Summary: During a border patrol, Haldir discovers a lone Nazgul horse and a strange visitor with an annoying attitude and some very spooky skills. Things unfold deliciously until a deception and a surfeit of pride cause them to separate. They are re-united at Helm's Deep with an entirely different outcome, of course. Horses and dragons and crows…oh, my!
Notes: Dedication - Hennaid to my friend Sulien for nagging me into this romp and forcing me to learn Sindarin (well, pidgin Sindarin); to Craig Parker for gifting us with his interpretation of Haldir, and to my amazing husband for being…well…amazing!
"She was smallish, Lady, unremarkable in appearance. She wore an Elven cape and was…sitting in Haldir's lap. He seemed to have been…ah…feeding her."
Galadriel had sensed the female's presence in the area some time ago and had begun reading Haldir's thoughts with great interest over the last few hours.
Her lips twitched. Poor Rumil... His haughty demeanor hid a kind heart and a particular affection for his austere older brother. He had not wished to report on Haldir's uncharacteristic behavior with the stranger, but a summons from the Lady could not be denied.
"She is wounded and needs time to heal," the Elf queen counseled softly. "When Haldir determines her to be fit, he will bring her to me. Until then, I trust you and Orophin to execute his patrols and to help the Guardian in any manner he requires. "
"Yes, Lady..." Rumil bowed with his hand to his heart and backed away. Galadriel watched him leave, many thoughts alive in her mind. Haldir and her old friend… She had not foreseen this pairing, but found she favored it greatly. There were now things to set in motion…

Haldir was patrolling the edge of the Wood where he had first found the female when his head was suddenly filled with Galadriel's voice.
"Guardian, the visitor is known to me. You must keep close watch over her. When she is healed and rested, bring her to Caras Galadhon."
He hastened swiftly in the direction of the glade-by-the-pool, overtaken by a strange urgency to see the female. He had hoped to study her longer before deciding if she should be brought before the Lord and Lady. Now that decision was made. What if they ordered the female expelled from Lothlorien?
The Guardian paused for a moment, hand against a tree trunk, staring into middle distance. Hundreds of years of unwavering loyalty were suddenly at war with a new instinct to protect this female, claim this female!
"…keep close watch…when she is healed and rested…" Galadriel's words came back to him. He had time. He would find a way to deal with this. After all, what threat could his little nogotheg be to Lothlorien?

Dusk found the Guardian beneath the pool-side flet, stroking the black's velvety muzzle. "So, horse-friend, have you cared well for her?"
The horse rubbed his face against Haldir's chest then nibbled at a dangling braid. "Hannon le, mellon," the Elf said softly as he withdrew his damp lock from the black's mouth. "Idh vae... I will see to her now."
Suddenly, a big black bird flew from the horse's mind into that of the Elf. The horse was sending an image first of the bird falling wounded from a flock of crebain, then of the creature healed and perched on the female's shoulder.
"Ai, another 'friend...' It is well that you warned me…else I might have killed it. Again, hannon le..." With a final pat to the great beast's forehead, the Guardian ascended to meet this new intruder.
The female was asleep yet again, and, true to the horse's warning, a gleaming black crow perched on a small branch just above her head. Her 'family' seemed to be growing, and - if the suspicious stare of this individual was an indicator - its members were fiercely dedicated to looking after her.
The Guardian tested the new visitor's mind with an image of the female sitting in his lap drinking from the flask.
The bird cocked his head and countered with an image of the Elf falling over the side of the flet with a big, black crow clawing at his face.
Haldir sighed and returned an image showing him defending the female from an Orc.
The crow made a rude coughing noise, then lifted off and settled lightly on the Elf's shoulder. He turned his glossy head to one side and the other, then - apparently satisfied - grasped a lock of Haldir's hair in his beak and carefully preened it.
Haldir stroked his polished breast feathers, and transferred him back to the branch.
"Mae govannen, my flying friend...I appreciate your vigilance. But, between you and that beast below, I will shortly have no hair left to cover my head."
The bird chortled softly and turned away to flex his wing feathers.
"Haldir…?" The female was stirring.
The Guardian took a moment to enjoy the sound of his name on her lips before answering. It was a small thing, but unaccountably pleasing.
"Here, hen anor. Are you hungry?" He crouched beside her and laid a gentle hand against her cheek. She leaned into the warmth.
"No, cold…"
Haldir lowered himself to the deck and pulled the drowsy female across his body. She settled into his heat, one leg slipping easily between his. This position aligned her hip with his groin and he found his flesh rising to the intimate pressure.
How quickly this creature was becoming a challenge to his legendary self-control. She had amused him. She had exasperated him. She had defied and disobeyed him. She had secrets he was determined to know. And now, even in sleep, her feral innocence was calling his body to join with hers.
He spent an uncomfortable night stoically resisting his inclination to share pleasure with his charge.
