Chapter One: Visions In The Mist
Sarafina Celeste DiSilva was like most young adults at 21. She was a college student majoring in Mythology and Tolkien Studies. She had many friends, but no one close enough that she would trust with her life. Once in a great while she would go out to parties, but more often than not she preferred silence and solitude. Only one thing seperated her from everyone else. She was a born and trained witch.
Her mother, before she had been killed, had been the leader of her own coven. Sarafina had been away at college and unaware of the the anger brewing just below the surface of the coven. It wasn't until her mother had died did she realize just how much danger they had been in. When Sarafina was called back to identify the body, she couldn't believe what she saw. Serena DiSilva had a died a cruel and tomented death. Mutilated, sexually assalted and defiled.
Once Serena was buried, her coven then had a meeting to decided who would assume Serena's now vacant postion as leader. Sarafina assumed she would be asked because she was her mother's daughter and that was the natural order of things, but this was not to be. Aya Jones, Serena's only enemy, volunteered and was accepted. Sarafina, Sara or Silvy as she was called, found it strange and worrisome that Aya was chosen over her but said nothing.
Aya's first act as leader was to banish Sarafina from the coven. "I hearby banish you, Sarafina Celeste DiSilva from this coven to never return. That is unless you wish to challenge me?" Silvy was smart enough to know when to back down from a fight she couldn't win. It tore at her heart, knowing that Aya had something to do with her mother's murder, but she could say nothing until she had proof. She quietly gathered her things, sent one last look around the coven and left the circle, knowing that one day, Aya would get what was coming to her and Silvy would be there to help it along.
~*~*~*~
Silvy made her way down to her favorite spot by the stream in the forest behind her childhood home. The trees grew tall and true, untouched by the evils of the modern world around them. Anyone who walked through them could feel the power and life all around whether they were a witch or not. Usually Silvy could find peace amoung the trees, but not today. Too many things weighed heavily upon her mind. After wakling for a short distance, she came to a clearing and turned to the left, following the sound of the small, clear stream that was the life blood of the woods.
When she arrived, she set down her and removed the necessary items for casting her circle. Sea salt(to prevent other witches from entering her circle), and her wand (birch with a rounded globe of clear quartz crystle at the tip). After laying her circle of salt, she set about casting her circle. "I call on Air, on Earth, on Water, and Fire to gaurd my circle and grant my desire. Here to protect and witness this rite, open my mind to the magic of night." She felt the barrier go up and relaxed a little.
"I call to Water, stream and sea, within her great heart life came to be. With your soft rain, bring no harm, no pain. I am Water and She is me as I will so mote it be." Silvy sighed as she felt the cleansing mist wash over her weary body and soul. "Help me find the peace I desperately seek. Make me strong when I feel weak. Show me I have to see, so I can shape my destiny. Visions in the mist come clear to me. As I will, so mote it be."
The mist surrounding Silvy grew thicker, swirling faster as the first image became clear. Her mother as a young witch, looking as Silvy did now. Red hair like a waterfall of flames down her back, skin as pale as Luna herself and eyes as green as the very carpet of moss she now stood upon. Silvy smiled as the image of her mother looked up from she was doing to flash her a quick grin. The image faded to black as another moved to replace it.
It showed Silvy at 7, sitting beside her mother in the forest watching her gather the items for a healing draught for a close friend. It had been the first time Silvy had ever seen her mother preforming her Craft. Silvy would later swear that she had never seen anything so beautfiul as the that simple moment in time. Her mother all but glowed with a light that came from within, waves of peace and love rolling off of her. The image faded to black once again as the next slid into view.
It was her mother again, but this time waves of fear, anger and betrayal flowed through Silvy. Serena had her wand in hand and was circling with another person. Silvy almost collasped at the strength of the emotions flowing through her. She was shocked to hear her mother's voice in her head. "Why? Why are you doing this? I have done nothing to harm you or bring about your vengence upon me or my daughter." The next voice was muffled, but Silvy understood the words.
"You have taken is rightfully mine. I have stood by and done nothing for too long. It ends now. After tonight, you and yours will forever be banished to the shadows and I will take my rightful place as leader." The black shape struck out at Serena catching her squarely in the stomach. The fisted hand pulled away, blood on the knife catching the light. The smell washed over Silvy, hot and coppery, making her nauseous. Serena fell to her knees, blood trickling through her tightly woven fingers. She looked over to Silvy, eyes still fierce but beginning to glaze.
With what strength she had left, Serena slwoly began to weave her final spell. "By dragons light on this Spetember night, I call to thee to give me your might. By the power of three I conjure thee, to protect that which is dear to me. As I will, so mote it be." A soft blue light radiated out from Serena as the attacker gave her a final wound, slashing her throat. Serena's eyes glazed as she fell. Silvy closed her eyes and willed the image away.
Another quickly filled it's place. Silvy saw herself lying on the ground, surrounded by a small group of people. All looked saddened and upset but one man in particular caught her eye. He was kneeling, holding her body to his chest, tears streaming silently down his face. His face, though half hidden by a curtain of silver blond hair, was beautiful. High, regal forehead sloping into dark delicately arched eyesbrows. Piercing, blue eyes that appeared cold and unfeeling, but beyond the surface lay a wellspring of unused emotion. Fear, anger, love and longing rolled through them.
Then a quiet voice slipped through. "Is she going to be alright?" "I don't know, Rumil. Haldir, is she going to make it?" The one holding just shook his head, his attention totally focused on her. "Meleth-nin, you cannot leave me. Please. I've only just found you." Silvy could almost feel his tears falling softly onto her cheeks. She heard herself answering his plea. "I leave not by choice, meleth-nin. Just remember the love we shared, even though we had it for only a short while. I'll hold you in my heart forever. You were my first and only. There will be no one after you."
Haldir tried to give her a smile, but the expression faltered and fell apart. "What will I do without you. Before you stepped into my life, I was empty and cold. You gave me warmth and showed me that I could feel. Without you now, life is not worth living." "Of course it is. You have much to do in life, Haldir. No matter what happens, we'll find each other again in another time and place."
Haldir squeezed her hand. "I trust you. I'll wait for you my love, no matter how long it takes. I'm sorry I didn't say this sooner but I love you." Silvy's eyes misted, even though she knew it wasn't real. "Thank you Haldir, thank you. I love you now and always." With that the image of Silvy passed on as Haldir bowed his head. The real Silvy sighed as the image faded to replace with a final image of her mother.
Serena stood still tall and proud in a white robe, surrounded by white light. The image was so bright Silvy almost couldn't look at it.
Serena's face held an expression of love, peace and contentment. "Mother..."
"Dear daughter. Do not comsume yourself with seeking vengence for my death. What happened to me was meant to be and will come back to her times three. Mother goddes has bigger palns for you. When you learn to love and to let go, you shall find the answer to all the questions you seek."
"But mother..."
"Daughter know that I love you and will always be with you."
"Mother....mother..."
The final vision slid away, leaving Silvy feeling drained and shaken. After giving thanks to Mother Goddess for her help and guidence, she closed her circle, gathered her items and headed home.
