Summary The realities of being a modern woman zapped back in time to Middle Earth - minus the fluff.
Notes Elvish is Sindarin; If it looks like Tolkien and it sounds like Tolkien, it probably is. He wrote it first, he wrote it best, I'm just repeating it for storytelling purposes and make no claim that I came up with it. Everyone else has done the Modern Female in M.E., so now it's my turn. Hopefully, I've done it with a bit of style and believability.
Chapter Five: The Dark, The Light, And The Hiding Place In Between
The party received leave from Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn to rest and recover from their journey. The Elves had erected a great pavilion beneath a huge mallorn tree and furnished it with couches. Jessy had not journey, up the ladder to greet the Lord and Lady, her fear of heights preventing her.
They had been camped for less than a week, when Boromir's possessiveness had become like a great weight around Jessy's neck. It was late one evening when, having had enough, she slipped from the camp to wander the hills and dales within the city walls. Lost in thought, she did not hear him approach her.
"You are restless this night. What ails you?" Boromir asked softly.
Jessy jumped at the sound of his voice and spun around to face him. He looked more haggard than usual and his eyes held a wild look, as if something were gnawing at him. The folly of her nocturnal wandering struck her as she realized they were far from camp. "Nothing ails me. I'm a little homesick is all."
She moved to pass him but he sidestepped, blocking her way. Her heart rate jumped and a trickle of fear raced down her spine. "Let me pass," she said sternly. The quiver of fear in her voice ruined the effect.
Boromir reached up to stroke her cheek with a finger, ignoring the fact that she flinched. "Do not fear me. I would not hurt you. It grieves me to see you jump every time I move around you."
"Boromir, I wish to return to camp. Please let me pass."
Boromir eyed her harshly, "I will let you pass, when I have finished telling you of my plans." His expression changed and he said in a much softer tone, "I think you will be pleased with my decision."
Jessy tried not to panic and slowly backed away from him. "You're starting to scare me now. Please just leave me alone."
Boromir ignored her plea as he advanced on her. His eyes held a distant look, and Jessy wondered if he was even hearing what she was saying. She backed into a tree, realizing her mistake too late. She was trapped.
Boromir stroked her face. "I thought to marry you to a noble in Gondor. I thought that it would rid me of the guilt I feel every time I look at your face. But now I see more clearly. You will be my wife. I will see that no one ever harms you again."
Before Jessy could turn her head, his lips met hers in a crushing kiss. She struggled against him, but his bulk was too much for her.
He broke the kiss and Jessy turned her head to the side, unshed tears filling her eyes.
Boromir softly kissed her jaw line, until he reached her ear. "Do not fight me. I come to you as your future husband, there is no shame."
Before Jessy realized what was happening, Boromir used his leg to sweep her feet out from under her. Forcing her to the ground, she had little chance to escape before he settled his weight on top of her. Pinning her down. She opened her mouth to protest, but made no sound as his tongue invaded her mouth.
He broke the kiss and shifted his weight to one elbow, freeing his other hand. He fumbled with the small buttons of her blouse unable to manipulate them. Finally, losing patience, he grabbed the neckline and ripped it open.
Jessy began to fight in earnest, tears streaking her face. "Boromir, stop. Don't do this!"
"I am sorry to take you on the ground like a common wench, but I have no choice. The Elf will not touch you, if I have you first."
Jessy pushed against his hand as it reached for the lacing holding her skirt together.
Then suddenly his weight was gone. She didn't know what had happened, only that she was free from his grasp. Without a second look back, she scrambled to her feet and fled back towards the main path.
Boromir landed on his backside after being picked up and thrown off Jessy. He jumped to his feet, only to face Legolas. The Elf was livid with rage.
"You had no right to interfere with my affairs." Boromir snarled at him.
"I do when your affairs include raping an unwilling girl," came the angry retort.
"What can you offer her, Legolas? What will happen when she grows old and you remain young? Will you still care for her then? I will make her a queen." Boromir slowly advanced towards Legolas.
Legolas snorted, "You are a fool, Boromir. You see competition where there is none. Neither one of us have anything to offer her. We are bound by our quest. One, which we may not survive."
Boromir roared and started to charge the Elf, but was caught around the waist by restraining arms.
"Enough!" Aragorn roared. "The girl will remain in the care of the Galadrim. Celeborn and Galadriel have already agreed to be her wards. You will both cease this needless feud. Our only purpose is to protect the Ringbearer and see that the One Ring is destroyed."
Boromir stopped his struggles, and Aragorn released him. He stood panting, eyeing Legolas with unabashed hatred. "Do not meddle in my affairs again, either of you."
The man before him did not intimidate Legolas. "Know this, Boromir of Gondor, if you ever lay a finger on an unwilling woman again, I will not hesitate to kill you".
Before Boromir could respond, Legolas turned and left the clearing.
~*~*~*~
Jessy ran down the main path, until she reached the southern city gate. Throwing herself at it, she began to pound on it.
"Open the gates!" She screamed hysterically. The great doors remained motionless. Jessy became mindless, ripping and tearing at the seam until her fingers were bleeding.
Hands gripped her shoulders but she tore free of them, beating at the gates more frantic than ever. Until she finally collapsed, sobbing. "Please let me out. I want to go far away from here. I want to go home to my boring life. I want to forget this place and everything in it." She continued to sob, until she had nothing left.
"Hush child," a deep male voice sounded in her ear, "you are safe now. No one shall harm you again."
She turned to face the speaker. He was regal looking and his face showed fatherly concern. Feeling lost and alone, she threw herself into his open arms. A sense of peace filled her, and she allowed herself to be led away from the gate.
He guided her back through the city, until they reached a large tree. The roots rose up out of the ground framing a hollow in the trunk. Outside the opening, stood a tall, beautiful female dressed in a flowing white gown. She asked Jessy's guide something in Elvish, her voice a rich alto. He responded in the same language.
Turning to Jessy, he said, "I am Celeborn, and I leave you in the care of my lady, Galadriel. Have no fear that you will be disturbed. My guards have surrounded this glade and none save myself or her handmaidens shall pass."
Jessy nodded meekly, the sudden realization that her savior was none other then the Elven lord of the city left her tongue-tied.
"Come child. Let us see to your comfort." Galadriel motioned for Jessy to follow her into the tree.
An hour later, Jessy felt like a new person. She was clean and after much pleading, her hair had been cut short. She had been given a gown the color of autumn leaves and a pair of soft leather slippers to match.
Her joy was short-lived as Galadriel led her back towards the pavilion at the base of the giant mallorn.
Galadriel sensed her reluctance, "Do not fear little one. You will spend this night within my home."
Jessy turn a wide-eyed gaze at her host, "I'm afraid of heights, I can't go up."
Galadriel only smiled.
Before they entered the clearing at the base of the tree, guards seemed to appear out of nowhere to surround Jessy. She was unable to see anything until they parted to reveal Galadriel standing at the base of the ladder. Jessy eyes seemed drawn to Galadriel's and then the world around her faded. When she finally became aware of her surroundings, she was standing in the middle of what could only be described as a throne room.
The room was filled with Elves, mingling in small groups. Several were seated in a corner playing instruments or singing softly. Light conversation filled the air. In the center of the room cut into the bole of the tree were two thrones, Celeborn was currently seated in one of them.
Galadriel maneuvered Jessy through a curtained archway in the rear of the room. Beyond was a less formal living space. Couches and chairs were scattered throughout the room. Next to one couch was an embroidery stand with a partially embroidered robe affixed to it. On the left wall were bookshelves flanking a desk. To the right, the room opened up onto a balcony. Several curtained openings lined the back wall. Galadriel led her through the opening on the far left.
"This is a guest room that you can use, until more permanent accommodations can be found."
Jessy eyes widened at the luxury of the room. A large bed dominated the left wall covered with cream linens and a rich coverlet of emerald velvet. A linen nightgown lay folded neatly at the end of the bed. Directly across from the bed stood a large armoire covered with intricate carvings. The far wall contained a curtained archway that led to a small balcony.
"Thank you for you kindness, My Lady." Jessy managed to stammer out, her senses being overwhelmed with the evenings events. She stifled a yawn and looked longingly at the bed.
Galadriel smiled and said softly, "Sleep well child." She left the room and returned to the great hall.
Jessy changed into the nightgown and carefully folded her borrowed gown. Climbing into the soft bed, her head barely hit the pillow before she fell into a deep, healing sleep.
~*~*~*~
The next morning Jessy was awakened by one of Galadriel's handmaidens. Jessy couldn't remember her name but recognized her from the night before. She said something in Elvish and pointed to a pile of folded clothing on the bed. Through hand signals, she instructed Jessy to dress and then go to the common room.
Jessy was surprised to find that the clothing was not another gown as she had expected. Instead she had been provided with leggings, a tunic of dark brown, a pair of soft suede boots, a comb, brush, and a thin circlet of silver. Dressing quickly, she hurried into the common room.
The handmaiden led her back to the throne room and then through a second archway to a dining hall. Long tables filled the room. Elves filled the room, coming and going as they finished with their morning meal. She was led to the high table and seated next to Galadriel, the handmaiden taking the seat on Jessy's other side.
After breakfast, Celeborn rose and motioned for Jessy to follow him. He led her back to the throne room and out onto the main entryway. Two guards awaited him there.
"This is, Ondollo and his sister, Melui. I have assigned them to you while the Fellowship remains in our city. Both of them speak the Common tongue, and you are not to leave this building without them."
Jessy greeted them and was rewarded with smiles from both.
Celeborn eyed Jessy critically before he continued, "I think it is time to help you overcome your fear of heights."
Jessy paled as Celeborn motioned for Ondollo towards the ladder. "I don't think this is really such a good idea. I can stay here, really," Jessy argued.
Celeborn only frowned and pushed her towards the opening. "Do as I say, child."
Having no other choice, Jessy slowly stepped down onto the ladder, until her feet were two rungs above Ondollo's. Because of his height, his body covered hers and his hands could comfortably grip the rung above her hands.
Jessy tried not to panic as they slowly descended the ladder. Ondollo kept up a steady stream of encouragement, trying to keep Jessy's mind on the simple task of moving downward. Finally, after three full-blown panic attacks, which had caused Jessy to freeze up completely, they reached the ground. Celeborn and Melui right behind them. Jessy felt as if she had run the Boston Marathon and silently prayed she wouldn't have to turn around and climb back up.
Celeborn smiled broadly at the pale girl. Reaching over to give her shoulder a fatherly squeeze, he said, "I am proud of you. That took a lot of courage."
He turned and walked away, leaving the others to follow in his wake.
He finally reached a large clearing that was obviously used as a training ground. It was divided in two down the center by a large wooden fence that stood well over ten feet tall. The left side was designated as an archery range and the fence continued around the back and other side. The right side was left open and guards could be seen practicing a variety of fighting skills, from sword practice to hand-to-hand combat.
Two large trees flanked the clearing opening, each had an entrance at ground level similar to the bathhouse she had seen the night before. They entered the tree on the left. Elves at various tables worked at repairing bows and making arrows. A male Elf entered the room through a curtained archway carrying a bow and quiver of arrows.
"`Quel amrun, Haryos" [Good morning, Haryos], Celeborn greeted the Elf.
"'Quel amrun, heru en amin" , Haryos said as he handed the bow and quiver to Celeborn.
"Antamin cû ten' i'hina" [I need a bow for the child], he motioned towards Jessy.
Haryos studied Jessy for a moment and then disappeared into the back room. He returned with a second bow much smaller than Celeborn's and a second quiver of arrows.
Jessy accepted the weapon reluctantly.
Celeborn thanked the Elf and guided Jessy out of the armory.
"What do you expect me to do with this?" she asked.
"I expect you to learn how to use it." Celeborn replied.
Jessy stopped and stared at him as if he had suddenly sprouted horns. "Do you really think this is wise?"
Celeborn turned and regarded her before asking, "Must you always complain?"
Jessy blushed as she realized how childish she must have sounded.
Without a word, Celeborn turned and continued on towards the range. Jessy followed meekly behind him.
~*~*~*~
It was late morning, when Celeborn called a halt to the archery lesson. Jessy had spent most of the morning learning the parts of the bow and practicing nocking arrows.
Jessy spent another harrowing thirty minutes ascending the ladder back up to the palace, though she was able to hold off her panic attacks.
After lunch, she was sent back up to Galadriel, where she spent most of the afternoon learning to sew. Galadriel also tried to teach her basic Sindarin, but Jessy wasn't proving very adept at picking up the language.
~*~*~*~
Jessy settled easily into a routine. Mornings were spent with Celeborn learning archery. Ondollo gave her a wooden practice sword and taught her some basic defensive moves, but Celeborn refused to let her try with a real blade. Her afternoons were spent with Galadriel. She became very proficient with a needle, but her language skills were sorely lacking. She just couldn't seem to get her tongue twisted around the strange syllables. She was free to spend the evenings as she pleased and could normally be found exploring the city, Ondollo and Melui always close by. Her daily struggle with her fear of heights was becoming easier, and she rarely panicked.
She saw little of the Fellowship until one night while wandering, she came across the Hobbits sitting by the river.
"Jessy!" Pippin exclaimed brightly, before leaping up and embracing her. He was soon joined by Merry.
Jessy laughed with delight at seeing her friends again. She introduced them to Ondollo and Melui, before dropping onto the grass beside Sam.
"Aragorn has told us that you will be staying here. Are you being treated well?" Frodo asked politely, not wishing to mention the unfortunate circumstances that had caused her to be isolated from them.
"Other than Celeborn being a bit of a slave driver on the archery range, I guess it's okay." Jessy replied, looking over her shoulder to see if her guards had overheard her comment. Not noting a reaction, she continued, " But I must confess I miss Merry's cooking. Especially your sausage and vegetable dish."
Merry fairly beamed with pride.
The conversation continued late into the night, until Ondollo reminded Jessy that Celeborn expected them to get an early start in the morning. It was with great reluctance that the five friends parted ways for the evening, but not before the promise was made to meet again the next evening.
~*~*~*~
Jessy eyed the target thirty feet away and then released the arrow. It flew to the left of the target and landed in the grass.
"You forgot to square your shoulders again," Celeborn, said curtly. "How many times do we have to go over this?"
Jessy flashed him an angry glance, before grabbing another arrow from her quiver. Making sure her right shoulder was back, she aimed and was rewarded when her arrow hit the outer edge of the target.
"Much better. Now do it again." Celeborn instructed her.
Jessy wiped the sweat from her brow and retrieved another arrow.
Celeborn had been a terror all morning. Apparently her comment from the night before had been overheard and repeated. Dawn had been an hour away when Celeborn had entered her room and, none to gently, shaken her awake. She barely had time to grab a piece of fruit, before he ushered her out the door towards the range. Once there, he had drilled her relentlessly.
Her arrow fell short of the target
"Again." Celeborn barked.
Jessy finally had enough, she was hungry and her arms ached. "No!"
Celeborn raised one eyebrow at Jessy's challenging tone. Jessy's face remained impassive. Finally, Celeborn smiled and said, "I think you have had enough from this slave driver for the day."
Jessy flushed and looked accusingly at Ondollo and Melui. They only shrugged.
Celeborn noted the progress of the sun, "We had best return. I fear we have missed lunch, and no doubt, Galadriel will be angry with me for delaying you." He held out his hand and Jessy accepted it. "I am quite proud of you. I think you will be ready."
Jessy gave him a puzzled look, but he refused to explain.
~*~*~*~
The Hobbits were subdued, when Jessy joined them later that evening.
"What's wrong?" Jessy asked.
"We leave in a week's time," Sam answered softly.
"Does this mean we will never see each other again?" Jessy asked sadly.
"Of course not," Merry said with feigned cheerfulness, "you can come visit us in The Shire, when we are done with our journey."
"That's right," Pippin added.
"I would like that. The Shire sounds like a lovely place." Jessy smiled, though her heart was not behind it.
"Why don't you come with us?" Sam said suddenly.
"What?" Frodo asked incredulously. "Sam, have you forgotten what happened."
Sam paled as he remembered the reason why Jessy never visited them at their encampment. "I am sorry, Jessy. I didn't mean to …" His voice trailed off.
Jessy draped an arm over his shoulder and squeezed it lightly. "It's okay, Sam. Besides, it's not like I could just waltz out of the city with you. I don't think Aragorn would allow that, even if Celeborn and Galadriel did."
"We are leaving by boat. Legolas told us this afternoon." Frodo added quietly. "I mean, we would have to hide you under our packs."
"That's a brilliant idea, Frodo!" Merry said brightly.
"What are you talking about?" Jessy eyed Merry, not quite liking the look of mischief in his eyes.
Merry looked over his shoulder at Ondollo and Melui, who were deep in conversation with some of their fellow guardsmen. He motioned for the others to huddle closer, before he continued in a low whisper. "We can hide her under the packs in Gimli and Legolas' boat."
Jessy thought a moment, before shaking her head. "It would never work. Even if I waited until you stopped for the night to show myself, we would be close enough that Aragorn would just turn around and take me back."
Sam was thoughtful for a moment, "Not if you waited until we were several days out."
Jessy snorted, "Sam, I do have to eat sometime besides having other needs."
"We can bring you food. As for the other, if we volunteer for a watch, you could get out of the boat while the others are asleep."
Pippin got a serious look before asking, "What about Boromir?"
Jessy shuddered at the mention of his name. "He could be a problem. This whole plan is foolish."
"He can't touch you, if he is never alone with you. If you stay close to us, it shouldn't be a problem." Sam said.
The five conspirators continued to plot into the night until they had what seemed to be a fairly good plan except for one major detail -Getting Jessy into the boat unnoticed by anyone else.
~*~*~*~
"Is something wrong?"
Jessy shook herself mentally before turning to look at Galadriel. She had been lost in thought, trying to think of a way to secret herself into the boat. "No. Why do you ask?" She was a little unnerved by Galadriel's piercing glance.
"Oh. It might be the fact that you just sewed that shirt cuff complete shut." She said with a faint smile.
Jessy looked down and groaned. Picking up a seam ripper, she began to take out the offending stitches. "Frodo and the others are leaving tomorrow. I was just thinking about how much I'd miss them." Especially if we can't figure out a way for me to go with them, she thought to herself.
Galadriel continued to embroider, seeming to accept Jessy's explanation. "I think it would be best if you stay here tonight, instead of visiting with the Hobbits."
Jessy's hand paused and she stared at Galadriel. "But they leave tomorrow, and I want to say goodbye."
"You will have plenty of time tomorrow. I will send Ondollo to Frodo with a message that you will meet them alone in the morning by the boats."
Jessy frowned but said nothing. So much for going with them, she thought. Her heart sinking at the prospect of being left behind. She hadn't realized how much she wanted to go on this little adventure even with the threat of Boromir.
~*~*~*~
The evening passed slowly for Jessy as she sat near Galadriel in the throne room. Around her, the Elves seemed to be having some sort of going away party for Legolas. She watched him from across the room; she had forgotten how handsome he was, even in comparison to his kin. She sighed, bored out of her mind. She never did get a handle on the Elven language, and most of the Galadrim didn't speak English.
She was just about ready to beg Galadriel to let her go when Legolas approached her.
"May I?" He indicated the empty seat next to hers.
"Sure." She said quietly.
"I see that you have settled in nicely." His eyes swept over her.
Jessy shifted in her chair, suddenly uncomfortable in his presence. She reminded herself silently that he would never see her as anything more than a young, plain, mortal girl.
Legolas thought the change in her was remarkable. The light green gown she wore was very becoming. She was not the little waif they had dragged through Moria only two months before. He reached up and captured a curl of her hair in his finger. "You cut your hair. I like it."
Jessy blushed. "Thank you. It took me forever to convince Galadriel to let me cut it."
At Jessy's inadvertent reminder, Legolas looked over to his hosts. Galadriel was deep in conversation with Haldir, who had returned from the Northern Fences, but Celeborn was watching them carefully. Legolas nodded in respect and turned his attentions back to the blushing girl beside him. He wished that they had met under different circumstances; he would have liked to gotten to know her better. She seemed a woman and child all rolled into one.
"I am glad you are staying behind. You will be safe here. Perhaps when our mission is over, I will come back for a visit."
Jessy's blush now had more to do with a guilty conscious than Legolas' attention. "Sure," she stammered, "that would be nice."
Legolas gallantly raised her hand and brushed it lightly with his lips. "Until then." Then he rose and walked over to a group of Elves by the musicians.
"You seem quite taken with him."
Celeborn's remark pulled Jessy out of her reverie. "As you well know, I am mortal and nothing can change that. A fact that I am sure he is well aware of. I know that he was just being kind, and I have little confidence in his returning here to visit with me."
Celeborn frowned at her. "You know little of Elves, child. Do not be so quick to judge him. His path lies with the Ringbearer which is why he has avoided you for now."
Jessy rolled her eyes and kissed Celeborn lightly on his cheek. "Gee, Dad, I don't think you're gonna marry me off that easily." She said sarcastically.
Celeborn chuckled, a twinkle in his eyes.
~*~*~*~
The night wore on, and try as she might, Jessy was unable to slip away to bed. Every time she tried, either Celeborn or Galadriel would pull her into a conversation. Finally before dawn, the party seemed to break up and Jessy followed her wards into the common room.
She yawned and dropped onto one of the couches. "I don't know how I'm supposed to stay awake to say goodbye to Frodo and the others."
"There will be time for sleeping later, now it is important that you listen to all we say. We know about the plan you and the Hobbits have come up with."
Jessy sighed, "Does nothing escape your attention?"
Galadriel laughed lightly, "I foresaw that you would leave us. Your destiny lies with the Hobbits, but I do not know the outcome. Celeborn and I could only help you prepare for it as much as possible. I had hoped you would be more adept at learning our language, but other than that, you have progressed well."
Celeborn walked into his and Galadriel's room and returned with a large bundle. Sitting in a chair to Jessy's left, he handed her the bundle.
Jessy slowly unwrapped the gray cloth to reveal a pile of clothing and several long individual wrapped bundles. The clothing was a perfect replica of the Marchwarden's uniform in her size, the cloak having been used to wrap the other items. A pair of sturdy leather boots completed the outfit. Setting the clothing aside, Jessy next unwrapped a bow and quiver. Her breath caught at the sight of the bow, it was much more ornate than her practice bow. The final item Jessy unwrapped caused her to look up sharply at Celeborn. It was an ornate sword in a black and gold scabbard.
"Time grows short, child," Celeborn said not answering the question in her eyes.
Jessy nodded and grabbing the clothes and weapons went to her room to change. She had just finished, when Galadriel entered carrying a small leather backpack. "I have packed a few thing that you will need including some lembas bread." She handed the pack to Jessy, and then retrieved the silver circlet from the bed where Jessy had placed it. "This is yours, child. You are still our ward, and this marks you as such."
Jessy smiled and put the circlet back on, and then, followed Galadriel from the room.
~*~*~*~
She followed her wards as they led her to the river's edge where three boats awaited them. Ondollo and Melui stood next to a pile of packs near the third boat.
Galadriel handed Jessy a piece of parchment, folded and sealed with scarlet wax. "Give this to Aragorn when he discovers you."
Jessy tucked the parchment into her pack. She was having second thoughts about this whole idea.
Galadriel sensed her reluctance and hugged the girl tightly. "All will be well, you are meant to go."
Jessy nodded, trying desperately to fight back her tears. She pulled away from Galadriel and was immediately pulled into Celeborn's arms.
"Remember all that I have taught you, it will serve you well."
With her goodbyes said, she walked to the third boat. Curling up in the bottom of the boat, Ondollo covered her with a piece of gray cloth. Ondollo and Melui covered her carefully with the awaiting packs.
