Chapter Eight

"My mother was a kind and gentle soul, a child of nature as I am. She looked as I do now, only in her eyes could you see her true age, for they were marked with wisdom. Her eyes were like the Lady's, filled with knowledge she was willing to share with anyone wanted to hear of it." Silvy stopped speaking for a moment, memories of her mother clouding her vision. She shook her head and took another deep breath to strengthen her will.

Haldir shifted slightly as he waited for Sarafina to continue.

"She was very kind, never harsh or rude to others even when they treated her badly. She was the same way with me. Whenever I got in trouble, she used the one trick that can make any kid feel bad. She never physically disciplined me, only sat me down and told me that she was disappointed in me. That alone was punishment enough. She taught me everything I know about the craft, nature, the world and life itself. I will forever be grateful for all she taught me. Her voice was like a whisper of water over a smooth stone, always quiet and soothing, but strong. She was…was my world and now that she is gone, it feels colder and empty." Silvy sniffed quietly and waited for a moment before continuing the sad tale.

"I was away at school when I received the call telling me that I needed to come back to identify her body. I didn't even know she had gone missing. I had been so busy with classes, I hadn't had the time to call her for days. I remember walking into the morgue, and the first thing that hit me was the smell of chemicals. It was so strong, completely overpowering and I almost lost my stomach. The detective and I walked over to box 1047 as the doctor pulled out the tray. He slowly unzipped the bag, leaving me in complete disbelief. She…had been beaten, raped and mutilated. I could barely look at her, and when I did, it didn't even look like my mother. Her once lively face was pasty and blue, eyes closed to never open again. It looked more like a wax doll than my mother. Only one thing remained the same after death. Her hair remained as red as the sunset. She was buried in the forest behind our home with me and her coven in attendance, so she could become one with nature after death."

Silvy's eyes clouded with tears. It had been the first time since her mother's death that it really struck Silvy that she was gone and never coming back. She still hoped and prayed that it would all be a bad dream and that she would wake up at any moment. Silvy's eyes slid shut as she turned to Haldir. When she opened them again, tears blurred her vision, "What...pains me the most is knowing who did it and not being able…to do anything about it." The words hung in the air as her voice faded away, tears finally falling. Haldir watched Sarafina cry, unsure of what to do. *Gods, what have I done?* Haldir asked himself quietly as he caught her eyes glistening with fresh tears. He watched, mesmerized by the emerald green color that had darkened to the point that they were almost black. He watched as she held his gaze for a moment longer before turning her face away towards the night sky, tears running down her face like liquid silver in the moonlight.

Silvy was unnerved by the look in Haldir's eyes and turned away to avoid his seemingly knowing stare.

Haldir hated to see anyone cry and did the only thing he could think of. He scooted closer and wrapped an awkward arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer. "I did not intend to distress you with remembering bad memories. Please do not cry."

Silvy sniffed but said nothing, angrily wiping her tears away. She didn't want to cry in front anyone, especially someone like Haldir, it made her feel weak and powerless.

Haldir felt her stiffen under his arm and tried to think of something he could do to make her feel better. It became apparent that since he gotten her to reveal something personal, he felt it was his turn to reveal something to her, something to show her he could somewhat understand her feelings. He tightened his arm enough to hold her still but to not make her feel trapped, "Galadriel used to bring me here after my parents had been killed, when I and my brothers were children. I would sit here for hours crying my eyes out. After my final tears were shed to join the ever flowing waters, I always felt weak and exhausted, but relived. I could only cry here, for outside I had to be the strong one, the one everyone could depend on without fail. I had to be strongest for my brothers, who were very young and did not understand all that had happened. So you see, I too know what it is like to lose one's parents. Maybe not in a such a cruel manner, but basically the same. I apologize for making you cry."

Silvy moved away from Haldir to look at him with a new respect. *so that is why he acts this way.*

Silvy gave him a watery smile, "There is no need for apologies. It was better for me to tell someone everything than to keep it bottled up inside. I don't think I could ever be as strong as you are." She smiled when she saw Haldir blush at her comment. "Thank you, although sometimes I think it's bad for anyone to keep anything locked away for too long."

Silvy nodded her agreement while wiping away the last traces of her tears. They sat in silence, each lost to their own thoughts and memories. Silvy jumped when she saw Haldir raise his hand to cup her heated cheek.

Haldir no idea why he felt so drawn to this young human girl. He turned her face towards his, her eyes rising to meet his. Ice blue gazed down into forest green, too many emotions to name floating back and forth between them. "Sarafina," Haldir whispered quietly before brushing a ghost of a kiss across her lips.

Her slid eyes closed leaving Silvy unsure whether Haldir had really kissed her until she felt his lips return, firmer this time. When she didn't pull away, Haldir tightened arms around her and intensified the kiss. His tongue snaked out and brushed along her lower lip causing her to gasp. He took advantage of her surprise and swept his tongue inside her mouth. She tasted sweeter than the finest wines of Imladris.

Silvy had never been kissed so thoroughly before. No man from her world had ever been as gentle yet as possessive in the same moment. She brought her hand up and touched his soft hair, letting it run over her fingers like water. She sighed softly and melted against Haldir.

Haldir shivered as she ran her fingers through his hair but when she melted against him, he realized how much he wanted her. He looked down at her flushed cheeks, eyes closed as her chest heaved slightly with her breath. *what have I done?*

Silvy felt Haldir tense and opened her eyes slowly, "Haldir what's wrong? Did I do something wrong?"

Haldir just stared down at her and said nothing for a moment. He began to back away slowly, "I am sorry, I should not have taken such liberties with you." He turned and ran off into the night, leaving a bewildered Silvy in the glade.

She brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them as she tried figure out what made Haldir run away from her. When no answer came, she began to cry quietly unsure of what to do or how to get back to her rooms. So lost was she in her misery that she did not hear the approach of another, "What troubles you so Ai'aer?"
