Prologue: A Star Will Shine At The Hour Of Our Meeting

c. 2500, in the Third Age of Middle Earth

Celebrian clutched the small bundle to her chest, gazing at her husband with an infinite sadness in her eyes. She had given birth to four children, and now all four were lost to her. Arwen was in Lothlorien with her grandmother, whom she had always been closer to than her mother. Elladan and Elrohir were off fighting orcs and would be fighting until every single one of the foul creatures had been dispatched from Middle Earth, Celebrian was sure. What Elrond was asking her to do was impossible. She could not let her fourth child, her second daughter, go.

"Please do not ask me for this," she sobbed, holding the sleeping baby to her breast. "Our children are all so distant, Elrond. Do not ask me to purposely distance myself from this one."

"It is the only way, Celebrian. I know it hurts, but it cannot be undone. He wants her, and the only way he will not get her is if we send her where he will never look for her. The enchantment will lift after 520 years, it cannot be made to last any longer. In that time, he will surely forget her. He may have even been defeated by then. But we cannot take the chance now, not when our defenses are so thin." Elrond pursed his lips and nodded. Even the one he loved with all his heart and more would not contest his word.

Elrond's wife gazed into the bright green eyes of her daughter, who had been born a mere day ago. Her body still ached from delivering her into the world, and now she was going to leave that world. Celebrian was convinced that she would never see her daughter again.

"I will name her Vanwe," Celebrian said sadly. "For she is lost to us, and I fear she will always be lost to me."

Elrond moved forward and held his wife gently, their youngest child cocooned warmly between them. "She will return and all will be well," he whispered. "Celebrian… I promise you this."

"You are a wise and powerful elf, Elrond. You should not make promises you cannot keep."

Vanwe lay on an altar bathed in light, looking avidly around her, as babies are wont to do. However, she was not aware of her mother crying as she watched the enchantment being performed, nor was she aware of her father standing stoically by, trying to be strong. Their lives were all going to change because of this, and he did not know if it would be for better or worse.

"Elen sila lumen omentilmo," Elrond whispered as he watched his beloved daughter disappear before his eyes. "A star will shine at the hour of our meeting, little Vanwe."

Vanwe was aware of incredible pressure, many voices, and harsh bright lights, not like the ones in her father's study. Those lights had been calm and beautiful. She began to scream as she slid into the waiting arms of a strange person clad in white. These people were not like her.

"Congratulations," she heard someone say. "You have a daughter."

c. 2510, in the Third Age of Middle Earth

Elrond watched as Celebrian's ship grew smaller in the distance, feeling the desperate pull of the sea as his wife sailed West. So much of him wanted to accompany her, but he knew he could not. Middle Earth's situation was becoming dire, and a great conflict was still to come. He must aid those who would fight in the approaching war.

As Elrond turned to begin his journey back to Rivendell, he looked up at the sky. Dusk was beginning to fall, and stars slowly appeared as Elrond gazed upwards. His glance fell briefly on a star that emitted a strange, purplish glow. One day, his daughter would return to him. He would see Vanwe again.
