Chapter 5 - Eirien
Nerie shrugged the cloak further around her shoulders as she pulled the hood to cover her head. She had managed to persuade Haldir to go visit Arvarno to talk about the arrangements required for their visit to Rivendell. Haldir had already spoken to Lady Galadriel who, despite offering to help heal him, had given her blessing. Galadriel could see more than most that Haldir needed to get away from Lorien to sort out his feelings and his future. Rivendell was the perfect place to heal and to make lasting decisions.
As Nerie stepped down the last of the steps that held their flet, she smiled to herself. It had been sometime since she had been out of the house and she welcomed the chance to stretch her legs. Pregnancy though a delight for her baby moved almost constantly, was a bind when house bound by snowfall and now the snow had stopped, the sun was out and despite the bitter chill of the wind it was a beautiful day. The snow crunched as her heavy tread passed through the crystals, sunlight making them shimmer with a multitude of colours and Nerie could only wonder at the beautiful scene that lay before her. The woodland was quiet, few elves bothered to travel in this season and now it lay before her, still and covered with a diamond shimmering white layer of snow. She would enjoy this walk.
As she passed the trees, the sky above a pale blue of a birds egg, she began to think of the coming days and what would happen when the baby finally arrived. She rubbed her stomach absently, more as a gesture of comfort than to ease pain from walking. It would certainly be odd to think that the child she held would be hers and hers alone. She had experience of looking after children for the rearing of the clan had been a joint effort by all the clan but now she had no other females apart from Galadriel and Alasse and of course Haldir.
Nerie pushed a stray hair away from her face as she glanced at the silent forest; the only sound was her footsteps as they crunched through the icy snow. Haldir, she thought, would be a wonderful father. Strict but fair. Nerie admired his sense of honour and his sense of humour that few elves had ever seen. Even now, the Lorien elves found it amusing to see Haldir laugh at some jest when they attended the few feasts that the Lord and Lady held during the winter months. Soon it would be winter solstice and a fayre was to be held in the city of Caras Galadhom. Nerie was looking forward to that for though she had sewn some clothing for her baby; she needed other things for it like shoes. She smiled at the memory of an angry Haldir when he realised that he would not be able to make the cradle and how, between her and Arvarno, a decision was made that Arvarno would make it with help from Haldir. Nerie had no doubt that they would be finishing it off today as they talked about Rivendell.
A tightening pain crossed over her stomach, making Nerie pause to rub the pain away. Maybe she had walked further than she intended and now had a stitch. The pain eased and she walked over to a fallen tree stump and after brushing the snow from the sodden bark, she sat to rest. As she did so, another pain rippled across her abdomen making Nerie gasp and rub more but the pain only lessened by a degree then came in another wave. She grew frightened as each pain seemed to intensify and knew at once that she was in trouble. Alone in the forest and the baby was coming!
Knowing the safest thing to do was to slowly make her way back to the city, Nerie stood and felt water wash down her legs, making her skirts damp and colder still.
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" she moaned as another wave of deep pain rolled across her stomach, but still she walked, her footsteps faltering as another wash of agony ripped through her.
"Haldir . . . please find me...Haldir . . . " she whispered hoarsely, tears streaming down her cheeks as she screwed her face up in reaction to the increasing ache.
Pausing to catch her breath, she leant against a tree and cried. The pain was now severe and it was hard enough to breathe through it. Nerie didn't think that she could cope with anymore, her body cramping as she doubled over. It was if she was being ripped in two and she gripped the bark so hard, she gouged the wood into her fingers making them bleed.
After, what seemed an age, she saw the lights of Caras Galadhom and staggered to the first steps of the nearest tree, her breath in short gasps as she her stomach rippled as the strong contractions ripped down. Nerie wanted to push, nay, needed to push and could not stop herself. As she did, her panic was heightened. So near and yet so far . . .
"HALDIR!!!!!!" She screamed.
Rumil's head shot up, his quarry now startled and had flown from her grazing but Rumil cared not. A voice shrieked through the air and he recognized it instantly. Nerie!
In an instant he was up and running, slinging his bow over his shoulder and dropping the arrow. If Nerie was screaming like that, then she was in trouble and despite the tense relationship that had built over the last few weeks, Rumil cared for his brother and his wife. As he darted under a branch he saw a figure stretched over the stairs, clothing wet and sticking against her legs. He saw tears and the distress and knew instantly the reason. As he came to the panting figure of Nerie, he saw her distress as she gasped, her face contorted in pain and covered in a fine sheen of sweat.
"Rumil!" she gasped as he bent down and took her hands, "Saes . . . please find Haldir. . . the baby . . . . .coming."
Rumil placed his hand on her stomach and knew that by the time he went to find Haldir, the baby would be born. Shaking his head at the urgency of it all, his heart in his throat as he lifted her up and began to carry her up the stairs. She screamed again and it was all that Rumil could do to keep hold as her body tensed against him.
"OOOHHHH.....Haldir....Saes.....gods the pain," she moaned into his shoulder as he took the final steps.
Galadriel was waiting for him.
"Take her into the bedroom. I have things ready. Then find Haldir. He is with Arvano."
Rumil nodded as he strode into the flet and placed Nerie onto the bed. Another contraction hit her and she screamed again in agony. He then ran out and down the steps towards Arvarno's flet.
Galadriel followed behind and as Rumil left, she sat down and began to untie the cloak, then the dress and with some struggling managed to take both overdress and cloak away. It was then another contraction rolled over Nerie; her legs drawn up as her face, wide eyed as terror gripped her. She turned her head from side to side as she screamed yet again, her hands gripping the sheets. Taking Nerie's face in both of her hands, Galadriel took the shaking face and focused on her eyes.
"Nerie! Look at me! We must birth the child but you must listen. You must calm down."
"The pain Galadriel . . .. The pain . . . " Nerie moaned, tears falling down her cheeks. "Saes . . . the pain . . ."
Galadriel shook her head.
"You are nearly at the end and I cannot give you anything. When the next pain starts, push Nerie. Push the baby out. Hold your breath and push like you have never pushed before. Push hard Nerie else we will lose you and the baby."
Nerie tried to pull her head away but Galadriel refused to let go her silver sparkling eyes boring into Nerie's.
"Don't back away from this. You must push!"
Another pain began to strongly ooze and Nerie gasped. She screwed up her eyes and began to push, her mouth in a thin line as the bore down, her head coming up to rest on her chest. As the last part of the effort came to an end she yelled,
"HALDIR!!!"
Haldir ran to his flet, Arvano at his side, Rumil and Alas behind. He heard the scream and his pace became frantic. He stumbled through the door and strode to the bedroom, a last glance at Arvarno who nodded and paused in the living area. As Haldir entered, his heart bounded against his rib cage. Such distress, such pain that Haldir feared he could not watch his beloved suffer as she did now. Nerie's eyes opened and she looked at Haldir, terror in her eyes as her hands came up in silent demand for comfort.
"Haldir . . . saes make the pain stop."
Haldir glanced at Galadriel who smiled and nodded.
"You will be a father in a few minutes. Help her. The last part will be a struggle."
Haldir nodded as he crawled next to Nerie and leaning her upwards sat behind her so that she could rest against him, his legs either side of her body.
"Haldir . . ." Nerie whispered hoarsely but he kissed her damp brow, pushing the wet hair away from her face.
"I am here now. I am here a'maelamin. Let us have this child."
Nerie nodded, her faith returned. Now she was safe and as the calm sank into her soul another contraction rolled downwards, she tensed as she did what her body commanded and pushed with all her might.
"The head is here Nerie . . . one more push and you will have your child."
Galadriel murmured as she placed herself between Nerie's legs and pushed her underdress up and over her knees. Nerie nodded as she panted, gaining strength for the last push of agony, Haldir's smooth litany making her calmer still.
"You are beautiful, you are strong. One more push lirimaer and it will all be over. You are beautiful, you are strong . . ."
As the agony rose again, Nerie stifled the urge to scream, instead channeling the last ounce of energy into the hardest push of her life. Her head buried itself into her chest as the muscles rippled down and it was then that she heard the gurgled cry of a baby. Letting out the air in a whoosh, she opened her eyes and looked up to see Galadriel sliding the little one out and over to lay over Nerie's stomach, then quickly placed a towel over the child as it wailed. Nerie smiled, all pain forgotten as her arms surrounding the bundled baby, its face screwed up in a scream.
"Shhhh . . . shhhh my love, my little one. You are safe now. Nana and Ada are here. Shhhhh," she whispered.
"You have a daughter Haldir. She is perfect even down to her pointed ears." Galadriel smiled at them both.
At that Nerie grinned as she pushed the soft blanket to one side and saw the delicate ears, pointed at the end. Pale blonde hair nestled bloody and damp against her skull as the baby quieted, clear blue eyes gazing calmly at her mother.
"She is beautiful." Nerie whispered as she leant over and gently placed a kiss on the baby's head.
She then leant back to rest her face against Haldir and felt dampness. Turning slightly, she saw that Haldir had tears streaming down his cheeks as he gazed lovingly at his child. He was now a father and the rush of mixed emotions rolled over him, making him breathless. His gaze shifted to Nerie who smiled at him. He kissed her softly.
"I am the luckiest elf alive. I have a daughter."
Neither noticed Galadriel cutting the cord or tidying up the mess. . And now who sat on the bed to await the last of birth to be complete.
"Nerie?" Galadriel murmured, resting a hand on Nerie's knee, "You need to birth the final part. In a few moments you will have pain once more but it will be short lived. Let Haldir hold his daughter for a while and once we have sorted this out, you can have a bath, then rest."
Nerie nodded and leant forwards to let Haldir remove himself from behind her. Haldir placed pillows so that Nerie could lay back in comfort, then with shaking hands, Haldir held his tiny daughter so gently that he feared that he would hurt her. He was enthralled at this tiny creature that now held his heart so deeply within the smallest of fingers and he gaze dwelt on everything for she now slept, calm and happy, warm and contented after such a traumatic entrance. Her nose was small and delicate, like her mother's, her lips full like his own. Her eyes were shut but he knew the eyes were blue. With a barest touch, Haldir stroked the downy head, pale blond tufts ruffled against his fingers. The face was pink and still smeared with blood and as he gently wiped away the mess, the baby wriggled slightly against his attention, stilling him once more.
A warm hand encircled his and he looked up and smiled at his beloved who then gasped as another more gentle pain rolled across her abdomen. With a nod of comfort, Haldir held Nerie's hand as the final part began.
"I love you love of my life." he murmured as he glanced at the sleeping child in his arms, then at his beloved as she tensed again.
"As I you . . ." Nerie panted.
Later that evening, gentle laughter filled the air, as Nerie lay clean and warm in her bed with her child suckling at her breast. It was the oddest of sensations and it made Nerie euphoric but quite thirsty. Haldir watched with amusement and awe, his chin resting on Nerie's shoulder as the child fed. The scene was oddly sexual in a comforting way and he longed to nuzzle against the other breast. His heart swelled with pride as he rubbed his cheek against Nerie's.
"I am a father." he whispered.
Nerie grinned at the love in his voice.
"Yes you are my love. You have someone who will listen to your tales. Someone who will share your love of archery. Who will think you are the best daddy in all of Middle Earth." Nerie murmured as the child's suckling ended. With gentle moving, Nerie covered herself as she lifted the baby up so that it rested against her shoulder, its head against Haldir's face who kissed the sleeping child softly.
"Have you thought of a name?" Haldir asked, the smell of the baby intoxicating as he gently rubbed his face against the soft skin.
"I was thinking Eirien."
Haldir nodded in agreement.
"Daisy? Yes I like that. Eirien of Lorien. Daughter of Nerie and Haldir. May you have a long life beloved." Haldir murmured as he kissed Eirien's head, who burped in agreement. Haldir chuckled then rose his head to the sounds from the next room.
"I think it's time to introduce Eirien, don't you?" Haldir said as he arose from the bed and kissed his wife firmly on her soft lips.
"Let them in. They have waited for so long, it is about time Eirien met the rest of her family." Nerie replied as she snuggled her child down into her arms, asleep and content.
