Summary: During a border patrol, Haldir discovers a lone Nazgul horse and a strange visitor with an annoying attitude and some very spooky skills. Things unfold deliciously until a deception and a surfeit of pride cause them to separate. They are re-united at Helm's Deep with an entirely different outcome, of course. Horses and dragons and crows…oh, my!
Notes: Dedication - Hennaid to my friend Sulien for nagging me into this romp and forcing me to learn Sindarin (well, pidgin Sindarin); to Craig Parker for gifting us with his interpretation of Haldir, and to my amazing husband for being…well…amazing!

"We must speak of something I think you will not like," Haldir began one morning while they were still entangled from a dewy coupling.

"Ah," Illume attempted the foreign process of a pout. "You seek to soften me up with your attentions." She squeezed his member with her inner muscles, eliciting a groan from him. "…Then you will tell me you have tired of me and wish a tender Elven maiden for your play…or a dragon…or…"

"Aragorn…" He interrupted.

"You wish Aragorn?" She tapped her cheek in mock consideration. "Hmmm...He is very appealing. And I do think he has a great fondness for you. Only think of how he held you in his arms most tenderly when you died. Yes, we shall have Aragorn." Her eyes widened innocently. "You WILL share him, of course?"

Haldir placed a firm hand over her mouth. "Lady, I did not die and I do not share you. Not even with a King."

The Guardian lowered his hand and grasped her chin in tender fingers. "And King he will be," he continued solemnly. "He will have the care of this land, but he cannot do this alone. He needs help to defeat the Dark Lord. Those who are left in Lothlorien are leaving the bent world, as are Elven from all Middle Earth. Those who linger will be few, perhaps too few. I must stay and help. "

Illume gazed up into this dearest of faces and knew a brief moment of fear.

"I know."

"And you must go. I will join you when…"

"No."

Haldir pulled up onto his elbows, inadvertently driving his member deeper into her heat. He gritted his teeth against the pleasure and scowled down at her.

"Yes. You will go."

She propped herself up on her elbows, closing the distance he had created.

"I will STAY," she hissed. "Think you I am some milky, mewling Elf maid – too weak for combat, too pristine for the gore of the battlefield? I am Maia, my pretty Elfling. I learned the hunt and the kill from the Valar Lord Orome himself. And I WILL stay."

"You will GO, "Haldir snarled. "I cannot risk you. I LOVE you! I will not see you damaged again!"

"And I love YOU, you stubborn, arrogant, aggravating…" she cast about for an appropriately scathing epithet, "…nogotheg."

He stared at her and she stared back.

"Say it again."

"You stubborn, arrogant, aggravating…"

"No, the other..."

She pursed her lips defiantly.

"Illume." He pressed her back to the ground, lips hovering above hers. "Say…it…again."

She hesitated, and then breathed her words into his mouth.

"I love you."

Haldir savored the kiss and the admission it delivered. She was his! She had forgiven him his cruelty, and accepted him. He closed his eyes, near weak with relief.

Suddenly, a damp muzzle skidded up his naked buttock. He twisted and struck out, connecting with a handful of coarse, glossy black mane. A familiar voice was heard above him.

"Haldir, there is a dragon at the edge of the wood," Rumil observed, dismounting from the black.

Haldir eased himself free of Illume and stuffed her behind him. He glared up at Rumil and Rumil grinned down upon him, enjoying his discomfiture and eyeing his considerable erection.

"You are ever in this condition when we meet, brother. The lady's doing, I assume?" He bestowed a celestial smile upon Illume. "Mae govannen, hiril nin."

In answer, she snaked a hand over Haldir's bare shoulder. Rumil bent over it and kissed each knuckle with great ceremony, one by one.

"Have done," Haldir batted his brother's hand away and grabbed for the tunic he had removed from Illume before their play. He rose, pulling her to her feet and dressing her hurriedly. When he turned back he ignored his brother and grasped the black's muzzle.

"Suilaid, horse friend…I am glad to see YOU again." He placed an affectionate kiss on the velvety nose and received a fond wuffling of his chest in return. "And where is crow-friend?" The black sent him an image of the crow hopping about, playing with Dolen's tail while the dragon obligingly waved it to and fro.

"And YOU…" he began, turning to Rumil.

Humor flown, Rumil gave him no opportunity to scold. He clasped Haldir to him and buried his face in his hair.

"Gods, Haldir, "he whispered. "I feared you dead. The black brought such images to me. …Uruk-hai, thousands upon thousands of them. And we not there to battle this menace by your side…"

"I told you, brother. Your place is with the Lord and Lady."

"The same as is yours!" Rumil shot back.

Haldir pulled free. "No, Rumil. I…" he sighed and reached out to clasp Illume's hand, "…we have things yet to do here. You and Orophin must see to the safe passage of the Lord and Lady."

Rumil studied the pair. "You need us. You stay to help the man king, yet you have no bow, no sword, no knives, "he ran a finger down his brother's sleek chest," and no clothes. How can you help with just a horse and a crow?"

"And a dragon," Illume interjected, offering him a cat-fanged smile.

Rumil's eyes rounded.

"Yes! The dragon," he breathed reverently, distracted from his lecture. "Is she yours, lady? Have you seen her, Haldir? She is glorious! She talked to me inside my head! And she flies and can breathe fire!" His words were tumbling from him in his enthusiasm. "We were pursued on our course here, and she rose up from the forest's edge and laid flame to the band of Orcs at our heels! There was nothing left but ash! She was wonderful…"

"She is Dolen. Precious to my lady," Haldir lifted Illume's hand to his lips," and to me. She carried us out of Helm's Deep when I fell wounded and could fight no more."

"Fell wounded! Are you…" Rumil's jaw dropped. "You have ridden her?"

Haldir placed a finger beneath his brother's chin and gently tapped his mouth closed. "Yes. And I think she would fight for us, but I am loath to ask it of her…"

"Dolen will fight. Strong, very strong..."

Haldir and Rumil stared at each other then - as one - cast their eyes upward. The dragon was a brilliant shard of silver circling in the sky high above, but her voice was in their heads as if she sat beside them on the ground. Apparently, the ancient tales of dragons with dangerously acute senses were true.

"I wonder if she would carry me to fetch Orophin," Rumil mused. "We could be there, provisioned and back on the instant."

"Carry Rumil...Rumil nice-good," was the purring answer.

Haldir eyed at his brother speculatively. "Exactly what passed between you and Dolen on your meeting?"

Rumil grinned. "Well, there is this place just under her wing where she likes to be rubbed."

Haldir grinned back, "Yes, brother. I know of this place…"

Illume dug a sharp elbow into his ribs, glaring from brother to brother. "I do not know what she is saying to you, but I will not have my dragon-friend seduced by the pair of you and your sweet blandishments! We have things to do!"

"And Dolen wishes to help us, meleth nin," Haldir answered smugly. "She has agreed to take Rumil for provisions and to fetch our brother Orophin. Then we shall – all of us – go to the aid of the man king."

He tucked Illume into his side and smiled down at her. "We shall be the new fellowship. A Maia..." He kissed her deeply enough to have Rumil surreptitiously adjusting the fit of his leggings. "Three elves..." He pulled Rumil to him by his braid and pressed his lips to his brother's forehead. "A horse..." The black obligingly raised his muzzle to receive a similar salute. "A dragon and a crow..."

He cast his eyes skyward to watch Dolen cavorting high above with the crow pacing her every move like a tiny black dracling. Suddenly Haldir's eyes widened and a smile bloomed. Rumil laughed out loud.

Illume followed their gazes. "What? What is she doing?"

"She is singing to us, "Haldir chuckled. " Mimicing a stolen Hobbit drinking song, I think. She has changed a few words, clever miss."

And from on high was heard…

"Heigh ho, into battle we go
To win the fight and crush our foe.
Orcs may come, their blood will flow,
But still we have many miles to go.

Sweet is the thought of the true king's reign,
And our foe all swept from hill and plain,
So battle we now to make all free,
And when we're done…legends we will be."

Tale's End.
