Haldir heard Eliana's light step long before she entered the clearing behind him. He was lying flat on his back, gazing at the many stars that dotted the sky above Caras Galadon. There was much on his mind, and he could find no respite.A soft hand touched his shoulder. As he turned his head, Eliana's fingers brushed his cheek. A feeling of peace flooded his conscience, and he sighed. When she spoke, it was in soft Sindarin, free of sharp edges and harsh overtones.
"What troubles you, brave captain?" Eliana whispered, rubbing several strands of Haldir's silky golden hair between the pads of her fingers. She found the action comforting. A lament for Gandalf filled the air, and it was fraught with sadness.
"Much troubles me, sweet flower, but never you mind. It is none of your concern. I must face what is coming myself." Haldir tried to remain stoic as Eliana lay down next to him, curling her body around his own. In the end, it was impossible to resist his feelings for the human girl. He put an arm around her.
"Perhaps the captain wishes for some physical comfort this eve?" Eliana inquired hopefully, tracing circles on Haldir's tunic with her thumb. Haldir chuckled deep in his chest, and gaining some sense back, gently pushed Eliana away. He sat up.
"Eliana, you know we cannot." He paused, the silence pregnant in it's heaviness. "It would bind us for all time. I think not of myself, but of you. You should love someone who can give you human children, someone who will grow old with you. I would be wearisome to you. I will not allow your enslavement."
Haldir's gasp was audible as Eliana crushed her lips against his. He could not help but yield to her as her tongue slipped into his mouth. The kiss seemed to last forever, and Haldir knew he would cherish it for the rest of his days. But as the kiss ended, he stood and walked to the edge of the wood, staring back at Eliana for a moment with moonlit eyes. His face was woeful. They could never be.

"Haldir, please!" Eliana begged imploringly. "I do not feel good about this, please do not go!"
Haldir tried to hide his growing impatience. Eliana had been groveling after him for hours, trying to deter him from his expedition. Now, taut with frustration at his helplessness and at his inability to love Eliana, he turned on her.
"Eliana, you must listen to me! The Ents have left Fangorn, and they are marching towards Isengard. Theoden's people are hemmed in at Helm's Deep, and soon Saruman's entire army will be upon them. As elves, it is our duty to fight beside them. I am going, and that is final." He caught just a glimpse of her quivering lower lip and the tears glistening in her eyes before turning away.

Lord Celeborn stared thoughtfully at the young woman in front of him. She had been within his borders since she was a child, having been found by Elladan and Elrohir on one of their orc raiding rides. She had an excellent command of Sindarin, and she had even gained beauty and grace from the elves. Her long honey blonde hair had silver streaks in it because of the concentrated glow of moonlight surrounding the city, and her green eyes had a fierce determination in them that he admired. It had been a long while since one of his subjects had given him such trouble.
"Explain this to me once again, child," he said slowly, just to infuriate her. "You wish to travel to Helm's Deep to see Haldir because of some premonition you had? You are beginning to sound like my wife in her early days."
Eliana wanted to stomp her feet and throw a tantrum. Lord Celeborn was practically laughing at her. She fought back tears of anger and grief and fairly wailed, "My lord, I know it is outrageous, but I fear that if I do not see Haldir now, I never will again. Despite his refusal of my affections, I love him!" She could not keep the tears at bay any longer, and they spilled down her cheeks in a fresh waterfall of sorrow.
Lord Celeborn felt suddenly guilty. Eliana's feelings for Haldir were strong, and Haldir's matched hers in strength, though he did not care to admit it. He laid a strong hand on the girl's shoulder.
"Very well, Eliana. I will call for the horses. We leave within the hour."

March 2, 3018, in the Third Age of Middle Earth
Celeborn and Eliana dismounted their horses and let Gimli lead them through the underground caves in order to breach the castle walls. Haldir and his archers had stationed themselves along the wall to beat back the forces attempting to scale it. Oblivious to her own safety, Eliana tore onto the high battalions and searched for Haldir. Celeborn stayed in the shelter of the hidden stairway and watched.
"Haldir!" Eliana called, flinching as an orc's arrow landed inches from her leg. It was raining arrows as she moved towards Haldir, who she had spotted at the end of the line of archers. "Haldir!"
Haldir lowered his bow in shock. "Eliana?" He dropped the weapon and moved quickly to her, taking her in his arms. "Eliana, what are you doing here?" His eyes were brimming with apology. Eliana knew he was sorry for what he had said to her before he left.
"Haldir, I was so worried about you. I thought something terrible would happen … And I just had to see you one last time." She touched his lips reverently, and he nodded slowly. One kiss would do no harm. And she had come all this way.
As Haldir bent to touch her lips, he heard a sharp thwack. Eliana lurched in his arms and her ripe mouth opened in an expression of shock. Haldir's eyes widened and his entire body started to shake as he saw the arrow sticking out from the center of her back.
A thin trickle of blood came from Eliana's mouth as she slumped forward in Haldir's arms, and then he was screaming, holding her, shaking her, kissing her as Lord Celeborn raced to their side. As soon as he laid eyes on the girl, he knew it was hopeless. She was going to die.
"Oh Haldir…" Celeborn intoned. "I am sorry. I brought her here, this is my fault."
Haldir was choking on his tears. "No, my lord, this is my fault. I would not listen. I was too haughty to realize that what I had was right in front of me for the taking all along. And now it is too late."
Eliana's body went limp in Haldir's arms, and he began keening in a low moan. What he had spent years denying was now truly beyond his grasp. He did not know if he could bear it.
Suddenly, a bright light exploded forth from Eliana's body. Haldir held onto her tightly, as if he could keep the last vestiges of life in her if he didn't let go. But her body started to rise, back arched, hair flowing. She seemed to sway in the wind, and the light emanating from her body intensified until Haldir had to look away. When the light faded from the edges of his eyes, he saw Eliana lying limply on the ground. He rushed to her side.
Her long hair had turned completely silver, and all traces of the blood from her wound were gone. In fact, the wound itself had disappeared. Haldir gently touched her cheek. "Eliana? Eliana, please wake up. Love, look at me."
Eliana stirred and looked dazedly up at Haldir. "Haldir? What… what happened?"
Haldir shook his head. "I thought you were dead." He gathered her into his arms and held her tightly. "Eliana, I am sorry I refused you. I do love you, and I would rather spend one lifetime by your side than…" Haldir stopped speaking abruptly, and his fingers pushed several strands of Eliana's hair away from her right ear. Her pointed right ear.
Haldir gasped. "Eliana, my god, you are…" He pushed hair away from her other ear and marveled at the lovely girl sitting in his lap. "Eliana, you are an elf!"
"It is just as Galadriel said," Celeborn muttered, striding over to study Eliana for himself. "Just as she said."
Haldir looked up at his lord. "What did Galadriel say, my lord?" Celeborn smiled at Eliana and then looked at his captain.
"Galadriel once said the only way for a human to be granted immortality was through a selfless act of love. In coming for you and saving you from death, Eliana has completed such a deed." Celeborn turned his face to the horizon. Dawn was falling over Helm's Deep, but one bright star still lingered. A morning star. "By the light of a morning star, Haldir, she is changed! She is immortal."
Haldir looked down at Eliana and gently let his nose brush her face. She smiled and tucked herself firmly into his strong embrace. Haldir looked up at Celeborn and asked, "Do I have leave to take Eliana as my lifemate, Lord Celeborn?"
Lord Celeborn nodded. "Of course you do, Haldir. You will be wed immediately upon our return to Lothlorien."
Haldir looked happily down at his bride-to-be. "Thank you for saving me, Eliana. I am forever grateful to you, and I love you with all of my heart."
Eliana laid a hand over Haldir's heart. "Thank you, my love. I knew we would be together one day. My heart is yours for the taking."

In the ages to come, Haldir and Eliana never left Middle Earth. They also never left each other.
