Elrohir watched as his father approached. Getting up, he walked over to meet him halfway. "Ada," he said as he approached his father, "may I ask you something?"
"Certainly Elrohir; what is it?" Elrond replied.
"We were wondering. None of us have ever lost someone the way Penda has. Because she was raised with humans, she has lost many loved ones. We have lost loved ones also, but they went to the Undying Lands, and we will see them again, someday. We have lost friends in battle who have gone on to the Halls of Mandos, and we will see them again one day also."
"That is correct," Elrond replied.
"Then, Ada," Elrohir asked, "how does she do it? How does she survive the heartache, knowing she will never see Will again, or any of the rest of her family? Why does she not fade from the grief?"
"That, my son, is another gift they have," Elrond explained, "No matter how much heartache and grief the human heart goes through, it finds a way to mend. Elves may be immortal, but humans have a much stronger heart. They have to."
"But Penda is half elf, like we are," Elrohir pointed out.
"Yes, but she has lived with humans. She has had to become accustomed to losing loved ones. If she had not, she would not have survived," Elrond said.
"Is there anything we can do for her to ease her pain, Ada?"
"Be a friend to her, Elrohir," Elrond said. "When she wants to talk, listen. If she gets angry about what happened and takes it out on you or someone else, do not take it personally. Trust me, that feisty wildcat we saw only a few days ago will return. She will smile again. Let her talk about Will and the rest of her family when she is ready, ask her questions, but don't force the answers; they will come also. She needs time to grieve; and we shall give it to her," Elrond turned to look at Penda.
"Yes, Ada, I will keep that in mind," Elrohir said, then added,"If you are hungry you should get something to eat, and soon. It looks as though Glorfindel and Aerandir may finish off the rabbit."
Elrond laughed, saying, "Yes, it looks like they are enjoying it to much. Come, lets eat so we can be on our way again." Together, father and son walked back to where the rest of the group sat both hoping there would be something left.
Penda looked up when she heard Elrond laugh, watching as father and son walked back to where everyone was sitting. She liked to listen to the sound of his laugh, soft and deep; like his voice. She wondered if she would be expected to ride with him again. Earlier, when he had put his arms around her to grasp his horses reins, that warm feeling she got when he was near, had come back, and again when he helped her off the horse. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard someone call her name.
"Penda?" It was Glorfindel.
"Yes, Glorfindel?" she replied.
"Do you know how far we are from Bree?" he asked.
Penda looked around to get her bearings, "An hour and a half's ride, two at the most. Why do you ask?"
"I was wondering how hard it will be to find lodging?" he asked
"It shouldn't be a problem," Penda said; "the proprietor of The Prancing Pony and his wife are friends of Uncle Will and…" She stopped talking and looked down, clearing her throat. Then she looked up and said "I am sure they will be able to find rooms for us."
"Then we should be on our way," said Elrond, as he finished the cheese and bread that he was eating, "as we only have a few hours of sunlight left."
Everyone agreed, and after repacking the food that wasn't eaten they all walked back to the horses.
"Penda, you will ride with me," Elrond said as he and Glorfindel walked ahead of the rest of the group.
Penda walked over to where Elrond and Glorfindel waited by their horses. Taking her by the waist, Elrond lifted her up and onto his horse, and then he jumped up behind her. Reaching around her, he grasped the reins and gave his horse a nudge to get it moving. Penda sat up straight, trying to keep her body from touching his, but it didn't work. Elrond gave the horse a signal and its pace quickened. Suddenly Elrond's arm was around her waist and she was pulled against him. She tried to pull away.
"Be still, or you'll fall off," Elrond said softly in her ear as he tightened his hold on her. Realizing there was nothing she could do, Penda relaxed against him, enjoying the wind as it blew through her hair and the feel of Elrond's strong arm wrapped around her. Eventually the motion of the horse caused her to fall asleep.
Elrond was enjoying the ride too. When he had pulled her against him, it was to keep her from falling off. Now, though, he wondered if he had done the right thing. That nice back side of hers was rubbing against the inside of his thighs, and other places; and her breasts were brushing against his arm. He felt her head roll against his shoulder. Looking down he saw that she had fallen asleep. Carefully so as not to wake her, he shifted her in his arms to get into a more comfortable position. When he did, his thumb accidentally brushed against one breast, causing the nipple to harden. He checked to see if she was still asleep; thankfully, she was.
Later, as he slowed his horse to a walk, Glorfindel pulled up beside him. "She sleeps?" he asked.
"Yes," Elrond replied, "she has been for quiet some time. I'll let her sleep for a little longer. But I want her awake when we get to Bree."
"Good," Glorfindel said, "as I need to speak with you about her."
"Oh? What is it?" Elrond asked.
"Did Will tell you anything about her life before she came to live with him?" Glorfindel asked.
"No, he didn't. Why do you ask?"
"I was just talking to Elladan. Apparently this morning, while he was outside with her, she opened up a little and told him," Glorfindel said.
"And?" asked Elrond.
"Apparently she has not had an easy life," Glorfindel said. "The humans who raised her had a tendency of being abusive towards her," Glorfindel replied.
"They beat her?" Elrond asked, as, without realizing it, he tightened his hold on her.
"She did not say, she would only tell him that her time with Will was the happiest time of her life, the first she had with no abuse," Glorfindel told Elrond.
"Then we will need to draw it out of her," Elrond said, "but not today. After she has been given a chance to adjust to her life in Imladris, I will speak to her of it. She will have a better life there mellon, and if any one harms her, they will answer to me."
