A short time later they passed a sign that indicated Bree was a short distance away. "Penda," Elrond said, getting no response. "Penda," he said again, shaking her gently. Slowly she open her eyes and looked up at Elrond. "We are almost to Bree; you should wake up now," he said softly. Penda nodded her head and shifted a little. They had been riding longer than she thought. The sun would be going down soon , and her backside hurt.

As they rode into the village, the people they passed stopped and stared. Most of them had never seen one elf, let alone a group of six with a young woman traveling with them. Hoping to ease their minds, Penda said hello to everyone she knew. It worked. Soon the humans went back to their business, acting as though the elves had been there all along. When they got to the Prancing Pony Elrond told the four younger elves to wait outside; he Penda and Glorfindel would go in and ask about getting them rooms. They stepped inside to see a large room full of men. Immediately the room became quiet.

"Good evening Master Elves," Tom, the proprietor, said as he walked up. "Ahh, Penda, it is good to see you. How can I help you?" he asked her. When the rest of the crowd saw Tom talking to the elves, they went back to their business, causing the room to become noisy again.

"We are looking for rooms for the night,Tom. Can you help?" she asked.

"Certainly, how many will you need?" he asked.

"Four," said Elrond, who had stepped forward.

"Four you say?" asked Tom.

"Yes," replied Elrond, "I am Elrond, of Rivendell, my companion is Glorfindel, there's also four more members of our party waiting outside."

"Fine, fine, we have plenty," Tom said. "How is Will, Penda? We have not seen him in here for quiet sometime," he asked as he wrote Penda's name in his register.

Penda looked at him, then turned away, unable to answer. Glorfindel put his arms around her and guided her to a table in the corner.

"Penda's uncle, passed away early this morning," Elrond told Tom.

"No, what a shame," Tom said. "Whatever will she do now?"

"What will who do?" asked a short plump woman as she walked up behind Tom smiling at Elrond as she did.

"Young Penda, my dear. It seems Will has died, leaving her alone," Tom told her.

"No, you don't say. The poor dear. How is she taking it, milord?" the woman asked.

"As well as can be expected," Elrond relied. "Now, about those rooms?"

"Yes, yes, we have four very nice rooms," Tom said.

Elrond watched as the woman walked over to where Penda and Glorfindel were sitting. She sat down next to Penda and pulled her into her arms, comforting her like a mother would. Glorfindel stood and made his way over to Elrond, catching the eye of one of the serving girls as he passed by her. "You'll have to excuse my wife, sir," Tom said to him as he walked up. "Millie is very fond of Penda. We don't see Penda as often as we would like, so when she is here she treats her like the daughter we never had. I fancy she would like to see Penda married to one of our sons."

"Really?" Glorfindel asked.

"Yes, but it won't happen," Tom replied. "Her fate lies elsewhere, not here in this village married to one of these fools who would break her spirit. I imagine," he said as he looked straight at Elrond, "that's the reason you are here."

"Yes," Elrond said, "Will has asked that I take her to Rivendell to live." Then he turned to Glorfindel. "Go tell the others we will be staying here tonight, and to bring our packs."

"Yes, milord, and the horses?" Glorfindel asked.

"They can be put them in the stable across the street," Tom said as he gave Elrond the keys to their rooms. "There's plenty of stalls and feed for them. I'll send a lad over to take care of them for you."

"Thank you ," Glorfindel said, then left to do his friend's bidding.

"I'll have food and ale brought to your table, sir, when your friends join you, if you'd like." Tom said to Elrond.

"Yes, thank you , that will be fine," Elrond said. Then he turned and walked over to where Penda was sitting with Millie. Penda looked up as Elrond sat down across from her, her eyes red from crying.

"Milord, I'd like you to meet Millie. Millie, this is Lord Elrond," she said.

"Lord Elrond? Of Rivendell?" Millie said. "Why, I remember Will talking about you. How you two were great friends. I always thought they were just ramblings of an old, cantankerous man. Well, I am pleased to make your acquaintance."

"Likewise, milady," Elrond responded, liking the woman instantly.

"Penda tells me you are taking her to Rivendell to live. Is this true?" Millie asked.

"Yes we are," Elrond replied; "it was Will's wish that she learn her Elven heritage."

"But you'll need a guardian, won't you?" Millie asked.

"No, Millie, I will have no guardian," Penda said, "but Lord Elrond has agreed to be my teacher."

"Don't worry, Millie," Elrond said as the rest of the group joined them. "We will all watch out for her."

"You will be here teacher?" she said to Elrond. "And all of you," she said, looking at the group of elves, "will watch out for her?"

"Yes, Millie," replied Elrond.

"That's what I am afraid of," she said.

"Millie, she will be safe. I will let no harm come to her," Elrond said with a look in his eyes that any one of his people would have taken as a sign that the subject was dropped. But Millie was not one of the inhabitants of Imladris.

"If you say so, milord," Millie said, "but if I get word that she has been mistreated in any way, then you, Master Elf, will have to answer to me." Then turning away she headed for the kitchen to prepare their food.

"What was that all about, Ada?" Elrohir asked after Millie walked off.

"Nothing, son, she is just concerned with Penda's welfare, that is all," Elrond replied.

"She is upset that I have no guardian," Penda said to Elrohir, "and if anything happens to me, then your father will answer to her." Penda couldn't imagine the Elf Lord answering to anyone.

"That, I would love to see," see Glorfindel as he winked at Penda.

"I saw that!" Millie said as she returned with a tray of mugs, all over flowing with ale. "That is exactly what I mean. Penda is young and inexperienced. I don't…"

Glorfindel put his hands up in surrender, "I understand, trust me, I meant nothing by it. It was just a friendly gesture. Right, Penda?"

"Yes, Glorfindel," Penda answered. "Please, Millie, relax; he was right. Nothing was meant by it," Penda said as she stood and put her arms around the older woman; "I will be fine. Don't worry about me."

"What ever you say, Penda; I will leave you now, the girls will bring your dinner out shortly. If you need anything, just let the girls know," Millie told them, then she turned and left.

The girls that Millie was referring to were three young women. Two were twins, Iris and Rose; the third was their older sister Emma. They brought dinner out, which consisted of a hearty stew loaded down with vegetables, cheese and bread. Throughout the evening they made sure the elves didn't want for anything.

When they had finished eating Millie came out with some pie and offered them some. Then, sitting down next to Penda, she handed her a small pouch full of coins. "I am going to bed now," Millie told her, "but I wanted to give you this. It's for the chickens you brought," she said, smiling at Penda.

"Thank you, Millie, Penda said. "I don't know if I will see you before we leave in the morning, so…"

"Don't worry, I'll be up early to fix breakfast for everyone," Millie said.

"Alright then, I'll see you in the morning then," Penda replied, giving Millie a kiss on the cheek.

As the night wore on, partnerships were made with the girls. Iris paired up with Elladan and Amros, Rose with Elrohir and Aerandir, and Emma with Glorfindel. Glorfindel had extended an invitation to Elrond to join them, but Elrond declined.

"Penda," Elrond said, "when you are ready to go upstairs, I'll escort you. We can change your bandages then."

"Thank you, milord, I think I am ready now, if you don't mind," Penda said, trying to hold back a yawn. Elrond took her by the elbow and guided her to the stairway. As they got to the steps, he stopped, and leaving her standing there, he went back to the table. Getting the other elves attention he said , "We are leaving before sunup. Millie will be here to fix breakfast. Make sure you are all here, and able to ride." Then he turned and went back to where Penda was waiting and led her up to her room.
