Haldir laid Raven gently on his bed, staring at her for a moment. He sighed as he pulled his tunic over his head, tossing it on the floor. He opened the door to his bath, grinning as the tub still stood filled with water from this afternoon. His shortened bath had been forgotten. He gathered Raven into his arms again, and grimacing at the coolness of the water immersed her into the tub.
Raven reached out in her dream blindly. She thought she had heard Galadriel calling to her but the darkness was so overwhelming. She was so cold. The shadows grew closer as she shivered, the hand that tried to draw her closer beckoning to her still. She pushed it away as the coldness seemed to seep into her very bones as she fought the darkness surrounding her.
Haldir frowned as he gripped Raven's wrists as she began to struggle. He held her still as she twisted in his grasp, her breathing coming in gasps as she moaned softly. He gathered her wrists in one hand as he leaned over her, brushing her lips with his gently.
Raven shivered as the shadows retreated somewhat and in the distance she felt a lightness, which drew her. She tried to reach out to it, but the hand held her back, and she glanced back in fear as the dark shadows coalesced into the human shape she had seen in the mirror. She gasped in horror as it drew nearer, its eyes drawing her to it. She could not pull away. She twisted her head and closed her eyes to shut out the face before her, hearing her name as it whispered through her mind. She turned back to the lightness behind her, struggling through the shadows to reach it.
Haldir frowned as he could feel her struggle to reach consciousness. He scowled. For once he would welcome her anger, and he smiled as he reached out pushing her down under the water.
Raven gasped as the shadows fled suddenly, and coughed violently as water entered her mouth and she was drawn roughly up into the air once more. She leaned over her knees as she gasped for breath wrapping her arms around herself.
Haldir grinned as he leaned on the edge of the tub, resting his chin on his hands as he waited for her to gain her breath. "I thought perhaps the power of the Valar might serve you yet, Lirimaer." He said as she turned to look at him.
"How did I get here in your bath once more?" she whispered as she shivered in the cool water. She picked at the wet material of her nightgown in the water in irritation.
Haldir smiled, closing his eyes as he sighed. "It is not important." He said.
Raven shivered again, raising a shaking hand to her head. "I had a horrible dream, I could not wake." She whispered as he reached out to brush her wet hair back. She stared at him in confusion. "It was not a dream was it."
Haldir frowned. "No it was not, I thought you were lost to the shadow." He said as she closed her eyes.
"I felt you in my dream, somehow I knew it was you, I was so confused. In the beginning I dreamt you called to me, and I followed your voice. But I could not find you. And the shadows came and I could not see but I heard your voice. But then it was not your voice and I was afraid, Haldir." Raven hid her face in her knees as Haldir straightened. She looked up, frowning and gripped the front of his tunic.
"You cannot leave me, Haldir." She said as she pulled him toward her. Haldir pulled her fingers from his tunic.
"I will not leave you, Raven." He said as she shivered violently. He pulled her to him as she wrapped her arms around his neck. He lifted her out of the tub and sat down in the chair against the wall.
"You could have at least warmed the water." She said as she shivered again, the tremor vibrating down to her toes. He laughed pulling her closer.
"Then perhaps we need to remove the gown that is drenching me as well." He murmured as she sat up, pushing away from him.
"Oh it is I once again who must remove my clothes. I do not think it quite fair, March Warden." She sniffed as he smiled, his eyes growing warmer as he looked at her.
"But Raven, I fear it does not do much as it is quite transparent when wet." He chuckled as he stared pointedly at her chest.
Raven looked down to see indeed the material was quite sheer. She frowned as she pulled the material away from her skin. She curled up into Haldir's arms, reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck, burying her face. He wrapped his arms around her, caressing her back as she sighed, inhaling his scent.
"I really must insist we remove this offending nightgown, Raven. I am getting quite wet, and I don't know that I have many more tunics left in my chest." He murmured as she snuggled closer yet.
"It's your own fault." Raven whispered as he snorted standing up. He strode toward the tub and Raven gasped as she was dropped back into the water. He grinned as she struggled to push the wet hair out of her eyes and pulled off his tunic. He walked over to her as she stared at him suspiciously.
"You interrupted my bath this afternoon, quite rudely I fear." He said as she grinned wickedly.
"Yes and you got your revenge, you tore my gown with your arrow." She snipped dragging the wet material off her chest again as she noticed Haldir's eyes had strayed there once again.
Haldir laughed softly, "No, you tore your dress. If you had not yanked it free in your hurry to avoid me it would not have torn."
Raven scowled. She hugged her knees, shivering again in the cool water. Haldir smiled and ran his fingers over the surface speaking softly. Raven sighed as the water began to warm around her.
"You would feel better to take it off." He said again as Raven shook her head.
"No, it not I who wanted the bath, Haldir." She said as his eyes narrowed in amusement.
"That is true." He said and stood. Raven stared as he sat down and began to pull off his leggings, and turned to face away from him.
Raven closed her eyes as the image of him pulling the laces from his leggings burned into her mind. The thought of what would come next sent the blood rushing to her face. Her heart beat madly and she imagined what he must look like. Her eyes squeezed tightly shut as she felt him sit down in the water and he reached out and pulled her over him as he stretched out his legs.
"There, I am fully undressed and you are not. We are even." He chuckled as she opened one eye carefully. "But I fear I care not for this garment so off it comes." He grinned as he gripped the gown pulling it rapidly over her head.
Raven curled up on his lap as he dropped the wet gown over the side of the tub. She stared at him as he smiled lazily, his gray eyes warm as they caressed her. She could feel the tension in his body as he lay beneath her. She squirmed about and he wrapped his arms around her to hold her still.
"You must lay still, Raven. I cannot relax when you squirm all over me." He said closing his eyes. Raven smiled impishly.
"Perhaps I don't want you to relax, and besides I do not think you meant this to be a relaxing pastime." She said as she twisted around to straddle his lap. She tried to ignore the gleam that flickered in his eyes as he shut them again, his tension evident in the line of his jaw.
Haldir fought to control the raging inferno that radiated from where her hips ground against him. He could not bare to open his eyes to see the fair form that sat astride his hips, lest he lose what little control he had remaining.
He heard her giggle, and felt her lean over him, and he gripped the hips that slid enticing against him. He clenched his teeth as he felt her breasts brush his chest as she leaned over him to slide her hands over his chest. She kissed the line of his jaw as he smiled.
"You are so tense, Haldir. You have such control." She laughed as he caught the hand that was tracing a line along the lower part of his ear.
He opened one eye, "I fear my control is debatable. If you do not cease your movements this will end before it even starts." He said as he gripped her hips to hold her still.
Raven laughed in his ear, her breath sending tremors down his spine. 'But Haldir, we have traveled this path before. I think I wish to see what lies at the end this time."
Haldir frowned, opening his eyes to grasp her face between hands.
"I will not enter into this lightly, Raven." He said as he kissed her softly. Raven sighed, enjoying the feel of him against her. He smiled pulling her tighter as he ran his hands down along her sides gripping her hips. Raven smiled, looking up behind him and screamed as darkness flooded the room
Haldir swept Raven into his arms, turning to face the malevolent shadow that hovered just behind them. He set Raven into the water, stepping out of the tub as he faced the wavering figure before him. Haldir felt himself thrown back against the wall and he slid down, trying to clear his head as the black shadows dimmed his vision.
Before him the shadowy figure wavered in the cold air that flooded the room. He began to rise but found himself frozen in place, the figure hissed at him, pointing at him with long dark fingers.
"You cannot have her." The figure whispered into Haldir's mind as he fought the coldness that crept now into his body. He leaned his head back, closing his eyes. He did not see but felt the air in the room shudder as a blue flash of light split the air. Haldir did not open his eyes but saw the Valar as they stood facing each other.
"You have gone too far this time, Morgoth. I have watched you play your games of deceit and illusion too long now. I am Ulmo, and as second of the Valar you must heed me when I say you must cease this." The Valar did not speak as boom as the waves of the sea crashed against the shore.
"The human is mine, Ulmo." Morgoth hissed, his figure still wavering on the edge of the receding darkness.
"The woman carries my blood in her veins as you know, Morgoth. You will not sully it with your thoughts or deeds." Ulmo said. He pointed a long thin hand at Morgoth. "You have tried to deceive her, but she sees through your deception. I will allow your trickery no more." He stood angrily facing Morgoth, his hair curling around his shoulders like the white caps that rose over the choppy waves. His face was silver in the blue light that surrounded him and his grey eyes a stormy seas.
Morgoth snarled, his shape shifting slightly, as he leaned toward Ulmo. "It is too late, already I have control of her mind. The elf's meager efforts to release her from my grip have failed."
Ulmo turned to look at Haldir as he lay frozen against the wall. "Not true, I have allowed his magic to aid her. I waited to see how far you would take your intent, Morgoth. To enter this world as you attempt is against the laws of Iluvatar."
Morgoth clenched his fists, the shadows darkening into a blackness that swallowed the light around it. "You interfere, Ulmo." His words echoed in the darkness.
Ulmo laughed, the sound bouncing off the walls of the room. "You are no match for me, Morgoth." he boomed as he folded his arms. "I will do what I must." He leaned toward Morgoth.
" But I am not against making this more interesting, I make the elf my champion, Morgoth. Dare you send one of your own against him? He will defeat any you send." Ulmo laughed.
Morgoth's image wavered to grey mist, and reappeared as an image of another elf. "Perhaps I will use this one for my champion!" his voice hissed from the image of Rumil.
Ulmo scowled angrily, waving his hand and the image faded revealing Morgoth once more. "Nay, the Lothlorien elves are creatures of the light, you cannot use them as defenders of your evil. I will not allow you to darken their hearts by pitting the brothers against each other."
Morgoth laughed, the sound sending chills down Haldir's back as he was forced to continue to listen. The shadows danced on the walls. "I have my own champion, Ulmo. But the elf will have to search him out." He laughed, the sound crackling as if the talan were on fire. "And if my champion defeats your precious elf, Ulmo, the girl will be mine."
Haldir struggled against the bonds that held him frozen in place as the figure of Morgoth floated closer to him. His stomach roiled against the feeling of revulsion that swept over him. "And until the match has been won, elf, I hold the girls mind in my hands." He laughed and faded quickly into a grey mist and Haldir fell to the floor.
Haldir pushed himself slowly off the floor, ignoring his nakedness. He stood before Ulmo as the Valar turned toward him. "I am honored you think so highly of me to name me your champion." Haldir said as he bowed his head. Ulmo smiled, the Valar's eyes fading from the stormy grey to turquoise.
"I have no doubt you will defeat Morgoth's champion, Haldir O' Lorien, long have I watched you on this earth." He pointed at Raven.
"You desire the woman, but she stands on the edge of destruction. If you fail in this, she will fall to the shadow and great evil Morgoth will create from her." Ulmo frowned waving his hand gently over her, and the water slowly misted around her until she lay in the empty tub. "She is of my blood, long ago I desired a human female as I rested in the waters of the Anduin. Of her she is long descended. Morgoth knows this and hopes to gain some of my power through her."
Haldir frowned. "Why do you tell me this?" he asked as Ulmo turned back to him. He laughed, the sound washing over Haldir.
"I wish you to defeat Morgoth, and protect that which is mine. If you defeat him the woman is yours." Ulmo said as Haldir glanced at Raven as she lay still. "I will counter Morgoth's madness and she will waken, as you will need her to lead you. Remember what I am and use this to defeat the evil you will face. She will guide you, but cannot help you further."
"If I defeat Morgoth's champion I ask for a boon for offering my life for you." Haldir said as he stared at Ulmo. The Valar looked down at him, a slow smile spreading over his features.
"You are courageous to face me and dare ask me favors." He chuckled as Haldir smiled.
"I risk all that I am for you, I think perhaps I might gain something?" Haldir noted.
Ulmo grinned. "But you keep your life, is that not enough?"
Haldir smiled broadly. "It is a most generous gift, but I am greedy." He said as Ulmo's laugh boomed through out the room.
"It cannot be said elf, that you are not a worthy champion. I have chosen well. What is this boon you ask?"
Haldir frowned. "I am immortal and have lived long on this earth, and will continue in the undying lands. I desire the woman but she is mortal and her life span is but a breath compared to the time I have existed. I would bind myself to her, but fear the fate of my soul were she to die as mortals do. I would ask that you gift her life to me."
Ulmo pursed his lips, his silver eyebrows rising. "You ask much of me, elf. If you bind to her as mortal when she passes into their afterworld you would not be able to follow, indeed a painful eternity of loss. If I deny this to you?"
Haldir stared at him. "I would still bind her to me."
Ulmo frowned as he studied Haldir before him. "You would still give your life to her, knowing the cost of such a binding?"
Haldir gazed at the Valar unflinchingly, "I would."
Ulmo smiled slowly, "I have enjoyed watching the play between you, and for you to jeopardize your future well being to remain with this mortal is impressive indeed. You know what you ask?"
Haldir nodded. Ulmo leaned over Raven, glancing at Haldir. "If you bind yourself to this woman, she shall live immortal. But shall you die she will, and if she dies so shall you."
Haldir smiled. "I agree."
Ulmo smiled as well, "Then it is done." And he laughed, the boom of his amusement shook the talan and the air burst open with a great flash of light, and thundered over the forest.
