense of his own death unsettled him deeply.

Nerie frowned, concerned as Haldir was acting most strangely. Hugging him tightly in return, she looked up to see Haldir's eyes closed.

'Haldir? You're scaring me. What is it? What's happened?'

Haldir opened his eyes and looked down onto Nerie.

'In two months I must leave. Sauron has grown stronger and the elves have agreed to honour the old allegiance that once held between man and elf.'

Nerie felt cold to the core.

'I don't understand!' Nerie whispered, fear robbing her of her voice.

'It means Nerie, my beloved, I cannot court you in the manner of an elf would like. I will leave in two months and I may not return. When I was very young there was a great battle in which men and elf fought side by side to rid this land of Sauron. Now we must do it again.'

'No!' Nerie choked as she clung to Haldir. 'No Haldir. You promised. You would always be with me.'

Haldir smiled gently.

'Aye my love. I did.'

Nerie stood still.

'But you have made your choice.' Nerie whispered hoarsly, hot tears streaming down her face. 'You will not court me. You will leave.'

Haldir sighed as he pulled Nerie closer to him and sought her mouth with his. Nerie clung to him as if her life depended on it and Haldir could feel her heart beating so fast against his chest. As they broke the kiss, Haldir whispered,

'I still love you. That has not changed. I need you Nerie. More than anything in my life I need you. You are my waking breathing, my sleeping dream. I cannot live without you.'

'But you have to leave.' Nerie replied as she touched Haldir's face. Haldir nodded.

Nerie sighed in resignation.

'Well, we have two months. Let us share what we can of each other before you leave.' she whispered as she lost herself in Haldir's blue eyes.

'Can I come to you?' Haldir murmured as he kissed Nerie on her still wet eyes.

'Yes.' Nerie replied, her hands roaming over Haldir's back.

Haldir kissed her deeply, his tongue tracing her teeth and palate. Nerie groaned and pressed herself into Haldir. As he broke away he smiled gently.

'Then I go to my task for I know you are waiting for me. I am to train the Galadhrim in the arts of war. I must go now before I am missed.'

Nerie nodded, then stole a final kiss from Haldir as he leant back to leave.

Nerie watched him stride back into the mists of the wood, a final glance at her before he was gone. As he disapeared, Nerie collapsed onto the tree and wept.

As Haldir returned to the practice feilds, Lord Celeborn was waiting for him.

'I want you to accompany the fellowship with Lady Galadriel to our boats on the river.' Lord Celeborn ordered, his voice harder than he intended but was he was expecting Haldir to be amongst the elves already gathered on the feilds.

Haldir hung his head, shamed that he had angered Lord Celeborn.

'Yes my lord.' he said.

'Go to the palace. They await you there.'

Haldir nodded and ran to the talans that held the palace. He panted slightly as he ran up the steps to find the fellowship and Lady Galadriel waiting.

'I am at your will Lady.' Haldir said as he bowed.

He then walked behind Lady Galadriel as they made their way through the woods towards the boats. Haldir could still sense the ring and shuddered. It took most of the day to guide them, and as they prepared their belongings and climbed into the boats. Haldir assisted as best he could.

Finally, the group set out, gifts in hand and food aplenty as Haldir watched them depart, paddling strongly along the river. In his heart, he wished them well, for he knew if the fellowship failed, then there would be no hope for middle earth.

Waiting for Galadriel to return, Haldir took a couple of bites of Lembas and sipped some of the water from the travelling pouches. As he sat, he heaved a huge sigh. Thoughts went back to Nerie and what would happen if he left. Lady Galadriel stood silently, hearing Haldir's thoughts. Feeling compassion for her captain but knowing that he had a job to do, Galadriel walked deliberately loud to ensure Haldir knew she was coming.

'Come Haldir. Let us return. Time is short for us all.'

Haldir wondered what Lady Galadriel meant as they walked back. Did she know something that would confirm his fears?

It was well past midnight when they returned. Haldir bowed to Lady Galadriel as they came to the palace.

'Thank you Haldir. Go get some rest. You have a busy day tomorrow on the archery feilds.'

Haldir nodded and left.
