Chapter Three

Haldir was fuming inside. *how dare she speak to me in such a manner she is intruding in my forest and yet she feels she is the one wronged.* Haldir threw a glance over his shoulder, finding the girl was some distance behind him, bending close to the ground studying something. He sighed loudly and turned, intent on making her catch up. "My lady we must be on our way .The lady awaits and doesn't like….." Silvy looked up from the object with tears streaming down her face. In her hands she held a silver circlet that had been trampled.

Haldir only stared at her, not knowing why such a thing would upset her so. "Umm…. Why are you crying? Are you hurt?" "No…*sniff*…I'm sorry for making you stop and turn around." Silvy glanced back down at the hunk of crumpled metal in her hands. The once beautiful Celtic circlet had been her mother's when she was a girl and belonged to her mother before that. Now it was nothing more than a ruined relic, damaged beyond repair. "It…it was my mother's. She died just recently and gave it to me when I was only 10. Now it's…it's… destroyed."

Haldir stared at her for a moment longer before understanding why she was saddened. He had never known his parents either, but unlike her he had only tales and stories told to him by the elders. So in reality, he had nothing to lose like she had. He sighed inwardly, reached out his hand to her and waited for her to take it. When she did, they both felt a jolt of warmth spread out from their fingers, up their arms and spread throughout the rest of their bodies. Her hand was warm and small in his, soft but strong. He gently hauled her up to her feet.

She was surprised at the kindness of him offering her his hand but said nothing. He let her straighten up before letting go of their joined hands. Haldir noticed immediately the absence of warmth and almost reached out to take her hand again, but stopped himself. Silvy stood stock still, looking down at the circlet. "I am sorry for your loss, but we must be moving on. Darkness is coming soon and we do not want to be caught out here, no matter how good of guards we have on duty."

Silvy nodded numbly and followed his lead, though this time they moved at a more comfortable pace for her. Haldir was unsure how to proceed, having choosing to never deal with people for this precise reason. Haldir had long ago closed off his emotions with an iron lock, thinking that in the end he would benefit by never having to worry about anyone but himself and his brothers. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and found her still studying the mass of twisted silver, sniffing occasionally.

Silvy was unable to think about anything. Her mother would be so disappointed in her lack of care for the treasured family item, but it was too late to worry about that now. They walked for a long distance in silence before Haldir finally spoke up. "I don't know if I have the right to ask this, but may I please have your name…,so I may tell it to the Lady when we arrive." Silvy nodded and spoke quietly. "Sarafina Celeste DeSilva, but most people call me Silvy or Sara." Haldir nodded, repeating the name to himself in his head.

Not another word was spoken, each lost in their own thoughts. When Haldir came to a sudden stop, Silvy's head jerked her head up to find they had come to a large clearing that lead down hill to a large grove of trees. She looked over to find Haldir all but glowing with pride as he announced where they were. "Caras Galadhon. The heart of Elvendom on earth and one of the only things I would die to protect." Silvy flashed a quick smile, seeing how happy Haldir appeared to be home. They made they way down hill to the gates where they were stopped. Haldir raised his hand to stop whatever the guard was saying and quickly said something to them. They bowed their heads and stepped back respectfully allowing them passage. "They are only doing their jobs. Times are dangerous and becoming ever more so. We rarely let anyone pass the borders. You're the first to have done so in many months." Silvy nodded, "May I ask what language you speak when you talk to them and how come you and I can speak but they can't." "We speak a form of elvish called Quenya and there are very few who can speak Westron."

Silvy almost laughed out loud. Elves? Elves aren't real, they don't exist. *my god what happened to me was there something wrong with my tea?* "Did you say elves? Elves aren't real. Who are you and where am I?" Haldir stopped in mid step, thinking she was joking. *surely she would know of elves?* "I beg to differ Sarafina. Elves are real and you are among them now. Do you not believe what is before your very eyes?" Silvy was becoming angry with the man in front of her. *why does he continue to lie?*

"No, they are not. They are creatures from fairy tales told to children to put them to sleep at bed time." Haldir was becoming angry with this human. *how dare she say we are naught but a tale to be told, impossible.* "You'd best watch your tongue my lady before you lose it." "How dare you threaten me. I speak only the truth." Haldir whipped around, the look he sent Silvy stopped her dead in her tracks. "Speak to me no more, for you know not what you speak." Silvy glared back defiantly, not willing to back down no matter how scared she may have been. *my god, I think he really would kill me*

Haldir narrowed his eyes but said nothing. He turned away and walked up a set of stairs. Silvy had no choice to follow, feeling upset over what had just transpired between them. *just when we were getting some where, i had to open my big mouth* Silvy watched the man before her, anger rolling off of him in harsh waves. Silvy was about to offer him an apology when they came to a stop on a large platform. Haldir walked off to the side, never once glancing at Silvy. Silvy tried to get his attention when she felt a pair of eyes boring through her.

She glanced up to meet a pair of stunning blue eyes, even bluer than Haldir's but they had much more depth and expression to them. The gentle voice sounded in her head again. "So you are the one that angers Haldir." A light laugh followed, making Silvy want to laugh along. "Have no worries. He had much pride in his race and homeland. Sometimes I fear it will be the death of him." Silvy nodded and answered back," I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend him or your race. Where I come from, such things are only myth and story." Galadriel only nodded, knowing all too well the girls history.

Haldir was absolutely fuming. He had no idea why it would offend him so, many other's had doubted elves existed until he had proven otherwise. He tried to calm himself and was startled when the Lady's voice sounded inside his head. "Haldir, why are you thus angered. Such things have happened before. Why should what one young girl has to say bother you so?" "I would also like to know the reason, milady. Please forgive me for losing control of myself." "It is only right Haldir. It is good to see some emotion in your eyes. Please introduce me to our guest." " Of course, milady. Forgive me again."

When he felt he had everything back under lock and key, he spoke. "Milady, Sarafina Celeste DiSilva. Sarafina, this is Galadriel, Queen of the elves and the Lady of Light." Silvy curtsied for the Lady. She would have done so sooner if she had realized who she was. "Worry not child. I have had one of my lady's prepare you a bath and a place to sleep." "Thank you Milady. It is most kind of you to take in a stranger." " You are most welcome. Rest tonight for tomorrow we will have a talk and discuss why you are here." Silvy only nodded and curtsied again.

Galadriel turned her gaze back to Haldir. "Please escort her to the baths where Caranheledwen ready a bath and a fresh change of clothes. Then you may retire to your talan or whatever you wish to do." "As you wish, milady." Haldir bowed and turned to Silvy, deciding to be civil for the sake of the Lady. "Follow me, please." Haldir turned swiftly on his heel and was gone down the stairs before Silvy had taken her first. The last thing she heard before she descended the stairs was the musical tinkling of the Lady's laughter.

Silvy had to run to catch to Haldir. "Haldir…Haldir answer me, please." When he gave no response or showed any signs that he had heard her, she took the hint and stopped speaking. They walked in silence until they came to a stop in front of an enclosed area. "This is the bathes. When you are finished I'm sure Caranheledwen will take you to your talan for the night." With that final note, he stormed off into the night. Silvy would have called out to him but doubted whether he would listen or not. Silvy sighed and made her way into what she hoped was the bathes.

She was greeted by the smell of flowers coupled with spices. She closed her eyes and smiled at the mix of unidentifiable smells. "Excuse me?" A soft voice brought her out of her thoughts. "Would you be Sarafina?" Silvy smiled at the elf woman. She was tall, lithe looking with long blond hair and blue eyes. "Yes. You must be…Ca…Cara…" " Caranheledwen." "I'm sorry." "It's alright. The lady said you might want to bathe and change?" "Yes that would be lovely. Thank you" Caranheledwen smiled, "Everything you need is by the tub. Should need anything, don't hesitate to call." "Ok. Once again thank you for everything." Caranheledwen smiled and was gone.

Silvy smiled to herself and silently thanked the Lady for everything. She dropped her bag by the door and made her way to the steaming tub in the center of the room. She made her way to a shelf filled with many little jars and bottles. She sniffed around for a moment, trying to find what she assumed was soap with a smell she would enjoy. After choosing one that smelled of jasper, hazel and sandalwood, Silvy placed the bottle by the tub and slowly undressed herself. She sighed as she stepped into the perfectly heated water.
