Summary: After realizing their true feelings for one another, Haldir and Lilane find peace and something they've never known...true love.
Notes: Special Thanks to Julie, for the beta. Without her, this story would have been a chaotic mess of spelling errors and grammatical flubs.
Haldir walked hand in hand with Lilane. She was leading him out of the city, but to what destination, she would not tell him. Still, he was happy in his ignorance, and content to be in her presence.
"Shall I venture a guess as to where we are headed? Or will that spoil your fun?" he asked her playfully.
She smiled and pulled his arm closer to her. "Just wait. You will see."
Three days had passed since the night when Haldir gave his heart to Lilane, and in those three days he had hardly left her side. Their new relationship was causing quite a stir among the elves that lived in the Golden Wood, and even Galadriel herself had come to offer her blessings and praise. But none were more pleased than Rumil and Orophin, and they had finally given up on teasing him; for nothing could wipe the smile from Haldir's face now.
They followed the path into the thick canopy of trees. The road became rougher, and Haldir realized that this was not a well-traveled place, wherever it was. They had to dodge some low branches and fallen trees, but finally it cleared, and Lilane announced that they had arrived at their destination.
Haldir looked over the glittering pool with a wide smile. Indeed it was beautiful, and very secluded. Lilane observed his reaction to the scenery with satisfaction. He turned to her.
"It's lovely," he said, his eyes aglow. "How did you find it?"
She looked out over the water. "I stumbled on it by accident several years ago. It's quite a walk, but worth it." She paused. "I come here a lot...to think. I've always dreamt of sharing it with the one I love." She took his hand in hers. "It is my gift to you, Haldir, along with my heart."
He pulled her close to him and kissed her with passion. He felt he would burst with joy. He wanted to sing to her, though was never blessed with a good singing voice, but his soul had made many songs over the past few days.
Haldir suddenly laughed.
"What?" Lilane asked.
"I spoke with Faneuil before we left. He said our public displays of affection were beginning to make him ill." He laughed again. "But he is very happy for us."
Lilane said nothing but grinned, and snuggled closer to Haldir. They stayed that way for a long moment.
"Shall we swim?" he asked. "The water looks very inviting."
She nodded. "Yes, let's do that. The last time I came here my heart was heavy and in turmoil. I would like to replace that memory with a happy one." Haldir's face grew solemn for a moment. "I am sorry. I know that I was the cause of it."
She shook her head. "Do not apologize. The care you have shown me in the last few days has erased that pain, and then some. Now, take off your clothes." she demanded.
His brow shot up. "Yes, my lady."
They undressed quickly and without inhibition, for they were accustomed to being without their clothes in each other's presence. When Lilane had finished removing her dress, she helped Haldir to unlace his leggings and boots. Haldir watched her with a gentle smile. When she was finished, she went into the water first, and stopped to wait for him when the water came to her waist.
Haldir followed, enjoying her beauty and the backdrop of the amazing landscape. Once they were both in he took her into his arms again and held her in the weightless water.
"Doesn't the water feel good?" she asked him, smoothing away the wet tendrils of hair from his shoulders.
"Yes, it does," he said, almost growled. "But the feel of your naked wet skin is a much more enticing sensation." He pressed his lips to hers and kissed her, and then quickly traveled down to her neck. Her mouth opened in response, letting out a slow, quiet moan.
Underneath the water, Haldir let his hands roam freely over her body. They moved from her waist and then traveled down further, gripping her backside. He made his arousal apparent by pressing against her.
Haldir managed to maneuver them in the direction of a large rock that sat in the midst of the flowing water. It was smooth from erosion so he wedged Lilane between him and the great rock. She was already panting with desire for him.
"With your permission, my lady."
Her eyes were half-closed and full of need. "Take me. I am yours."
And so he plunged into her with all of his longing, all of his desire for her. Their newfound love had made their lovemaking all the more powerful, and he doubted if he'd ever get enough of her. The years ahead now held a promise that he never in all his wildest dreams imagined, and he felt that nothing could destroy them now. Only death could keep him from her, but only as long as it took their souls to reach each other in the Halls of Mandos.

Many years later...
Haldir reached the city gates and looked around for his wife. In his arms he held a small elf-child, his daughter Lilessa. She looked up at her father with bright blue eyes.
"Where's mama?" the child asked.
"That's a good question, 'Essa." he said, and looked up, his eyes scanning the distance. He caught sight of Lilane, her arms full, walking slowly down to the gate. She reached him moments later, a weary smile on her face.
Haldir peered down at the baby in her arms with a great smile on his face. The sight of his newest child never ceased to bring a smile to his face.
"Well, we've got two of the children. Care to take a guess where the third one might be?" Haldir asked her, chuckling.
"Still playing hide-and-seek with Faneuil, I'll bet." Lilane said. "Mikael probably found a good spot."
Haldir grunted. Lilessa put her arms around her father's neck. "Can I go play with Mikael, father?"
"No, precious," Haldir responded. "We're leaving for Rivendell today, remember?"
The child's eyes lit up and she screeched with joy. "Rivendell! Rivendell!"
Suddenly a great boyish yell was heard, and another small elf-child burst from the trees, running at full speed. Following close behind him was a noticeably exhausted Faneuil. He spotted Lilane and Haldir and smiled sheepishly.
"He hid inside one of the great hollow trees!" Faneuil said breathlessly. "I couldn't find him, and he wouldn't come out to me! When I finally found him, he ran away. I don't think he's too interested in journeying to Rivendell."
Haldir caught the elfling as he sped by, and lifted him with his other arm. "Whoa, there. Just where do you think you're running off to, Mikael? Your mother has been looking everywhere for you."
The child gave him a mischievous smile "Fighting the Orcs, Father!"
Haldir grinned and nodded his head. "And did you defeat them all?"
The elfling thought for a moment. "All except that one!" he exclaimed, and thrusting his finger in the direction of Faneuil. Everyone laughed loudly, and the child buried his head in his father's shoulder in embarrassment. Haldir looked to Lilane, who was smiling proudly.
"We should get going," she said. "We're already an hour off schedule, though I should have expected it."
Faneuil hugged Lilane. "I shall miss your company while you are away." he said, and then approached Mikael.
"Be good for your father and mother." he said, as he mussed up the child's hair. Haldir gave him a friendly nod.
Haldir gathered his family and they passed through the gates, his wife at his side, his children riding on the pony. He slipped his arm around Lilane and smiled gently at her, and then down at his youngest daughter, who was sound asleep. Suddenly he felt a great swell of joy in his heart, for those he loved most in the world were with him. He looked ahead at the road, knowing that the journey to Rivendell would be long, but he would not tire of it. His children had never seen Imladris, and that fact alone was enough to excite him. He had to wait many years, through the dark times, for the road to Rivendell to be safe enough for a family to travel alone. Middle-earth finally knew peace, which afforded Haldir the opportunity to concentrate on raising his family rather than protecting the Golden Wood.
"You have that look in your eye." Lilane suddenly said.
Haldir snapped out of his reverie at the sound of her voice. Lilane regarded him with a gentle smile.
"What look is that, my love?"
Her smile widened. "That sentimental, thoughtful look."
He sighed and pulled her closer as they walked. "Every once in awhile, the joy of my blessings overwhelms me. Despite the constant messiness of our talan, the numerous fights we've had to break up between our children, and the fact that we never arrive anywhere on time, I think back to days when I had not you nor our three wonderful children and I wonder how I convinced myself that I was happy."
Lilane smiled and laughed. "One cannot fully appreciate the warmth and brightness of the sun without knowing the cold rain."
He nodded thoughtfully. "Truer words have never been spoken. My life before was a cold, endless rain. Until I found you."
She looked at him, the joy of the moment evident in her eyes. Tears welled up in them and she smiled. He leaned down and kissed her on the lips.
"Oh, they're doing it again!" Mikael commented to his sister. The couple laughed and glanced back at their children, who were making no attempt at stifling their giggles.
"One day, you will meet a pretty she-elf and you will do the same." Lilane said. Mikael wrinkled up his nose.
"I hope not! She-elves are foul! Except for you, Mother."
Lilessa slapped her brother on the arm. "Hey, I'm not foul!"
"Yes, you are!"
"No, I'm not! Father!"
Haldir shook his head and laughed as Lilane handed over the bundle that contained his youngest child. He wiggled a finger in front of her face and the elfling caught it in her tiny grasp, and squealed with glee.
"See what I mean? Who could ask for more?" he said.
Lilane nudged him in the side. "We could always have more of them, you know." Haldir raised a brow and grinned at the thought. His brothers had eight children between them now, and Haldir never did like being outdone by his brothers.
"Conceive another in Imladris, my love?" He nodded his head. "The thought has merit."
"How much merit?" she asked him teasingly.
He leaned closer to her. "Much, much merit," he whispered in her ear. And without a glance at his smirking children, he kissed her once more on the lips. "My love." he added quietly.
Lilane slipped her hand into his and squeezed his fingers.
It was but a taste of things to come, but for now it was enough.
