The last thing he saw was a mountain of bodies as hefell, his comrades, his brothers in arms, his fellow elves.
Then darkness.
~*~*~*~
She was out in the sun in the aftermath of the night's rain. And the night's battle. There were so few wounded and so many dead.
They burned the attackers in large mounds. Their own, they buried. The surviving elves took care of their own dead.
Eowyn looked at the mound of dead elves, lying where they fell. Such beauty, but she hated them. Hated all elves. As she was about to turn away, she saw movement. She looked back and saw it again. Dead men and elves don't move.
It was the one who led them, the one from Lothlorien that Aragorn knew.
"I need a litter," she yelled.
~*~*~*~
He opened his eyes. The light hurt. He closed them again.
"Elf?" She spoke Westron, the common tongue. Why would an elf be speaking that language to him? He opened his eyes again. She wasn't an elf. She was human and she had tiny little spots on her face and blue eyes. He had seen her when they first arrived here at Helm's Deep. She was that tiny little one who was the King's niece.
He tried to speak but his voice was a harsh croak.
"Let me get you a drink, elf." She lifted his head and helped him get a sip of water. He wanted more than she let him drink. "That's enough for now."
~*~*~*~
She hated him. She hated them all. What could she offer Aragorn, compared to the beauty and grace of an elf? The thought had crossed her mind to let this one die. But she didn't. It didn't mean she had to be nice to him, though.
He smelled. She knew she had to bathe him, to get the grime and blood off of him. There was no one else to do it. She had someone bring water and supplies and she uncovered him. The surgeon from Edoras had tended his wounds. They weren't as bad as she'd thought, but he was immobilized for a few days.
She pulled the sheet back and wet her cloth in the warm water and began with his face. He drifted in and out of consciousness as she worked her way down his body. Elves were a lot bigger than she'd thought them to be. He was six feet, probably a bit more. He was slender but not skinny at all. His skin was pale under all the blood and dirt. It was smooth and warm, too, she thought as she ran her hand down his chest. She almost left the sheet over the bottom part of his body, but he was dirty and she wanted to see him. Eowyn had seen very few naked males, most of them were her relatives.
~*~*~*~
"Do you like what you see?" His voice was still little more than a croak, but she could understand him. He tried to smile when her face turned red, but was sure it looked more like a grimace.
"Don't flatter yourself, elf."
~*~*~*~
She bathed him, admiring his body as much as she could without giving herself away. She did like what she saw, and that evening when she slept, she dreamed of long pale limbs and dark blue eyes. She woke in damp, tangled sheets with her heart pounding and her body aching for something she had never known before.
~*~*~*~
Haldir was having dreams of his own. He dreamed of all the bodies and woke up screaming. When he opened his eyes, the human girl was holding him, whispering that everything was all right to him. Before he realized what he was doing, he pulled her into the bed and into his arms. He held her so tight that she could barely breathe.
"It was a dream, elf. You are safe." She looked down into his eyes and saw the pain and fear there. She had no idea why but she kissed his cheek and lay hers against his.
~*~*~*~
She was embarrassed to awaken in the morning in her thin cotton gown, lying in a naked elf's arms. He was looking rather amused at her discomfort.
"Sleep well?" He looked so innocent.
She glared at him and went to her room to bathe and dress for the day.
She blushed when she realized what she had felt pressed against her when she woke up. Elves surely did heal fast if he was already thinking about 'that'.
~*~*~*~
Haldir was indeed healing fast, his body anyway. He would have fallen into complete despair except that it might would have pleased the hateful human girl way too much. He looked forward to arguing with her. It was the only thing he looked forward to.
He was embarrassed himself that he had been in such a condition when she awoke. He had actually been thinking about… well, he'd been thinking about how good she felt in his arms and how he almost wished she had her bare skin pressed against him.
~*~*~*~
"You have to get up today. I'm tired of being your nursemaid." She helped him to sit up. She winced at the ugly scars on his back.
"Do I get some clothes? I can't very walk around like this. It would scandalize the humans here."
"Would you at home?" She handed him leggings and a tunic she had borrowed from Legolas.
"Yes, why not?" He grinned at her, wolfishly. She had thought elves too dignified to leer.
"Do you really live in the top of a tree?" She had heard this from the few who had ever seen where elves lived.
"Oh yes, my talan is in the top of a lovely old tree. My brothers share it with me."
"You have no wi.. mate?"
"No, my Lady, nor do I think you have a mate?" He said as she helped him dress, blushing when he'd stood naked in front of her. "You blush too much to be mated with anyone."
Damned elf! He was annoying. How did he always know so much about her? She didn't see his satisfied smile as she stomped out of the room.
~*~*~*~
Eowyn dreamed of him again, this dream much more intimate. She dreamed he lay between her thighs, doing that which she had never done. She awoke with his name on her lips.
~*~*~*~
Haldir lay in his bed and thought of her. She wasn't pretty like an elfwoman. She was contrary and loved to argue with everything he said. She made him ache to be closer, to be her lover. He whispered her name.
~*~*~*~
He heard her say his name in the night. He knew she was dreaming as humans do, but he couldn't stop himself from finding her, going to her.
~*~*~*~
She awoke, and in the dim light, she saw him standing in the doorway. He was naked as he stepped into her chamber and closed the door.
"I heard you say my name," he said as he reached the bed.
She thought he looked like a god as he stood over her. She clutched the sheet over her naked body. What had possessed her to toss her gown aside when she retired for the night?
~*~*~*~
He wanted to kiss her, to find out what she tasted like. He leaned down and touched his lips to hers. So soft they were, and they opened beneath his. He had expected to slapped, not welcomed. Her grip on the sheet relaxed, and his curiosity got the best of him. Did she have those tiny spots on her chest too? He slipped the sheet down to her waist while he kissed her, and she didn't stop him. But his eyes weren't looking for spots when he raised back up. His gaze fell upon her breasts and that primal need that all males seem to have made him gasp. He lay his palm over a small nipple and felt it harden.
~*~*~*~
Eowyn was on fire. He kissed her again. His fingers teased her nipple as he did so. He sat up as he pulled the sheet completely off of her. It did nothing to cool her off though, especially when he lay down beside her. She cried out when his hand ran lightly down her body, touching her breasts, her belly, then the blond curls at the juncture of her thighs. His mouth came down on hers again as he pressed his body against her side. His skin was warmer than hers, and his hard arousal butted against her hip.
~*~*~*~
He knew he was going to join with her. He didn't think he could stop himself. He knew he'd never tell her that an elf mates for life. He moved so he was on top of her, still kissing her and kissing her. He thought that eternity itself wouldn't be long enough to kiss her perfect lips.
He shifted so he could lie between her legs. She let him, looking up at him as if he were the one who knew all the answers. He wished he did. He entered her gently and almost stopped breathing when she cried out in pain. He hadn't known. Shame made his face burn, but she kissed him and told him it was all right. He moved inside her, needing her.
~*~*~*~
Eowyn thought she would die for a second, when he broke her barrier. When she looked into his face, she saw that he was shocked, ashamed. When he began to move, pleasure began to take the place of the pain. He was still too weak to move very fast, but the slow deep rhythm he set was perfect. She looked up into midnight blue eyes and was lost in them.
She had never felt the odd neediness in her body before that she felt now. She knew that with every thrust that Haldir made, she seemed to be closer to … something. Then he jerked his hips hard and pushed deeper into her than he had before. He cried out in elvish, *"Melethin le." She felt her own world stop and explode inside her body, making itself anew as she clung to him, saying his name over and over.
The rest of the night was spent in quiet whispers and sweet pleasure. Eowyn knew that she had given the stubborn elf her heart and suspected that she had his. She also knew that he would leave soon, and she already had plans to go to battle with her uncle.
She wished that things were different. Oh, how she wished.
~*~*~*~
He was ready to leave. He was standing beside his horse, a beautiful white stallion that Theoden had gifted him with. He looked for Eowyn. She was no where to be found.
"Hey, elf?"
He turned to find a boy who looked suspiciously like Eowyn behind him.
"Have you seen the Lady Eowyn, kind sir?" Haldir smiled wickedly at the 'boy'.
"She sends you her love."
He knew he would love her always, even after he left this land. "Tell her I will never forget her."
Then, not caring in the least what anyone thought, he leaned down and gave the 'boy' a long, deep kiss, mounted his horse and rode toward home.
