Chapter 4 - Surrounding Darkness

It was several weeks after he had returned that Haldir and Nerie could get back into any form of routine. She could sense his frustration growing as his arm grew stronger but was still too weak to do any archery but at least, with a struggle, he could do the laces on his breeches without anyone's help. That in itself was a major achievement and something Nerie knew that Haldir hated her to do for him.

Nerie bloomed into the final few weeks of her pregnancy. Nearly nine months gone and Nerie felt huge and heavy as her abdomen stretched and grew rotund and she struggled to move from laying to sitting or even to simply get comfortable. The winter had settled in and though she liked to keep active to keep away the stiffness and pain of her back due to sitting too long, she felt most at home snuggled next to Haldir and Sulime. She could tell that Haldir was pleased to be home and that he could spend time with his wife but she could also tell that there was increasing frustration and anger at not being allowed to do the thing he most wanted to do, and that was to be March Warden yet again.

Celeborn had agreed that Rumil would take the post until either Haldir returned fully healed or until he relinquished his title and Nerie knew that Haldir struggled with the idea of losing his rank and office. If he lost that one respect, then who would respect an elf who seemingly had no use at all? Haldir had grown furious that night when he found out that Rumil had the position, feeling betrayed by his own brother. It had taken Nerie and Arvarno several nerve wracking hours to calm him down so that he could be reasoned with.

And now Nerie sat in the large lounge chair, pillows propping her back so that she was comfortable, as her eyes came up from the book she was reading and gazed at her beloved. Through the window she could see it was dark outside but the ghost shadows of snow could be seen against the lights of Caras Galadhron. Inside the flet it was warm and the lights mute, as Haldir's hair shimmered in the candlelight as he cleaned his sword. Gently grasped in his weakened hand, his stronger fingers held the cloth that eased the grime from the blade. Arvarno had offered weeks ago to do it but Haldir had insisted that he himself would do it. It would give him further incentive to strengthen his arm. Haldir had refused Lorien's healers and even Galadriel herself in any attempts to heal his arm, deeming it not their job to get him strong but his own fight to see to and this he would do.

With a final wipe, satisfied that the blade was clean once more, he suddenly noted he was being watched. Glancing upwards, Haldir noted Nerie watching him with an intense stare. His groin stirred as those sapphire eyes seemed to strip him of his very essence, leaving nothing behind but his love for her.

He gently placed his sword back into its sheath, then walked over to Nerie and crouching down, kissed her fingers of her hands.

"What is it my love?" he asked quietly, his azure eyes never leaving hers.

Nerie smiled gently and placed the book on her lap, where it slid downwards and Haldir caught it. "My belly isn"t any good for a tray anymore. Things keep sliding off," she chuckled as she watched Haldir lean over and placed the book on the side table.

Haldir smiled, as he raised his good arm and rubbed his hand over her swollen stomach, which rippled underneath his fingers as if the baby knew its father was there.

"You are beautiful Nerie. I know I haven't been the best husband and my temper grows short but never, ever forget that I love you. Or you," he added quietly to her stomach as Nerie smiled at her husband. "You look tired beloved," Nerie murmured as Haldir knelt at her side and ran his hand over her cheek and along her neck.

"Aye, and I grow bored of being inactive," Haldir replied as he leant upward and nuzzled the soft skin of Nerie's neck, lazy swirls of his tongue making Nerie gasp as she curled her fingers into his tunic, pulling him closer to her.

"I don"t think you are being very inactive at the moment," she sighed as Haldir nipped her ear lobe, licking and swirling it in his mouth.

Nerie heard a rumble in his chest as Haldir leant backwards and chuckled. Then standing swiftly, Haldir pulled Nerie gently upwards and led her to the bedroom. Once there he quickly undressed and stripped Nerie so that in the end they lay cocooned in each other's embrace as Haldir's lips roamed Nerie's blossoming body. Her skin had grown softer as the garish red jagged lines lay on her abdomen as if scratched deeply. Haldir kissed her stomach tenderly. "Do these hurt?"

Nerie glanced down to where Haldir lay and smiled gently. "No Haldir, there is no pain. It is a sign of a healthy baby," Nerie reassured then suddenly gasped as Haldir plunged his tongue into her belly button.

She giggled loudly and began to squirm as he swirled his moistness around her sensitive skin. Haldir watched with amusement and desire at the rolling body underneath him.

Haldir made his way back up her body, nuzzling into the soft breasts, enlarged from pregnancy. He faced Nerie, his erection hard as it pressed against Nerie's hip.

"I want to . . ." Haldir paused, gazing at Nerie. He had wondered if it was safe to carry on loving her when she was so close to term but having no one to ask without acute embarrassment, Haldir had remained quiet until now. He did not want to harm the child or Nerie.

Nerie smiled at him, feeling his acute discomfort. Her pregnancy had made her body more sensitive to his touch and she craved for him as if he was the very air she needed to have to survive.

"Haldir, love me. Please, just love me. Give me your undivided attention and all the pleasure a woman could want."

Haldir smiled as he began his nuzzling against Nerie's neck and breathed into her ear, "You are mine Nerie. You have my full desire. Let me show you."

Making love was difficult due to Haldir's arm and Nerie's increasing body size but they eventually found a new way to share. Haldir lay behind Nerie, his bad arm under her neck as he stroked her with his good arm, making Nerie quiver with need. His hand slid down in between her legs and Haldir smiled into her shoulder, suckling her neck and shoulder, and enjoying the feel of her increasing wetness. Finding that little hard nub that lay in between, Haldir rubbed it slowly at first with strong fingers, then increasing his pace as Nerie's cries of pleasure made his cock weep, making it slide over her soft buttocks.

Deeming that Nerie was needing release as much as he did, Haldir raised her leg up so that he could angle himself and slid easily into her waiting heat, his eyes fluttered shut as a deep groan escaped his lips. Her tight warmth encircled his hard member, giving him such deep-seated gratification that he sucked Nerie's shoulder he moved his good arm around to her hip, pressing her further over him. His weakened arm slid so that he could caress Nerie's back as he began to stroke into Nerie, his pleasure building gently. Nerie's whimpers of delight sent Haldir into raptures, his body growing hard and tense as the encircling and increasing pleasure made his pace increase to hard thrusting, the gentle sounds of slapping skin echoed in the room as his hips jerked into her with every thrust.

With a quick movement, Haldir placed his hand back into Nerie's wetness, rubbing that hard little nub, making Nerie cry out again. Haldir needed release and now. The friction built so that it was unbearable and as Nerie came, her voice crying his name, her muscles contracted making Haldir fly as his hot essence flooded into her body as his body shuddered. He groaned loudly as his climax was so intense as his member pulsed and throbbed as the last of his essence was spilled. With a gasp, Haldir relaxed onto the bed, his body covered with sweat. It was then that he heard a hiss and was instantly alarmed. Nerie was in pain!

Slipping out quickly, he turned her over to find her panting and rubbing her abdomen.

"What is it? Nerie? What's the matter?" Haldir asked urgently as he pushed Nerie's hair away from her face.

Nerie smiled gently, though her stomach seemed quite rigid. "Shh my march warden, I am alright. It is nothing but a test contraction. I think you son didn't like all the jolting."

Haldir snorted with relief, then chuckled as he leant over and kissed Nerie then bent down to kiss her belly.

"I apologise melethnin," he murmured into the soft mound of Nerie's abdomen.

He then slipped his weakened arm under her neck yet again, drawing her to him so that his body surrounded hers in a protective embrace. He stroked her hair as he felt Nerie snuggle into him.

"I love you," he murmured as he felt the tendrils of sleep slide into his mind.

It was dark but the screams were near, echoing around him as he stood his ground. His vision was clouded but he could smell the stench of fear, of orcs . . . of death. Swinging wildly, his body jerking as he lashed out, hitting shapes, blurred in this surreal environment. It was then that he felt the first cut, making him grunt then gasp for breath. He heard the slice of the second blade before it even hit him and he screamed.

Nerie awoke abruptly as Haldir's body tensed, a scream of terror peircing the air as Haldir fought in the bed, his body thrashing and covered with sweat.

Nerie leant over and grasped Haldir's face, turning it towards her as fear filled her. What was happening?

"Haldir!" she screamed, shaking his body, trying to make him wake for he still seemed asleep, "Haldir!"

Suddenly, with his mouth open with fear, Haldir opened his eyes and focused on Nerie, his body trembling from the raging emotions. After a few seconds, his body relaxed as Haldir slipped an around Nerie and pulled her close to him, needing the comfort. Never had he felt so terrified. Nerie laid her head on his sweat-covered neck and sighed in relief. She slowly pulled her face up so that Nerie gazed into Haldir's damp eyes, tears forming at the edges and smiled gently.

"Tis was a dream a'maelamin, nothing more. You are safe."

Haldir shut his eyes at Nerie's words, as a lone tear trickled down his cheek.

"But that's just it Nerie. I cannot keep you safe. I cannot protect the ones I love. I have no use here."

Nerie placed her head on her hand and rested there, gazing at Haldir for a few moments. She had guessed that this might be brewing and at last Haldir had spoken what he feared the most.

"Haldir," Nerie whispered, making Haldir open his eyes and turn to face her. "You are the most precious thing in my life. You are needed here, by me and by your child." Nerie grabbed Haldir's hand and placed it on her stomach, the baby kicking at the pressure.

"You are wonderful, loving, caring Haldir. You are also arrogant and self-centred sometimes but that is your strength. Don't let it be your weakness." Haldir nodded, his hand stroking the bouncing taut skin then let out a deep sigh.

"I want to go to Rivendell before Elrond leaves. I can't do this alone anymore," Haldir whispered, his body shaken from the intense dream.

Nerie smiled gently, pushing Haldir's damp hair away from his face and stroking his cheek in the process.

"Haldir? You are never alone. You have me, and Rumil and Orophin and Arvarno and both the Lord and Lady."

Haldir gazed at Nerie, her face warm and tender. He let his hand drift upwards so that it slipped behind her long blonde hair and brought her head to his, his lips pressing on to hers with a deep longing.

"Yes, I have you. Have I told you that I loved you?" Haldir replied, as he broke the kiss and murmured into her mouth, making Nerie giggle.

"Not recently melethnin."

Haldir raised an eyebrow in mock innocence. "Oh? Then let me correct that now. I love you, I love you, I love you," he whispered as Haldir kissed her brow, her nose, her mouth. "Is that enough?"

Nerie chuckled as she wrapped her hands around his neck and pulled him over her.

"Not by a long shot my galadhrim. Tell me again."

Haldir grinned; maybe things would be all right after all. "Well if you insist . . . . . . . . "
