The small group of elves moved slowly down the road. They had been traveling for seven days. One turned to their leader and asked "How much further, Brannon nin?" "It is only a half days ride from here, Glorfindel." The one speaking to him was his close friend Elrond, Lord of Imladris. "Are you in such a big rush to return home, mellon nin? I rather thought you would enjoy this trip." "I am," said Glorfindel, "but I would enjoy it more if I could be clean." Elrond shook his head and chuckled. He knew how his friend felt. It had been several days since they had been able to take anything that resembeled a bath. "We will be there before our evening meal, and then, my friend, we shall bathe. I am sure William will have a place that we can use.
They were going to see an old friend of Elrond's, William Honeyleaf, who lived a day's ride northeast of Bree. They could have stayed in town, at the Prancing Pony - Aragorn had told him that the lodgings were decent, and they would have had the bath that they all desired, but Elrond decided against that, not wanting to draw attention to themselves. A group of six elves traveling thru this part of Middle Earth was an unusual sight.
Elrond had received a letter form William, or Will as he preferred to be called, asking if Elrond could come to him. Glorfindel could not understand why his friend was making this trip; after all, this friend Will, was just a man, he should have made the trip to Imladris if he wanted to see Elrond so bad. He had told Elrond that when the message had arrived, almost two weeks earlier. "It is because he is in bad health these days," Elrond stated, "and is unable to make the journey. He said in his message that he had something of great importance to ask me and it cannot be asked in a letter." Having said that, Elrond looked at Glorfindel as if to say "The subject is dropped--either go with us or stay, the choice is yours." They had left Imladris two days later. Along with them were Elrond's sons, Elladan and Elrohir, and two of his best guards, Amros and Aerandir.
Elrond was deep in thought, wondering what Will needed of him, when he was brought out of his reverie by the sound of running horse's. Looking up, he saw his son's riding towards him as fast as their mounts could carry them. They pulled their horse's to a sudden stop in front of their father. "Uruk-hai" said Elladan, "A party of twenty of them, just beyond the bend in the road." Elrond looked past his sons in the direction they indicated.
Turning to the others he said, "We will go around them, as I am in no mood for fighting…"
His words were cut short by a scream, and looking back past his sons, he saw the band of Uruk-hai running towards them. "So much for not fighting" he signed and, drawing his sword he spurred his horse forward to meet the enemy. Elladan and Elrohir raced ahead of their father and the others and, nocking arrows into their bows, were able to bring down several of the Uruk-hai before they were upon them. Elf, Horse, and Uruk-hai merged to do battle, it would not last long, as all of the Elves were seasoned warriors. And, although the Uruk-hai were able to pull two of the Elves from their horse's, they were no match for Elrond and Glorfindel, who came to the aid of the fallen Elves. Jumping from their horse's, they got into the middle of the fight, dispatching the Uruk-hai with one stroke of their swords. As expected, the battle only lasted a few moments. When all was quiet, Elrond looked around, surveying the scene of the skirmish. There, on the ground lay two injured elves and twenty dead Uruk-hai.
While Elrond looked after the two injured elves, his sons and Glorfindel gathered the bodies of the Uruk-hai and their weapons and, after stacking them in a pile, set fire to them. A short time later, they had mounted their horses and set out again. Looking at everyone, Elrond knew they would need to stop and bathe before they arrived at Will's.
All of them were covered in blood and gore. "We will need to look for a stream or a small pond" he stated, to no one imparticular. Everyone agreed, especially Glorfindel.
An hour later they came upon a small stream. Following it, they saw that it was gradually getting bigger, until it disappeared into some trees and bushs. Riding their horses into the bushs, Elrond looked thru them and saw that the stream did in fact empty into a small lake, about one hundred feet from where they were. He dismounted, dropping the reins, knowing the horse would not wander off, and reached up for his pack containing clean clothing, soap, washcloth and towel. He turned and, seeing that the others had done the same said "We will leave the horse's here, Elladan, Aerandir and I will bathe first while Elrohir and Glorfindel stand guard. Then while I redress Aerandir's wounds, Glorfindel and Elrohir will bathe and assist Amros while Elladan stands guard."
Everyone agreed to this plan since Aerandiir had been injured more seriously. Taking his pack, Elrond began to make his way to the other side of the bushs, with his sons right behind him. As he was about to step out into the clearing he stopped suddenly, his sons bumping into him and causing them to drop their packs. They started to say something when Elrond motioned for them to be quiet. Picking their packs up, they looked to see what had distracted their father.
