Summary: During a border patrol, Haldir discovers a lone Nazgul horse and a strange visitor with an annoying attitude and some very spooky skills. Things unfold deliciously until a deception and a surfeit of pride cause them to separate. They are re-united at Helm's Deep with an entirely different outcome, of course. Horses and dragons and crows…oh, my!
Notes: Dedication - Hennaid to my friend Sulien for nagging me into this romp and forcing me to learn Sindarin (well, pidgin Sindarin); to Craig Parker for gifting us with his interpretation of Haldir, and to my amazing husband for being…well…amazing!
"Lady," Haldir bowed briefly. "The Hand Healer…have you seen her?"
Galadriel had sensed his desperation from across the forest and prepared herself for the unhappy audience she knew would follow. "Why do you ask this of me?" she responded neutrally.
"I would speak with her."
"Have you not spoken into her mind?"
Haldir's eyes slid away. "I …I have tried. I cannot."
The Lady gestured to the crow perched on his shoulder. "And her friend, can he not help you?"
Haldir slanted a look of disgruntlement at the bird. "He will not. He joins me on patrol and spots intruders for me. We hunt together. He is ever on my shoulder or following me about. But he will not tell me where she is."
The Guardian's frustration was a palpable thing. The Lady attempted to link with the crow and met a determined blankness. "I see," she said slowly. "The Healer must have been wounded deeply."
Haldir stepped forward urgently."Her arms…! Gods, I must find her…"
"No Guardian." The Lady placed a restraining hand upon his chest. "It is the wound to her heart of which I speak. Those who love her will shield her from further hurt."
"She is the Healer. How is it possible to hurt one such as she is? All she has seen…all she has done…She is ancient!"
"She is timeless, Haldir. Not heartless. She chose you and you rejected her."
"No! I was angry that she did not trust me with her secrets. I did not mean for her to leave me. I need…" Haldir stared into the Lady's cerulean eyes, opening his mind fully to her. She stifled a small gasp at what she encountered there.
"I love her," he said simply.
Galadriel cupped his cheek, wishing to give comfort in this comfortless situation. Haldir tilted his face into her touch. For a moment he allowed his eyes to close and his mind to wander back to the glade…the joy of those few short days. Then he straightened. As Galadriel watched, he collected himself into the dangerous, remote creature her people had come to rely upon to keep them safe.
"Lady, I thank you for the audience." He executed a brisk nod and swept from the room.
