Chapter Four
Haldir, on the other hand was still stomping around the mallorn trees trying to release his anger. He wanted to shout to the Valar, but doubted it would be very wise. He decided the best way to relieve his tension and anger was the practice his archery. He smiled slightly and made his way to the training grounds. When he arrived, he found it empty, much to his joy. Even though he trained others on a daily basis, he would always prefer being by himself. Haldir took his place in his customary spot, removed his cloak and set an arrow to his bow. When he felt his concentration was at it's peak, he closed his eyes and released.
He opened his eyes only when he heard the arrow's thunk as it hit the target. He looked down the range, only his eyes betraying any emotion. It was dead center, as expected. He gave one last glance before firing every arrow in his quiver. For each shot, he made only slight adjustments so the arrows would land in a circle around the center arrow. When the last one had been fired, he stopped.
He rolled his shoulder, welcoming the dull ache as a way to distract his thoughts. *surely she could not have meant what she said perhaps she just did not understand how things were here. wait why do i care what she thinks* He shook his head, trying to figure out why he would care at all about the girl as he walked down the range to retrieve his spent arrows. Each arrow was perfectly in place as a well trained archer's would be. Once they were replaced in his quiver, he decided to make his way to the bathes, if Sarafina was done with them first.
~*~*~*~
Silvy sighed as the heat of the water relaxed her to the bones, but the events of earlier kept replaying through her mind. She picked up the small bottle of soap off the ledge and poured s small bit in her hand. She sighed as the smell of jasper, hazel and sandalwood floated through the stream as she lather her hair. * i didn't mean to offend him, it's just the way i was taught.* All thoughts were washed away with the soap and bubbles from her hair. Once it was rinsed clean, she made quick work of washing herself. Once that was done, she stood and stepped out of the tub. She grabbed a towel lying on a table nearby.
She dried herself off quickly and set to the impossible task of drying her hair. It took about a half hour before she finished as she wrapped the wet towel around her body and tried to find her clothes. She began to panic when she found her pajamas were missing. "Ca… Caranheledwen?" The elf came rushing in, thinking that Sarafina had hurt herself some how. "I can't find my clothes. I have nothing to wear."
Caranheledwen sighed loudly, "The Lady sends you a night gown and robe for you to sleep in while you clothes are washed and repaired." She handed Silvy the robes and made her way back outside. "I'm sorry. I didn't see them." Caranheledwen stopped at the and nodded slightly before slipping back outside. She slipped on the robe and gown quickly, noticing she had no shoes or slippers to wear. She ignored it, figuring that walking barefoot was the least of her worries. She laid the towel down over the table so it would dry and made her way to the door.
She bent down to grab her bag and found it wasn't there either. *maybe they put it in my room.* She opened the door the find the elf locked in a passionate embrace with another male elf. Silvy smiled and coughed loudly behind her hand. The guilty pair sprang apart, a healthy blush painting their puffing cheeks. Caranheledween cursed her own stupidity in her mind. *now the lady will have my head. gods what am i to do* "I'm sorry my lady. It's just that I have not seen Carnegwathion in many weeks. He's just come back from border patrol and I never want to let him go." Silvy smiled, understanding young love. "I don't mind. If you will just kindly point out the way to my room, I'll you two in peace." Caranheledwen's mouth fell open in shock, surely she would get reported for this indiscretion? "My ladyship is not offended by my behavior? You will not tell the Lady?" Silvy again smiled, "Of course not, Please call me Silvy or Sarafina. May the gods bless you with a happy and fruitful union." Caranheledwen smiled warmly at the human for the first time in the entire evening, deciding she liked Sarafina already.
"Thank you Sarafina, you can't know what this means to me. To get to your talan, walk straight 20 paces, turn left and walk another 25 paces and you should see a staircase. Go up as high as it goes, your room is at the very top. I will come to attend you in the morning." Silvy nodded "Thank you and have a wonderful evening." Caranheledwen nodded and turned back toward her lover. Silvy smiled again and tried to find the way to her "Talan" as Caranheledwen had called it. She was surprised to find the ground very soft and springy under her feet, unlike back home. She frowned at the thought of everything that could be happening there without her knowledge. *i wonder what the coven is up too?*
Haldir was entertaining the thought of a warm bath when his thoughts were interrupted by a muffled curse and loud stomping noises. He rolled his eyes as he recognized the owner of the voice. Sarafina. He listened closely while she mumbled about not finding her talan. *so she can't find her talan, huh wonder if i should help her out a bit.* He grinned mischievously as a plan formed in his mind. He knew it was childish but couldn't help himself.
He crept over to the bushes and bent down waiting for the proper moment to spring out at her. When she glanced his way, he sunk lower not making a sound. Silvy was getting annoyed and scared. She couldn't find her way and she had no idea where she was. She couldn't call for help, Caranheledwen was busy and she had no idea where Haldir was. Now she felt eyes upon her, hungrily watching her every move. She tried to shake them off, but the feeling wouldn't go away. She shuddered, remembering the way Haldir had been watching earlier in the day when she had first arrived.
She started at every sound trying to find some semblance of direction but having no luck. She looked the stars for guidance but they were not much help when hidden behind the canopy of tree leaves. *oh goddess help me. give me some direction or a sign.* Little did she know trouble was about to find her. Haldir was enjoying every minute of Sarafina's confusion, finding it very amusing. He watched as she turned away for a split second giving him the opportunity to jump out and grab her by the shoulders. She jumped away, eyes wide, looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights. He stood watching her, showing no emotion though laughter bubbled just below the surface.
"I warned you about being out after dark. It is dangerous and….." he stopped in mid-sentence to find Sarafina holding a small dagger aiming for his throat. Her eyes were wide and looked nothing like they had before. Haldir's own eyes widened as he recognized the threat and realized that it was his own dagger from his belt. Silvy was breathing hard, ready to take out whatever had jumped her. She reached to grab whatever weapon was available and held up to the threat, trying to protect herself. She gasped as she found Haldir standing in front of the knife. She withdrew it quickly.
"I'm sorry. There was no reason for that but you frightened me." Silvy looked down, embarrassment coloring her cheeks. Haldir was still in shock, no one had ever managed to pull a weapon on him so fast without him ever noticing the movement. "It's alright...I shouldn't have jumped out at you. I was only trying to show you what can happen if you wonder around in the dark by yourself." Silvy only nodded and handed him the dagger back. Haldir took it and tucked in back in his belt.
Haldir was embarrassed as well. *how could i have been so stupid and childish* "Are you having trouble finding your talan?" `Yes," came the quiet response. "Come let me show you the way." Gently, Haldir cupped her elbow to steer her along. Silvy noticed immediately after he touched her the warmth that seemed to flow through her. She wondered if Haldir felt it too, but said nothing for fear of further embarrassing herself. Haldir noticed the connection as well, wondering what made such a thing happen. They walked in silence with him guiding the way, each lost to their own thoughts.
Soon though, they came to a stop at the base of a large tree with stairs curving gently around the trunk. He let go of her elbow, snapping the connection. "Thank you Haldir for showing me the way." "Good night Ai'aer." He watched her climb up the stairs and step into her talan and only left when he was sure she was safe inside. Silvy was flattered but bewildered by Haldir's sudden change in behavior but decided not to say anything. She smiled as she sat down at the vanity, clicked her fingers to light the candle sitting there and began to brush out her still damp hair. Once it was a shining river down her back, she laid down in her bed and settled in for a peaceful nights sleep completely forgetting her troubles for the time.
