~ 24 ~

The sun was setting behind them when they reached the border of the Black Lands. Raven stared apprehensively while the elves crouched beside her. The border was well marked here, the sands of the desert before them scoured black, as if burnt by a great fire. There were no bushes, or anything that looked alive, only glassy black rocks, black sooty soil and black heavy air that seemed to close around you once you crossed into it.

They slowly made their way into the lands, the sun still hot and soaking into the black rocks, heating the air further even though the sun was now setting. If the elves had thought the desert lands hot, this was worse yet. She stared around her, continuing into the barren land. It began to fold itself into craggy valleys of glittering ebony spires of glass, the silty soil dusting around her feet while she walked. She stared amazed at the elves where they walked before her, realizing suddenly that they left no footprints.

They stopped at a low rise when the sun began to sink behind horizon, the land before them dropping away below them. They stared in amazement at the large bowl shaped valley before them. It was as if a huge boulder had dropped out of the sky and smashed into the earth, leaving no remains of itself behind except for the impression left into the land. The valley lay deep, several hundred feet below them, and she crouched down in fear staring at the far walls.

The remains of what once was possibly a city lay across from them, metal grids glittered in the failing light. Black stone sucked in the light, and small flickers of flame began to appear as the shadows began to stretch across the valley. Wicked jagged spires rose above the valley floor, twisted wreckage of whatever had destroyed it. Whatever had happened had left its mark forever.

"What can you see?" Raven asked Haldir. He crouched beside her and she knew his eyesight would see what she could not.

"Orcs." He snarled, his hatred flashing through her head. She shook it to rid herself of his emotion. "They must live in what remains of the buildings on the far wall." He stared around the valley, noting the levels of buildings that managed to remain intact, built into the walls of the valley. This might have once been a smaller valley, the city flowing over and into the folds of the land, but now only a portion remained. What was left of the valley was pushed toward the rim, folded back like the petals of a rose, an ugly black rose.

"Do we have to go in there?" she asked seeing Celeborn frown.

"Nay, I do not think so. I am sure they know we come, and we will meet them on ground that they choose." Celeborn said quietly, turning to look at Haldir for agreement. "We must rest while we can, I cannot say what tomorrow will bring."

Haldir nodded, ignoring Raven but she knew his thoughts rested on her.

"You are not leaving me behind!" Haldir turned to her, his chin rising to stare at her haughtily. "I will do what I think best, Raven. Your task was to lead us here, and you have done so."

"I will make your life miserable, Haldir, if you think to leave me here. You forget what you can feel of me in your head." Raven growled.

"You would endanger both of us for such a small reason?" he asked hearing her sigh in frustration.

"No, you are right. I only do not want to be alone." He pulled her toward him, wrapping his arms around her and they sat staring out into the desolate darkness surrounding them.

They rested away from the edge of the crater, Haldir's elves standing guard only a few feet away. Raven curled into Haldir's side, trying to block the shadows that were beginning to brush her mind. She didn't know if he could feel them, but since they had come to the valley, the shadows had started to grow in her mind.

What did they mean, or foretell? Haldir had not explained all that he had spoke of to the Valar, but felt his concern every time they mentioned her, and the Valar Morgoth. Did he have some kind of control over her she was not aware of? She flinched as the thought bounced around her head, the shadows in her mind absorbing it. She glanced up at Haldir to find him looking at her in concern.

"What are you thinking, Raven, that makes you flinch and look so terrified?" he asked when she hid her face into his chest.

"He has some control over me, doesn't he?" Raven whispered, feeling Haldir tense, his arms tightening around her. "I feel shadows, Haldir, in my mind. I am afraid of what he can do now that we are closer."

Haldir reached down to grip her chin. "I will not let him hurt you, Raven. I fear he may have some control over your dreams, yet. I cannot stop him, but I think you have the strength to fight him as well. Do not allow his thoughts to overcome you."

Raven looked around Haldir to Lord Celeborn who sat a short distance away, catching the swift flash of concern on his face while he stared off into the distance.

"Lord Celeborn is worried over something." She said. Haldir glanced over to him.

"Yes, he has not been able to feel, or speak to the Lady since we crossed into the black lands." Haldir said watching Celeborn stare moodily at his feet. "He fears her safety, yet knows she is well. It is hard being together as long as they have to not feel her in his mind. It is something new to him and he had not yet adjusted to the emptiness. It wears on him, but he will not let it deter him."

"How do you know this?" Raven whispered, aware Celeborn could probably hear them.

Haldir sighed. "He has told me, he could not keep it inside. I have respected him for many many years, Raven. He has led us, along with The Lady for eons, and I have never seen a weakness in him. He has always been steadfast and courageous. But for once I think I can understand what he must feel, so bereft . I think he knew this, and it eased his worry to speak of it."

Raven nodded, snuggling closer yet, hearing Haldir laugh quietly. "You cannot get any closer than you are, Lirimaer."

Raven grinned running her fingers along the front of his tunic, tracing the folds of the cloth as they crossed his chest. He caught her fingers in his hand, kissing the tips of them and leaned against her.

"I know what you are thinking, but we cannot. I will not sully what we have here in this dark land." He murmured and she sighed. He kissed her forehead and she wrapped her arms around his waist, closing her eyes to sleep.

He held her tightly, feeling her drift off to sleep, her body relaxing in the comfort of his embrace. He closed his eyes, searching for her thoughts, waiting to see if the shadows would return.

Raven woke to find herself alone, wrapped in both her cloak and Haldir's. She sat up, rubbing the tender area of her cheek where it had pressed against the stony ground. She rose, shivering in the chill air, the sun had not yet risen and it was very dark. She began to move and gasped when strong arms wrapped around her, drawing her back into the shadow of the rock where she had slept. She turned feeling Haldir cover her mouth as not to scream, his body only a shadow to her human eyes. His voice was warm, but firm as he whispered.

"There are Orcs, you must stay in the shadows. They can see as well as we in the dark." He removed his hand and she sighed in relief. He caressed her cheek quickly, drawing her back down against the rock and she felt him crouch before her. She cursed the darkness , wishing she could see like the elves did. "You must stay here. We will not fight, unless we must, for we are too near and it would draw attention where we do not yet want any." She nodded and he leaned forward, brushing her lips with his drawing the cloaks back over her. "These do not shield you any longer, keep to the darkness of the deepest shadows." He whispered and rose and she could hear no more where she huddled against the rock.

She could sense a presence a few moments later, and grew still when the foul scent of an Orc filled her nostrils. She did not know how close the elves were and fingered her small knife, hearing it shuffle softly closer. She stiffened when it sniffed loudly and knew it had caught her scent. She began to rise, unaware for sure where he stood, the darkness shielding the creature from her view. She felt the small pebbles that sprinkled her hand as she rested it against the boulder beside her before she heard the muffled gasp of the Orc. She heard it hit the ground with a softness that would not have been natural if he had not been assisted.

She flinched when she felt a hand touch her arm, and heard Lord Celeborn's soft whisper in her ear. "Do not move, they are close. Haldir is on the other side of the boulder." He squeezed her wrist and then was gone, and she was wrapped in eerie silence again. She closed her eyes willing herself to feel Haldir, and finally felt a flash of amusement. He was hiding his thoughts from her again, she must learn to do so as well, she thought irritably.

The darkness began to recede slightly and she could pinpoint shadows of the landscape around her. How had the darkness become so oppressive, the night before a full moon had rose and should have lit the night almost as well as day. Her fear grew and she reminded herself they were among those that Morgoth led. She hugged the cloaks to her tighter, trembling against the stone.

A scrabbling movement caught her eye and she turned listening intently. The shadows moved in front of her and she crouched tighter in the cloaks. The loud breathing she heard told her she was in danger once again, she seemed like a magnet and drew the Orcs to her quickly. She knew the elves were close, and could only wait while they watched their quarry draw near.

The squeal of one of the shadows was quickly silenced and she saw the shadow that became one of the Orcs fall close to her. She saw Haldir stand up from where he leaned over the Orc. The sky was beginning to lighten, and she could see his form distinctly now. His head turned to her, and she knew he glanced at her, and knew his eyes would be glittering like frozen grey ice as the coldness settled in her mind once again

The shadows that were the Orcs became clearer to her, she could now see the flutter of their armor, the movements of legs and arms where they crawled around just below them. How long would it take before they realized two of their kind was missing? She huddled against the rock, inching out as far as she could and still be within its shadow. Two more Orcs had turned and were drawing near. The elves could not shoot with their bows knowing the Orcs would be sure to scream in pain. She watched when two elves detached from the shadows, creeping up behind the Orcs easily. She shuddered at their coldness and both Orcs fell limp to the ground, any chance of alerting their fellow comrades eliminated with a slash to the throat.

How long could they fight this way, the sky was rapidly becoming lighter, and the darkness that might have shielded the Orcs from them, now gave way to light and danger to the elves. They could no longer hide among the shadows either. Their cloaks that had shielded them from prying eyes in the desert were no longer much protection against the black glittering rocks that surrounded them now.

The sharp turn of several of the Orcs and their sudden squeal of outrage and hatred told her that the elves had been seen and she flinched in surprise when Lord Celeborn and Haldir rose from just a few feet from her. Their bows were already drawn and they released their arrows, death coming to several of the Orcs with a soft thwack of entry.

She watched in amazement as she always did, when Haldir drew again. His smooth movements, his long reach and the intensity with which he aimed and released his arrows sent fluttering coils of warmth through her. She shook her head in bewilderment, how could she sit here, in intense danger, admiring the ethereal being before her, his strength, the coiled intensity, the power that radiated from the tense muscles and the lethal gleam of his eyes so much that she wanted only to tackle him lustfully right then.

The slow turn of his head so he could glance at her and the outright laughter in her head told her he knew exactly what she was thinking and she slid back along the boulder so he couldn't see her. She didn't see the amused shake of Celeborn's head and Haldir's shrug of amusement or she would have been mortified.

The Orcs had no chance against the elves, their small party was decimated before they even realized half of their number were already dead. The elves pulled the bodies into the shadow of a rock and they began to circle the rim of the valley. Raven stopped suddenly realizing the valley was actually two, the second one hidden by the spires of the broken city. Had the elves heard the sound? They must have, and she hurried past them to see the sight that drew her so strongly. Behind the spires of rock lay a huge hole that was blasted from the sheer wall of rock surrounding it, by the massive waterfall that poured from it. Water, in this land of death, more water than she could ever have imagined. The sound was a dim roar and she stared over the edge of the valley to see the mists that surrounded its base as it traveled down into the valley to disappear into a canyon of rocks beyond her sight.

She sat on the rim of the valley, staring at the foaming water across from her. She felt distant suddenly, as if she were not a part of her body, and she could not move. He was here, somewhere close, his essence seeping into her soul, Morgoth. She felt the shadows creep into her mind and she fought against them. He would not control her this time. She searched her mind for Haldir's thoughts. His flash of concern was like a beacon and she held onto it for dear life.

Haldir felt her weaken, felt the terror she tried to control and he reached for her with his mind. He moved to crouch beside her, seeing her in the trance as she had the night on the stair. He laid her back, her concern growing while she stared at him blankly. He looked up when Celeborn knelt down next to him.

"He has had resumed control." He said seeing Haldir scowl. "But she has your thoughts to hold her, she is strong. I feel a presence approaching, Haldir. Your time is nearing, and you must not let her interfere with your thoughts. If Morgoth realizes he can distract you by her thoughts he will do what ever he can to do so." Celeborn frowned, brushing the hair from her forehead, closing the blank eyes that stared.

The two elves rose, following the rim further, Haldir carrying Raven in his arms until a sharp whistle pierced the air. Haldir laid her down gently on the ground and turned to face the creatures that appeared over the crest of the hill ahead. They stood beside the waterfall now, its magnitude and thunder echoing in the rocky valley. Before them stood a party of Uruk Hai, but some that had never graced the world of Middle earth before. These were taller, more massive and their eyes were red as molten lava. Haldir's eyes narrowed when their leader stopped, the elves closing together, bows drawn.

The Uruk smiled, jagged brown teeth dull in its black skinned mouth, it's wide nostrils flaring taking in the scent of the elves. His eyes moved down to the girl at Haldir's feet and it grinned, licking its lips.

`So we finally meet." The Uruk growled gravelly, his voice grating as he spat. He stared pointedly at the Raven again. "I think I will enjoy that one." He smiled, meeting Haldir's impassive gaze. He gazed at the small number of elves. "You do not come with many, elf, you are confident of your abilities I see." He grinned motioning for the other Uruk to stand back. His greasy black hair hung down his back and he bowed low before Haldir. "I look forward to our challenge."

The other Uruk's stared maliciously at the elves, their own bows drawn as well, and the Uruk leader and Haldir faced each other. Several moments passed as they assessed one another. The tension was finally broken when Raven screamed in terror. Haldir turned his head to look at her and Celeborn threw himself at his March Warden. The arrow the Uruk leader had loosed passed narrowly between the two elves and they hit the ground, both leaping to their feet instantly.

"You must not let her distract you!" Celeborn hissed, releasing the arrow he'd nocked when he stood up. The elves had leaped for cover, and the Uruks as well. The air was thick with tension and they fought, arrows whistling with death. Haldir turned toward the Uruk, ignoring the arrows that flew past him, knowing they would not dare to shoot him.

The Uruk stared back, laughing as well, and threw down his bow to draw his scimitar.

Raven woke with a terrified scream, and lay stunned looking above her to see the elves leap for cover, and the arrows that flew directly over her. She rolled over, and gasped watching Haldir draw his sword, his bow lying on the ground, facing a huge black creature that towered a head taller than he did. The two stared at each other and Raven closed her eyes, willing to feel something of Haldir's emotion, but he had blocked her out. The two circled, while several of the creatures behind them went down screaming shrilly in death. She could not move, only watch as the creature leaped toward Haldir, his sword slamming against Haldir's with such a force she saw Haldir grimace. The expression was wiped quickly from his face, but the creature saw it and laughed.

Round they circled, the creature grinning madly, leaping forward with arms longer than she was tall, blocked each time by Haldir's defense. How could he defeat this creature she wondered fearfully. She closed her eyes, willing her fear to be gone. She gasped when Celeborn slid to her side, pulling her quickly to her feet. He pulled her behind the elves, and turned to her, his blue eyes glittering with intent.

"You must not try to reach him, if you distract him he will die, Raven. You must trust him fully, you cannot have any doubts." He said pushing her down below the top of the rocks. He whirled from her, joining his wardens and they continued to fight.

Haldir grunted when the Uruk's blade slammed his, the reverberations running through his arms into his back and legs. The creature was stronger than he, but did not have his agility. Haldir twisted, sliding under the creatures arm, and drove his sword into the unprotected underarm, wrenching it free as the Uruk slammed his fist into Haldir's shoulder, knocking him on his back.

Haldir rolled quickly, his sword raised blocking another thrust, and leaped to his feet ignoring the pain that swept through his shoulder. He ducked another swing, turning to slice a deep gash in the creatures thigh and it roared in anger. They fought on the edge of the valley, the Uruk number growing less since the elves' aim proved better. Haldir still fought on the defensive, aware that the Uruk was driving him back, but he dared not look behind him. He would bide his time, patience.

Their swords clashed again, the screech of the metals blades loud in the heavy air, the light hitting the blades as they moved about, flashing in the air. They fought, both determined, cold in their intent, knowing death would be the only outcome. The Uruk slammed his blade against Haldir, pushing past his block to slice his upper arm. Haldir ignored the shooting pain, the blood that began to drip down his arm. He leaped toward the Uruk, aware that the elves had drawn nearer. His blade slid under the Uruk block as he twisted, slamming his body into the Uruk and the creature went down forcefully. The Uruk rolled over as Haldir leaped back to his feet, kicking out and sweeping Haldir off his feet again. Haldir rolled over to find himself looking over the edge of a cliff, and rolled again as the Uruk's blade slammed into the ground where he had just lain.

Raven covered her mouth with her hands, watching Haldir fall to the ground, rolling back to his feet instantly. She moved when the elves moved, keeping pace with the two who fought. The rest of the Uruk's party was dead, and the elves crept along the edge of the boulders, bows still drawn, knowing they could not fire their arrows for this fight was not theirs.

She could not bear to watch and she huddled against a boulder, unaware the elves moved beyond her, unaware she huddled alone and in full view of the Uruk as he turned toward her. The creature saw her, and he grinned, and whirled faster than Haldir anticipated, and slammed his body into the lean elf, who staggered in surprise. The Uruk leaped forward, his blade coming up to connect with Haldir's block, but the elf was already unbalanced and he twisted to regain it to find the ledge underneath him crumbling from under his feet.

Haldir gasped, throwing himself against the edge of the cliff, and the Uruk spun back, leaping away from him. He rolled over to find the Uruk grinning at him, and to his horror, between the elves and Raven. She was huddled behind the creature, unaware of her danger. Haldir opened his mind to her, and she looked up in surprise when the Uruk turned, reaching down to grasp her cloak when she tried to leap out of his reach. He rolled the cloak into his fist rapidly, hauling Raven to her feet while Haldir leaped to his feet, running toward the Uruk Hai. Haldir ducked the rapid swing of the Uruk as it half dragged half carried Raven with him along the towering cliff's edge while she struggled furiously. It caught hold of her hair, throwing her down onto the stony black crystalline ground. She grunted her eyes glazing hitting the ground hard and Haldir's wrath grew in its icy fury .

He pushed the Uruk back as it turned back toward him, wielding the heavy sword effortlessly in it's massive hands. Haldir knew this was the final battle, the Uruk's eyes had gone black as the skin on its hide and he saw the laughter of Morgoth flash in its eyes. He fought the creature, blocking Haldir's advances, holding its ground while they fought furiously on the edge of the cliff. Inching toward a narrow band of rock that bridged a gap in the chasm. The mist shrouded depths of the huge waterfall roared its fury behind them into the narrow gorge.

The Uruk laughed when the sky darkened suddenly feeling the dark energy draw around him. The Uruk's blade screeched against Haldir's blade as they stared eyed to eye for a moment. Haldir eyes glittered icily refusing to give ground to the Uruk. It spun, knocking Haldir off balance for a second time, its massive elbow driving into Haldir's side with such force that Haldir gasped in pain, trying to regain his breath. He rolled across the black rock as the Uruk's sword smashed down where he'd fallen a moment before.

Celeborn leaped forward, gripping Haldir's arm, heaving him to his feet and both elves pressed forward. The Uruk snarled, dragging a still stunned Raven along the edge of the cliff, backing across the narrow bridge of rock closer to the edge of the gorge. He grinned, his brown teeth gleaming dully yanking Raven to her feet, forcing her to stand before him as Haldir stalked toward them, Celeborn a step behind on the narrow bridge of rock.

The Uruk knotted his hands into Raven's hair and she began to struggle against him again. He looked up at the sky as the lightening began to crackle in bright flashes above him.

"Morgoth is hungry." The Uruk laughed while Haldir inched forward. The Uruk held his sword in the air and it crackled suddenly with electric energy.

Celeborn frowned only seconds before the air burst apart with a flash of brilliant light, the lightning drawn to the metal of the Uruk's sword and it swept the blade toward Haldir while he leaped back, falling against Celeborn as the lightning jumped from the blade to the black stone of the bridge with a crash. Haldir stared down in horror as the rock once again crumbled beneath his feet, and he had to choose between leaping to the Uruk's side to fight or back to save his Lord from sure death. Celeborn fell back whirling to grasp at the cliff's edge and Haldir threw himself back over the edge. He reached out at the same instant to clasp Celeborn's wrist as the lord slammed into the wall of the gorge. Lifting the Celeborn to the edge of the chasm Haldir stood slowly while the Uruk laughed, his amusement clear as he stared at the two elves.

"So you choose to save your lord rather than your love." He snarled wrapping his hand around Raven's throat, forcing her to look at Haldir where he stood uneasily on the other side of the chasm.

Celeborn and the elves behind Haldir raised their bows but Haldir held up his hand. This was his fight, they would not prevail.

The Uruk grinned, relaxing when the elves lowered their bows. "You choose wisely, if they had shot they would be dead." The Uruk snarled. Haldir noticed the thin wavering bands of darkness that had begun to creep up the walls of the chasm. He inhaled slowly, calming the fury that swept through his mind. The Uruk gripped Raven tighter lifting her to his eye level. "Perhaps he will enjoy watching me rape you." The Uruk whispered loudly knowing full well the elf across the chasm would hear. Its eyes narrowed watching the elf's reaction across the gulf. "He can do nothing to stop me, you are mine and he has failed.

Raven gripped the black fingers that gripped her throat struggling to breathe seeing it licked its lips hungrily. She twisted, her vision growing dim since he was cutting off her breath. He dropped her and she gasped when the air burst back into her lungs.

Haldir eyes narrowed calmly while the Uruk bent over Raven gripping her tunic as he bent down. "Are you so foolish to think my arrows cannot reach you should you think to touch her more than you do." Haldir snarled quietly and the Uruk turned to him. It frowned when Haldir sheathed his sword to take his bow from Celeborn's grip.

The Uruk looked at the sky and then the chasm, doubt glittering in its eye and snarled when Raven twisted, having gained back her breath, trying to slide toward the edge of the cliff. It picked her up by the waist holding her struggling body in front of him.

"There are many ways to do that which I desire to do, elf." The Uruk snarled quietly and he slid a large dagger along the back of Raven's tunic splitting it into two and yanking down one side while Raven gasped arching away from its touch. Haldir's body stiffened in outrage.

The Uruk laughed while it fondled Raven in front of Haldir, her grimace of disgust delighting him. He stared in alarm when Haldir gripped his bow, drawing an arrow slowly from the quiver on his back.

Celeborn stared at Haldir, clenching his jaw, waving back the wardens that stepped forward in dismay when Haldir nocked his arrow and raised his bow to pull it back slowly. The wood and leather creaked ominously as he drew back, sighting along the arrow, locking his eyes on to the woman who stared at him calmly.

The Uruk snarled, seeing their gazes meet and shifted but the arrow let loose with a soft twang and the creature screamed in outrage when the arrow embedded itself only a mere breath from Raven's side into his. The Uruk shifted his hold on Raven, his arm crushing her chest while she struggled, kicking viciously, snapping the arrow's shaft from its side. The Uruk sucked in a furious breath roaring his outrage while Haldir drew another arrow from his quiver.

The Uruk stepped back, trying to use the small woman as a shield, realizing now his lord was unable to protect him as he thought. He whirled around, gasping in pain when another arrow flew, slicing the ties of the girls braid as she turned her head, embedding painfully into his shoulder, making him stagger back a step. The creature dropped her for a moment, and Haldir drew swiftly, launching two more arrows together knocking the Uruk back several more steps.

The creature grasped Raven's hair as it hung down her back, dragging her back when she attempted to crawl away from him. The Uruk knelt down and wrapped an arm around Raven's throat. He spun his knife so the blade's point poked Raven just beneath her breastbone.

"Do you dare fire again? One flinch and the dagger goes in." the Uruk snarled and Haldir smiled coldly. The Uruk looked behind him, but only the sheer drop to the roaring falls below him remained.

Haldir glared at the creature drawing his last arrow from its quiver. His fingers flexed on the string of the bow as he drew back slowly, pausing when a voice echoed in his head.

Remember what I am and use this to defeat the evil you will face

Haldir looked past the Uruk at the falls that thundered behind him, their roar echoing in his head and his eyes narrowed. His thoughts went out to the Valar for whom he fought. I do this for you. He focused back on the Uruk seeing its eyes narrow in concern. His gaze met Ravens and he drew the bowstring back to its full draw. The Uruk began to rise, its eyes widening in fear when Haldir frowned, drawing on his faith of the Valar's word that she would be his and forced himself to unlock his fingers to release the arrow. The force of the arrow shot at such a close distance knocked the Uruk back once again as the arrow hit the Uruk's shoulder. The Uruk dropped its knife in its agony, the arrow's passage fluttering the auburn hair on Raven's cheek as she stared at Haldir calmly. The Uruk shuddered realizing that it had stepped beyond the bounds of the cliff and screamed, clamping its arms around Raven as it fell back, sweeping her off the cliff to drop silently into the churning mists of the falls behind them.

Haldir shuddered violently dropping to his knees staring at the empty space across from him.
