Chapter 11 - Sleeping Angel
Haldir slowly awoke with a comforting sound in his ear. Lub dub . . . lub dub . . . lub dub . . . lub dub. Warmth seeped into his consciousness as his pillow moved rhythmically. Wondering if he was still dreaming, Haldir lay still, his eyes still shut and he engorged his senses. He heard a faint sound of breathing and bird song outside. With a slight frown of question, Haldir opened his eyes and awaited for his eyes to focus. He felt relieved to see that he was in his own room in Lothlorien. Brittle winter sun shone through the doorways out to the balcony. Haldir felt the warmth of his pillow and slowly, gently raised himself upwards so that he leant on his elbow, wincing as he moved due to his body aching severely all over. As he did so, Haldir saw his pillow was Nerie. His frown deepened. Why was she here? What happened last night? With relief, Haldir noticed Nerie was still dressed and then something glittered around her neck. Haldir's free hand gently leant over and picked up the pendant and instantly recognized it as the watcher's pendant Galadriel had given him so many years ago.
It was then that Haldir remembered the Glade of Remembrance and the fight he undertook. Then he understood. Nerie had been his watcher to bring him back to reality. Haldir remembered the words he heard and realized it was Nerie.
He gazed at the sleeping form, tears filling his eyes, with a new awe. Never had someone outside Lothlorien knew Haldir closely and now this female human knew everything there was to know. Feeling emotionally raw and physically exhausted, Haldir groaned as he moved to get more comfortable. Nerie stirred in her sleep and Haldir held his breath. Nerie slept on as Haldir studied her face. Long blonde eye lashes edged her sleeping eyes, Nerie's blonde hair untangled from the plait she had put it in. Haldir watched as her full lips allowed warm air to pass as she slept, the pinkness of which reminded Haldir of summer woodland roses. Nerie's skin was tanned by the sun from years of living outside and her nose was elegant and refined. Haldir looked downwards to her neck and shoulders noting the muscles but it was covered by the softest skin. Nerie wore a Lothlorien gown made of the thickest velvet for winter wear. The colour was that of a summer sky, rich and blue. Nerie's left arm was outstretched where it had been around Haldir's shoulders. Her other was draped over her stomach.
Haldir shifted again and cursed himself as his movement awoke Nerie. She blinked several times as though confused to where she was, then her face turned to Haldir and she smiled gently.
'Good morning Haldir. Are you feeling all right?'
Haldir smiled, his face sore and his body screamed at him with pain.
'I am Nerie and it seems I have a lot to thank you for.' Haldir whispered.
Nerie blushed and lowered her eyes.
Haldir sat up slowly, allowing his pain to govern his movements, his lips thin with effort.
Nerie sat up and watched Haldir move to the edge of the bed very slowly and stiffly. No fluidity in movement came from Haldir and Nerie knew that Haldir must be in great pain.
Nerie quickly moved from her side of the bed and ran around so that she faced Haldir. Haldir looked upwards into the worried face of Nerie, her blue eyes wide with compassion.
Haldir ignored his pain as he slowly reached upwards and touched the pendant.
'I don't know what to say Nerie. Words fail me. I don't know you. You are neither kith or kin. I do not understand why.'
Nerie smiled gently as she crouched down so her head was lower than Haldir's, his handing dropping to his lap as Nerie's hands were placed upon Haldir's knees for balance.
'Lady Galadriel told me that you could help me heal Haldir. To do that I had to help you. It was the least I could do as you saved my life remember?' Nerie began gently.
Haldir nodded and Nerie continued.
'We are both lost souls who need time to heal. It is a lonely journey so a good companion who knows what the other feels is never a bad thing. I have no one Haldir. I lost everything and everyone that I loved and cared for.'
Haldir looked down at Nerie's face as tears ran down her cheeks as fresh pain tore through her. Haldir raised a hand and softly reached out to her cheeks and wiped the tears.
'Haldir, I feel so very alone. Lady Galadriel tells me you know this also and that you feel the same.' Nerie whispered.
Haldir felt his own tears form and he tried to blink them away but they fell onto his cheeks accusingly. No longer would he be able to hide away from his emotions. No more could he hide.
'Aye. I know.' Haldir replied hoarsely.
Nerie watched this strong elf, one who had dived into the deepest lake to save her and now here he sat before, tears running down his face looking torn and dejected.
Nerie held out her hands and Haldir grasped then with such force as is his life deepened on her touch. Haldir pulled Nerie towards him and held her close and sobbed. Nerie, cried also for loss of love and family but a glimmer of hope shone in her soul as it did in Haldir's and each realized this as they held onto each other.

Chapter 12 - Healing Hearts, Torn Souls
Later, they lay side by side on the bed, tears past shed as they held each other for comfort. Haldir rested his chin on Nerie's head as he heard her sniff quietly into his chest. Haldir hadn't held someone so close since his brothers were younger and he was the giver of comfort but because he was the eldest, it seemed to Haldir he had to heal his own hurts but this time this comfort was mutual. Both gave and received. His arms encircled Nerie's body and for once Haldir enjoyed the closeness as his hands stroked the fabric of her dress. He had never had a female in his life, looking only for action and escape. The females of Lothlorien would have got too near and would have broken his protective shell but now it was broken and Haldir wasn't scared anymore.
Haldir sighed deeply as his soul settled for now, its rages spent in tears. Raw as his emotions were he could feel a deep friendship bonding between Nerie and himself. Haldir savored in the closeness. It was something he had denied himself for so long and now that he had lost his fears, he felt at peace. Gently, Haldir kissed Nerie's head and then held her against him closer than before.
Nerie felt the softest of kisses on the top of her head as Haldir's arms wrapped themselves her tighter than before. Nerie snuggled, her head onto Haldir's chest and she heard his heart beating regular and true. Comforting in his warmth and nearness, Nerie lay still, not wanting to move. Her nose ran as the tears eased and she sniffed gently. The hole in her heart and soul was still there but for the time being it was tolerable.
Eventually, having to raise her hand to wipe her face, Nerie leant backwards slightly and Haldir released his gentle hold he had to let Nerie move.
Nerie wiped her face thoroughly with both of her hands, then looked up to see Haldir watching her and smiled at him. Then, not wanting to move from where she was, Nerie placed her head back on Haldir's chest and closed her eyes.
Haldir watched Nerie as she wiped her face then look upwards. Her eyes and nose where red from crying but then she smiled at Haldir with complete trust and to secure that fact, Nerie then placed her head against Haldir's chest yet again. Haldir breathed deeply, new emotions filling his very being like sand in an empty bottle. Hope, love, compassion and love of life. Haldir had never really known any of these emotions and though they felt alien they felt so right. Haldir once again wrapped his arms around Nerie securing her form to his, a small smile on his sore and bruised face.
They lay like that for some time until Nerie's stomach grumbling disturbed them both.
'I think I am going to have to get something to eat.' Nerie mumbled into Haldir's chest, reluctant to move.
'Hmm.' Haldir replied, his eyes closed.
Nerie smiled to herself then pushed away from Haldir and sat up. Her stomach grumbled loudly again. Nerie sighed as she sat up and looked around Haldir's room, her hands automatically going to her hair to rebraid. On the table was a bowl of fruit of winter apples and pears.
Braiding finished, Nerie slid off the bed as Haldir turned over and watched her. Nerie walked over to the bowl and picked up an apple. She sniffed it at first but it felt firm and fresh and with a satisfying crunch, Nerie bit deeply into it. It was sweet and juicy and Nerie ate greedily.
Haldir groaned loudly as he moved to sit on the edge of the bed. When he lay still the pains were bearable but when he moved they were intolerable. The noise made Nerie turn in concern and with some speed she came to Haldir's side as his legs slipped over the edge of the bed. His head rested on Nerie's chest as his feet hit the floor.
'Ow.' Haldir hissed, the jolt of the movement brought fresh pain.
Nerie supported Haldir as best she could. Just then there was a gentle knock on the door.
'Come in.' Haldir said, his voice trembling from the pain.
Lady Galadriel entered the room and a warming light seem to follow her.
She gazed at them both for a moment, Haldir's arm resting around Nerie's waist for support and Nerie's arm around his shoulders.
'It is good to see you Haldir, and you Nerie. Did the glade do it's work Haldir.'
Haldir looked up into the face of the Lady of Light and heard in his soul
Yes, I can see that it has. You look eased now. The torments are gone.
Haldir nodded slightly for fear of moving too much.
Galadriel came towards them, then knelt down in front of Haldir. In her hand was a bottle of shimmering liquid, a hint of purple in its mix.
'Drink this Haldir for it will ease the pain you physically feel.'
Haldir slowly sat upwards from his slumped stance and gently took the bottle from the Lady Galadriel's hand. With a reassuring nod from Galadriel, Haldir placed the bottle to his lips and drank deeply. As he did, a warmth spread over his body like he had been dowsed by water and as it fled through his body, he felt the pain being taken away. Removing his hand from Nerie, Haldir slowly stood, shakily at first, then more strongly as the mixture took hold. The pain had eased and a smile spread along Haldir's face as he stretched upwards to release stiff muscles. He sighed deeply as his arms came back to his sides, then nodded deeply to Galadriel.
'My thanks my Lady. I feel much better.'
Galadriel nodded, a small smile on her face then her attention turned to Nerie.
'Nerie. I have found a place amongst the palace rooms for you to stay with us. You and I must discuss what it is you wish to do.'
Nerie nodded, trepidation filling her and making her shake.
Galadriel smiled again.
'You haven't changed your mind have you?'
Nerie shook her head.
'No my lady, it's just so much has happened over the last few days that I feel quite lost.'
'I understand.' Galadriel's attention turned back to Haldir who had been watching the conversation.
'Haldir. Since Nerie needs a guide for a while and Alasse has other duties to perform, would you do the honour? She would stay here for the moment for you still need someone with you.'
Haldir bowed low and as he came upwards again, his eyes never deviated from Nerie.
'It would be my honour my lady.'
'Good! Well, I shall leave you in peace. Nerie. I will come to find you here a few days and take you to your new rooms. Haldir, rest my dear friend. I will send food up to your apartment. Nerie can I have the pendant?'
Nerie quickly removed it from around her neck and gave it to Galadriel's waiting hand.
Galadriel nodded in thanks then turned and left.
Haldir waited for a few seconds as the door closed, then reached upwards stretching each muscle in his body.
'Gods that feels so so good.' Haldir said, strain in his voice as he stretched.
Nerie watched in amusement, took another apple then sat on the side of the bed.
Haldir relaxed, then realizing he too was hungry, took an apple and sat besides Nerie and began to eat.
Another knock at the door disturbed them.
'Come!' Haldir shouted.
The door opened and Alasse came in carrying a large tray with covered bowls. Silently she placed them onto the table then taking the bowl of water and bloodied cloth that had been used the previous night, Alasse left. The smell of food filled the room and Nerie's mouth watered. Haldir looked at Nerie as she looked at him, then in one fluid motion both moved towards the bowls laughing like children. They sat cross legged in front of the table. Wonderful spices filled Nerie's nose as Haldir carefully lifted up the covers of the bowls. Some of Haldir's favourite dishes were here. Waterfowl and wild onion, braised vegetables, wild oats in butter and wild garlic with sour soda bread. For a dessert stewed winter apples with honey.
Taking one of the two empty bowls, Haldir passed it onto Nerie. Then taking the serving spoon, placed equal amounts of the savory dishes into each of the bowls. Nerie watched anxiously, her stomach now seemingly turning itself inside out. Gods! she felt hungry.
Soon, they both ate with until both were full.
'I don't think I could eat another thing.' Nerie moaned as she leant backwards onto her hands.
Haldir raised an eyebrow and smiled.
'What, not even for the stewed apples?'
Nerie looked at the bowl and decided that she may have room for that.
'OK, maybe that.' Nerie conceded leaning forwards and Haldir laughed gently as he gave her a fresh spoon.
Finally all the bowls were empty and the bread gone.
Nerie sighed as she leant backwards yet again.
'I really really can't eat anymore. I am so full, I am fit to burst!'
Haldir smiled as he placed the bowls onto the tray.
'I need to walk some of this off. Would you care for a walk Nerie?'
Nerie groaned again but smiled in return then her look turned to consternation. Her bladder was telling her important messages. She found the personal midden last night in her chambers but she didn't know if Haldir had one.
'Haldir. Before we go . . . I need to -' Nerie paused, embarrassment apparent on her face. Haldir laughed gently.
'Through there.' he indicated with a hand and Nerie followed the direction gratefully. She found a room with a deep basin, big enough for one person to relax and stretch into. Then she saw the midden and saw release. She then came out of the side room and picked up her discarded cloak that she had left on the chair the previous night and then turned to see Haldir already awaiting, his burgundy cloak clasped around his neck.
As they left his chambers, the chill wind gently wound its way around the tree tops making them rustle. Afternoon was upon them and the sunlight was already fading. Nerie shivered slightly against the chill for Haldir's rooms where warm. Snow lay on the banisters which surrounded the walkways but the walkways were clear. They walked in silence at first, at ease with each others company. Haldir guided Nerie to his favourite place. Up past the palace and into the very tree tops itself. As they climbed the final steps, Nerie gasped. It seemed the whole of middle earth lay before her. Night time was coming fast across the sky as it filled with purples and blackness beyond. Nerie cleared the snow from the border and rested against it. She then heard a deep sigh and turned to Haldir who was standing next to her, his face one of peace as he looked over his beloved Lothlorien.
'Despite everything, you would not leave here would you.?
Nerie's soft voice brought Haldir out of his own private reveries and he shook his head.
'When the time is comes, I will go west with the rest of the elves.'
Nerie frowned at the answer then Haldir continued seeing an explanation was required.
'The elves are leaving middle earth Nerie. It is our time to go to the west and to live on the Sacred Isle. We are the first born of this world and long have we been here, but now it is now the time of man.'
'But, that would mean I would be left alone again.' Nerie nearly shouted, fear gripping her heart as she took a step backwards.
'No.' Haldir replied simply and added. 'If you wish, you could come with me.'
Nerie stood looking at Haldir, her mouth open in shock.
'You would do that Haldir? You would take a human with you to your sacred Isle?'
'No, I would not take a human with me.' Haldir replied, humour in his voice.
'But I would take a trusted friend. Understand Nerie that you are as trusted to me as my brothers are.'
Nerie gasped at this. She had never imagined that over the past few days, so much could have happened and she could feel such loss, and now, she wasn't alone anymore. The deep tear at the core of her soul screamed in agony and pleasure of knowing she was not alone.
Haldir watched carefully. The silence worried him.
'Do you see me as a friend Nerie?'
Nerie's bottom lip quivered as tears spilled down her cheeks and she walked forwards to the now astonished Haldir and hugged him. This time, Haldir did not stiffen or shut the comfort out. Haldir smiled and wrapped his arms around her slight form for her top of her head came to his collarbone. Then a question came out of his mind that he felt he had to ask. How long?
'Nerie? How old are you?'
Nerie coughed, choking back tears for such an absurd question at a time like this! She looked upwards and leant back a little but Haldir's arms still rested around her.
'I know you are much older than me Haldir.' Nerie replied with a smile on her lips.
Haldir laughed, his soul touched by such nonsense but he repeated.
'How old are you?'
Nerie smiled, almost shyly.
'I will be of twenty one summers when the next summer comes.'
Haldir nodded, then enjoying the warmth and the comfort, he pulled Nerie close to him. Long enough!

Chapter 13 - Final Release
They stood together until it was quite dark and the lights glittered amongst the dwellings and walkways of the Mellyrn trees and the city of Calas Galadhon that lay below. Nerie had never seen anything so beautiful before and her eyes drank in the wonders before her. How she wished her father could have seen this! Knots tightened in her stomach as she thought that and Nerie sighed deeply. Nerie felt suddenly so lonely as reality hit her that she would never ever see her people or her father again. Despite all the love and care given to her by the elves she would always be alone. Even now, as she stood next to Haldir she felt alone. Deep depression hit her as she saw things that she would never share with her family and friends. Never more would she hunt or weave. Never more would she help with adding life to the tribe by helping with the births. No more children to look after or play with. Though Nerie had never married or paired, she felt she had a huge family and she took her responsibilities to heart. Her father had taught her well that there should be no weakness in a tribe for that weakness would kill them all. Nerie wished that time would turn back. Nerie had begged to her gods silently to bring them back, that she would do anything but the gods had ignored her. At that point, Nerie wished she had never survived. She wanted to with her father on the other side. She missed him so much. Nerie buried her head into Haldir as the final pain took her over as a scream issued from her lips out of frustration and grief.
Haldir held on tightly, not knowing the cause of such a reaction but guessing well. Nerie's legs went weak as she cried out in deep distress and Haldir moved quickly and picked up Nerie.
'Let me be! Let me die Haldir! Nerie pleaded as Haldir walked over to a bench and sat down, Nerie resting on his lap.
Haldir bit on his bottom lip but just held Nerie hoping comfort would ease the pain.
'Let me die. Let me die.' Nerie repeatedly whispered in-between the sobs until Haldir had to answer.
'Why do you want to die?'
'I . . . want . . . my . . . dada! Nerie sobbed hard and deep.
Haldir had no knowledge of loss of kin and was deeply upset to see Nerie so torn. Knowing that nothing could be done to ease her pain, Haldir lifted Nerie up like a father held a child and preceded to make his way back to his rooms. The guard opened the door, a quizzical look on his face which Haldir ignored as he walked in and placed Nerie onto his bed. She instantly curled up into a ball. Haldir, concern in his eyes, unclasped his cloak and threw it on the chair as he sat on the bed beside Nerie and unrolled her body so that she faced him still crying.
Haldir gently moved the hairs away from her face, then began to stroke her hair and face.
'Shh.' he repeated as Nerie sobbed.
'You should have let me die Haldir. I wouldn't be a burden to you or your people and I would be with dada. Why couldn't have they taken me! I want to die!' Nerie screamed into the air then her eyes turned, full of hate to Haldir.
'You saved me! You have cursed me Haldir! You!' screaming, hands reaching out to hit him.
Haldir took each arm with his hands and gently held them as Nerie fought him. Not a word did he speak as Nerie played out her emotions so that eventually she lay spent on his bed, sobbing quietly.
'I saved you because your father asked me Nerie.' Haldir whispered, his hands still on Nerie's arms but now to stroke, not to hold.
'I want my dada.' Nerie whispered quietly, tears subsiding.
Haldir looked Nerie at compassion. Galadriel was right. Both of them had a long road to heal.
Haldir reached up and began to stroke Nerie's head and face. Tears spent had fallen downwards to her neck and beyond. Haldir sighed deeply at such pain.
Nerie opened her eyes to see Haldir there for her. Feeling ashamed at her outburst, Nerie placed her left hand onto Haldir's as it rested on her shoulder.
'I'm sorry Haldir. I just want my dada. I saw the beautiful scenery and I wanted dada to see it. I realized then that never would he be by my side.'
Haldir smiled gently and taking her hand, he pressed it against his cheek.
'I may not be dada Nerie but whatever happens, I will be here. Besides, elves believe that those who have passed are still with us. They can see all. But I am here now.'
Nerie saw such gentleness in those eyes.
'I know.' Nerie replied and sniffed.
Haldir smiled, then let go of her hand and turned, stood and walked over to the table. The tray and bowls had been cleared away and a small jug of wine sat there with two goblets. Haldir poured some of the wine into the goblets, turned and walked over to the bed where Nerie now sat. Nerie took the offered goblet and sipped its contents. The wine had been mulled and its flavour strong but soothing. Haldir sat next to Nerie and watched her for a second.
'Nerie? Tell me about your father and your life on the plains?'
Nerie's stomach hardened slightly and Haldir sensed it.
'If you would rather not . . .' Haldir started but Nerie interrupted.
'No it's all right. I don't mind.'
Haldir settled down as Nerie began to explain the reason why her father had come to Lothlorien. He had come to warn of the increasing presence of Orcs on the plains. Something he had not seen in all his years and something he had not heard of for several hundred. Haldir nodded, grateful for the knowledge Nerie had told him. Then Nerie told him of her life and how she had grown up with the tribe. How life was hard in winter as they followed the elk herds but how wonderful it was in spring and summer when plants came to life and food was plentiful. Nerie explained that she had never paired or married though there was a man she had met who belonged to another tribe but he left and Nerie didn't want to leave with him. Nerie told him of her love of the children and Haldir sat grim faced as the memory of the dead children at his feet crossed his mind. Nerie noticed the changed in Haldir's face and stopped.
'Haldir. Do not blame yourself. You did all you could.'
Haldir nodded and replied.
'Aye I know. It's just I had taught some of the children some Sindarin. I remember well how they used to call to us in the trees in our language. Their attempts made me smile and now they are gone.'
Nerie nodded at this. No more would she cuddle up with the children and tell them stories, or have snowball fights or run along the fields trying to catch the butterflies.
With that Nerie sighed and stretched. She felt very tired and dirty and wanted to wash for she was tired of crying. She gave her now empty goblet to Haldir and slid to the edge of the bed.
'Can I use your washroom. I need to wash.' Nerie asked as she took her cloak off.
Haldir stood at once and placed the goblets back onto the table.
'Of course, would you like a bath?'
Nerie smiled.
'I would love one.' but the Nerie remembered her clothing. She had none!
'My clothes - 'Nerie began as she watched Haldir pick up a large basket next to the door.
'I think these are what you require.' Haldir said as he placed the basket on the chair.
'You sort out what you want and I shall fill your bath.'
Haldir left Nerie to sort out the clothing. In the basket were the dresses Alasse had brought Nerie the day before. Her own clothing had been taken away. Nerie pulled out the heavy dresses and laid them down on the bed. There was nothing suitable to sleep in. Nerie rummaged around until right at the bottom was a pale green under dress made of the lightest cotton. Nerie pulled out and examined it. Though she could see the shadow of her hand if held against the light, it would have to do.
'Your bath is ready.' Haldir called.
Nerie grabbed her cotton gown and walked into the room. The air steamed as the bath lay full and inviting. Besides it was soft soap made from soap wort and scented from woodland flowers. Haldir was placing some large sheets he used as towels onto the rail next to the bath. Nerie walked over then realised she had another problem. Her dress had been laced up the back!
'Um.' Nerie started. 'Haldir? Could you undo my lacing for me?'
Haldir turned, a smile of amusement on his face.
'Of course. Turn round.' He ordered gently as he watched Nerie turn away from him. His strong lithe fingers made short work on the laces and Nerie turned, her arms across her chest to save her modestly from the dress falling to her feet.
'Enjoy your bath. If you need me. . .'Haldir chuckled as he left the room and shut the door behind him.
Nerie waited a few seconds then let the dress slide downwards, quickly followed by the under dress. Kicking her soft elven shoes off, she then walked to the bath and gently stepped into the water. It was very hot and it took a few minutes for it to be comfortable. Nerie ducked her head under the water, blowing bubbles as she did so. Then she came upwards, wiped her face and with soap in hand began to wash her hair and body. Afterwards, Nerie just lay in the bath, relaxing into the water. She then realised that the bandage was wet on her right hand, and with care, she undid the bandages to assess the wound. As the dressing fell away, Nerie could see a dark pink area where the cut had been but that was it. No blood could be seen. Nerie dropped the dressings onto the floor and soaked again.
Soon the water was chilled and Nerie got out and dried her hair then wrapped the cloth around her head. Then with the other, she dried off her body. Feeling thoroughly clean she dried her hair again to get the last drops out then Nerie dressed into the pale green shift and carrying her dirty clothing, she walked out of the washroom, the wood seemingly warm under her feet.
Haldir was cleaning and sharpening one of his swords as Nerie came into the main room. A smudge of cleansing oil lay across his nose and cheek as he looked up.
'Feel better?'
Nerie smiled almost shyly, as she placed her dirty clothes into the basket and walked over to where Haldir sat, grabbing the over blanket from the bed as she passed and placed it around her shoulders. Nerie then sat on the bed, her legs drawn upwards as she pulled the blanket further round.
'Yes. Much. Er . . Haldir?' Nerie replied, pointing to her nose.
Haldir frowned then realised Nerie was indicating to his nose. He put his sword and cloth down and wiped his face then looked at the hand. He then laughed.
'I think I need a wash.' Haldir smiled as he stood. With a slight bow, Haldir disappeared into the washroom and Nerie could hear the water flowing yet again. With the sounds of washing in the background Nerie spotted some books on the shelves that stood at the end of the bed. Getting up, Nerie padded over to the shelves and took one. She then walked over to the bed, sat then pushed herself up so she snuggled into the pillows. As she opened the book she could easily tell it wasn't a dialect that she knew but the writing was beautiful. Moving the pages, she looked at the script and the pictures and so engrossed was she that she didn't hear Haldir come out of the room.
'I didn't know you could read Sindarin?' Haldir murmured as he walked over to where Nerie sat. Nerie looked up to see Haldir clean but with wet hair and wearing a light grey elven tunic and under breeches. The braids where gone from his hair and Haldir held a comb in his hands. He sat and began to comb his long pale gold hair with a look of mild amusement on his face.
'I can't Haldir but it is such a beautiful language to look at.' Nerie replied reproachfully.
Haldir felt proud of his heritage and as he finished brushing his hair, he gave the comb to Nerie who swapped it for the book.
'What is the book about Haldir?' Nerie asked as she took the comb and began to ease the knots from her hair.
'It is a tale of an elf who finds true love.'
Nerie's eye brows raised, then with slight mischief asked.
'Do you have a true love Haldir?'
Haldir smiled, truly amused.
'Nay Nerie. I have yet to find my true love.'
'Aren't you worried you may never find her?' Nerie asked, her hair combed so she gave the comb back to Haldir who took it from her and replied.
'Nay. I am immortal. There is only two things that can kill an elf and that is through battle or through matters of the heart. Neither of which I can see forthcoming soon. So I have all the time in the world.'
Nerie smiled as Haldir stood and placed the comb and book onto the table and sheathed his sword. When he turned he saw Nerie nearly asleep, her head nodding and her eyes half closed.
'Come, move over Nerie. Let us rest.'
Nerie smiled gently as she moved over to the other side of the bed and allowed Haldir onto it. Haldir slipped beneath the sheets which felt chilled.
He then indicated to Nerie to join him. Nerie undraped the blanket from her shoulders, placed on the bed and climbed under the sheets. From the warmth of the blanket to the coldness of the sheets was a shock and Nerie shivered as she lay on her side. Feeling the shiver, Haldir turned over and moved closed to Nerie. Moulding himself around her form, he placed a protective arm around her waist. To make himself more comfortable, he snuggled a bit so that Nerie raised her head allowing Haldir's other arm under her neck. Finally comfortable, they lay quietly, the heat from both heating the sheets to a comforting warmth. Haldir placed his head against Nerie's and smelled the soap she had used. He sighed in relief. It had been a traumatic day for them both. He could only hope the following days would be easier. He could feel Nerie relax into him and her breathing slowed into sleeping. Haldir smiled, then closed his eyes as he enjoyed the comfort and warmth.

Chapter 14 - The New Skill
Several days later Galadriel came to Haldir's rooms and found Haldir teaching Sindarin to Nerie. Both were resting on the lounge chair, Haldir sat as Nerie lay, her legs over Haldir's lap. Nerie swung round and stood as did Haldir as Galadriel came into the room. Nerie looked at Haldir for support. He nodded and Nerie turned to face Lady Galadriel.
''Quel re arwenamin. Hama sinome. Malia ten' yulna?' Nerie said, her voice showing nervousness as she indicated to the pitcher of water.
Galadriel smiled warmly.
'Diala lle Nerie.' Galadriel replied as she sat on the now vacant part of the chair that Nerie had been sitting on, then switching to westron added.
'I have come to take you to your new home.'
Nerie stopped pouring the water and looked upward to Haldir, concern and worry on her face.
'Ah. . . about the rooms.' Haldir began.
Galadriel gazed at Haldir, a small raise of an eyebrow showing her interest.
'It's just that, well, Nerie and I have become close friends. She helps me heal my lady as I her. We have become accustomed in sharing the last few days.'
Haldir paused as Nerie gave Lady Galadriel her goblet of water.
'Please continue Haldir.' Galadriel murmured as she sipped the water, her eyes never drawing from Haldir.
Haldir blushed at the gaze then went on.
'I was . . . well we . . . was wondering if we might share this apartment for the time being.'
Galadriel smiled gently.
'But what happens when your leave here is through Haldir. Who will share with Nerie then?'
'I am happy to share with Haldir my lady.'Nerie interrupted. ' I am happy to be by myself providing I can find things to occupy my mind during the day. Loneliness is my only problem and something I must face.'
Galadriel nodded, sighed, then stood.
'Very well. And as it seems you have an interest in Sindarin Nerie, I think it would be a good idea for you to teach some of the Galadhrim elves westron. Too few know this language. In return you may learn Sindarin.'
Lady Galadriel offered the now empty cup to Nerie, nodded to both, then left.
Haldir held his breath, looked at Nerie, then let it out in a long sigh. Nerie placed the goblet onto the table.
'So, Galadriel wants you to learn Sindarin does she?' Haldir murmured as Nerie sat on the chair and picked up the book.
'Yes, now come and continue. I want to learn more of your language Haldir.' Nerie said, patting the space besides her.
'Hama sinome.'
Haldir smiled.
'Amin naa lle nai.' he replied as he sat. Nerie frowned and Haldir laughed all the more.
'Now where were we?' he chuckled as he opened the book.

Chapter 15 - Sweet Parting
The next day, Nerie was introduced to a group of young elves who had been chosen to learn Westron. Over the next week Nerie enjoyed being in the company of the children and Haldir watched with pride as Nerie played with the young elves. It was the first time Haldir had seen such happiness on Nerie's face, all signs of grief temporarily forgotten. Neither knew of the bad tidings to be brought.
It was the next week that Galadriel had come to them and told them that Haldir was required at the borders. Nerie's stomach knotted as she watched Galadriel leave.
'When do you leave?' Nerie whispered.
Haldir hung his head, then lifted it to see new tears in Nerie's eyes but this wasn't grief for her lost family. These tears were for him!
Haldir sighed as he pulled Nerie close to him for comfort.
'I leave this afternoon Nerie. I am the March Warden for Lothlorien. You know that I cannot stay here permanently. I have a responsibility to Lothlorien to guard its borders and if your father was right, I will be needed all the more.'
Nerie nodded into Haldir's chest, not wanting to lose her friend, her companion so quickly. She looked upwards into Haldir's face to see pain in his eyes.
'Come now,' Haldir murmured, his lips resting on her forehead. 'No more tears. Not for me Nerie. never cry for me.'
'I can't help it Haldir. You are all I have left.' Nerie whispered, her fear making her lose her voice.
Haldir pulled her hard into his body as if push away the fears she held. Strong arms surrounded Nerie and crushed her to him then he released.
'Now come. Help me get ready.'
That afternoon Haldir stood with a group of border guards that were also going back. Nerie was there watching silently. Though her heart grieved for the loss of Haldir's company, Nerie knew that Haldir had to go. She watched as Haldir did the final check then turned and smiled a gentle smile to Nerie as he walked to her.
'Cormamin niuve tenna' ta elea lle au'' Haldir murmured as he lifted Nerie's hand to his mouth and gently kissed it's palm. Nerie frowned slightly and Haldir smiled.
'I said "my heart shall weep until it sees thee again."'
Nerie gulped, determined not to cry. Haldir didn't want her to cry for him.
'Take good care of yourself Haldir my friend. I want you to come back. You haven't finished teaching me Sindarin.' Nerie said hoarsely, emotion betrayed in her voice.
With a slow bow, Haldir turned and walked to the group of waiting elves, then with a last glance strode into the forest and back out to the borders. When Nerie could no longer see him, she began to turn but felt a small hand on her shoulder. Alasse stood behind her, a small smile on her face.
'I think I need to apologise.'
Nerie nodded.
'Walk with me awhile Alasse.' Nerie said, grateful of the distraction.
Weeks fell into months and Nerie missed Haldir terribly. Alasse had become a good friend. After the explanation of being rude and abrupt, Nerie could see Alasse would become a good friend to talk to. Alasse explained to Nerie how elves where born, how they lived. Death was so rare in the life of an elf that it was hard to comprehend your own death, let alone another. Nerie listened to wonder as Alasse went on to explain the history of man and the great battle in an age past when Sauron was slain. They had often spent their time together when Alasse was not working her duties. A deep friendship forged in those months and it helped Nerie immensely.
Alasse also helped Nerie with her teaching of the children. Spring had come so the class had escaped often into the surrounding woodlands on the fine days. Nerie laughed heartedly when she was with the children for they brought her great joy and as the children learned westron, so she learned Sindarin.
Her own grief diminishing into a tolerable state and no one but Alasse knew that Nerie still cried at night. For comfort she hugged one of Haldir's shirt, as it still smelt of him. Long nights she had lain feeling so lost on that bed as the moonlight shone through the windows.
