I heard Aragorn's footsteps behind me, but didn't turn. He knew I was aware of his presence. I simply continued to stare at the lake, watching the ripples move across the surface. Ripples never end. They go on forever, even when you can't see them anymore. Just like elves. Just like me. And just like love.
His voice flowed over me like a song, low and rumbling in his chest. I love Aragorn's voice. It's so different from my own. Mine is light and airy, almost childlike or feminine. His is manly, and there is no doubt of his destiny in that voice. I slowly turn my head, blond locks wavering in the wind, and answer him. "You know this is my favorite place to be, Aragorn."
He's nervous. I have hypertuned senses; does he think I don't notice? He's running his hand repeatedly over the hilt of his sword. It's shining with the oils from his palm. I want to lick his hands. Quickly shaking that thought away, I smile and turn back to the lake. "And what else do you know, Ranger?" I ask softly, watching as a leaf falls into the water. Ripples...
It took me a moment to decipher his comment. I merely smiled at it's meaning. Taking advantage, I grabbed his hand, drawing him close to me as I pointed at the water. "Do you see the ripples, Aragorn? They go on and on. Don't you find it curious, how some things continue forever and others die?" Would he pick up on the sadness in my voice? Would he acknowledge what I knew he was nervous about and fill the void in my heart? I prayed to the forest that it would be so.
I noticed the recoil of his hand and tried to hide my disappointment. Did he not want me, or was he merely afraid? I thought it was the latter. I wanted him to want me. I truly did. Another leaf fluttered into the water, making two ripples meet in the middle. I glanced at Aragorn. "See how they meet?" I whispered. "Some feelings will never die, and some things are always tied to each other. Isn't it so?"
I grabbed his wrist. "Don't go, Aragorn. Please." He stared back at me, trying to disguise the hurt in his eyes. I sighed. "I know the way it is, Aragorn. But that doesn't change the way the ripples expand, does it? You can't change a ripple, only make a new one. See?" I dipped my finger into the water, watching the new ripple meet the old ripples. I let him see my desire undisguised. I didn't want him to leave without at least admitting what he felt.
"I understand," I said softly. "I understand more than you know. I understand more each time I imagine a future for us that will never be. I am not afraid to say that if I could make you mine, I would. No matter what it took. But it would hurt you too much, and you would not be... not be the man I love." I pushed loose hair behind my ears, and as my fingers brushed the tips, I shivered. Were it that Aragorn's hands touched me thus... But the ripples of our lives are never to fully meet.
